Rhody Rendezvous with old friends and new at the Rhododendron Festival, May 16 to 20, 20188

he 111th annual Florence Rhododendron Festival continues a grand tradition this

week. “Rhody Rendezvous,” this year’s theme, is intended to evoke a feeling of coming to Florence for an exciting gathering with friends and family and having a great time in Oregon’s Coastal Playground, according to Bettina Hannigan, executive director of the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce. “It’s our 111th year. After that many years, we’re pretty sure that several generations of Oregonians and other visitors have rendezvoused around our rhodies many times,” Hannigan said. The Davis Shows Northwest Carnival opens on Wednesday afternoon at the Port of Siuslaw parking lot in Historic Old Town Florence; the Rhododendron Court Coronation takes place Thursday evening at the Florence Events Center; and the town begins filling with rhody enthusiasts on Friday. Saturday features the 5K Rhody Run and Walk; the 26th annual Rhody Classic Car Show ’n’ Shine from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Grocery Outlet parking lot; the Junior Parade and Kiwanis Kids Games at noon, and the Coast Radio Classic Car Cruise from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. through Old Town. The Rhododendron Festival Grand Floral Parade is at noon on Sunday, May 20, at 27th Street and Highway 101. The parade will wend its way down Highway 101 to Kingwood Street, and from there down to Bay Street and Historic Old Town Florence. The parade ends at the Port of Siuslaw parking lot where the Davis Shows Carnival will be going strong.

“We’re looking to this year’s parade entrants to really step up again and rock the rhodies,” Hannigan said. “It’s one of the oldest floral festival parades in the west and we want every entry to have as many rhodies as possible.” Rhody Days also includes a vendor’s fair in Old Town, a spectacular rhododendron show along with live music, art and other festivities at the Florence Events Center, and Three Rivers Casino Resort will host the annual Let It Ride motorcycle show and other events. Each year during the Thursday night kick-off event at the Florence Events Center, officials crown Queen Rhododendra and The King of the Coast from area high schools as the event’s official ambassadors. Seven Siuslaw High School stu-

dents make up the Senior Court this year — along with five young princesses from Siuslaw and Mapleton elementary schools. Court members sell campaignstyle pins for $3 featuring the festival’s logo. Pins are available from court members, at the Chamber’s Visitor’s Center at 290 Highway 101 and around town. Proceeds go toward scholarships for members of the court. Pins are also good for $1 off a bowl of chowder at participating restaurants in May. The list currently includes Beachcomber Pub, Le Bouchon Café, Bay Street Grille, ICM Restaurant, Firehouse Restaurant and Homegrown Public House. Hannigan said, “There’s always so much to do in and around Florence, and the Rhododendron Festival

‘Radio’ rendezvous all weekend long

Coast Radio has been part of the “Rhody Rendezvous” since the local station began broadcasting in 1988. Participation in the weekend events and coverage of Florence’s largest annual festival has always been part of the station’s commitment to its community and listeners. Tune in to Florence’s locally owned-and-operated radio stations, KCST (106.9 FM) and KCFM (104.1 FM/1250 AM) where you can find out what’s happening and when during the 111th Rhododendron Festival. “The station has organized and sponsored events such as the Saturday car cruise and provided live coverage of the Grand Floral Parade for more than two decades,” says Coast Radio General Manager Jon Thompson. “You’ll find our staff at most of the events during the weekend.” Coast Radio’s on-air staff will broadcast from various locations all weekend, giving listeners on-

site insights from the carnival rides and midway, bustling Bay Street, and the Old Town vendor fair. Other live coverage includes Saturday’s 5K and 10K Rhody Run, the Junior Parade, and news and interviews from the Elks Lodge chicken barbecue and pie sale.

Saturday’s live coverage concludes with the KCST Classic Car Cruise and oldies broadcast from Old Town. Coverage resumes just before noon on Sunday with the Grand Floral Parade and updates from all over town. “Our stations are great companions for residents and the Florence area’s out-of-town guests to get the latest on local events, discover local resources, and get the most current daily news, weather and sports,” said Thompson. Coast Radio not only broadcasts the annual car cruise, they organize and host the entire event with the help of the Siuslaw Valley Firefighters Association. Registration for the KCST Classic Car Cruise begins at 8:30 a.m. during the Rhody Cruisers car club’s Show and Shine in the Grocery Outlet parking lot at 21st Street and Highway 101. Registration is required for all cruisers and entries are limited to the first 150 registrants of 1976 and older model vehicles.

Rhodies in bloom focus of society’s Flower Show

The annual Rhododendron Festival Flower Show and Plant Sale is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, May 19 and 20, at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. The sale runs from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Sponsored by the Siuslaw Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society, the flower show opens to the public free of charge. Community members are

welcome to bring flower trusses on Saturday from 7 to 9 a.m. to be judged by rhododendron experts. The truss must come from a plant that the owner has grown for at least six months. Ribbons will be awarded. It’s a great time to ask questions, find books and information and enjoy the beautiful colors of the season. Plant sales will take place outside the south side of the events center.

This year’s Rhododendron Festival Grand Floral Parade grand marshal is Dr. Al Brauer, named Florence’s first-ever First Citizen in 1967. Brauer was instrumental in establishing Peace Harbor Hospital, Lane Community College and its Florence campus, the Florence Rotary Club, the Alice Brauer Christian Preschool, New Life Lutheran Church and Oregon Pacific Bank, where he served as board chairman for 28 years. He moved to Florence after serving in the Marines in World War II, earning his medical degree, and serving as a medical missionary in Kenya. He established his family medical practice in 1958. Brauer said, “It was a shocker, but I’m deeply honored” about his

Rhody Days Car Show and Shine celebrates 26 years as the biggest car show in Florence. Beachkombers Car Club’s Show and Shine is Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Grocery Outlet parking lot off Highway 101. Registration begins at 8 a.m. The judged show is open to cars and trucks 1975 and older. It features more than 200 classic cars, especially British models, military vehicles, hot rods, rat rods and daily drivers, both stock and modified. Cars come from all over the Pacific Northwest to “Rhody Rendezvous” with this popular show. A favorite among locals is the car show preregistration on Friday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. “This always turns into a small car show in its self. It is a great way to make Saturday morning run smoothly,” said event organizers. Judges will give trophies and awards between 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. There will be a 50/50 drawing, raffle prizes,

hot dog booth and more. Shirts are also for sale now. Don’t miss the evening Car Cruise through Old Town, put on by KCST Coast Radio. The Rhododendron Grand Floral parade, one of the longest running events of its kind in the west, begins at noon on May 20 at 27th Street and Highway 101 and follows the highway to and through Historic Old Town. There are lots of places along the 2.5-mile route to cheer for your favorite marching band, commercial or nonprofit organization float, car club or equestrian group. But plan early. People sometimes put out their lawn chairs along the route the night before to save their favorite viewing locations. Local police and fire per-

sonnel will convert the fivelane Highway 101 into a two-lane road with one lane in each direction on the east side of the thoroughfare, allowing for some parade-goers to watch from the center turn lane. The procession zigs west one block before the Siuslaw River bridge, then zags down to Bay Street to where it disbands just past the carnival on Nopal Street.

Rhododendron Festival buttons. This year there is a delicious, old-fashioned benefit that comes with pin ownership — $1 off a bowl of clam chowder at participating restaurants. This year’s pin follows the festival’s theme, “Rhody Rendezvous” — intended to evoke memories of Rhody Days past with fun, friends, family and the fair. The festival button features images relating to the theme, including the Siuslaw River Bridge and the traditional rhododendron bloom. The committee is offering the “old-fashioned” coated metal pin for $3 this year. Proceeds go toward scholarships for Queen Rhododendra, the King of the Coast and members of the Rhody Court.

Participating restaurants — such as Bay Street Grille, Beachcomber Pub, Firehous e Rest aurant, Homegrown Public House, ICM Restaurant and Le Bouchon Café — will have a sign posted at their entrance and a participant list will be posted at www.FlorenceChamber.com. The idea for the clam chowder discount hearkens back to the days when clam chowder booths were located along the Rhododendron Festival’s parade route. The new Rhody buttons can be purchased from any of the Rhododendron Court members, from their button boxes found at businesses in Florence, and at the Chamber of Commerce Visitor’s Center, 290 Highway 101.

Rhody Weekend is filled with activities for kids and families

Beginning with the opening of Davis Shows Northwest Carnival on Wednesday afternoon at the Port of Siuslaw parking lot in Historic Old Town, Florence transforms into a city full of youth activities during Rhody Days. Youth are spotlighted during the Rhododendron Court Coronation on Thursday evening and are welcome to participate in the Rhody Run and Walk. Many of the Rhododendron Festival’s activities

are geared toward families — but two are specifically for the festival “juniors,” the Junior Parade and Kiwanis Kids Games starting at noon on Saturday. Set up begins at 11 a.m. at Miller Park for the annual Junior Parade, sponsored once again by Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue. All entries are welcome for the parade. No pre-registration is necessary. Expect fun costumes, gymnastics, bicycles, mo-

torized vehicles and at least one fire engine. The parade begins at noon and runs up Oak Street from 19th to 30th streets. The Kiwanis Club of Florence will host the Kids Games at the end of the parade route, the Siuslaw High School ball field at Oak and 27th streets. There will be games and activities with prizes and snacks for all young participants, 10 years old and younger. Expect oodles of entertainment as kids run races and play outdoor games.

Mark your calendars for a not-to-be-missed show by local and regional coastal artists and craftsmen. Presented by the Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA), the 2018 Rhody Days Arts Festival will be held at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St., during Rhody Days on Friday, May 18, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In the tradition of the arts festival, visitors will experience and delight in unique artistry and have a chance to meet the artists who have crafted these works of art. Just some of the types of artistry include: wood turning, fused glass, stained glass, bead weaving, photogra-

phy, metal work, garden décor, intarsia, fractal art, pine needle baskets, fiber arts and linens, wearable fabric art, knitted and crocheted accessories, scroll saw wood art, raku ceramics, obsidian knives, rocktography, hand painted pottery, watercolors, pyrography, lampwork beads and a variety of unique jewelry treasures that will be sure to tempt you. The show’s artists will be donating 10 percent of their sales to support the FRAA Arts Center at 120 Maple St. in Historic Old Town Florence. So bring a friend, shop for some unique treasures and support the arts. Admission is FREE.

On Sunday, there will be a breakfast and a BBQ Chicken Dinner. On both Saturday and Sunday, there will be a special treat of ice cream sundaes. ELKS SHARE SHOP: Our Share Shop/Thrift Store will be open every day during Rhody Days. Come in and check out the bargains. All clothing is $1 each and books are $.50 to $1. PIE AND BAKE SALE: The Ladies of Elks have expanded their Pie Sale to include baked goods like cookies, bars, cupcakes and much more. It will begin on Saturday, May 19th, promptly at 11 a.m. sharp – once the goodies are gone, they’re gone! Follow the signs to get to the entrance.

Saturday at 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. or until they’re sold out. The meals are scrumptious: a half chicken with potato salad and baked beans. This takes place on the south side of the Elks Lodge – just follow your nose SUNDAY BREAKFAST: On Sunday, Parade Day, start your day at the Past Exalted Rulers Breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. The BBQ Chicken Dinners on Sunday go on sale at 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. or until they’re sold out. The Elks advise that people pick up a lunch here and take it to watch the parade on the route. And those ice cream sundaes are available both days. Again, all activities will be held at the Florence Elks Lodge and all proceeds go to charities. We’ll see you there all weekend long — having fun and supporting the Florence community.
