MOONSTRUCK: TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE I
Aug. 21 American eclipse visible first from Oregon Coast
f you were to stay in one place all your life, the chances of seeing a total solar eclipse would be quite slim. This fact is one aspect of why Aug. 21, 2017, will be a very special day in the history of Lincoln County. First contact will happen here, in our county. The eclipse chasers are coming and they want to be the first people to experience totality in the continental U.S. As coastal residents, we are fortunate to know why visitors from all walks of life are drawn to our beautiful community, especially in the summer. The Oregon Coast is a spectacular place. In all probability, if the weather cooperates, we will all be in for a special treat when sun’s shadow crosses our state. Increased tourism is part of our seasonal experience. It is our opportunity every year to experience a much needed boost in the economy. Locals are well aware that during peak summer months, going to our favorite restaurants may mean longer waits; and traveling throughout our county simply takes more time. We encourage everyone to take a few moments to review your plans for the event.
The eclipse begins at 9:04 a.m., with the total eclipse occurring at 10:15 a.m. Total darkness will last for 1 minute 58 seconds. The principles that apply to emergency preparation are much the same as they apply to mass gatherings, tsunamis, and other natural hazards. Preparation is about planning for the known and unknown. Coastal counties have worked with local cities, tribes, pub-

The eclipse represents both increased opportunity and challenges. As thousands of additional individuals and families arrive for a once in a lifetime celestial event, we encourage residents and visitors alike to be ready; to be patient; to be safe; and most of all, to enjoy this unique experience at the coast! During the days leading up to and during the eclipse event, we encourage people to read local newspapers and listen to local public radio stations as they, too, are committed to bringing you preparedness information and current information during the eclipse event. ‘Bountiful Harvest’ on display through October
COOS BAY – From now through Sept. 23, Coos Art Museum will feature paintings of Ashland, Ore., artist Betty LaDuke. LaDuke has a career stretching back more than 65 years as an active artist. In her most recent series, “Bountiful Harvest,” she celebrates Oregon’s agricultural bounty and the workers who help to produce it through their labor. The exhibition opens on Friday, July 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. with a free public reception. All are invited to attend.
Betty LaDuke, “Oregon Pear Harvest”
The works in Bountiful Harvest consist of shaped plywood painted in her characteristic bright and lively colors and depicting agricultural laborers. A resident of Ashland since 1964 when she took a job teaching job at Southern Oregon University, LaDuke has a long and distinguished record of exhibitions and honors. She has also been a world traveler where her encounters with the working people of many lands have reinforced a strong social conscience.
In 2010 she was invited to spend time with the men and women who harvest the orchards, vineyards and farms of southern Oregon. This series of paintings is the result of that experience. “LaDuke’s work is illustrative and documentary, political and spiritual. It is not art for art’s sake…” says the forward of Bountiful Harvest, From Land to Table, White Cloud Press, 2016 CAM is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Betty LaDuke, Tuesday through Friday, and 1 to 4 “Oregon Carrot Harvest” p.m. on Saturday.

2ND SATURDAY GALLERY TOUR EXPLORES THE ARTS Enjoy Florence’s 2nd Saturday Gallery Tour on, Saturday, Aug. 12, from 3 to 5 p.m. This self-guided tour inspires locals and visiting tourists alike and reinforces Florence as an ever-evolving arts destination. Enjoy great local art, interactions with fellow patrons and artists, receptions, refreshments, live entertainment and community. The tour begins at any of the participating locations. For more information, visit 2ndSaturdayGalleryTour.com. Backstreet Gallery Woodturner Russ Dixon and glass artist Jayne Smoley are featured at Backstreet Gallery, 1421 Bay St., for the month of August. A Backstreet member since 2008, Dixon’s custom pieces are executed in beautiful hard woods, smoothed to perfection by wet sanding then finished with oils or hand rubbed polyurethane. Among his pieces are bowls, lidded boxes, vases, jewelry, bullet cartridge pens and seam rippers, or for the young at heart, kaleidoscopes, tops or puzzles, including his “weird birds.” Some are actually boxes or even puzzles. One inspired his latest endeavor, a wonderful children’s book starring Donny, an unusual bird. Smoley has used her artistic talent working in many media, including textiles, which have influenced her work. Her technical know-how and experimentation merge with her creative abilities to produce one-of-a-kind fused glass art. Her gleaming glasswork blends geometric shapes, vibrant colors with unique style and designs. She uses the radiance of light in custom lighting, wall sconces and nightlights. Her dichroic pendants and earrings glow with elegance. Freestanding pieces such as her sailboats or garden decor also benefit from the strong effects of light wherever they are shown. Bowls, plates and her signature starfish round out her beautiful collection of fused glass pieces. Florence Events Center Gallery One The Florence Events Center, Gallery One, is pleased to exhibit the artworks of four members of the Yachats Art Guild through August. Participating artists are Claire Good, Carol Summers, Jowanna Gosselin and Nina Toepher. Founded in 2008, the Guild is open to fine artists from the Central Oregon Coast. Membership has varied between 18 and 32 artists, working in watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastel, colored pencil, pen and ink, photography and woodworking. Claire Good is an accomplished, award-winning artist who uses oil, acrylic and watercolor in her paintings, and enjoys painting coastal

Artists, including (from left) Carol Summers, Jayne Smoley and Carole Hilsbery, will be on display throughout August. Attend receptions on Aug. 12 from 3-5 p.m. scenes, landscapes, flowers, animals, birds, people and medieval villages she has visited. Carol Summers is a retired court reporter, moving to Yachats in 2003. In 2005, she added watercolor to her repertoire, studying in Florence with Susan Weathers. She has been juried into many shows, and has won several awards, including an Award of Achievement from the Watercolor Society of Oregon. Jowanna Gosselin is an author, designer and teacher from Florence. She has painted in all mediums, and most recently felt fortunate to work with Judy Murphy painting on many of the dioramas at the Oregon Coast Military Museum. She has enjoyed learning the many challenges of watercolor from Susan Weathers. Nina Toepher started painting in her mid-fifties. Moving to Yachats in 1989, she “found the joy and creativity of watercolor, studying with outstanding teachers.” She has received several awards, including Best of Show and Best of Class in watercolor and acrylics at the Oregon State Fair and the Lincoln County Fair. The Studios at Jayne Smoley Designs Carole Hillsbery displays her acrylic abstracts at The Studios in August. This is the first ever acrylic abstract art show for Carole Hillsbery. Perhaps you are familiar with her watercolor paintings, as she has painted and shown transparent watercolor for all of her painting career. This summer’s work has taken her in a new direction. Eager to explore new ways of laying down paint, using texure and design, Hillsbery has jumped into the painting of acrylics on canvas. Her show will feature several works showcasing her signature love for shapes and colors The Studios will also feature work from Siuslaw High School graduate and Rhody Days King of the Coast Benjamin Cahoon. Cahoon is having a busy summer traveling and teaching youth in pottery at Alissa Clark Clayworks, 180 Laurel St. in Florence. Coos Art Museum is running its 24th Annual Maritime Art Exhibition in the first floor Maggie Karl Gallery. The juried exhibition displays maritime-themed artwork by major artists from across the United States and Canada. Seventy-two works by 42 of the nation’s leading maritime artists are featured. The works are in a variety of media, including, oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel and sculpture. The exhibition runs through Sept. 23. It is sanctioned by American Society of Marine Artists, co-sponsored by the Oregon International Port of Coos Bay. CAM’s Annual Maritime Art Exhibition is the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA) regional competition for the entire western U.S. It is the oldest continuous Maritime art competition on the West Coast. The ASMA jurors include: June Carey of Orland, Calif.; Ivan Kelly of Toledo, Ore.; and Paul Daneker of Buckley, Wash. Steve Mayo of Bellingham, Wash., is the featured maritime artist and his paintings will be highlighted in the adjacent Perkins Gallery during the exhibition. Mayo’s art career began in 1970 and the consistent quality and historical accuracy of his paintings established him as a premier marine artist. CAM is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday. CAM is continuing its Blue Star Museum program, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense and more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The program provides families an opportunity to enjoy the nation’s cultural heritage and learn more about their community, especially after a military move. A list of participating museums is at arts.gov/blue starmuseums.
n October 2016, Florence Mayor Joe Henry and a group of community volunteers submitted an application for designation as a Coast Guard City to the U.S. Coast Guard on behalf of the City of Florence. On July 17, the city received notice from Rear Admiral David Throop, who serves as the Commander of the 13th Coast Guard District in Seattle, Wash., that the application was successful. The Coast Guard City designation is a special one that recognizes the relationship between a local Coast Guard station and the community they are located within. The City of Florence joins 23 other communities across the nation that have also earned this designation as a Coast Guard City. This milestone is especially significant to have received in 2017 as this year marks the 100-year anniversary that the Florence community has been served by the local US Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River. On Wednesday, Aug. 16, the City of Florence and the U.S. Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River will celebrate Florence’s

Z. Z. WEI: PACIFIC NORTHWEST BACKROADS AT COOS ART MUSEUM COOS BAY – Coos Art Museum is featuring the oil paintings of Seattle area artist Z. Z. Wei through Oct. 7. Wei has exhibited in dozens of Galleries and his works are found in many international collections, yet this will be his first solo museum exhibition and the Coos Art Museum is very proud to host it. Wei captures a unique expression of the essence of the Pacific Northwest landscape with large boldly painted forms and rich colors. Born in 1957 Beijing, his life was soon engulfed by the tumult of China’s Cultural Revolution. Art and painting helped Wei process the turmoil of this unstable period. He graduated from the Central Institute of Arts and Design in Beijing and turned his attention towards fiber arts and weaving. It was as a fiber artist that he first exhibited at the Chinese National Museum in Beijing, where his woven sculptural forms were among the very first modernist works permitted. These works also caught the attention of Americans working in China and led to his

The rural landscape of America has transformed him as a person and an artist. It represents the beginning of a fresh lifestyle and art. His original and unique interpretation of the landscapes captures the characteristics and spirit of America that touches the hearts of a wide range of audiences from different cultures and background.
