Home & Garden Show grows into 23rd year

etter weather, longer days and the annual Florence Home & Garden Show are signs that spring has arrived. The three-day show opens 2 p.m. this Friday, March 6, at the Florence Events Center and continues all weekend. Residents will be springing forward to standard time over the weekend.

More than 40 vendors will offer new ideas, products and services at the 23rd annual Home & Garden Show. The event incorporates vendor exhibits, landscape design, food tasting, demonstrations, prizes and giveaways.

Located at the center of the Florence Home and Garden Show, this year’s centerpiece landscape design is titled “Australian Gardens.” It features modern trends to make the most out of smaller garden spaces. There will be low maintenance planting ideas for lawn substitutes and xeriscaping, with exciting new trends in plant collections and colors.

“As our climate gets warmer, we are finding that the plant palette is changing for our coastal gardens,” Walter-Sedlacek said. “We are excited to showcase Laurel Bay’s Garden Center and our extensive inventory of DIY landscape plants, pottery and our new line of polished rock.”

Laurel Bay Garden’s Home Show booth will also give everyone a chance to “Shop the Market” with new and colorful home and garden décor.

Explore the variety of colorful linens, chandi woven rugs, bamboo wind chimes and pollinator and bird habitat ideas for your home and garden.

How to help bring beneficial bees back Bees, birds and butterflies play integral roles in pollinating many of the crops humans rely on for sustenance.

The National Pollinator Garden Network, through the National Wildlife Federation, recently launched the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge, an effort to increase the amount of nectar and pollen food sources as the organization aims to reverse the alarming decline of pollinators such as honey bees, native bees and monarch butterflies.

Many people are afraid of bees because of their propensity to sting. Unlike their wasp and yellow-jacket cousins, honeybees and

bumblebees are much more docile and content to hop from bloom to bloom without paying humans any mind. The only time such bees may resort to stinging is if someone inadvertently steps on them.

Bees are beneficial for yards. Gardener’s Supply Company says one out of every three bites of food humans take depends on a pollinator. That’s because about 150 crops grown in the United States depend on pollinators.

Even though there are 4,000 species of native or wild bees in the continental United States, many populations are in decline.

According to the Pollinator

Partnership, various areas of North America have lost more than 50 percent of their managed honeybee colonies in the past 10 years.

Bringing these important pollinators back will take a little work, but it is possible.

• Plants that offer cover can be attractive to bees that desire a respite from the sun and heat. Coleus and other ground cover offerings can be handy.

• Offer water in shallow dishes, as even bees need a cool drink to stay hydrated.

• Bees like various plants, so plant more than one species. Some plants that bees tend to like include alyssum, aster, geranium, bee balm, poppies and clover.

• When planting, include native species.

• Brush piles, dry grasses and dead woods offer nesting areas for bees.

• The Gardener’s Supply Company also says that bees find blue, purple and yellow flowers most appealing. Opt for more of these hues when planning gardens.

• Above all, avoid using pesticides in the yard. Even organic ones can be toxic to bees and other pollinators, and they may contribute to colony collapse disorder.

With these techniques in mind, homeowners can attract more bees to their yards and gardens, which can benefit bees and humans alike.

C. James Nursery C. James Nursery specializes in Down Under Pots, an innovative way to display the beauty of your favorite plants. Designed to hang, the Down Under Pot allows your plants to grow from the bottom of the pot.

One of the design features of the Down Under Pot is an internal reservoir, at the base of the pot. The reservoir catches water where the root system is developing, thus feeding the plant and providing the root system with a wall upon which to anchor. It’s a simple process to plant.

Start the normal way, with the pot full of “soil” and the plant at the top. Allow the pot to remain in this “normal” position until you are satisfied that the plant is established. Then invert the pot and hang it using the wire, which is already fitted to the pot for the purpose.

The plant has established its root system and is now growing in the potting mix in the Down Under Pot. It is the design of the pot and the established root system of the plant that keep both the

plant and the potting mix from falling out.

When the pot is in the initial position, sit it in a shallow container to keep the potting mix moist while the plant establishes. Once the pot has been inverted and is hanging in position, water and fertilize through the top of the pot.

Deer, which live on all continents except Antarctica, can survive in everything from mountainous areas to wet rainforests to suburban neighborhoods. These herbivores are voracious eaters that will search far and wide for their meals. Home landscapes tend to be easy pickings for foraging deer.
