Community to ‘Boldly Go’ to 72nd Bandon Cranberry Festival

T

he annual Cranberry Festival is one of southwestern Oregon’s bestknown events. It pays tribute to the Bandon community’s No. 1 agricultural crop. Plan a fun-filled weekend Sept. 7, 8 and 9 with the 2018 festival theme of “Bog Trek: Boldly Go Where No Cranberry Has Gone Before.” The Bandon Cranberry Festival is a lively introduction to the community as well as a time-honored tradition for residents. The festival celebrates local cranberry farming with something for everyone — live music and performing arts, classic cars and farm equipment, sports, shopping, dining and contests. Events are staged in Old Town, the Port of Bandon waterfront, Sprague Community Theater, Bandon City Park, and Bandon High School. The festival is presented by the Bandon Chamber of Commerce. The festival kicks off Friday with the blessing of the cranberry harvest at a local cranberry bog at 9:30 a.m., followed by the traditional crowning of the queen at 7 p.m. in the Bandon Sprague Theater.

There is also an annual Food Fair, where locals submit their favorite cranberry dishes. The VFW Auxiliary holds a bake sale and bazaar on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and an “All You Can Eat Breakfast” on Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. The always-popular Festival Parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, and goes through the heart of Old Town af-

ter winding its way down Highway 101. People interested in taking part in the parade may phone 541-347-9616. The Cranberry Fun Festival, with food, games and craft booths, will be held in Old Town Saturday and Sunday, with live musical entertainment being offered both days. The Lions’ barbecue is served Saturday in City Park between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The Cranberry Bowl football game will be held on Saturday at the stadium at 5 p.m. There are a number of other activities planned for the big three-day weekend, including vendors on Saturday and Sunday and Cranberry Eating Contest and Corn Hole Contest. A complete brochure of Cranberry Festival events will be available at the visitor information center in Old Town, and can be obtained by calling 541-3479616. Get the full list of festival events at bandon.com/ cranberry-festival. Or, visit the Bandon Chamber & Visitors Center, open daily at 300 2nd St. SE, in Old Town Bandon.

‘Tango of the White Gardenia’

I

n celebration of its 10th season, Cascadia Concert Opera is excited to premiere and commission an original work by Ethan Gans-Morse and libretto by Tiziana DellaRovere. “Tango of the White Gardenia,” a compelling new chamber opera in English, weaves together humor, emotional depth, and timely messages through the riveting music and dance of Argentine Tango. Cascadia Concert Opera will perform the tango at the Florence Events Center on Friday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. At its core, it is a contemporary story told through a new kind of opera that offers fun winks and nods to the commedia dell’arte style of centuries past. This opera also features urgent themes for today’s audiences, such as how enduring love and staying true to one’s heart are more precious than winning external recognition, how the consequences of parents’ mistakes cast a shadow on their children’s lives, and how bullies are made, not born. Specifically, it reveals how parental abandonment of a child often creates emotional insecurity and a sense of not being worthy of love, and many times the absence of care-giving parents creates a compulsion to compete, seduce and win worldly recognition at any cost. All of this drama unfolds against the background of Argentine Tango, which permeates both the musical score and the choreography of the six dancers who mirror each of the singing characters. In this context, the tango becomes a metaphor for life and a perfect canvas for the expression of intense passion, deep connections, strident conflicts and powerful reconciliation — all in operatic proportions! Tickets are on sale now, $25 for adults and $12 for students.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Kay Law came to us from San Jose, Calif., where she lived for 30 years before moving to Florence in 1991. Kay started volunteering at the FEC in 2014 and has also volunteered her time at Peace Health Hospital for the past 19 years. You can see Kay’s smiling face every Friday at the information desk. Along with volunteering, Kay also enjoys watching football and is a long-time San Francisco 49er fan! She has quite an impressive memorabilia collection and has attended Super Bowls along with being a season ticket holder for many years. Kay enjoys ushering for the various events

held at the events center as it affords her the opportunity to attend performances she otherwise wouldn’t get to, but the thing she enjoys most about being a theater assistant at the FEC is the people she meets and the friends she has made. Kim’s Quirky Question: “Your house is on fire, you can take ONE thing what is it?” — Safe deposit box and my two cats. (O.K., we’ll let her take three!)

are founders of early-stage ventures with initial market traction and a hunger for growth. They do not need to have raised significant outside capital or become profitable yet. Brand new startups without any sales or a market-ready product may qualify if they have a balanced team and commitment to growing their company. The Coastal Pre-Accelerator is not the last step in a founder’s journey. However, after completing this program, each attendee will have been introduced to a supportive and thriving coastal entrepreneurial ecosystem. They will have made connections to peers, mentors and investors from the region, and they will have an open invitation to all RAIN programs as well as regular meetups and founders’ groups. For more information, visit oregonrain. org/coastal-pre-accelerator/ or contact Coastal Venture Catalyst David Youngentob at David@OregonRAIN.org.
