‘Grey Gardens’

Presented Nov. 1 to Dec. 2 by the Last Resort Players

“Grey Gardens is oozing with romance, ghosts and other things.” — Little Edie Bouvier Beale

T

he first week of November, the Last Resort Players is pleased to present “Grey Gardens, The Musical,” based on the documentary from the 1970s. “Grey Gardens” follows the precipitous decline of the wealthy and well connected Bouviers, an aunt and first cousin of Jackie Kennedy Onassis. From their heyday in their Long Island 28-room mansion in the 1940s to the squalor of a ruin overturn with 50 cats, “Grey Gardens” deals with a darkly comic mother and daughter duo who develop a psychological dependency which allows them no escape. Directing “Grey Gardens” was a long-time dream of Florence resident Leah Goodwin, who passed away in late July. Her vision is being

brought forth on the Florence Events Center’s flat floor, with the orchestra seated on the platform behind the actors. It will be directed by Jason Wood, with Rhianna Haines and Sheena Moore as co-music directors on a creative team that includes Chris Lewis, orchestra conductor, and Mary Morganti, rehearsal/performance pianist. “Grey Gardens” opens at the events center on Thursday, Nov. 1, and runs through Sunday, Nov. 4. Evening performances begin at 7 p.m. and the Sunday matinee is at 2 p.m.

B

andon Showcase presents the crosscultural music and mesmerizing vocals of Seffarine in concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 16, at the Sprague Community Theater, 1202 11th St. SW, Bandon. Seffarine is led by Moroccan singer Lamiae Naki and oud player/flamenco guitarist Nat Hulskamp. Joined on stage by several world-renowned instrumentalists, Seffarine’s repertoire is influenced by the music of widely varying cultures. The result is what Bass Player Magazine describes as a “gorgeous intersection of Spanish flamenco, Arabic and Andalusian music, Persian classical and (American) jazz.” The group’s international blend of sounds embraces and extends Naki’s rich heritage, which spans from Moorish Spain to the Sahara. Along with Manuel Gutierrez’s explosive flamenco footwork, the grooves of

acclaimed bassist Damian Erskine and the exotic instrumentation of Persian master multi-instrumentalist Bobak Salehi, their diverse backgrounds meld into an intoxicating and ear-caressing blend of ancient and modern sounds. Seffarine takes its name from the ancient metalworking square in Naki’s home city of Fes, Morocco. Her family is well known in the Seffarine as master metalworkers continuing the tradition today. The square dates back Seffarine, led by Moroccan to the ninth century and is famous for singer Lamiae Naki and oud the complex rhythms that can be heard player/flamenco guitarist from the blacksmiths’ hammers. Ken Lavigne’s Christmas Roadshow S

EAcoast Entertainment launches the holiday season with Ken Lavigne on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m. at the Florence Events Center. This concert will be the icing on the cake — or the star on the top of the tree — following the Mayor’s Tree Lighting Ceremony in Historic Old Town Florence at 5:30 p.m. The Ken Lavigne Christmas Musical Roadshow is an enchanting holiday musical tour through the golden age of radio. “I want this Christmas to feel like we’re shaking up the champagne bottle and popping the cork,” enthuses Lavigne. The desire to turn a concert into a celebration has evolved from the earliest days of his Christmas performances, when he had to do much of the production and promotion on his own. “I had to do a mental trick and say to myself, this is a party you’re throwing and

When you wish upon a star, what do you wish for?

you’re just inviting people to come and be part of the fun.” Lavigne started his shining solo career in 2008. As an all-around entertainer he invites the audience into his life with his luscious, silken voice. He has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York, toured across North America, released three CDs and worked with such musical luminaries as David Foster. He loves sharing his stories in the Christmas spirit, which is all about joy. Tickets are on sale now at the Florence Events Center Box Office or at Seacoastea. org. Tickets are $35 for adults and $10 for students under the age of 18. Plus, Lavigne will give a preconcert talk at 6:15 p.m. Seacoast Entertainment Association is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which has been bringing entertainment to the Oregon Coast since 1980.

The littlest elf, played by Zhade Beers, wishes that the star that fell from above could somehow be placed back up in the sky, where she thinks it belongs. The Keeper of the Stars, played by professional actress Tamara Szalewski, however, has some words of wisdom to help the little elf and her elf friends to learn a lesson about love and light within one’s own heart. Children’s Repertory of Oregon Workshops (CROW) invites the community to this year’s Holly Jolly Follies on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 and 2 at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. Can you help the littlest elf with her mission? This year’s poignant central theme was penned by local author, Rose Ellen Jacobson, and the show is directed by her daughter and CROW Artistic Director, Melanie Heard. “The sparkling stars of Florence shine incredibly brightly in this year’s show,” Heard said. “Come let us put you in the holiday mood!”

An army of incredible volunteers has already been collecting props, planning scenery, arranging music, working on special effects, preparing costumes and much more. A true variety show with performers of all ages, this year’s Follies features many new and wonderful surprises, including stellar vocal solos and duos, live instruments, comedic interludes, small and large group numbers and, of course, CROW’s Flight Dance Team, which will perform beautiful dance choreography. Florence’s own Marty Adams will tickle the ivories, along with his band of magnificent musicians. Rumor has it that the “Tutu Dads” will also be back and ready to electrify the audience. Come to the FEC in November & December, for the PostCard Art Exhibition & The BeauxArts Innovational Celebration

T

he “Wish You Were Here!” PostCard Art Exhibition opens at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St., on Nov. 1. Community members were invited to create postcard art using whatever medium they wished in a 4-inch by 6-inch format. All artistic abilities and age groups were encouraged to participate. The show runs November through December. Postcard art will be available for purchase at a varying price range. This is a unique opportunity to purchase incredible art from local artists at a great price point. Artists, family, friends, neighbors and community members are invited to attend an Artist Reception on Monday, Dec. 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. in Galleries 1 & 5 at the FEC. This event celebration coincides with the BeauxArts Invitational, and people are invited and encouraged to attend both events.

T

This event is sponsored by BeauxArts Fine Art Materials, located in the Coastal Fitness Plaza, 2285 Highway 101 Suite H, and the Florence Events Center Gallery Committee. Please contact Jo Beaudreau for more information at BeauxArtsFAM@ gmail.com or 541-9918213. The BeauxArts Innovational Celebration will be open the months of November and December 2018 at the Florence Events Center. This curated collection features a lifetime of works from local artist Wolfgang (Emil) Hofmann and invited community members in a celebration of arts, innovative techniques and amazing talent. During the combined Artist Reception on Dec. 3, there will be a short special presentation about Hofmann’s works and life. There was no theme to this invitational, just showcasing art and creativity.

Setting the Stage for ‘Grey Gardens’

A

small but determined group is hard at work building the sets and props for the Last Resort Players production of “Grey Gardens the Musical.” Karen Trujillo and her husband Leon have been literally behind the scenes designing, building and painting the background scenery for the play, which opens on Thursday, Nov. 1, at the Florence Events Center and runs through Sunday, Nov. 4. Karylynn Keppol, the props master, has created many of the props for the play. “Grey Gardens,” which is being presented as a tribute to the late Leah Goodwin, will be performed on the flat floor of the events center in concert style. When director Jason Wood made the choice to amend the style of the play to concert style, it allowed for many creative opportunities for the Trujillos and Keppol. David Lauria consulted on the construction of a false proscenium, which has been created by all three artists. Karen has worked for many years on the sets for both Last Resort Players and CROW and took on this challenge to honor her friend. Keppol, who also appears as one of the characters in the play, has used her skills and training as an illustrator to create many of the props used in the play. Tickets for “Grey Gardens” are $20 and may be purchased at the Florence Events Center box office, 715 Quince St., or online at www.eventcenter.org.

“A Christmas Story is a play in two acts, with adult Ralphie relaying his memories of a mid-America Christmas in 1938 as a child. Jean Shepherd wrote the original story and it was developed into a television movie by Turner Entertainment in 1983. Many remember the iconic leg lamp award and Ralph’s wish for a Red Ryder 200-shot Carbine Action Range Model Air Rifle that would inevitably “shoot your eye out, kid! Last Resort Players is producing the play under the direction of Jennifer Connor-Chaney with assistance from Cathy Dupont and other LRP members. It will play Dec. 14, 15 and 16 at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. For more info, visit www.lastresortplayers.com.
