FloTones show that ‘Music Matters’

D

oes music matter? Why yes — and for a lot longer than you might have imagined. Back in the fourth century BC, Plato, a guy you may have heard of, said “Music is the foundation of the soul and the heart of humanity. All other disciplines exist to serve music.” That guy was one smart dude. Fast forward about 24 centuries. Were his prizes, his honors and the public acclamation awarded him the thing that brought the greatest joy to one of the most illustrious scientists who ever lived? “I know that the most joy in my life has come to me from my violin,” said Albert Einstein. Take it from a pair of smart dudes: music matters! While the FloTones may not have the name recognition of Einstein or Plato, music matters to its members as well. They clearly experience the joy of music through their vocal jazz performances. And, wishing to share this with the coastal community, the FloTones are producing two performances of “Music Matters!” Saturday and Sunday, May 26 and 27, at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. The FloTones will be introducing new songs recently added to their repertoire, including “Misty” and “For All We Know,” and will include an audience favorite, Chuck Cassey’s arrangement of “The William Tell Overture.” Sharing the stage with the FloTones will be four CROW Kids, all recently on stage in the Children’s Repertory of Oregon production of “Tarzan.” The CROW Kids soloists include Alizabeth Norton, William Owens, Kristen Owens and Elyse Stewart. The selections they will be singing include “Someone Like You,” “Imagine,” “Wild Horses” and “A Million Dreams.” The second half of the shows will feature The Miles To Go Quintet, made up of percussionist and group founder Nate Kaplan, songstress Maree Beers, bass-

They have a regular gig in Blue Bills Sports Bar in the Three Rivers Casino Resort. Guest artists also include trumpet player Ron Green accompanying the FloTones and Nyah Vollmar with the Miles To Go Quintet. The program will support music education in the Siuslaw School District. Does music matter to Florence’s school age youngsters? Just listen to what two Siuslaw High School students say — “Music gives me a way to express myself in a positive and healthy way” and “Music matters to me because without it I would have never discovered my voice. It makes life fun and colorful.”

And it isn’t just the students. Band Director Chris Rowbotham added, “Being in a band is about time management, dedication to practice and working together as team — all great qualities to have to be successful at anything they want to do.” Echoing Plato, vocal choral director Bruce Morganti added his own perspective. “Music is important because it IS; it matters because it is an essential part of being human,” he said. Music Matters will be May 26 and 27 at the Florence Events Center. The Saturday performance is at 7 p.m. and the Sunday matinee will be at 3 p.m. Tickets, 20 for adults and $10 for students, are available now at the events center box office and online at eventcenter.org.

LRP invites the community to ‘A Nice Family Gathering’

J

udy Adams Kaplan selected A “Nice Family Gathering” by Phil Olson to present to the Last Resort Players Board of Directors in 2017. “‘A Nice Family Gathering’ is a story about a man who loved his wife so much, he almost told her,” the play’s description reads. “It’s Thanksgiving Day and the first family gathering at the Lundeen household since the patriarch died. At the gathering, Dad comes back as a ghost with a mission; to tell his wife he loved her, something he neglected to tell her while he was alive. After all, they were only married for 41 years. The problem is, she can’t hear or see him — and the trouble continues when Mom invites a date for dinner." Variety describes the script as “a pleasantly quirky tale” and defines the playwright as having “an understated, but exquisite, sense of humor.” The play is both funny and warm and set to open at the Florence Events Center on June 8. It will run two weekends with both evening and matinee performances. A play is like an elaborate dance, choreographed by the director, using actors to move around the stage with the musical notes of this dance being the words of the playwright himself. As director, Kaplan has been both directing and performing in productions of the Last Resort Players for the past 14 years. She, along with “Gathering’s” assistant director Victoria Seitzinger, also founded It’s About Time Productions, which specializes in comedy. Kaplan and Seitzinger envisioned “A Nice Family Gathering” as an opportunity to showcase the talents of the Last Resort Players. Beth Johnston has stepped up to take the role of stage manager for the play. As stage manager, she is responsible for timing, cues, curtains, set pieces, props, entrances, coordinating with lighting and sound and calls for “places” (notifying actors when to be at ready). Seitzinger is not only serving as assistant director, but she’s working her magic both in designing, building and painting the set. She is a talented graphic artist and has worked painting sets for productions for The Shedd and the Hult Center in Eugene. Most of the set construction work is done off-site at the LRP warehouse, donated by Arliss Ulman, and “loaded in” near the time of opening. Countless volunteer hours (hundreds, in fact) are spent on most sets providing stand-out backdrops that enhance and bring dimension to each performance. LRP has a prop room in the loft of the warehouse with oodles of props of shows past — from the 14 swords handcrafted for “Les Misérable” to a life-sized cow and everything in between. Toni Young is the Prop Manager of A Nice Family Gathering. She makes sure props are put on and removed from the stage when required and tracks down mislaid props to be kept on a table offstage.

Leah Goodwin, often directs and stage manages, and, in this production, she is handling lighting and sound. She will be directing LRP’s fall musical, Grey Gardens, this November. If the director is the chief executive officer, then the producer is the chief financial officer. “A Nice Family Gathering” is being produced by Paula Ziegelasch,” who first appeared in LRP’s production of “Chicago” and has found herself bestsuited to the business end of theater — raising income for the production and tracking expenses to stay on budget. Promoting a production through television, radio, newsprint, social media and spreading word of the attributes of the production, she serves as each show’s head cheer leader. LRP held auditions for “A Nice Family Gathering” in February and rehearsals began in March. The cast includes Dana Rodet, Linda Sherwood, Joe Mathews, Grant Harmon, Kristi Whittington, Sheri Susee, Chuck Knorr and Beth Johnston. Actors are currently rehearsing four nights a week to practice, hone, and polish their performances. They are expected to be “off book” — meaning their lines must be committed to memory, as quickly as possible. Then comes “tech week” where all the elements of set, props, sound, lighting and costumes come together. This is the intense week just prior to each show’s opening, which involves most days and long nights to finalize the many

details that go into a production. A final dress rehearsa the night before opening night is one last opportunity get the kinks out and be ready for the play to put its be face forward. The dedication and commitment to bring the best po sible performance to the stage is Last Resort Players’ si nature, making LRP one of the coast’s premier theat companies. That is exactly what they have been doin right for the last 25 years — and destined to continue fo the next 25! Bring the family to “A Nice Family Gathering” for feast of comedic proportions. Tickets are on sale now at the Florence Events Cent Box Office, 715 Quince St., online at eventcenter.org or b calling 541-997-1994.

Oregon Coast Military Museum expands hours

The Oregon Coast Military Museum is excited to announce that it is expanding its open days to five days each week, beginning at the start of May. “We’ve always wanted to be more accessible to the public and we have structured a schedule that allows us to do that,” said Chief of Staff Geoff Cannon. Previously, the museum was only open three days — Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The schedule is now expanding to Wednesday through Sunday, with the hours changing from noon until 4 p.m. Cannon added, “This allows visitors one additional week day and one additional weekend opportunity to visit us. With this change, we’re also recruiting additional volunteers who can now work shorter shifts rather than the previous six-hour shift.” Parties interested in volunteering can contact the Museum 541-902-5160. Oregon Coast Military Museum is located at 2145 Kingwood St. in Florence. To learn more, visit www. oregoncoastmilitarymuseum.com.

The Reunion Beatles – Fantasy Tribute is the rock and roll reunion of all time: the concert that never was. In this show, John, Paul, George & Ringo are back together and celebrating with a concert that features their most memorable songs and solo hits. Similar to the hit Broadway musical “Jersey Boys,” The Reunion Beatles – Fantasy Tribute weaves a story into a 90-minute performance. In the story, all of the Beatles members are alive and have decided to get back together again. Their reunion includes the beloved songs “My Sweet Lord,” “A Hard Day’s Night,” “Hey Jude,” “Revolution,” “Strawberry Fields Forever,” “Live & Let Die,” “Yesterday,” “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” “All You Need Is Love” and many more. Formed in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2010 by Got Live Entertainment, The Reunion Beatles have performed for delighted audiences of all ages around the world and have received critical acclaim for their musicianship and ability to “channel” the four individuals who made a massive impact in the 60’s and ever since. Got Live’s President, Wayne Coy, believes that the concept was long overdue. “I got tired of seeing the same old same old with tribute shows,” Coy said. “They’re good, but there’s a million of

them.” He continued, “As a huge Beatles fan myself, I felt there had to be another way to pay tribute to them. This show is decidedly different. Yes, John and George have passed on. But, what if they hadn’t? Would the Beatles have gotten back together again? And if they did, what would that concert have been like? This production answers that question. It is the concert we believe they would have done, filled with stories, laughter and of course, those incredible, timeless songs that are so well loved.” The show includes performers who have perfected the impersonations of the individuals they represent, including Nick Bold in the role of George Harrison. “We put you into a dream world,” Bold said. “What a fantastic thing it would be if it were true, so suspend your belief for a few hours. We hope we can make that happen.” The Reunion Beatles – Fantasy Tribute will be in Florence on Saturday, May 5, at 7 p.m. at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. Tickets are available from the box office, online at eventcenter.org or by calling 541-9971994.
