DiscoverDigitalPhotography

Thiscourseprovidesanoverviewofdigitalphotographyforthose whoare not familiar with the technology. Students willlearn the basicfunctionsoftheircameraandcontrolstocreatehigh-quality images on their smartphone, DSLR camera, or compact or mirrorless image-makingdevices.Studentswantingtotakebetterimages will learn the basic practices of digital photography such as understandingexposureandcomposition,learninghowtoproperly storeimages,editingphotographswithdifferentkindsofsoftware, andpreparingimagesforprinting.Inadditiontotechnicalskills, students also practice developing the creativity and artistic eye that allow them to express themselves through visual imagery.

Sinceitsstartin2017,theSIUE SuccessfulCommunitiesCollaborative(SSCC)haspartneredwithninedifferentcitiesandvillagesin MadisonandSt.Claircounties.Over800 SIUEstudentsfromapproximately25disciplineshavebeenengagedthusfarwithpartners throughcommunity-identifiedprojectsthatareembeddedintheircourses.Additionally,SSCCcoordinatestwospecialprojects:

Community-Oriented Digital Engagement Scholars (CODES)

CODES introduces first-generation, Black, Latinx and/orPell-eligible students todigital community engagement. CODES’ first cohort of scholars began in fall 2022. CODES Scholars work in small research teams that focus on seeminglyunsolvable problems, such as climate changeorpoverty’smanifestationsacrossruralandurbanenvironments.TheprojectisledbyJessicaDeSpain,PhD,professorinthe DepartmentofEnglishLanguageandLiteratureandco-directoroftheSIUEInterdisciplinaryResearchandInformatics(IRIS)Center,andConnie FreySpurlock,PhD,associateprofessorintheDepartmentofSociologyanddirectorofSSCC.Visitsiue.edu/codesformoreinformation.

Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation (TRHT) CampusCenter

The SIUE TRHT Campus Center seeks to prepare the next generation ofleaders to confront racism and dismantle the belief in a hierarchy of human value. The integration of TRHT and SSCC results in more equitable access to high impact practices (HIPs) for SIUE students becausecommunity-identifiedneedsareembeddedintocoursesinwhichstudentsareenrolled.Thisisimportant,becauseHIPsare recognizedfortheirpositiveimpactonretentionandlearningoutcomesforstudentsacrossmanybackgrounds.Ascommunityand campus stakeholders collaborate and achievegoals together, truths can be revealed, authentic relationships can be formed and racial equitycanbeadvanced.
