2019 marks 125 years of Heceta Head Lightstation

H

eceta Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast, next to the lighthouse halfway between Florence and Yachats, will be celebrating its momentous 125th anniversary all year. A full calendar of special events allows more people to experience the historic Lightkeeper’s Home and raise funds to support the interpretive center and restoration of the property. Heceta Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast resides in the Lightkeeper’s Home — a duplex built in 1894 for the two assistants and their families. The head lightkeeper’s house was sold and dismantled when the lighthouse was able to operate via electricity in the early 1930s. This makes the Assistant Keeper’s Home a true treasure as it is one of very few lightkeeper’s homes remaining. During this 125th birthday year, a few winter and spring events have been created for the public to experience what it was like to be a lightkeeper. Here’s the line up! A gourmet seven-course brunch and a docent-led historic home tour are scheduled for Thursday, March 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This not only includes a tour of the first floor, but a rare opportunity to tour the second level of the Lightkeeper’s Home. The recipes for the 7 Course Brunch are from the Lighthouse Breakfast Cookbook and based on a long standing tradition created by the founders of the Bed and Breakfast which is served daily to overnight guests. Each course is presented with information about the local sourcing of the ingredients and interesting stories that inspired the recipe. The cost is $60 per person, service charge included. Advance reservations required. Heceta Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast is also

introducing the Speaker in the Parlor Series, offering home-baked pastries and fresh fruit along with local Green Salmon coffee and Oregon Stash teas. Guests will enjoy listening to special guest presenters who will share historical stories of what life was like as a lightkeeper and lightstation resident. These tales and stories about the families and visitors who were dedicated to being keepers of the brightest light on the Oregon coast are sure to be entertaining and thought provoking in the home’s warm, intimate setting. The dates for the series are Wednesdays, March 13 and April 24, from noon to 2 p.m. Cost is $25 per person. Advanced reservations required. March 30th marks the day that Heceta Head’s First Order Fresnel Lens was lit and set into operation. Come to the Heceta Head Lightstation Birthday Party from 4 to 7 p.m. to celebrate 125 years! This is a free community event where you can enjoy hot dogs from Taylor Sausages, refreshments, cupcakes, live entertainment and special presentations by local agencies that all have been a part of Heceta Head Lightsta-

tion’s history. The Interpretive Center is open and people can meet docents and community members. Springtime brings a Spring Tea & Mother’s Day Tea. The culinary team will serve a delectable selection of fruit, sandwiches, desserts, and local Oregon Stash teas amidst fresh flowers and artful table settings in the main dining room and parlors. Relax and enjoy the lightkeeper’s home as your own for a family style gathering. A brief history talk and visit to the Gift Shop will be available for those who are interested. The Spring Tea is scheduled for Wednesday, March 20, from 12:30 to 3:30pm. Mother’s Day Tea is scheduled on Mother’s Day Sunday, May 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Both teas are $60 per person, service charge included. Advanced reservations required. Feeling adventurous? An hour-long Spring Equinox hike will be led by a local guide on trails around Heceta Head Lightstation at 4 p.m. after the Spring tea. Meet in the culinary gardens behind the Keeper’s Home at 3:50 pm. This will be a beginner-to-moderate level hike. No reservations required, dress weather appropriate. Are you interested in another date for one of our offerings? Heceta Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast can provide personal experiences for private parties, weddings and events on other dates and tailor special experiences for you with custom services for day or overnight retreats. Keep an eye on the Heceta Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast Facebook page and www.hecetalighthouse.com for more information. To make a reservation, call 866-547-3696.

WWII-era glamour comes with vintage burlesque show

P

in-Ups On Tour, billed as “a good time for a great cause,” is a patriotic World War II-style stage revue coming to the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St., on Sunday, March 10, at 2 p.m. The Friends of the Florence Events Center are bringing the vintage burlesque and variety revue from Las Vegas to town for anyone with an appetite for the era’s nostalgia, including retired and active military veterans/active duty personnel and their families. From the moment guests enter the

event, they will be treated to something special. The nationally-touring troupe’s goal is to recreate the magic of the Hollywood Canteen of the 1940’s as a club offering dancing, refreshments and entertainment for service members on their way overseas. The afternoon promises dancing showgirls, comedy, variety acts, soulful lounge singers, vintage candy girls and more than a few surprises. Performers include Los Angeles- and Las Vegas-based comedians, singers and dancers. In-uniform color guard

and ushers will be provided by local veterans’ organizations. With entertainment and atmosphere around every turn, attendees will feel like they stepped into another

era. Vintage attire for the audience is encouraged. “This is the G-rated family show version. You would feel comfortable bringing your mother to this show,” says Friends of the Florence Events Center President Kirk Mlinek. The performance is centered on singing, dancing and comedy. Pin-Ups On Tour provides low or no-cost entertainment for veterans as part of its morale-boosting mission. Proceeds from shows go to support their work entertaining U.S. veterans

inside and outside of VA hospitals. Advance tickets are available at www.EventCenter.org or at the FEC box office for $20 (adults) and $10 (under 18). Doors open at 1 p.m. and concessions will be available. Admission for veterans and active-duty service members is free as the show’s producers’ way of saying “Thank you for your service.” For information on the touring group, visit pinupsontour.com. For tickets, visit event eventcenter.org, call the Florence Events Center at 541997-1994, or visit the box office.

2019 Season begins for MainlyPiano House Concerts Spring is in the air at the South Kathy Parsons’ MainlyPiano House Concert Series will start the 2019 season with two great concerts in March. Both are solo piano and will be performed on Kathy Parsons’ grand piano. Fresh from a three-city concert tour of Russia this past January, pianist/composer David Hicken will return to Florence for a solo piano concert on Sunday, March 3, at 3 p.m. Trained as an organist from an early age in England, Hicken switched to piano early in his career. He left England at the age of 17 to study at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore and has performed in concerts internationally. He has released 10 solo piano albums and four organ albums to date. From tender and delicate to bold with a lot of bravado, Hicken is a pianist/composer who knows no bounds and has the technical ability to play just about anything he can imagine. Although his music is often difficult to categorize, Hicken’s love of the music of Bach and other classical composers often makes itself heard in his music. Hicken last performed in Florence in March 2015 to a wildly enthusiastic audience. He doesn’t per-

form in concert often, but his longtime friendship with Parsons will again give the people of the Florence area the opportunity enjoy the music of this exceptional artist in an intimate setting. MainlyPiano’s second concert will feature worldrenowned pianist/composer Jim Chappell on Thursday, March 28, at 7 p.m. Since the independent release of his 1985 breakthrough solo piano collection, “Tender Ritual,” Chappell has been acknowledged as one of contemporary music’s most engaging composers and performers. With 20 albums to his credit, including his 2017 “The Best of Jim Chappell,” he has toured world-wide to sold out audiences. Chappell will be releasing a new album this year, so he will be performing a combination of newer pieces along with many older favorites. There is a suggested donation of $20 at the door. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Parsons at 541-999-9720 or emailing her at kathypiano@gmail.com. The address and directions will be given when reservations are made. CDs and sheet music will be available and can be autographed by the artists.

Slough Reserve in March

This photography collection is from special places to the artist, and most have been taken in the PNW. Spring is now in the air, so come take a virtual walk with her into the outdoors as we poke our noses into flowers and smell the sweet scents of spring. Watch a dragonfly land on the end o shovel handle. Take a stroll on our Oregon beaches and feel the sand between your toes. Hike into the forest and mountains for some fresh air and scenic spaces. There are so many sights to see. Meet the artist and relax as you enjoy light refreshments provided by the Friends of the South Slough Reserve, Inc. The show will remain on display through the end of April. People can RSVP via www.southsloughestuary.org. 2nd Saturday Gallery Tour features Florence arts, galleries each month

Florence art lovers are set to explore the arts on Saturday, March 9, for the 2nd Saturday Gallery Tour, a monthly reception where galleries and art spaces celebrate art, artists and patrons of the art. The tour runs from 3 to 5 p.m. and begins at any of the participating locations.

Backstreet Gallery presents “Zen,” a show of the magical pairing of mixedmedia paintings by Pattie Brooks-Anderson with photography by Stephanie Ames. Pattie works intuitively, often not realizing the image until she nears completion. Poetry, quotes, philosophy, native culture, meditation and beach walks inspire her. Her signature painting style sets her apart from other watercolorists. Stephanie takes her photography to an exceptional level of expertise. In addition to the practiced eye for composition and a great camera, she captures light in a unique way. Whether the subjects are humming birds in flight, storm clouds

over the ocean, sun rays sifting through the mist or trucks abandoned in a field, the results are a lesson in awe. The gallery tour reception also brings music from Sunny Sundstrom.

Florence Regional Arts Alliance will feature the beautiful oil paintings of local artist John Leasure and the vibrant artwork of high school student Elissa Hurley during the month of March. Visitors will enjoy artwork and refreshments and will be treated to an “Art Demo.” For the past 27 years, John has taught oil painting classes in Florence, including the Wallflowers and Wine nights. He has exhibited in many Florence venues. Elissa’s work will be featured on the Youth Wall. She is an active junior at Siuslaw High School, enjoying art classes and playing sports. Most of her drawings and other art pieces are her experimenting and/or expressing her feelings, often using bright colors and “things that pop.”

March lineup comes to Three Rivers Florence—Every weekend in March, Three Rivers Casino Resort invites the community to Blue Bills Sports Bar & Tap Room, located inside the casino at 5647 Highway 126, which will be featuring live shows performed by top local artists. These shows will be from 7 to 11 p.m. There is no cover charge, but patrons must be 21 or older to attend. To learn more about Three Rivers Casino Resort and the March entertainment line-up at Blue Bills Sports Bar & Tap Room, visit threeriverscasino.com/ events. March 1 & 2 — Come hear amazing jazz, delta blues and gypsy jazz hits from Allen Giaridinelli Hot Club! Known for his distinct acoustic guitar sounds, Allen has been playing music for 3 decades throughout 35 countries. March 8 & 9 —The Saultry Trio displays the sultry voice of Sarah Saul.
