The ultimate objective of my professional career is to equip people with the necessary skills to solve problems in developing countries, particularly in terms of educational development, and to propose effective solutions which make good use of local people and things to solve educational problems in developing countries. I believe that working for a development consultant agency dealing with educational development projects will allow me to attain my goal. At graduate school, I went on a trip to the Kubuchi desert near Mongolia in China where I took part in a forestation project. Through this tour, I developed a strong interest in cultural differences and wealth gaps in the country and between rich and poor nations. I was moved by the seriousness and would like to devote myself to working in the area of international cooperation in the future. After graduating, I chose to work for an NGO to learn about international cooperation. That was a great experience for me; however, I could come to understand the difficulty of working as a NGO member in developing countries without expertise. To get expertise and work experience, I decided to become a teacher. After working for 3 years as a public high school teacher in Japan, I applied to a volunteer work program for 2 years in a developing country. My job was to lecture and introduce methods of how to teach in Japanese primary schools in the area of mathematics to local primary school teachers in Spanish in Honduras, Central America. I worked closely with the local Board of Education in the village and lived with a Honduran family. I dedicated myself to my work and really enjoyed communicating with Honduran people. My counterpart who was a superintendent of the educational affairs in the village had a great passion for education and worked more than standard Japanese workers. Through working with her, I understood the importance of local people being educated enough to decide and solve problems in their community. To achieve my objective, it is imperative to plan and manage the projects appropriately based on deep communication and profound analysis of social, political and economic aspects in the local area. I strongly believe that I need a more sophisticated and wider knowledge. Thus, the Education and Development program at your instituion is the best course for me because this course will allow me to specialize and develop a deep understanding and better prepare me for my future goal. In the academic course, I propose the following academic objectives. First, I want to gain a fundamental knowledge of educational developments, and pursue processes contributing to not only economic development but real happiness for local people. Secondly, I want to learn a variety of methods which will in turn allow the local people to become vitalized and independent. Finally, I want to obtain the practical ability to manage projects and communication skills to build strong mutual understandings with clients.

Real-life learning for University of Portsmouth students At Portsmouth our students put theory into practice to gain valuable professional skills and increase their employability in the competitive graduate careers market.
A mock trial staged at the university, was one of many opportunities where students can get a real-life learning experience. Following an incident from the crime scene to the courtroom, allowed students to practise their skills of investigation and analysis. Hampshire Police also used the event as training for officers currently in their probationary period. University law students acted as barristers, drama students played witnesses and forensic science students provided forensic evidence. A jury of staff and student volunteers heard the evidence. Third year Law student, Chanel De Gouveia, said: “It has taken months of work to prepare for this trial so it is exciting for it to finally take place. Although it was scary and I felt quite daunted, to be inside a mock courtroom is such good experience.” “Cross-examining actual police officers was also nervewracking but an incredible learning experience – it made the whole event very authentic.” As well as using the University’s one-bedroom forensic house, the students used the University’s state-of-the-art facilities, including laboratories and analytical equipment, a brand new specialist Centre of Forensic Interviewing, which uses Home Office-standard digital equipment to
record interviews, and the mock courtroom, a replica of a crown court. Tutor in Forensic Investigation Skills, Claire Noble, said: “This is an exciting event which brings together staff and students from across the University. Students had the chance to demonstrate the professional skills they have acquired throughout their studies.” “Hampshire police officers were involved in the proceedings. The case allowed officers to practise crowd control on arrival at the staged incident, interviewing techniques and presenting evidence in court, which is part of the ongoing training they are doing with the University’s Institute of Criminal Justice Studies.” Hampshire police officers also took away video footage of the proceedings, which will be used for training purposes. Detective Constable Sheena Ives said: “Hampshire Constabulary is pleased to have been able to collaborate in this way developing the skills of its officers in various roles from crime scene management, witness and suspect interviews through to presenting evidence in court all while helping develop the skills of the students of the University of Portsmouth in so many of their teaching areas.”
