ave is an Air Force veteran, Viet Nam vet and served 15 years as a police officer, including positions as a Patrol Sergeant and Patrol Lieutenant. Recently retired, he worked for the United States Postal Service and was the Postmaster in Bandon, Oregon, for the past 10 years. On March 11, 2011, the Japanese earthquake sent the Oregon Coast a wake-up call in the form of a tsunami. No big deal, you say. But do you know that in the Port of Coos Bay, over a million dollars of damage was done in the boat basin, several million dollars damage occurred in the Brookings-Harbor boat basin. Furthermore a photographer was washed off the jetty in Crescent City, California, and drowned. People up and down the coast immediately stocked up on camping gear and some actually began prepping for “The Big One!” I decided to spread the word the best way he knew, writing a column for the local newspaper. That column is now published in nearly 30 newspapers all across the United States. He also authored a book, “Disaster Prep For The Rest Of Us,” available on Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble and other online booksellers. Currently Dave lives in the Myrtle Point area with his wife, Dee and two grandsons.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Keith Pollard is one of the newer volunteers here at the FEC. He wasted no time after signing up and jumped right in to helping with the operations crew. Keith is a vital part of this hard-working crew that changes out rooms after events, setting up and taking down tables, chairs, portable stages, dance floors, theatrical equipment, etc. Keith comes to us via London, England, where he lived for 33 years, and after living in California for 30 years. He landed in Florence two years ago. When not volunteering at the Florence Events Center, Keith enjoys

fishing, boating, target shooting and working in his yard. Keith says volunteering at the FEC keeps him involved with all the different things that go on here and he saves money on a gym membership. Kim’s Quirky Question: What would your super power be? — Flying

‘Wells, Wishes & Wicked Wrongdoers – or Ding, Dong, Dell, Who Threw Granny in the Well?’

F

rom the early 1800s until the 1920s, a kind of theater evolved that had never been seen before. It did not fit the classic definitions of either drama or comedy and some enterprising critic coined the word “melodrama” as a description of this new kind of theater — a perfect blend of music (melody) and drama. This kind of theater came about because people wanted something in their drama which demoted reality and naturalness. “Wells, Wishes, and Wicked Wrongdoers — or Ding, Dong, Dell, Who Threw Granny in the Well?” is a melodrama, which always has two names, hence the double title. It was written by Penny Dennis, who first produced it in 2004.

Sawdust Theatre, 120 N. Adams St. in Coquille, Ore., begins its 52nd theatre season show with a sing-along as a preshow event 15 minutes before curtain-time. Between each scene, there will be song-anddance teams performing songs from yore. On any given Saturday night (and most Fridays) in Coquille between Memorial Day and Labor Day, you can experience a trip down memory lane by attending the Sawdust Theatre. The performers refer to themselves as Sawdusters. An evening at the Sawdust Theatre is always a treat for the whole family. As you arrive for the evening’s performance, you will be greeted by glamorous CanCan Ladies and Dapper

Gents. They link their arms through yours and chat amiably with you as they escort you to your seat. While you are waiting for the start of the show, you will be treated to a dazzling display of piano pyrotechnics playing ragtime music. When the curtain rises, sit back, relax and enjoy the next two hours of escapism as you cheer the hero, boo the villain and tap your foot with the olio dancers. Sawdusters love audience participation.

As you leave the Sawdust Theatre, look again at what determination has created. The city of Coquille is very proud of this addition to the downtown core, as are the Sawdust Theatre Volunteers. The show is directed by Kendra Gray and Alex Goble. The olios are directed by Maureen March and Mickie Waddington. And it’s leading both of them out to sea, and towards insanity. But you know, with singing puppets. The show is what in a sensible universe would be impossible: a feature-length musical comedy adaptation of one of the least musical or comedic stories ever; H.P. The Oregon troupe of Puppeteers for Fears will make a special appearance as part of its West Coast summer tour, performing Saturday, July 7, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, July 8, at 7 p.m. at So It Goes Coffeehouse, 190 Central Ave. in Coos Bay. Seating is limited and tickets are $12. The show runs 90 minutes, with 12 original songs, a dozen original handand-rod puppets, and digitally projected multimedia sets. It is not for children. *Unless they’re awesome. For more information, call So It Goes Coffeehouse at 541-808-9333.
