‘Tarzan’ welcomes all to the jungle C ROW is excited to welcome you to the jungle, as it brings Disney’s “Tarzan the Musical” to life at the Florence Events Center on April 13, 14 and 15. Based on the 1999 animated Disney film, “Tarzan” promises to be an actionpacked treat for the entire family. The story is familiar: Raised by gorillas, Tarzan’s (Cameron Utz) love for his ape family and the jungle home he’s always known is challenged by his new-found love of the beautiful Jane (Alizabeth Norton) and her strange, human ways. In addition to the highly-physical aspects of this poignant and moving show, audiences will also enjoy the music and lyrics by Phil Collins, including the beautiful “You’ll Be in My Heart” and high-energy “Trashin’ The Camp.” The stage musical is packed with a wide range of emotion, and provides moments of natural laughter, painful tears and love at first sight — which create wonderful opportunities for CROW’s young artists to push through acting boundaries. “Our primary purpose is to tell this believable, human story, and we don’t hide from the agony, hilarity and raw emotion it provides,” said CROW Artistic Director Melanie Heard. “Many people can relate to themes of abandonment, struggling to fit in, confusing, powerful love and discomfort in one’s own skin. ‘Tarzan’ takes viewers on a journey ‘from boy to man,’ and audiences will be happy to have been along for the ride.” The story is also told through the incredible score by Phil Collins, which CROW Musical Director Maree Beers was eager to dive into. Beers, who has been part of CROW’s core production team since day one, brings

a wealth of skills to her role, including significant vocal training and performance experience, which she shares with cast members. CROW’s production of ‘Tarzan’ will feature Revelers Aerial Works, based in Eugene, Ore., as guest performers, suspended high in the air on vine-like “silks.” The show is directed and choreographed by Melanie Heard, with assistant direction by Genevieve Meltzer and assistant musical direction by Jacob Molano. Cara Beere provides assistant choreography work. Costume

Mistress Polly Fleming has worked hard with a team of volunteers to create beautiful costumes for more than 65 cast members. Lighting design will be provided by Margaret McDiarmid, and sound design will be done by Chris Owens. The incredibly immersive jungle set was built by Christopher Heard, and scenic artist Karen MeChek Trujillo will once again work her artistry and magic. CROW has a strong reputation for attention to detail and high-quality technical theatre components, and “Tarzan” will be no exception. “Many, many volunteers make it possible for CROW to create this kind of stage magic, and we are so grateful to everyone who has helped us navigate this incredibly wonderful jungle,” Heard said. Wine, art, jazz festival returns with FlorenceFest

S

even national-caliber jazz acts will complement 12 Oregon wineries and an invitational juried art show and sale, to lure aficionados of discerning tastes to Florence, Ore., for FlorenceFest ‘18. The two-day event takes place at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St., from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 27, and noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 28. The stellar music line-up includes headliners the Tony Glausi Quartet on Friday and the George Colligan Quartet on Saturday. Both performers are highly-respected composer/arranger/collaborators on the national scene. Friday’s line-up begins at 2 p.m. and includes Bossa PDX and the Paula Byrne Quartet. Saturday’s shows start at noon and feature the Michael Anderson Trio, Bossanaire and the Gerry Rempel Jazz Syndicate. Wineries from throughout Oregon will include Hanson Vineyards, Cathedral Ridge Winery, J Scott Cellars, Sineann, Campbell Lane Winery, Lady Hill Winery, Noble Estate Vineyard and Winery, HV Cellars, Abbey Creek, Emerson Winery, Cardwell Hill Cellars and Troon Vineyard. Coast Radio KCST/KCFM in Florence is producing FlorenceFest ’18. “If you appreciate wine, art or jazz, you’re invited. Come enjoy,” said Jon Thompson, owner of Coast Radio. “Last year’s inaugural FlorenceFest was a great success. We hosted several hundred wine, art and jazz aficionados from throughout Oregon and the West Coast. The quality of the wine, art, food and music was critical to last year’s big success, and this year’s event is shaping up to be even

better.” The juried art show and sale will be conducted by Margaret Prentice, who has curated numerous exhibitions throughout the Northwest. She is currently a Professor Emeritus in the University of Oregon’s Art Department. Her work is featured in more than 55 public collections, the Getty Museum and leading university galleries. The show and sale will include 60-plus finalists out of more than 100 entries from Florence, Eugene, Portland, Ashland and nine other states as far away as the East Coast. The top-three best-in-show prizes range

from $250 to $1,000, with additional cash awards of $250 for best in 2-D, 3-D, photography and a People’s Choice award. The event is coordinated by the Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA). Thompson said that throughout the two days, a tapas-style menu will be available from a variety of providers. “Florence bills itself as ‘Oregon’s Coastal Playground,’ and this event at this venue is a great part of all the fun Florence has to offer. We want to fill the town with people who are into fine art, fine wine and international caliber jazz,” he added. Pre-event tickets are $20 for Friday, $25

MUSIC MATTERS IN MAY FOR FLOTONES

In selecting the theme “Music Matters” for their upcoming May concerts, the FloTones recognize that, to most folks, music does, in fact matter. Hearing “The Stars and Stripes Forever” may bring back memories of a long-forgotten 4th of July parade. Christmas carols tug at emotional heartstrings. A bouncy Broadway tune can evoke memories of a performance you attended. Now, researchers who study such things are piecing together just why

music matters and coming up with some important findings. In particular, educators are studying how music exposure in children significantly impacts everything from academic success to behavior. Information like this is a major reason why the FloTones are putting together the “Music Matters” fundraiser concerts to support the Siuslaw Schools music programs. Children of the Florence community deserve the best a music education

has to offer and the programs have been suffering from recent budget cutbacks. May 26 and 27 will bring together the FloTones, The CROW Kids and the Miles to Go Jazz Quintet for two hours of delightful music. Tickets are available now at the Florence Events Center Box Office, 715 Quince St., at $20 for adults and $10 for students. So if music and children matter to you, come out for some great music. You’ll be glad you did.

First Punk Rock Flea Market opens at the Egyptian April 19

So It Goes and Time Bomb proudly present the first annual Punk Rock Flea Market, featuring music by Playboy Manbaby and special guests Pigasus Trio and Free Sex (the band). This inaugural event will take place Thursday, April 19, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Egyptian Theatre, 229 S. Broadway in Coos Bay. Presented by So It Goes Coffeehouse and Time Bomb Clothing, profits from the event will benefit Head Start & ORCCA. The all-ages event features the amazing punk band Playboy Manbaby along with Pigasus Trio and Free Sex (the band). Entrance to hear these three killer bands is $3 and includes an array of unusual vendor tables inside the Egyptian. Vendors will be street and punk artists, awesome alternative clothing and food — and everything from tarot readers to live paintings. Artist Nicholas McCullough’s work will be onstage with local vendors in attendance as well, including Angry Gorilla Comics, Speez Tees, Stickle Acoustics and more. For more vendor information, email soitgoescoffee@gmail. com. Playboy Manbaby is a six-piece punk band from Phoenix, Ariz. The band consists of Robbie Pfeffer on vocals, Chris Hudson on bass, TJ Friga on guitar, David Cosme on trumpet, Chad Dennis on drums and Austin Rickert on sax. “Even if you’re a Sunday-morning blues lawyer who only appreciates ‘serious music,’ there’s no denying that Playboy Manbaby has been playing long enough to form a bona fide musical chemistry — one that would fit well onstage supporting (or blowing away) the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. The tune boasts a rhythm section that can effortlessly power through stop-start arrangements. Over this, the versatile guitar work of TJ Friga switches from heavily reverberated spastic freak-outs to melodic arpeggios in the breakdown—a bridge that also includes a short-but-sweet trumpet solo from David Cosme. Go ahead and check out Playboy Manbaby before Hugh Hefner’s lawyers make them change their name.” — Eric Shea

he Sprague Community Theater will be uniquely transformed this April as New Artists Productions brings Disney’s “The Lion King Jr.” to the stage with a cast of 30 young actors from the South Coast. These residents of Reedsport to Sixes and cities in between will invite their audiences to the African savanna to witness the birth of the young lion cub Simba and experience his growth throughout the play. Show dates at the Sprague Community Theater, located in Bandon City Park at 1202 11th St. SW, offer six performances which cover two weekends: April 13 to 15 and 20 to 22. Simba’s “Circle of Life” on the savanna is presented in a unique way – through music, dance, comedy and strong acting. The musical follows Simba’s adventures as he reluctantly prepares for his ultimate destiny to become king. The audience experiences his journey from Pride Rock, his escape to the jungle where he matures and realizes his responsibilities to his family and his pride, as well as his return to Pride Rock. The play features classic songs from the 1994 film, such as “Hakuna Matata” and the Academy Award winning “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.” The beauty of the music is that each cast group is highlighted to not only enhance the experience, but also enhance the importance of each cast grouping to life on the African savanna. The scope of the production of “The Lion King Jr.” was an enormous undertaking for New Artists families. “We knew the cast could handle anything — dialog, dance and musical lyrics in Swahili, Setswana, Zulu and Xhosa,” said Anita Almich, who co-founded the youth program with her husband Dan. “The construction of Pride Rock, transforming the stage to the Pridelands, and the costuming presented a challenge as we tried to keep everything loyal and authentic to the 1994 movie and the live Broadway version.” The music was not a challenge for the Almichs, however; as Megan Wood (Rafiki) volunteered to teach the cast the music and help choreograph some of the songs. She wanted to make sure that every song was learned and presented properly and with enthusiasm. “The magnificent scenery for Pride Rock, the Elephant Graveyard, the jungle and Scar’s Cave was influenced by the work of Bonnie Nixon and her daughter Sheila Langenberg. They have helped make this musical presentation like no other for New Artists,” said Almich. “Their imagination and ability to take a drawing from Dan and make it a visual reality was not only amazing, but so appreciated. The vibrant colors and unique staging easily display the hard work.”

In addition to working on her own, Nixon came to Saturday work parties and taught cast members painting techniques, papier-mâché, and prop making. The cast also put in extra efforts in creating scenery items and props to enhance the experience of the play. Beyond the scenery and costuming, the stage lighting will be a new experience for the cast and the audience. Special LED lighting fixtures were purchased to create unique moods. These lights will be used in conjunction with the lighting provided at the Sprague Theater. “One of the wonders of the young actors in the group is their versatility and their ability to multitask. We have several cast members who will play multiple roles throughout the production; it is so appreciated and such a joy to show the audience their abilities,” Almich added. The cast members presenting the play are male lions Elias DeAndrea (Mufasa), David Wyatt (Scar), Henry Wood (Cub Simba), Josiah Perkins (Young Simba) and Adam Wood (Adult Simba). The lioness members are Riley Smith (Sarabi), Olivia Schmidt (Sarafina), Alana Bridges (Young Nala and later a lioness), Emily Wilson (Reedsport, Adult Nala) and the rest of the pride of lionesses Jola Smith, Madison Chimenti and Sierra Hoskinson. His majesty’s major domo, Zazu, is played by Hannah Perkins while the comedic tag team of Pumbaa and Timon are played by Nathan Malamud and Natalie Jones respectively. The hyenas are played by Michael Wilson, Melody Wood, Abby Wilson and Stella Ryder. Their prey on the savanna are Zebras (Alden Johnston, Jack Sorensen), Giraffes (Adam Wood, Josiah Perkins), and Gazelles (Elli Schulz, Ella Stokes, Madison Chimenti and Abby Wilson). The pesky buzzards scavenging the desert are Rachel Eickhoff, Henry Wood and Jack Sorensen. Grass Persons swaying through the Pridelands are Fasika DeAndrea, Aja Holt, Maya Tulles, Rachel Eickhoff, Charity Johnston and Austin Martin. These characters also fill in for the Wildebeests who trample through the Pridelands and Gorge. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and $5 for students through age 12. They are available at three outlets: Bandon Ace Hardware in Radio Shack, Bandon Mercantile and Olivia’s Cottage. Tickets will also be available at the door before each show, or reserve by calling the Almichs at 541347-2517. Disney’s “The Lion King Jr.” will be presented at the Sprague Community Theater with show times at 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. For more information, call the Almichs at 541347-2517.
