Miserably Marvelous

FL O RE N CE

CROW presents “The Addams Family Musical” in four shows April 21-23 at Florence Events Center he frightfully delightful world of Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Grandma, Wednesday, Pugsley and Lurch Addams will come to life April 21 through 23 at the Florence Events Center, as Children’s Repertory of Oregon Workshops (CROW) presents “The Addams Family Musical.” This mainstage spectacle is based on the characters created by cartoonist Charles Addams, which later became a hit television show — with an incredibly catchy score — and two movies. Starring in “The Addams Family” are Alex Saindon as Morticia; Jake Molano as Gomez; Ceasar Castillo as Lurch; Jacob Ternyik as Uncle Fester; Kristin Owens as Wednesday; Hannah Rasmussen as Grandma; and Owen Harklerode and Andre Felkins as Pugsley. The Beinekes, a “normal” family, are played by William Owens and Alizabeth Norton as Mal and Alice and Cameron Utz as their son Lucas. Is this enough to give you chills? The CROW entourage of youth from elementary through high school play a chorus of Addams family ancestors and extras. In the musical, 18-year-old Wednesday Addams is getting married to a boy named Lucas, and she asks Gomez to keep it secret from her mother, Morticia. As you can imagine, this is not an easy task for Gomez. The Addams family bond is put to the test when the Beinekes, come to dinner. Their mere presence throws the whole evening into a tumultuous spin, eventually changing everyone’s lives forever. In a prolific career spanning six decades, Charles Addams created several thousand cartoons, sketches and drawings, many of which were published in The New Yorker. But it was his creation of The Addams Family characters that brought him his greatest acclaim. His unique drawings combined the twisted, macabre and just plain weird with charm, wit and enchantment. The musical is equally enchanting, with a wonderful book by

T

Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, and score by Andrew Lippa. Nonprofit youth theater organization CROW is excited to take on this project, especially considering there is no “Jr.” in the title. “Simply put, this means that ‘The Addams Family’ musical is the big show, not one that is specially crafted for kids,” says CROW Artistic Director Melanie Heard. “Of course, CROW obtained special permission to remove a few inappropriate jokes, but other than that, Florence audiences will see the regular version of the show. And trust us, you’re going to love it!” “The Addams Family” features over 50 young stars ranging in age from four to early 20’s. CROW prides itself on providing the highest caliber production values, including costumes, sets and special effects one might find in much larger metro areas. The show features wonderful songs, funny and sweet scenes between characters, and extravagant dances, including the infamous “Tango de Amor” between Gomez and Morticia Addams. CROW always has surprises planned, and this show is no exception. And, as always, funds raised from ticket sales directly benefit local youth — providing scholarships to summer camps, purchasing royalties and materials for shows, classes, camps and events, and helping to finalize the renovations on the CROW Center for the Performing Arts. “The Addams Family Musical” is family-friendly and appropriate for all ages. There will be four public performances, April 21 at 7 p.m., April 22 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and April 23 at 2 p.m.. Tickets are $18 for adults and $9 for youth 12 and under. For tickets, visit eventcenter.org or call the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St., at 541-997-1994. For more information on the show and the CROW program, visit www.crowkids.com.

“Grief or PTSD? Check it out Some of us have been through tough times in our lives; things that give us a perspective on life that is not so uplifting. We have gone through things that have “taken the wind out of our sails.” Maybe it’s that we have endured the separation or death of a loved one, or maybe we have lost someone significant we cared for. It might be that we ourselves have gone through some debilitating circumstance; the losses of health or maybe circumstances have turned against us. Even when these things happen to us, upon us, our lives as seen from an Eternal Available now from Triune dimension can take on a completely different set of rules, vision, and contemplation than imagined before www.westbowpress.com

COOS BAY — From April 14 to July 1, 2017 Coos Art Museum will be exhibiting Palimpsest: Art by Katherine Chang Liu and Eileen Senner. The word palimpsest is defined as something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form. In their artworks, both artists explore the concept of traces of the past or other objects visible within the compositions of their works. Both Senner and Chang Liu are residents of southern California and Chang Liu is the juror of the concurrent Expressions West exhibition. Eileen Senner has been awarded two National Endowment for the Arts Visual Art Fellowships and several Scripps College Faculty Research Grants. She earned her Master of Fine Arts degree from Claremont Graduate University. Her art is in the collections of Yale University Art Gallery and Pomona College Museum of Art, and has been exhibited throughout the United States. “Painting reminds me of what I don’t know but what I recognize as familiar. I pursue this just-beyondreach ancient wisdom using fragmented classical torsos and fleeting wild animal ‘ghosts’ in the search for what’s left, what endures, remains, sustains — what it means to be an embodied, wild, beautiful human animal,” Senner said. Katherine Chang Liu combines abstractions with collaged elements to produce strong personal narratives and wonderful painterly works. She has been a museum co-curator, lecturer and teacher of considerable international influence. With her extensive background, she has been the invited

Experience culture at South CROW dancers Coast Celtic Fest on April 22 about to take ‘Flight’ FLORENCE — Starting in May 2017, local youth nonprofit performing arts group CROW will assemble a brand new “Flight” Dance Team. There will be only 14 to 16 spaces available, and dancers (ages 10+) will be required to audition to be a part of this professional dance group, taught by Melanie Heard. Auditions will be held each year in May, and dancers will have to re-audition each year. According to CROW Flight Director, Melanie Heard, “Being selected for Flight is a privilege, and high behavior standards and professionalism will be expected from all dancers at all times. This is going to be a tough but very worthy endeavor for our Flight kids. We are very excited about the possibilities!” CROW Flight Dance Team goals include: Teaching fun, innovative, and creative choreography to local kids, and looking for opportunities to perform them, such as at community events, in local performances and in the Holly Jolly Follies each year. Eventually taking the group to dance competitions (within driving distance) to compete in various categories. This will happen when CROW feels that the dancers have developed enough to be competitive in a particular category. Expanding CROW kids’ repertoire to

include all forms of dance, including ballet/lyrical, jazz, tap, musical theater and more. This will benefit the program in many ways, including increased capability for harder and more varied choreography in mainstage musicals. Building stronger dance technique. Although many of local dancers are good performers, they can use significant improvement in their basic dance technique (in all styles). This group will provide an opportunity for much more one-on-one interaction with Melanie, and allow her to really focus on the needs of each member. Creating a sense of belonging to a team — it will be an honor to be selected to be on the Dance Team. Not all who audition will be invited to participate, so being chosen is a reward in itself. The 2017 Flight audition will take place on Saturday, May 20, at noon at the CROW Center for the Performing Arts, 3120 Highway 101 in Florence. Interested students should wear dance attire and bring ballet or jazz shoes for the audition. A dance combination will be taught. Rehearsals generally will be held Tuesday nights from 4 to 5:30 p.m. For more information, including costs, participation requirements and scholarship opportunities, visit www.crowkids.com and click on the “Dance Team” tab.

‘Anything Goes’ at Chorale Concert YACHATS — On Saturday, May 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Yachats Commons, the Central Coast Chorale spring concert always has an “anything goes” theme. The Chorale gets to sing whatever it wants! This year it will present a bouquet of roses with two of Morten Lauridsen’s Rose songs, La Rose Complete and Dirait On, and James Mullholland’s setting of Robbie Burns’ A Red, Red Rose. Stay in the British Isles for another traditional piece, Early One Morning in an arrangement by the King’s Singers, and sing John

Tavener’s lovely Song for Athene, familiar to many from its performance at Princess Diana’s funeral. The Chorale will add some famous composers with pieces by Stephen Sondheim, Eric Whitacre, Maurice Duruflé and John Williams. “We think this song selection will result in an extravagantly beautiful event,” the group said. The Chorale is pleased to bring this concert to three locations on the central coast, in Newport on April 30, in Lincoln City on May 5, and in Yachats on May 6.

‘SPRING HAS SPRUNG’ AT ARTIST LOFT GALLERY COOS BAY—The Artist Loft Gallery, now at its new home at 367 Anderson Ave. in Coos Bay, is hosting an areawide open art show through April. The theme is “Spring has Sprung.” The Artist Loft Gallery, founded in 2003, is inviting artists of any level who work in any medium to enter. There will

be three cash prizes and several Honorable Mention ribbons. The first place winner will also have a one-month show at the gallery. The show will run to April 29. For details, email CoastArtOregon@ gmail.com, stop by the gallery or call 541-756-4088.

Little Dickens winners featured at Backstreet FLOWERS BLOOM

Painter Julie Strecker and silversmith Patti Williams won the Best of Show awards at the Little Dickens Miniature Show last December at Backstreet Gallery. That win allows both artists to exhibit more of their work at the Gallery throughout the month of April. Award-winning painter Julie Strecker is the owner of Old Town Coffee and Gallery, a local “art hub.” Enjoy a cup of coffee and view her paintings and pastels along with other artwork displayed there. Julie loves interacting with her customers, many of whom are local artists. They congregate there to create, critique and find out what’s happening in Florence’s art world. Her subject matter includes the Oregon shore, local architecture and people just doing what they love. Creating with attention to detail, she interplays light with strong color in her paintings. About 20 years ago when she owned a bakery in Colorado, Julie took a watercolor class and was hooked. A few years later, she took up pastels. Julie settled in Florence 11 years ago and has continued to expand as an artist. After taking classes in clay at LCC, she invested in equipment and now

creates pottery out of her home. An award-winning artist with a fine arts degree, Patti Williams has shown her work in museums and galleries throughout California. Sacramento TV aired a lesson she taught on jewelry making. Patti’s silver jewelry may include scrolling filigree silver and lampwork beads. Because she is also an accomplished painter, she now captures Oregon by melting small bits of glass into tiny painterly scenes on her lampwork beads. After watching a baby whale “spy hop” in and out of the water, she designed the piece entered in the Dickens show. The finished pendant shows a whale spouting delicate silver swirls of water. Patti loves plants, nature and light. Light glowing through a translucent leaf or petal as well as outlining the Siuslaw River Bridge inspires her to paint in either watercolor or oil. At Florence Regional Art Alliance (FRAA), she teaches a class in oil painting with a palette knife. Her piece “Mystic River” was recently accepted into FRAA’s Florence Fest at the Florence Events Center. The

Tru the Painting Dog

ru the Painting Dog will be showing her work at Old Town Coffee in Florence for the month of April. Tru is an artist, philanthropist, champion trick dog, truffle dog and sometimes a dog just being a dog. As an artist, Tru’s preferred medium is working with acrylics. She enjoys the flow of the paint as it touches the canvas and the flow of treats into her mouth after each stroke of the paint brush. As a philanthropist, some

of Tru’s donations have been to Fraudville (a fundraiser event for the boys and girls club), Bark For Life (canine event for the American Cancer Society) and Dancing with Sea Lions Gala Auction event. As a champion trick dog, Tru has her favorite tricks she preforms throughout the day. Tru also enjoys walking on Bay Street and if a passer-by gives her attention, it is time to perform tricks. As a truffle dog, Tru loves getting out among the trees and using her nose. When she

is on the hunt for the underground treasure she enjoys an occasional squirrel distraction. Tru has donated truffles to the Siuslaw High School’s Culinary Arts class. Tru also enjoys just being a dog with long hikes on the sand dunes or wooded trails, playing fetch and sleeping. Tru’s paintings, and the work of other local artists, can be seen every day in April from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Old Town Coffee in Florence, 125 Nopal St.

BANDON — “Bronze” photographs by Jan Cedras Ayers and bronze sculpture by Ken Ayers will be on display at the Bandon Public Library Art Gallery through April 30. A photographer of wide-ranging interests, Jan Cedras Ayers began photographing her husband Ken's bronze sculptures to make a record of them, when she found herself enthralled by the way the light moved over them, the colors and reflections captured in their surfaces. She saw a potential for making photographic studies of them as stand-alone works of abstract art. As she makes these explorations of composition and light, her photographs become topographies of stunning depth

and complexity. Ken Ayers' sculptures begin as bits of kelp, stems, pieces of driftwood, slender, vine-wrapped trunks, bits of twine or cloth, and become fantastical bronze flowers and plants from another world. These twisting, dancing creations may be made from a single element, or may incorporate several pieces from different sources bound together to create something unknown in nature, but which clearly reference the familiar, natural world. Their mysterious forms are studies in grace, often seeming almost airborne despite their weight. Bandon Public Library is at 1204 11th St. SW. For more information, call 541-347-3221.
