It’s planning time, and Florence Food share is searching for artists to participate in its annual Empty Bowls fundraiser. The 26th annual event will be held the first weekend in December at the Florence Events Center. “If you’re not a potter making ceramic bowls, there is no need to worry; we accept artwork from artists who work in all mediums,” said Empty Bowls Committee member Desiree Clifton. “Food Share can also help with supplies and ceramic firing for artists, thanks to the generosity of community sponsors.” Every year, Empty Bowls presents hand-made bowls, various art pieces,
and extensive silent auction items to the public for purchase. All proceeds contribute to Florence Food Share’s mission to help alleviate hunger in Western Lane County. Local artists, volunteers, and the business community all work together to make this family friendly event successful. The Empty Bowls planning committee is making a call to community members who would like to participate by creating bowls, or by donating artwork or silent auction items. To participate, contact Kathy Shamey at 541-997-2663. For more info, visit florencefoodshare.org.
LRP selects Schmidt for lead in ‘Sweet Charity’ this fall
Last Resort Players will present “Sweet Charity” at Florence Events Center mainstage on Nov. 11, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19 and 20. Directed by Laura Merz and choreographed by Angela Palmer, the show stars Joanie Schmidt, local favorite, who has already begun the character study of the lead, Charity Hope Valentine, “a girl who wanted to be loved.” Charity is a taxi dancer, a dance partner-for-hire at a seedy dance hall, “The Fandango Ballroom,” in New York City during the early 1960s. Though the job may be decidedly undesirable, Charity’s hopeful romanticism and unfailing optimism lift her out of her circumstances and help her reach for a life beyond. In the past, she’s been strung along and hung out to dry by a series of bad relationships and lousier men. When she meets Oscar, a neurotic, shy actuary seemingly from another world, will she finally find true love? One of the most famous shows by legendary director/choreographer Bob Fosse and with a laugh-a-minute script by the incomparable Neil Simon, every audience is destined to fall in love with Charity’s limitless spirit as she lives life “hopefully ever after.” With music composed by Cy Coleman and lyrics by Dorothy Fields, “Sweet Charity” includes song hits such as “Hey, Big Spender,” “If My Friends

Could See Me Now” and “Rhythm of Life.” With a large and talented cast, full orchestra and grand staging, costumes and surprises, LRP once again will bring great entertainment to the big stage. For further “Sweet Charity” details, visit LRP at www.LastResortPlayers. com. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased at Florence Events Center, 541997-1994, or online at the FEC website, www.eventcenter.org. “Sweet Charity” is proudly sponsored by City Lights Cinemas, www.citylightscinemas.com.

Florence Farmers Market celebrates 5th anniversary
On Aug. 1, Mayor Joe Henry will recognize National Farmers Market Week in Florence, initiating the Florence Farmers Market’s fifth-year celebration. The event will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 9, beginning at 5 p.m. at the market (the corner of Bay and Kingwood streets) with cake, giveaways and live music by violinist Robbie Dee. A “Wildflower Seed Bomb” Fundraiser will occupy the Community Table, and the PeaceHealth RX program will host a special cooking demonstration using ingredients from the market. National Farmers Market Week is an annual celebration of farmers markets coordinated by the Farmers Market Coalition, a membership-based nonprofit organization that supports farmers markets nationwide through training, technical assistance and network-building. This year, the campaign is centered around the essential role that farmers market operators play in local food systems and in developing resilience in communities as hubs for local economies and connection. The Florence Farmers Market has been in planning since April 2017, and is a result of the community-led Local Foods
Initiative of the Siuslaw Vision. A dedicated group of volunteers have been meeting to develop this nonprofit market with a goal of increasing awareness and access to local foods for Siuslaw residents, and supporting regional farm and food businesses to promote overall community health. In the midst of a global pandemic, farmers markets — like all other small businesses — have innovated to continue operations for the farmers and communities that depend on them. Mary Shaw, a central initiator of the Florence market, said, “Being part of the Florence Farmers Market Team for these past five years has been an amazing journey. The community of Florence has enthusiastically embraced the various local farmers and food producers who contribute. It has grown into a vibrant weekly marketplace for everyone providing healthy, diverse food options. We look forward to building upon the existing market and continuing to support the community.”
The Community Table, funded by a grant from Lane County, has been instrumental in building awareness about the importance of locally grown food and providing an opportunity for locals to share their surplus. Although the growing season has had a late start this year, many local gardeners in and around Florence have already contributed an abundance of jams, greens, flowers and honey. The “Wildflower Seed Bomb” fundraiser at the table this year, will help generate additional financial support for the future. Thanks go out to those who continually participate in this program! “Farmers markets are abundant sources of food, connection and resilience in our communities across the country, but they don’t just happen on their own,” said Ben Feldman, Farmers Market Coalition executive director. “Behind the scenes of every successful farmers market is a dedicated person or team working to make the market thrive. Florence Festival of Books returns in September
It’s that time of year again — time to mark your calendar for the 11th Florence Festival of Books, which will take place Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Florence Events Center. Applications for authors and publishers wishing to participate open July 5. With a total of only 50 tables available, they may fill before the deadline of Sept. 6. Large and small publishers, fiction and non-fiction authors as well as those who write children’s books, poets and authors of many other genre are welcome to participate as long as they have a published book. The festival is a celebration of books, and, new this year, we are also including eBook authors. For participating authors and publishers, besides the chance to share
books with the public, it’s a great networking opportunity. And for potential authors, it’s a chance to discuss ideas and manuscripts with participating publishers. The fees are: $60 for a single 6-foot table, $75 for a single 8-foot table, $90 for a shared 8-foot table, and $100 for a group of three at an 8-foot table. There is no fee for authors under 18 years of age. Participants keep 100% of proceeds. All events are FREE to the public. New this year is the consolidation of all events to one day. No festival events on Friday; everything takes place on Saturday. This should make it easier for attendees, as well as participants, to attend the Panel Discussion, which is now scheduled from 9 to 10 a.m. before the book fair, and to attend the Keynote Address,
which will begin at 4:15 p.m. after the book fair. The Panel Discussion this year will be on how to turn your book into an eBook. Many authors have considered doing this, but just don’t know where to start. And the Keynote Speaker will be William (Bill) Sullivan, who is best known for his hiking books, but will be doing a slideshow on “D.B. Cooper and the Exploding Whale: Folk Heros of the Northwest.” And, yes, Bill Sullivan has written a book about D.B. Cooper. This should be an entertaining presentation. Applications will be available as of July 5 on the festival website, www.florencefestivalofbooks.org. For more information, contact the Florence Events Center at 541997-1994 or eventcenter. org.
