Our most recent construction project, the Advanced Care Clinic will become a dental home for hundreds of children with special dental care needs. The facility also offers the SDM the capacity to expand our graduate education programs and has created additional operatory space for our predoctoral students in the main clinic.
Message from the Dean
SIU SCHOOL OF DENTAL MEDICINE
With my retirement approaching in December 2021, writing my final “Message from the Dean” is certainly bittersweet. I will miss interacting with our campus community, alumni and industry partners on a regular basis. Over the years, our students have been exemplary, and the dedication and expertise of our faculty and staff has been second to none. As an administrator, I could not ask for more. I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to lead the School of Dental Medicine and to watch it grow as much as it has. I look forward to seeing the SDM continue to flourish in the coming years. We provide an exceptional education and produce some of the finest dentists in practice. We can certainly be proud of our alumni. Through the years we have also expanded our capabilities to provide excellent postdoctoral education. As you may be aware, our graduate endodontic program began in July 2020 and accepted a second class of residents in July 2021. We also expanded our advanced education in general dentistry program and our implant fellowship program.
The SDM also has plans to begin a graduate orthodontic program in the near future. While these are certainly significant steps forward for the SDM, I anticipate there is still more to come. At the heart of it all, our students continue to amaze me. In particular, the classes of 2020 and 2021 demonstrated their capabilities in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, overcoming the already steep challenges required to earn a DMD degree through a time of incredible adversity. By way of example, a highlight of this past year was the Class of 2021 achieving a 100% first-time pass rate on the new Integrated National Board Dental Exam (INBDE). This is a credit to the hard work and perseverance of our students, faculty and staff. I have truly been proud and honored to serve as dean of the SIU School of Dental Medicine. Thank you to all the alumni, faculty, staff, students, residents, fellows and everyone who has been part of this campus community for making this a special place to work. Sincerely,
Bruce E. Rotter, DMD, MS Dean
Dean Bruce Rotter, DMD, MS, has brought a unique perspective to the dean’s position, fully participating in the School of Dental Medicine’s progress as a student, faculty member and administrator. His nearly 30 years of service have had a tremendous impact on the SDM, the community and healthcare field. Rotter led the SDM through reaccreditation from the Council on Dental Accreditation three times, administered multiple predoctoral and postdoctoral program improvements, and navigated the school through the COVID-19 pandemic. Additional highlights of Rotter’s distinguished career include: •
Created and administered one of the first implant fellowship training programs in the country. That program led to the creation of a freestanding implant clinic, which he designed, helped develop and directed.
•
Led construction efforts on the new Predoctoral Multidisciplinary Lab in 2014.
•
Launched the International Advanced Placement program.
•
Brought SIU police protection to the Alton campus.
•
Led fundraising and construction efforts on the new Advanced Care Patient Clinic, which houses postdoctoral training programs and a medical operating suite with general anesthesia capabilities for children with special dental care needs.
•
Launched a postdoctoral endodontic training program.
•
Opened a renovated clinic in University Park on the Edwardsville campus, expanding the scope of the SDM’s available patient care through expansion of postdoctoral programs and creation of a faculty practice.

issues. His dedication to “lower barriers not lower standards” has been woven in his exemplary efforts to advance the SDM since his tenure began in 1979.
Dr. Thomas Named Chief Diversity Officer The SDM is increasing its concentration on diversity, equity, inclusion and well-being. Dean Bruce Rotter, DMD, has appointed Cornell Thomas, DDS, as chief diversity officer and director of the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). Thomas will maintain his role as assistant dean for Admissions and Student Services, but will place a more focused and sustained emphasis on diversity and equity
“This added emphasis on equity and diversity issues is both extremely important and timely for the future growth and direction of the SDM. Dr. Thomas’ leadership will positively affect all members of the SDM community,” Rotter said. As the chief diversity officer, Thomas will facilitate communication for SDM to the essential values of anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion for faculty, staff and students. He will provide support for Black, Indigenous, people of color and historically underrepresented people at the SDM. “The DEI Office will provide transparency across and among groups in an effort to increase the numbers of underrepresented minority (URM) faculty, staff and students at the SDM,” Thomas explained. “The office will strive to dismantle systemic racism and oppression and empower the campus community to maintain an environment of honesty, civility and open-mindedness.”
SIU SCHOOL OF DENTAL MEDICINE
Specific initiatives include:
2
•
Increase enrollment of URMs at the SDM and increase the number of faculty and staff of color
•
Provide diversity and inclusion training to continue a safe and welcoming environment on our campus
•
Develop and implement a plan to recruit faculty from underrepresented groups
•
Provide advocacy for SDM students, faculty and staff from underrepresented groups, other cultures and genders, races and LGBTQIA groups.
•
Provide mentoring for these groups to thrive in the campus environment
Dr. Douglas Named Associate Dean for Faculty Recognizing the need to have an administrator specifically dedicated to the needs of the SDM faculty, Duane Douglas, DMD, has been named associate dean for faculty. The selection resulted from an internal search as the search committee believed an intimate knowledge of the School’s faculty would be essential in establishing effectiveness in the role. Reporting directly to the dean, Douglas is the administrative officer responsible for overall management and leadership of SDM faculty, a liaison between the dean and the faculty at large. “Philosophically, my goal is facilitating the flow of communication between our administration and the faculty giving them a seat at the table,” Douglas said. “From a practical perspective, my goal is to work with each faculty member to facilitate their development in teaching and scholarly activity. “I want every member of the SDM to reach their full potential,
whether that be acclimating junior faculty and helping them navigate the tenure process or guiding department chairs in developing procedures and standardizing their policies toward unification among our many departments.”
During his time in the interim role, Douglas made progress by meeting with each faculty member individually. “I learned so much more about the support they desired from the administration,” he said. “I developed an online ‘one-stop’ faculty handbook for the facultyat-large, an interactive guide to development of a tenure dossier for our junior faculty and an online research handbook.”
“
The field of dentistry is highly dynamic, and we invest significant energy to keep our faculty members abreast of the latest technologies, as well as calibrating our faculty towards standardizing treatment, procedures and grading.
”

SDM Celebrates Grand Opening of New Advanced Care Clinic
A ribbon-cutting ceremony in August marked the grand opening of SDM’s state-of-the-art Advanced Care Clinic (ACC). The ACC is a significant milestone along SDM’s journey in continuously advancing the education of its students and the care it provides to the community.
SIU SCHOOL OF DENTAL MEDICINE
“This clinic represents a major push in the advancement of our postdoctoral training programs,” said Dean Bruce Rotter, DMD. “The building also provides improved facilities for our students. But the foremost reason for the existence of this facility lies in the operating arena. “In past years, it has been difficult, if not impossible, to provide appropriate access to treatment for the many children who had special treatment needs and required general anesthesia for their care,” he continued. “This facility will allow our faculty, staff and graduate students to significantly increase the number of patients who will have access to this necessary healthcare.” Several legislators and area leaders attended the occasion, including Sen. Rachelle Crowe (D-Glen Carbon), Rep. Amy Elik (R-Fosterburg), Rep. Katie Stuart (D-Edwardsville), Alton Mayor David Goins, Alton Memorial Hospital Vice President Brad Goacher, SIUE Chancellor Randy Pembrook and SIU System President Dan Mahony.
4
“This is an exciting time for the School of Dental Medicine and the City of Alton,” Mahony said. “This facility obviously does a lot for our students, faculty and staff through the experiences they’ll have and the learning that will happen here. It’s not only about what happens from an educational standpoint, but also the impact that we have on the communities that surround us.”
“
“We’re excited about what this will do for the people of the region by providing low-cost care for people who need it most.”
”
SIU System President Dan Mahony, PhD
Rotter extended his gratitude to Delta Dental of Illinois and the Illinois Children’s Healthcare Foundation for their generous financial support in making the ACC possible. “On behalf of our board of directors and staff, we want to say congratulations and share our excitement for this project,” said Lora Vitek, executive director of Delta Dental Illinois Foundation. “Our mission is to improve the health and oral health of Illinois residents, and the foundation’s mission focuses on the care of children. The SIU School of Dental Medicine’s Advanced Care Clinic is a huge project and has a tremendous impact on the community by giving children more of the care they need.” Rotter also extended his appreciation to general contractor Poettker Construction Co., which led the project, with contributions from a host of supporting construction service providers. Additionally, he noted the many internal contributors who played a significant role in the building’s completion. Following remarks and the official ribbon-cutting, SDM residents and staff provided tours of the innovative clinical space which features a medical operating suite with general anesthesia capabilities. The operating suite includes two surgery operating rooms, enabling SDM residents, faculty and staff to offer more comprehensive, predictable and safe treatment, particularly for children and adults with special dental care needs.
SIU SCHOOL OF DENTAL MEDICINE
The ACC also includes an additional 16 patient care stations that are equipped to serve a comprehensive range of dental needs through existing, expanded and new postdoctoral programs at SDM. The lower level of the new building houses a new student lounge featuring workstations, ping pong and pool tables, and lockers.

The Class of 2020 was honored with a special hooding ceremony that afternoon. Rotter acknowledged the hard work and accomplishments of those who earned their degrees in the thick of a pandemic. “You are a special group of people,” he said. “You put in many hard hours, and distinguished yourselves through your academic achievements, quality dental care, community outreach and service efforts. You also demonstrated your resolve and resiliency, as we all stepped into and negotiated the unknown realm of a pandemic.” Rotter concluded both ceremonies by asking graduates to remember five important things:

New Faculty Practice Opens in Edwardsville
As clinical instructors at the SDM, the dentists who provide care at SIUDA are remarkably compassionate and understanding individuals who take the time to ensure patients’ comfort. The clinic offers a wide variety of services, including preventive, restorative and implant dentistry. Specialists are also available in endodontics, pediatric dentistry, oral surgery, periodontics, implants and oral pathology.
Regular preventive care is essential to SIUDA’s treatment philosophy. Along with regular visits, SIUDA offers bridges, fillings, crowns, dentures, X-rays and more. “SIU Dental Associates is the culmination of several years of behind-the-scenes planning and hard work,” said Bret Gruender, DMD, FAGD, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Clinical Dentistry. “Our patients can expect to be treated at SIUDA as in any other private practice.” Open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, SIUDA accepts all community clients, including SIUE students, faculty and staff. For more information or to make an appointment, visit siue.edu/dental/siu-dental-associates.

SIU Dental Associates (SIUDA) offers high-quality dental care at affordable prices for patients who are seeking a dental home in the Metro East Illinois area. Run by the SDM and staffed by its clinical faculty, SIUDA is located on SIUE’s campus at 195 University Park Dr.
Dean Bruce Rotter, DMD, helped launch SIUDA to provide support to dental faculty and the SIUE community by placing a dental clinic on campus. “Intramural faculty practice is an integral part of most dental schools in the country,” shared Rotter. “We have very talented faculty, and this practice gives them another opportunity to utilize these talents.”

Class of 2021 Achieves 100% Pass Rate on INBDE The SDM is celebrating students in the class of 2021 for achieving a 100% first-time pass rate on the new Integrated National Board Dental Exam (INBDE).
The class of 2021 has endured the particular challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic affecting both their third and fourth year of dental clinical education.
The integrated examination for dental licensure replaces the NBDE Part I and Part II, and covers the basic, behavioral and clinical sciences. According to the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations, the new exam combines content from several disciplines, requiring test takers to “integrate their knowledge of science with the clinical know-how involved in the safe practice of dentistry.”
“Despite the additional restrictions placed on them amid the pandemic, these students worked effectively to be productive and manage their patients and work toward fulfilling their graduation requirements,” said Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Saulius Drukteinis, DMD. “We also owe great thanks to SIU School of Dental Medicine faculty and staff for working so hard under the circumstances to help continue to deliver our highest standard of education.”
How INBDE differs from NBDE Part I and Part II •
INBDE relies less on rote knowledge and information recall than the NBDE examinations did
•
INBDE instead emphasizes the decision-making process relevant to the safe practice of dentistry through the integration of the basic sciences and dental and clinical science
SIU SCHOOL OF DENTAL MEDICINE
“SIU School of Dental Medicine students continue to excel with strong dedication to their academic advancement and a commitment to achieving clinical mastery,” said Dean Bruce Rotter, DMD. “We are incredibly proud of this noteworthy accomplishment.”

“The Dean’s Scholarship awards were increased in value this year thanks to one of our donors,” said Dean Bruce Rotter, DMD. “As there are no University funds attached to any of these scholarships, we are continually grateful to our generous donors for making these scholarships possible.”
“Our class is filled with spectacular individuals who have worked hard in all aspects of dental school,” added Handlin. “I am honored to have been chosen among my peers. I intend on striving to represent SIU SDM to the highest possible standard as I continue throughout my dental career.” “The clinical training we receive at SIU SDM is one of the finest available,” he continued. “Early exposure to the clinical setting leaves us with a wide array of experience and awareness that will enable us to prosper in our future careers.”
The Dean’s Scholarship was created with the goal of rewarding academic merit, assisting with financial need and increasing student diversity at the SDM.
Sherry Baker established the annual Dr. Larry Lowe Memorial Scholarship in memory of her late husband, an SDM Class of 1977 alumnus. International Advanced Placement Program student Prabhjot Kaur was “overjoyed” to have received the Dr. Larry Lowe Memorial Scholarship.
“I have always had a deep love and appreciation for academia, and I am very thankful that my academic pursuits up to this point are being recognized with the scholarship,” said Dean’s Scholarship recipient Eric Kubacki. “I aspire to one day own my own practice in a small town, where I can treat whole families and serve an entire community.”
“I have always been passionate about dentistry and teaching,” she said. “My long-term goal is to work as a faculty member in a dental school where I can utilize my knowledge and skills to help future dentists. This award money will be helpful in lessening my financial burden, as my family recently moved to the U.S., and allow me to focus on my studies.”
Kubacki will graduate in summer 2022, as will fellow Dean’s Scholarship recipient Dylan Handlin, who aspires to become an orthodontist.

The SDM continues its annual tradition of honoring exceptional students with scholarships to enhance their learning opportunities. This year, Dean’s Scholarship awards of $7,500 each were presented to Kevin Kordi, Paulina Wisniewska, Eric Kubacki and Dylan Handlin. Recipients of the Dr. Larry Lowe Memorial Scholarship included Nourah Abdul Kader and Prabhjot Kaur.
Serving the Community During a Pandemic While COVID-19 has thwarted numerous in-person engagement opportunities, individuals continue to serve through reimagined outreach efforts. The SDM demonstrated its ability to pivot and provide during National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM) in February. Throughout the month, 38 third- and fourth-year SDM students engaged with more than 600 children, teachers and parents through virtual presentations at seven area schools. Oral health topics included proper dental hygiene, tooth decay prevention, healthy diet and nutrition, oral/systemic connections, and more. “We are grateful for the teachers who made it a priority for their students to experience oral health education during National Children’s Dental Health Month,” said Director of Community Dentistry Katie Kosten, DMD. “Amid the pandemic, we know the adjustments that teachers have had to make have not been easy. We have a huge appreciation for their efforts and for the SDM’s community partners. One of the most important relationships we have is with our area teachers.” In years past, children have traveled to the Alton campus to enjoy educational activities and receive a dental screening. While the screenings were not able to be performed given COVID-19 safety restrictions, SDM students leveraged technology to significantly increase the number of students they were able to reach.
SIU SCHOOL OF DENTAL MEDICINE
“We know that oral health education is important, and in order to get the message out, we have to adapt and meet people where they are,” Kosten noted. “We look forward to continued relationships with schools, community groups, and community stakeholders in order to make a positive impact on oral and overall health.”

Celebrating Student Research Expanded reach, more in-depth presentations and real-time voting were among the highlights of this year’s SDM Research Day which was held virtually in April.
“Dr. Gregory has a rich history of mentoring students in dental research,” said Duane Douglas, DMD, director of research. “The excitement he conveyed was contagious to our potential future student researchers.” Research students overcame COVID-19induced obstacles related to their research pursuits, as well as their scholastic and clinical demands. “Our research students essentially lost the entire summer which is set aside for student research,” Douglas explained. “It was vital to host this event to recognize their efforts and share their successes with the School of Dental Medicine’s community.”
Fourth-year student Alexandra Nash (middle) earned first-place overall and the People’s Choice Award at the 2021 Research Day. She stands holding her award with Duane Douglas, DMD, director of research (left), and Dean Bruce Rotter, DMD.
Research Day Awards 1st Place Overall and American Student Dental Association People’s Choice Alexandra Nash, fourth-year student “Shear Bond Strength of Composite Resin to Silver Diamine Fluoride-Treated Carious Permanent Dentin.”
“The primary goal of the study was to measure the bond strength of a composite resin (tooth-colored filling material) to dental cavities that have been previously treated with silver diamine fluoride (SDF), a topical medication used to arrest dental decay and relieve hypersensitivity,” explained Nash. “The results suggest that SDF treatment does not adversely affect composite resin fillings.” As the first-place overall winner, Nash earned the Student Competition for Advancing Dental Research and its Application (SCADA) Award, presented by Dentsply Sirona and the American Association for Dental Research. SCADA’s mission is to advance the art and science of dentistry by introducing predoctoral students to the world of dental research. “To have had the experience to learn from my research mentors and share our findings within our professional community is an honor,” Nash said.
SDM Research Day speaker Richard Gregory, PhD, associate dean for graduate education at the Indiana University School of Dentistry.
Nash earned a DMD in June 2021 and currently is a pediatric dental resident at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

Gold Circle Club
SIU SCHOOL OF DENTAL MEDICINE
The SIU SDM’s Gold Circle Club, the School’s Distinguished Donor Recognition Society, includes alumni, faculty and friends who contribute $2,000 or more during a given fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Through their FY 2021 donations, SDM Gold Circle Club members impacted the School and our students in truly remarkable ways. Investments in the new Advanced Care Clinic, student scholarship assistance, and faculty recruitment and retention were among the most significant contributions. We are truly grateful for the tremendous support that Gold Circle Club members provide.
As a thank you to our generous Gold Circle Club donors, the SDM hosts an annual donor recognition dinner. In 2021, the School hosted this event at Anheuser-Busch in St. Louis. The evening included dinner and drinks, a visit from one of the world-famous Clydesdales and a brewery tour.
