24th Annual Maritime Art Exhibition Z. Z. WEI: PACIFIC NORTHWEST BACKROADS AT COOS ART MUSEUM

ZZ Wei, “Roadside”

COOS BAY – From July 14 through October 7, 2017 Coos Art Museum will feature the oil paintings of Seattle area artist Z. Z. Wei. Wei has exhibited in dozens of Galleries and his works are found in many international collections, yet this will be his first solo museum exhibition and the Coos Art Museum is very proud to host it. The exhibition opens on Friday, July 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. with a free public reception and all are invited to attend. Wei captures a unique expression of the essence of the Pacific Northwest landscape with large boldly painted forms and rich colors. Born in 1957 Beijing, his life was soon engulfed by the tumult of China’s Cultural Revolution. Art and painting helped Wei process the turmoil of this unstable period. He graduated from the Central Institute of Arts and Design in Beijing and turned his attention towards fiber arts and weaving. It was as a fiber artist that he first exhibited at the Chinese National Museum in Beijing, where his woven sculptural forms were among the very first modernist works

permitted. These works also caught the attention of Americans working in China and led to his participation in a 1989 cultural exchange. He never returned to China and has lived in the United States ever since. The rural landscape of America has transformed him as a person and an artist. It represents the beginning of a fresh lifestyle and art. Wei unites his art and life experiences in China with his perspectives inspired by traveling the backroads of America. His original and unique interpretation of the landscapes captures the characteristics and spirit of America that touches the hearts of a wide range of audiences from different cultures and background.

“The Stockwell: Pool of London” by Austin Dwyer On Saturday, July 8, Coos Art Museum opens its 24th Annual Maritime Art Exhibition in the first floor Maggie Karl Gallery. The juried exhibition displays maritimethemed artwork by major artists from across the United States and Canada. Seventy-two works by 42 of the nation’s leading maritime artists are featured. The works are in a variety of media, including, oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel and sculpture. The exhibition runs through September 23. It is sanctioned by American Society of Marine Artists, co-sponsored by the Oregon International Port of Coos Bay. CAM’s Annual Maritime Art Exhibition is the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA) regional competition for the entire western U.S. It is the oldest continuous Maritime art competition on the West Coast. include: June Carey of Orland, Calif.; Ivan Kelly of Toledo, Ore.; and Paul Daneker of Buckley, Wash. Steve Mayo of Bellingham, Wash., is the featured maritime artist and his paintings will be highlighted in the adjacent Perkins Gallery during the exhibition. Mayo’s art career began in 1970 and the consistent quality and historical accuracy of his paintings established him as a premier marine artist. On Friday, July 7, Mayo will give a free illustrated presentation at CAM at 4:30 p.m. describing new research into the appearance of HMS Discovery & Chatham. The Museum will host its annual maritime fundraising dinner beginning at 5 p.m., July 8. This exciting event features the popular silent art auction, beer and wine sales, and enjoyable camaraderie. Delicious food offerings will be catered by The Coach House Restaurant of Coos Bay. Auction artworks include pieces by participating 24th Annual Maritime Art Exhibition artists and local artists. A special facet of the auction is the sale of recently completed plein air maritime paintings. Tickets for the dinner and auction are $45 for Museum members and $50 for non-members. The tickets are available by calling CAM at 541-267-3901.

Backstreet Gallery During July, Backstreet Gallery, 1421 Bay St., is pleased to feature weaver and jewelry artist Meredith Draper and Susan Thomas, pastel artist. During the 2nd Saturday Gallery Tour the gallery honors them with a reception, featuring music, great food and original art. Draper joined the gallery 9 years ago and has played an important role in making the gallery what it is today. She presently serves as president. She has dusted off her loom and currently adds beautifully hand-woven scarves to her collection of vintage timepiece jewelry. Using pastels, Thomas shows a masterful touch that makes one pause and enjoy the exceptional beauty of her work and wonder if it might be painting. She works in soft pastels with bold strokes. Her creations show her special talent in use of vivid color in contrasting shades bathed in light. Her dramatic work definitely lights up a room. Join Backstreet at their reception or stop by the gallery this month to see the work of these talented artists. The Gallery Above The Silver Lining Boutique Artist extraordinaire Kyle Lind is the featured artist for the entire month of July. His mixed media art show will leave you filled with wonderment. KXCR Community radio features stories, songs

FLORENCE— KXCR Community Radio invites summer headliner Chris Chandler, American Storyteller, to the coast in July. Chandler is joined by several other summer events.

American Storyteller — July 11 Chris Chandler loves coming to Florence. If you haven’t caught one of his previous performances, you’re invited to check him out Tuesday, July 11, at 7 p.m. at Class Act Theatre, 509 Kingwood St. Peter Yarrow of Peter Paul and Mary says, “the spirit of Woody Guthrie lives in the heart of Chris Chandler.” Accompanied by guitar/keyboard talent John Elliott, Chandler paints provocative prose pictures of slices of American life caught under the microscope of his creative gaze. Beneath the entertaining surface of his hilarious monologues you’ll witness a deep respect for language, literature and democracy. Utah Phillips said, “He’s the best performance poet I’ve ever seen.” Volunteer powered KXCR is

especially grateful to Class Act Theatre for providing their performance stage. The lights will be dim and the coffee will be brewing for this 30-year veteran of the road. Tickets may be purchased online by going to www.catproductions. org and viewing the seating availability. Tickets will also be sold at the door during the hour before the show. Admission is $15. For more information visit www. chrischandler.org or call Stu Henderson at 541-997-2997. Silent auction offerings will be on display to benefit KXCR. Anne Feeney — July 5 Hell raising songstress Anne Feeney is on the road again. Her “Summer of Resistance” tour is underway spanning two months, 21 cities, 8 states and the District of Columbia and Florence is excited to be her host again. A front-line agitator for the past 40 years, Anne Feeney has put her powerful voice and wicked sense of humor in the service of the working class — trade unionist,

feminists, environmentalists, antiracism and media activists. Over the years “comforting the afflicted and afflicting,” she has managed to collect hundreds of songs — protest, traditional, Irish, bluegrass, country, pop and songs by talented contemporary songwriters and added them to her bottomless songbag. Among the many she’s written, Feeney’s “Have You Been to Jail for Justice?” caught the attention of Peter Paul and Mary, who made it a staple of their repertoire for their last ten years as a trio. In 2010 Feeney was diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer, which spread to her brain. The prognosis was grim. Her doctors say she has defied medical statistics — Feeney quips, “I’ve been defiant since I was a kid. This time it came in really handy.” Anne will be performing in the Bromley Room at the Siuslaw Public Library, 1460 Ninth St., Wednesday, July 5. The KXCR sponsored show starts at 7 p.m. No cover charge,

but donations will be gratefully accepted. This program is neither sponsored nor endorsed by the Siuslaw Public District.

Folksinging duo — July 14 Volunteer powered KXCR 90.7FM is pleased to welcome folksinging duo Amy Sue and Kindra back in the library’s Bromley Room, Friday, July 14, at 7 p.m. No cover charge, but donations will be gratefully accepted. When Amy Sue Berlin & Kindra Kinsey, a sweet pairing of young singer/songwriters from Austin TX visited Florence last summer, the audience in the Bromley Room of the Siuslaw Public Library got a glimpse of the next generation carrying on the folksong tradition. It’s not a secret that Austin’s music scene breeds talent and when the Oregon Country Fair opens its gates to a host of traveling troubadours, Florence benefits. This program is neither sponsored nor endorsed by the Siuslaw Public District.
