W
eekend passes and single show tickets for the 16th annual Florce Winter Music Festival are on sale ow. The three-day extravaganza takes ace at the Florence Events Center on n. 12 to 14 and showcases a variety of ternational touring talent and world ass artisans, along with a wealth of lolly sourced cuisine and fine libations. “The overall idea is to bring business to Florence at a time of year when the cal establishments need it the most,” id festival producer Howie Cusack. We’re trying to brighten the dark days January. We’ve got a three-day celeation of internationally known music d world-class artisans. No one else in ur region has that.” On Saturday, Jan. 13, at “The Main vent,” the legendary Brit folk rocker Stewart performs his multi-platinum Year of The Cat” hits, along with Oron’s favorite young storytelling troudour, John Craigie. The highly anticipated “Friday Night Throwdown” pairs e Appalachian bluegrass stylings of Grammy winning on Laurie Lewis and her band alongside the blistering mericana banjo and mandolin virtuosity of Jeff Scrogns & Colorado. “The stage will ignite, they’re so hot,” Cusack said of the pening act, adding that Lewis is welcome to play long into e night. The “Supersession 16,” which runs from 10:30 a.m. until 30 p.m. on Jan. 13, is a memorable musical marathon aturing the Celtic energy of the Portland-based Castlewn, the roots harmonies of northern California’s Calavas, the folk rhythms of Cabin Fever NW and the heartfelt ngs of Pretty Gritty. “Castletown will start us off Saturday with a bang,” Winr Music Festival Coordinator Rachel Pearson said. “At
10:30 a.m., people will be dancing. And we’re ending with a bang, too.” The afternoon will end with the rockin’ western swing of rising Canadian favorites, Petunia & The Vipers. The Gospel Gumbo Gathering scheduled for Sunday afternoon, Jan. 14, presents some of the central coast’s finest choir members performing traditional and contemporary selections under the direction of Florence musician Marty Adams. Florence Events Center's exclusive caterer Pavilion Catering will provide a lunch of hearty, authentic gumbo and cornbread. The festival closes with a roof raising performance by the popular Eugene and University of Oregon a capella group, On the Rocks. “They brings in a little different charge for this,” Cusack

said. “We’re going to span the generations with the Gospel Gumbo Gathering.” The University of Oregon students will wrap up the entire festival. “The day will be a celebration of faith, life and music rolled into one,” Cusack said. The festival, presented by Friends of the FEC and Sea Lion Caves, has a whole slew of Florence-area and Oregon-based sponsors, including Brandborg Winery, KLCC and Ninkasi Brewing. The wine and beer vendors will be exclusive pourers during Florence Regional Arts Alliance’s (FRAA) Artisan Fair Jan. 12 and 13, also at the event center. Admission to the Artisan Fair is free. Vendors include FRAA members, local groups such as the Rhododendron Quilt Guild and many more fine artists. Cusack said, “We’re bringing artistry into a small setting where we can be up close and personal with people. The FEC, at the end of the day, is a really excellent venue. Every seat in there is good.” The organizers hope that the caliber of music, art and vendors will encourage repeat visitors to Florence, especially as some groups, including On the Rocks, will appear in the area for the first time. “We’re all united in trying to do something good for the community and promote Florence,” Cusack said. “We’re trying to grow the businesses and provide something that hasn’t been done quite to this extent. ... There’s a lot of talent here in Florence, and we intend to tap every bit of it.” Tickets are on sale at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. in Florence, and at eventcenter.org. Nonprofit Children’s Repertory of Oregon Workshops’ (CROW) February fundraiser will once again be the talk of the town, as attendees sport their finest black and white attire, and can purchase handmade masquerade masks, created by a variety of local artists.
There will be live music by The Pop Rocks of Eugene, a wine spin to win, dessert dash and a silent auction. Two beer or wine tickets and hot appetizers are included with each ticket. You’d better mark your calendar now and plan to have a “ball” with us!
Proceeds support kids in the arts, so what could be better? The fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Three Rivers Casino Resort Showroom, 5647 Highway 126 in Florence, at 6:30 p.m. CROW is seeking artists to paint/ decorate masquerade masks for this exciting. Donated masks will be sold at the organization’s “2018 Black and White Ball,” and all funds will support youth scholarships, arts programming, educational materials and other vital expenses for CROW. Paper pulp mask bases will be provided, but artists may use whatever base they wish, and whatever medium they wish. Masks must be all black or white, with only silver
or gold for accents. CROW Artistic Director Melanie Heard encourages artists to “Be creative, be whimsical, be wild and have lots of fun!” Artists will receive recognition at the event, and a discounted event ticket price for themselves and a guest. All masks must be completed and returned by Jan. 30. Earlier submissions are appreciated. For an information sheet and to receive a mask base, visit Florence Regional Arts Alliance Art Center, 120 Maple St., or Beaux Arts Fine Arts Supplies at 2285 Highway 101, Suite H. If you have questions, contact Melanie Heard at crowtheatrekids@yahoo.com.

FIBER ARTS FOCUS OF ‘HIGH FIBER DIET’ COOS ART MUSEUM, 235 ANDERSON AVE.
COOS BAY—Through Feb. 17, Coos Art Museum will be hosting a dual exhibition of fiber art by the group High Fiber Diet. The two exhibitions brought together into one are “Heat Wave” and “It’s Not Easy Being Green.” High Fiber Diet is a group of more than 30 artists located in southwestern Washington and western Oregon who choose to work with fiber to express their interpretation of the world and themselves. Each exhibition is organized around a particular color that must appear within the design of the fiber art piece. For “Heat Wave” it is orange. Orange is the color of heat: hot passion, hot jazz, desert heat, tropical heat, the warmth of Mediterranean stone walls or bright flow-

ers. We are basking in the glow. Jurors are Wendy Huhn, Barbara Setsu Pickett and Marilyn Robert. For “It’s Not Easy Being Green,” as a famous frog once sang, the color is green. Kermit’s identity struggle reflects the challenges and choices we face every day. The jurors are Pat Bognar, Trisha
Hassler and Bonnie Meltzer. Coos Art Museum Staff Art Show, a selection works produced by directors, staff and volunteers of CAM, will show for the same period in the Mabel Hansen Gallery. “Viewing Organically: Jean Kyle” and “The Nature of the Gourd: Sunny Kudo,”
will be an exhibition of watercolors and painted gourds by the co-winners of last year’s CAM Biennial, Jean Kyle and Sunny Kudo. This will be in the Uno Richter Atrium Gallery. An exhibition organized by the South Coast Woodworkers highlights local talent and feature many pieces of fine furniture and turned wood in the Clare Wehrle Community Gallery.

Florence named among top 10 finalists for TV series The City of Florence has been selected as one of the top 10 towns nationwide to possibly be featured in Season 3 of “Small Business Revolution — Main Street.” This is an online series that focuses on transforming downtowns and is streamed online and on Hulu. If selected, Florence would be awarded $500,000 for a downtown makeover and be featured in an eight-part series on www.smallbusinessrevolution.org. Chairwoman of the Downtown Revitalization Team, Ellen Huntingdon of Oregon Pacific Bank, submitted an application for the series last fall. “I am very proud that Florence has made it to the top 10 out of thousands of applicants,” said Huntingdon. On Sept. 28, Deluxe launched the second season of Small Business Revolution – Main Street, featuring the community of Bristol Borough, Pennsylvania and six businesses selected to receive the $500,000 makeover. The series, which airs on www.smallbusinessrevolution.org, Hulu and YouTube, features marketing and business expertise for small businesses in one small town. Host Amanda Brinkman, Deluxe’s chief brand and communications officer, along with a host of marketing experts from Deluxe, help struggling business owners find their path to success. On Jan. 3, Deluxe Corporation will send representatives to visit Florence, spending roughly two days. There will be a reception that day from 5 to 7 p.m. at Florence Events Center for interested parties and stakeholders. After the visits to each of the Top 10 towns, Deluxe Corporation will determine which towns will be eligible for final national voting in February 2018. “There are so many deserving towns that need this boost,” Brinkman said. “Our team decided to announce 10 deserving communities so we can do a deeper dive into their structure and their needs before moving on to the next round. No matter what, each of these 10 would make a great winner for our contest.” For more information, contact Huntingdon at ellen.huntingdon@opbc. com or call 541-902-1509.

CROW announces open auditions for April’s ‘Tarzan’
C
hildren’s Repertory of Oregon Workshops (CROW) will hold open auditions for Disney’s “Tarzan the Musical” on Jan. 8 and 9 at 6:30 p.m. with invited callbacks on Jan. 10. Participants may attend either day of the auditions. It is not necessary to come to both days. Callbacks are by invitation only. Auditions will be at the CROW Center for the Performing Arts, 3120 Highway 101 in Florence. The show’s performances will be two outreach shows on April 12 and regular shows April 13, 14 and 15. Rehearsals begin Jan. 22 and are generally Monday to Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9 p.m. However, not all kids are called to every rehearsal. Cast members receive a schedule on the first day of rehearsal, and are expected to make this show their top priority. Participants are asked to bring:
-Short Song (16-32 Bars Sheet Music or about 1 minute with a background track). This may be on an ipod/MP3 player. Make sure the song is short and shows off your vocal range. If you sing with a track, please make sure that there are NO vocals in the background. In addition, — i.e. “Karaoke” track is OK, but do NOT sing with the artist. We prefer that you do NOT sing a capella (without any music). -Headshot/Resume (if you have one) -Clothes/shoes you can easily move in -Water in a closed container with a tightly fitting lid. Participants aged 4 to 22+ are encouraged to audition. Main cast will be for students aged 6 and up, but “telegrammers” can be 4 to 7. There is no charge to participate in the show, and no previous experience is required to audition. “Please don't be scared!” said CROW
Artistic Director Melanie Heard. “Come give us a try!” Short synopsis: Washed up on the shores of West Africa, an infant boy is taken in and raised by gorillas who name him Tarzan. Apart from striving for acceptance from his ape father, Tarzan's life is mostly monkey business until a human expedition treks into his tribe's territory, and he encounters creatures like himself for the first time. Tarzan struggles to navigate a jungle, thick with emotion, as he discovers his animal upbringing clashing with his human instincts. The musical is based on the Disney cartoon by the same name. Characters include several lead roles and a menagerie of creatures for the cast. CROW has a variety of audition tips on its website at crowkids.com. For more information, email crowtheatre kids@yahoo.com or text 541-999-8641.
