34th annual Charleston Crab Feed dishes up Dungeness crab

“C

rack up” fresh Oregon Dungeness Crab from Charleston at the North Bend Community Center on Saturday, Feb. 10. The Charleston fishing village is bringing Oregon’s fresh Dungeness crab harvest to YOU at the 34th Annual Charleston Merchants Crab Feed this year. The event will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the North Bend Community Center, 2222 Broadway Ave. in North Bend, Ore. This is the main fundraising event for the Charleston Visitors Center, but also provides funding to other needs in the Charleston community. “This is one of the community’s favorite festivals. It gives locals and visitors a chance to meet with old friends and make new ones, while cracking tasty Oregon Dungeness crab,” said Harbormaster John Buckley. “Our Dungeness crab fishery is certified sustainable, and all of the large meaty crab the volunteers serve at the festival is caught by our very own Charleston fishermen.” Volunteers will serve whole or half fresh crab dinners with side dishes, rolls and a beverage. Whole crab dinners are $20 and half crab

dinners at $16, but prices are subject to the markets. Make sure to leave room for dessert as pies and cakes will be available for sale by the Ladies Garden Club for $1 per slice. Beer and wine will be available and served by the Charleston’s Miller’s Sports Bar & Grill. There will also be crab bibs, vendor coupons and prize drawings during the festival. Make a weekend of it! Head out to Charleston and learn about marine life at the Charleston Marine Life Center, go crabbing off the docks at the Charleston Marina Shore, stormwatch at Shore Acres, Sunset Bay and Cape Arago State Parks, and hike the trails at South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. All are popular recreation spots just minutes away! Local Key Club students and Chamber Ambassadors, along with other volunteers, will be serving and making your Dungeness crab dinner a great and fun experience. “The returning star of the annual festival is fresh, certifiably delicious Oregon Dungeness crab,” said Wild Woman Mel Campbell. “Don’t miss it!”

About nine years ago I had to have several middle ear surgeries. A hearing loss was the main side effect from the whole ordeal. I appreciated what the doctors and audiologists had done for me, and asked how I could work in their field. After two years of study and internship, I got my specialists license and independently began helping people with hearing difficulties. Now “hearing loss” and “hearing aids” are a personal issue for me. I know what it’s like to “have to” wear them, and also how cool it is to hear better. A while back, when taking the dog outside before going to bed, I was listening to the frogs croaking in the marsh about 250 yards from our house. As I clicked the battery doors open on my hearing aids the frogs all became silent . I clicked the doors shut again, and when the little tune beeped in the aids, the frogs must have heard it, because they all started croaking again! I related this experience to my wife, and can’t believe she doubts the frogs astute hearing abilities ! Why do I fit several different brands of hearing aids? Every company says they are the best, but they may not be the best for your ears and situation. Some of us have tinnitus, some have a high frequency loss, some lead a busy life, others are home bodies. If you want “InTheEar” style we order from a company that has a reputation of making custom aids promptly, that fit perfectly the first time. We are your advocates working for you, to get you the best solution for your unique ears and situation.

Showcase goes back to the roots with Martha Redbone

W

elcome Martha Redbone to the Oregon coast on Sunday, March 4, at Bandon Showcase, located at Sprague Community Theater, 1202 11th St. SW. Redbone is one of the most vital voices in American Roots music. A multi award-winning musician, the charismatic songstress is celebrated for her tasty gumbo of roots music embodying the folk and country sounds of her childhood in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky mixed with the eclectic grit of her teenage years in pre-gentrified Brooklyn.

8 • COAST CENTRAL • Arts & Entertainment • FEBRUARY 2018

With her gospel singing father’s voice and the spirit of her Cherokee/Choctaw mother’s culture, Redbone broadens the boundaries of Americana. Her latest CD, “The Garden of Love — Songs of William Blake,” produced by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founder/Grammy Winner John McEuen, is an unexpected twist – “a brilliant collision of cultures” (New Yorker). Redbone’s magnificent voice, Blake’s immortal words and a masterful cornucopia of roots music, folk, country, Piedmont blues, gospel, bluegrass, soul and traditional Native, make this

an unforgettable album. Visit martharedbone.com for more information. In Bandon, tickets to see Redbone are $25, or $125 for season tickets to the Bandon Showcase. Purchase advance tickets using cash, check or credit card by emailing info@bandonshowcase.org for details, or contacting Bandon Mercantile, 535 Second St SE, at 541-3474341. This year’s event, which will feature two days of jazz, art and wine, will be highlighted by talented jazz musicians and outstanding wine from some of the best wineries throughout the state. Selection for the exhibit will be made by Margaret Prentice, who is an accomplished painter and printmaker and has curated numerous exhibitions throughout the Northwest. Museum focuses on fiber arts

COOS BAY—Through Feb. 17, Coos Art Museum will be hosting a dual exhibition of fiber art by the group High Fiber Diet. The two exhibitions brought together into one are “Heat Wave” and “It’s Not Easy Being Green.” High Fiber Diet is a group of more than 30 artists located in southwestern Washington and western Oregon who choose to work with fiber to express their interpretation of the world and themselves. Each exhibition is organized around a particular color that must appear within the design of the fiber art piece. For “Heat Wave” it is orange. Orange is the color of heat: hot passion, hot jazz, desert heat, tropical heat, the warmth of Mediterranean stone walls or bright flowers. We are basking in the glow. Jurors are Wendy Huhn, Barbara Setsu Pickett and Marilyn Robert. For “It’s Not Easy Being Green,” as a famous frog once sang, the color is green. Kermit’s identity struggle reflects the challenges and choices we face every day. The jurors are Pat Bognar, Trisha Hassler and Bonnie Meltzer. Coos Art Museum Staff Art Show, a selection works produced by directors, staff and volunteers of CAM, will show for the same period in the Mabel Hansen Gallery. “Viewing Organically: Jean Kyle” and “The Nature of the Gourd: Sunny Kudo,” will be an exhibition of watercolors and painted gourds by the co-winners of last year’s CAM Biennial, Jean Kyle and Sunny Kudo. This will be in the Uno Richter Atrium Gallery. An exhibition organized by the South Coast Woodworkers highlights local talent and feature many pieces of fine furniture and turned wood in the Clare Wehrle Community Gallery.
