Maria Callas returns to the stage in Last Resort Players 'Master Class' June 9 to 18

L

ast Resort Players is bringing a true gem to the Florence Events Center this month. Maria Callas was an international opera star and diva of the mid-twentieth century. She was equal to royalty, singing on the stages of the most grand and prestigious theaters of the world including The Metropolitan Opera House aat Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, The Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Gardens and the richly appointed La Scala of Milan. She fought her way to the very top and battled to stay there. Maria’s relationship with Aristotle Onassis brought her to legendary status — especially when Ari — her longtime lover, left her to marry Jacqueline Kennedy. Although married to Jackie until his death in 1975, he returned to Maria Callas not long into his discordant marriage to Jackie. But, you’ll have to buy a ticket to see this performance of Maria, as interpreted by the fine playwright Terrence McNally in the multiple Tony award-winning play opening June 9 in Florence. McNally bases his play “Master Class”

Actor Patrick Rowley gets instruction from Mary Conley as the understudy for Maria Callas in Last Resort Players' “Master Class.” on the recordings of what were called “master classes” conducted by Maria by invitation of the Juilliard School in New York in the 1970s near the end of her career. Audiences in New York bought tickets to see her teach opera students. Maria Callas (as played by Florence’s Annie Schmidt) does not disappoint with her wit and wisdom and exceedingly sharp tongue. Directed by Leah Goodwin of “Les Miserables” and “Pirates of Penzance” fame,

tickets are now on sale for opening night, June 9; Saturday evening June 10; and a Sunday matinee on June 11. The play will conclude with three more performances the weekend June of 16 to 18. Evening performances will be at 7 p.m., and Sunday matinees will be at 2 p.m. For more information, visit lastresort players.weebly.com. TO YOUTH THEATER CAMP WITH

ow is the time to sign up for Children Repertory of Oregon Workshops (CROW) Summer Theater Camp sessions for youth ages 3-18+. Directed by Melanie Heard, Maree Beers, Genevieve Meltzer and other special guests, this is the seventh year that the nonprofit youth arts organization has been able to offer this exceptional summer educational program. This year’s first two-week camp is entitled “Song and Dance Camp” and will take place July 10 – 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This camp is perfect for young people who love to sing and dance and want to strengthen these skills. During these fun and fast-paced two weeks, campers will learn several song and dance routines from various genres. No experience is required. There will be a free showcase on July 21 at 3 p.m. Campers will also perform at this year’s Relay For Life event at the Florence Events Center on July 22. The second camp is entitled “What Dreams May Come: Act-

ing & Improv Camp” and will take place July 24 to Aug. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This camp will focus on the many facets of dreams — when you’re awake, asleep and everything in between. Participants will craft clever and crazy acting scenarios revolving around the theme of “dreams.” There will be a free showcase at 3 p.m. on the last day of camp for family and friends. Also offered is an invite-only Advanced Acting Camp (AAC) Aug. 7 to 20. CROW takes special pride in the work it does with teens and young adults. This year, organizers decided to shake things up. The AAC students will put together a comedic play in only 2 weeks, and then perform it for the public three times at the CROW Center for the Performing Arts. New this year will be a “Tiny Tot Camp,” which is a partnership between Wildflower Montessori and CROW and will feature arts, crafts, music, dance and more! Dates are Aug. 21 to 25. This camp is suitable for ages

CAM offers free admission to military personnel this summer

COOS BAY— In May, Coos Art Museum announced the launch of Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense and more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The program provides families an opportunity to enjoy the nation's cultural heritage and learn more about their community, especially after a military move.

A list of participating museums is available at arts.gov/bluestarmuseums. “The Blue Star Museums program is a great opportunity for the NEA to team up with local museums in every state in the nation to sup-

port our service members and their families,” said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. “It means a lot to offer these families access to high-quality, budget-friendly opportunities to spend time together.” Coos Art Museum has been a cultural focal point of Oregon’s scenic Southern Coast since 1966. It occupies an historic 1936 Art Deco US Federal Building in downtown Coos Bay. The Museum offers a wide range of arts activities including exhibitions, art classes and lectures. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

First Yachats Pride celebrates expression of love

Y

achats Pride runs the weekend of June 3 to 4 at the Yachats Commons Building. This LGBT Pride Festival features Cris Williamson in concert, Two Spirit Seminar, Gay Bingo Extravaganza, a Family Picnic and a Resource Fair. This event celebrates the free expression of gender, culture and sexual orientation of LGBT people and their allies by hosting fun and educational events that celebrate diversity and help to eradicate discrimination and violence based on gender, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Williamson will perform in the Commons Multi-Purpose room at 2 p.m. June 3. She is a pioneer in music, artistry, and activism. Decades before indie labels were the norm, and years before women had any real access to the industry, Williamson was busy changing the face of popular music. She was instrumental in the creation of Olivia Records in the 1970s and later formed her own label, Wolf Moon Records. Her music and voice became the soundtrack of a movement, and was the cornerstone of what would become known as “women’s music” — music created, performed, and marketed specifically to women. The Two Spirit Seminar will be held in the Yachats Commons Multi-Purpose Room at 4:15 p.m. In this introduction and discussion of Two-Spirit traditions, people will view a short video followed by a discussion led by two members from the Siletz Tribe. The discussion features Lisa Norton, Executive Director at My Sister’s Place in Newport,

Ore., and Robert Kentta, Siletz Tribal Cultural Resources Director and elected member of the Tribal Council of The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. “Two-Spirit” is a contemporary umbrella English-language term that refers to the historical and current First Nations people whose individual spirits were essentially a blend of female and male spirits, or whose gender identity did not match their biological sex. There will also be a MixedUp Mixer with hors d’oeuvres. Come with an appetite for this amazing mixer featuring the Drift Inn’s special tostada and wrap bar. Mingle with friends and strangers while seeing what LGBT means on the Central Oregon Coast. The Mixed-Up Mixer starts at 5:30 p.m. in the Commons Multi-Purpose Room! Eat, drink and be merry with us to honor and celebrate us, the LGBT and Allied community. Beer and wine will be available for purchase, and your ticket gets you one free drink (alcohol or non-alcoholic). Food and beverage service will continue into the Bingo Extravaganza and Revue. Doors open at 5:30. Tickets are $15 and include one free beverage (beer or wine). Bingo Extravaganza will be

held in the Yachats Commons Multi-Purpose room and is free. Games start at 7 p.m.. Come early for Happy Hour and a front row seat. This Extravaganza is hosted by the Fabulous Bunny Fu Fu. The Pride Family Picnic will be held in the Picnic Shelter behind the Commons starting at noon. There will be music and an open mic. The Yachats Pride steering committee was begun in September 2016 with a mission to start an annual Pride event in Yachats each June. Polly Plumb Productions and the Friends of Yachats Commons are sponsors of the event, with Polly Plumb acting as fiscal agent. Polly Plumb Productions is a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization founded in 2015 by Burgundy Featherkile and Linda Hetzler. PPP produces diverse, artistic, colorful, whimsical, musical, and intelligent arts and cultural programming that embraces and reflects the inclusive and eclectic nature of our Yachatian residents and visitors. Yachats Pride 2017 is funded through grants, sponsorships, individual donations, and in-kind services and products. To contact us, please email info@yachatspride.org or visit yachatspride.org.

WHIMSICAL WATERCOLORS AT THE STUDIOS FLORENCE—The Studios at Jayne Smoley Design will host the opening show for artist Charlene Wilson during the Second Saturday Gallery Tour on June 10 from 3 to 5 p.m. The Studios is at 1458 First St. in Historic Old Town Florence. Jayne Smoley, owner of The Studios, said, “This will be Wilson’s first public art show and we are very excited to have her here. After reconnecting with Charlene and getting to know her work, I knew that her watercolors would be a perfect fit at The Studios. I just love her Llamas and the way she uses bright colors to highlight their personalities!” Wilson, daughter of a career military man, grew up to see the world at an early age. Born in London, England delivered by Prince Charles’ doctor, Sir Edward Peel, she lived in Morocco, Mexico, and Washington, D.C., which proved to be the cultural/artistic melting pot experience of her early years. Charlene then traveled extensively throughout Europe in between attending university in North Carolina. Wilson followed her wanderlust in 1970 and traveled to Portland, Ore. She graduated from the University of Oregon, began teaching in 1972, moving to Florence in 1974 where she met and married Paul J. Wilson, an intelligent renaissance man and artist. In the early 1980s, Wilson organized and ran watercolor workshops for Kathryn Davis. She also attended workshops with Davis, Pauline Cox, and Robert E. Woods before setting her brushes down to raise a family and continue teaching elementary school. She retired from teaching in 2010 after a career as a Reading

Artist Charlene Wilson paints whimsical animal portraits with vibrant watercolors. Her work will be on display at The Studios at Jayne Smoley Design on First Street in Old Town. Specialist and teaching grades K through 6. As Charlene retired, she began a new life line dancing, gardening, reading and painting watercolor again. Her very first venture back into the arts was a watercolor journaling class with Jude Siegel at Sitka Art Center in Otis, Ore. Since then, she has continued to experiment with beautiful color and design, enjoying her journey back into the arts and she organizes local watercolor classes and workshops for her friend, Carole Hillsbery. When she paints, Wilson says, “I try to incorporate the emotion that I feel, whether I paint land-

scapes or portraits, using bright transparent color. That emotion transcends style.” Wilson has painted many commissions for friends and family of their animals, specializing in dogs and cats. She was recently accepted into the Watercolor Society of Oregon. “Along with Charlene’s work we will be showing resident artists Tamarah Philips and her oils, Gigi Lassan’s jewelry and acrylics and my kiln-formed glass,” Smoley said.

There will also be a special wine tasting event and music will be provided by Denny Weaver. For more information on The Studios, visit jaynesmoleydesign. com.

member of FRAA. Kristin Anderson says she fell in love with the color and creativity that comes with creating glass art. She has an Etsy store, and has sold work in Galleries, including FRAA, where she is President of the Board. She is also a member of Backstreet Gallery. Patti Williams, in addition to painting with watercolors and oils, creates jewelry which is “inspired by nature.” Her method of creating involves lampworking, which is a type of glasswork where a torch or lamp is primarily used to melt the glass. Once in a molten state, the glass is formed by blowing and shaping with tools and hand movements. Williams is a member and teacher at FRAA, and also serves on the Gallery Display Committee at the Florence Events Center.
