Living in a Community Desk and Guest Policies • Guests are required to be escorted by the resident at all times while they are in the building (parents included). • Guests are required to leave an ID at the front desk. • Roommates work together to manage overnight guest expectations. • Roommates are required to sign an overnight guest agreement. • Hosts are responsible for guests and their behavior.
Living in a Community Noise Policy • Housing is not only a place to live and have community, but also a place to study and pursue academic interests. Maintaining a positive environment for students is of utmost importance. • Know the community noise guidelines.
Living in a Community How to approach noise? • Deal with problems personally • Compromise • Understand others need to study • Understand others need to live a normal life
Living in a Community Tobacco Policy • To comply with state law and promote better health, all SIUE campuses are smoke-free. This includes all residential facilities. • Tobacco products include, but are not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, e-cigarettes and all forms of smokeless tobacco.
Living with a Roommate What should we talk about before arriving? • Start having a conversation about expectations, particularly in regard to sleeping and guests. • Realize this is a shared space. Talk about how you may want to set up the room or what you are bringing. Normalize the roommate relationship. Not every roommate relationship ends with the two being BFFs. A healthy, successful roommate relationship starts with respecting and talking with one another.
Transition to College • Adjusting to being away from home is normal. Talk about this with your peers, resident assistant (RA), etc. • Stay connected through phone and social media. Maintain those ties to your community, while also staying on campus and thriving in your new community. • Weekend Challenge!
Leadership Opportunities Area Council Area Councils are groups in each living area that want to impact their residential experience by planning events for the residents, developing leadership skills and creating lasting memories for this year.
Residence Housing Association (RHA) Residence Housing Association (RHA) is the voice and representation of residential students at SIUE. RHA aims to improve the student living environment through both creative programming and policy influence.

University Housing Staff Resident Assistant Resident assistants (RAs) are undergraduate students who live in the hall and are responsible for a wing of residents. They go through extensive training and are the first point of contact for residents.
Desk Managers Desk managers (DMs) are undergraduate students who work the front desk of each housing area and are responsible for enforcing desk policy. DMs go through training and are an excellent resource for residents.
