Keynote: Jatunn Gibson, PhD, Manager “Aging in Place” Habitat for Humanity International Ms Gibson presents a national perspective of the issues facing the nation’s ballooning senior population and how communities are responding to this urgent need. “Aging in Place” is a holistic approach where Habitat collaborates with other organizations to meet older adults’ priorities by providing products and services to foster safe, livable homes and communities to improve the quality of life for older adults.

Mobile Integrative Health: Dr. William Foster, MD, PeaceHealth Hospital Dr. Foster is excited to share information about the new Mobile Integrative Health program, a collaboration among a wide range of health care providers to bring care into the community and better serve the needs of those with barriers to traditional modes of care.

It is about being prepared for the changes in your life, health, and environment that will occur as you age. An “Aging in Place” plan is not for “old people”. It’s for responsible people who want to ensure their quality of life and live 2:00 it out in dignity without being a burden on their loved ones or their community. At the “Aging in Place” forum you can learn about many resources available in the community to help you with your plan; hear from professionals about health care, finances, housing and other considerations; and meet with representatives of many local and regional organizations, agencies and companies that can help you 3:00 with your plan.

Join Mr. Herbst as he takes you through some exercises to keep you strong, flexible, and mobile while aging. You will learn about strength, endurance, flexibility, and balance, and have fun doing so! Presenter Jatunn Gibson, PhD Jatunn Gibson, PhD, Aging in Place Manager for Habitat for Humanity International, has over 25 years of experience in healthcare. She has worked in various roles to implement and evaluate programs in academic and community settings. These programs focused on the health of the aging population and their caregivers as wells as direct patient care for 15 years. In her previous role as Assistant Professor in Gerontology and Assistant Director of Family and Consumer Sciences, she had statewide responsibilities for community health and program planning. In her current role with Habitat, Jatunn is responsible for both setting and implementing the program’s strategy for Aging in Place. Aging in Place is a holistic approach where Habitat collaborates with other organizations to meet older adults’ priorities by providing products and services to foster safe, livable homes and communities to improve the quality of life for older adults. Jatunn maintains her certification as a Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) and membership in many aging-focused organizations.

Dr. William F. Foster, M.D. William F. Foster, M.D. received his medical degree from University of California at San Diego in 1987. He completed residencies from Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, Colton, California in 1993 and from Lincoln Medical Center in Bronx, New York in 2002. Dr. Foster is certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He joined the PeaceHealth medical staff in July of 2008. He is heading up the Mobile Integrated Health Program at PeaceHealth.

Presenter LCOG, Leslie Gilbert Leslie began her career with positions in case management with adults with developmental disabilities, and professional education about diverse learners at the University of Oregon. She has worked as the Health Promotion/Chronic Disease Prevention Coordinator for LCOG Senior and Disability Services for over three years. This position is perfect for her because her passion is patient education and empowerment. Having experienced disability her whole life, she values the opportunity to help others understand and manage their health to the best of their ability. In her position, she coordinates health education workshops called the Living Well Programs; these workshops help adults with chronic health conditions learn how to better cope with and improve their health conditions through sleep, exercise, nutrition, relaxation, and so much more. Leslie developed additional skills and knowledge when she recently completed a Master of Public Health degree from Oregon Health Sciences University. When Leslie is not working, she enjoys movies, cooking, and spending time with her partner and their dog, Charlie. Presenters-Emergency Responders

Sergeant Denton Tipler grew up in Springfield, Oregon. After high school he attended college and earned his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice. He joined the Florence Police Department as a Reserve Police Officer in 2011 and was hired on full time as a Police Officer in 2013. Denton was certified as a Drug Recognition Expert in 2015 and promoted to Sergeant in 2018. He is also a Field Training Officer who is responsible for the training and evaluation of new officers.

Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue Chief Jim Langborg Jim Langborg has been in the Fire Service for over 25 years and involved in EMS for over 30 years. He got his start in the USAF where he served as Medic. Jim is committed to a community approach for both public safety and health care and believes that it takes village to ensure the well being of our community and the people who live in it. Jim is also a member of the Peace Health Community Health Board and is married to his wonderful wife Tina. Together they have a 26 year old daughter who lives in Vancouver, WA.

Matt House is the Western Lane Ambulance District Emergency Medical Services Chief. He will speak about WLAD’s role in the Mobile Integrated Heatlhcare program. This program is designed to bridge gaps in healthcare needs, provide options to high healthcare system utilizers and improve overall medical services to our region.

Presenters-Social/Recreation Panel Russ Pierson, LCC Russ Pierson is a GreenFaith fellow, earned a Doctor of Ministry in Global Leadership from George Fox University and holds several sustainability-related cetiifications. He served as the Associate Director of Facilities Management and Planning and the Transportation Coordinator at Lane Community College prior to accepting his current assignment as Dean of LCC’s Florence Center in March 2015. Russ has an intriguing, mixed-up background in construction management, the faith community and higher education, and he is currently serving as a Conversation Project leader around Faith and Politics with Oregon Humanities. He has contributed to Huffington Post, Justice Unbound, Sojourners, A Matter of Spirit, The Siuslaw News and is a frequent presenter at education-related conferences. Russ also begins a term as President of the Board of the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce in June. He loves great conversations, his wife Tami, three adult children and his three grandboys, among other things.

Justin Helberg, Honeyman State Park My name is Justin Helberg. I am the Park Manager at Honeyman State Park. I was raised in Florence, Oregon and graduated from Siuslaw High School. I attended college at Oregon State University and have worked for Oregon Parks and Recreation Department for 20 years. I care deeply about this community and the community's connection to Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park and its resources.

Kristin Anderson, FRAA Kristin Anderson spent 26 years working as engineer, manager and director of Engineering at Hewlett-Packard and MontaVista Software. In retirement, Kristin turned her focus to fused glass art which led to her work with Florence Regional Arts Alliance in Florence, OR, of which she is currently President. She loves combining her love of working with people with her love of art and FRAA allows her this synergy. Kristin’s goals at FRAA include creating an environment in Florence for artists to meet and create together and working with the local youth providing a venue for them to learn how to promote and sell their artwork. Kristin is also a member of the Backstreet Gallery Co-op leading their marketing team. Kristin has an BS and MS in Engineering from Santa Clara University and an Management of Technology from National Technology University.

Presenters John Herbst, Coastal Fitness John Herbst is a Colorado native living there for 49 years. He became a full time Personal Trainer in 2004 while living in Colorado and has been continuing this occupation ever since. John has lived in Florence for a total of 8.5 years and working at Coastal Fitness for 7 of those years. John is a senior and currently 95 % of his clients are also seniors. Perhaps this is due to the fact he can relate to the issues of aging and because he has been at the health club for 7 years. John does strength, endurance, flexibility, and balance training with all his clients, no matter their gender or age. John finds that several people think they can lose weight by exercising. This is partly true, however John likes the saying- lose weight in the kitchen and get fit in the gym. This is especially true as we age. Our lifestyle changes, there are hormonal changes, wear and tear on our joints, and gravity issues with the physical body.

Mary Shaw, Farmers Market Mary Shaw has been a whole foods teacher and advocate for over two decades. After working at the Ashland Food Co-op as the Education Coordinator and serving on the Rogue Valley Food System Network for 12 years, she retired and moved with her husband to Florence where she has continued her work as was a driving force in the founding of the new Florence Farmers Market. She also leads a group of dedicated and experienced food specialists who provide cooking demonstrations for several local service organizations. Frances Klippel Frances Klippel has lived in Florence for 18 years. She has spent years honing her crafts as healer, herbalist, creator of concoctions, potions, and recipes that are healthy and natural. She volunteers at Lane Community College with English as a Second Language and Citizenship classes. She is active in the Big Wave poetry group and the Florence Baha’i Community. She is a committed volunteer in the effort to support local food production and sales. And she loves to dance!

Aging in Place Forum Partners OUR MISSION: To improve the quality of life in Western Lane County through partnerships, networking, volunteerism, community involvement, education and awareness

PARTNER: AARP OF LANE COUNTY Two staff members from AARP Lane County will be at the AARP exhibitors’ booth to provide information and answer questions about AARP’s Smart Driver Course from 10:00-12:00 and 2:00-4:00, and their AARP Foundation Tax-Aide services from 12:00-2:00. The Smart Driver Course can be taken in a classroom or online and teaches learners evidence-based safe driving techniques and smart useful tips for navigating today’s traffic. Completion of this course may qualify you for multiyear discounts on your car insurance. The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program is a volunteer-based free service offering tax preparation and tax counseling according to your individual needs. Since 1968 this program has helped nearly 50 million taxpayers. Each year welltrained AARP Tax Aide volunteers offer free income tax assistance at the Siuslaw Public Library during tax season. AARP is heavily involved in the issue of “Aging in Place”, and has gathered many resources on the AARP website to help seniors and those who care for seniors to plan for successful “aging in place”. In addition, the AARP Public Policy Institute and the National Conference of State Legislatures published two research reports. The first was entitled “Aging in Place: A State Survey of Livability Policies and Practices”, the second was “Aging in Place: A Toolkit for Local Governments. Habitat for Humanity also advocates for universal design and a holistic approach to Aging in Place through education and outreach, shared practices, strategic partnerships and research. Florence Habitat for Humanity (FHFH) also offers our “Ramps and Rails” program which helps low-income veterans, disabled individuals and elderly homeowners remain in their home by providing simple home modifications. These projects include wheelchair ramps, grab-bars, interior and exterior handrails, replacing light switches with rocker style switches and lever style door knobs.
