Start your engines for the the annual Rods ‘N’ Rhodies Invitational Car Show in and around Historic Old Town Florence on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 9 and 10.
Rods N Rhodies’ main event takes place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Bay Street. The event also includes a classic Saturday cruise in and around Old Town, raffles with lots of prizes and awards for theMusicexhibitors.from the 1950s to the ’70s will be provided throughout the weekend. On Saturday, Bay Street will be blocked to regular traffic beginning at 7 a.m. for exhibitors to enter at the west end at Kingwood. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. cars will be on display along both sides of the street, there will be themed music, and raffle tickets for sale with a different winner’s name drawn every half hour. The awards presentation begins at 4 p.m. with exhibitors vying for the Mer chant Award, Children’s Choice Award, Peoples’ Choice Award, and Best of Show Award. Though known primarily for the an nual September event, Rods N Rhodies became its own local volunteer-led non profit in 2018 with a renewed vision to provide automotive assistance to locals in need. This year’s event will be a bene fit for their mission and goals.
“At Rods N Rhodies, you know you’ll see some of the West Coast’s most gor geous, amazing, awe-inspiring hot rods all around town,” said organizer Gary Cargill. “Up to 125 of the west coast’s best high-end hot rods, rat rods, and custom cruisers from 1976 and earlier will be in town. Originally a com munity show, CROW (Chil dren’s Repertory of Oregon Workshops) has taken on the follies to continue the magic in Florence. For those in a holiday mood, open auditions for 2022 solo, duo and small group variety and special ty act slots will be held Saturday, Sept. 10, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the CROW Center for the Performing Arts (3120 Highway 101 in Florence). The Florence Events Center wants to invite the community to its first-ever Hol iday Bazaar, Nov. 19 and 20. The FEC is looking for artisan and craft vendors to sell their items throughout the duration of the event. Items must be orig inal/handcrafted work by the vendor. No commercial, political, or resale items. All work will go through a jury process upon receipt of application. Jury accep tance is based on the quality and unique ness of one’s work. The producers will also factor in quality and uniqueness of one’s work, as well as competing medium and similarity among price points. Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3. Spaces cost $85, with the option of a double space for $170. Once approved, payment will be due by Oct. 10. FRAA plans Coastal Plein Air Art & Wine Festival
The judge will be Barba ra Jaenicke, whose painting journey began in her teen years with a love of drawing. Not realizing that a career in fine art could be a possi bility, she steered her initial career choice toward adver tising/graphic design, receiv ing a bachelor of arts degree in 1986 from The College of New Jersey. After careers in advertising and marketing, she was able to turn her fo cus to fine art in 2002, pur suing it full steam ahead. Working in oil and pas tel, Jaenicke strives to cap ture light-filled landscapes in a painterly, impressionist style. She holds signature memberships in Oil Painters of America and American Impressionist Society, and has earned the distinctions of Master Pastelist in the Pastel Society of America and Eminent Pastelist in the International Association of PastelAlthoughSocieties.Jaenicke’s fin ished work typically is cre ated in the studio, a reg ular practice of plein air painting in all seasons has inetureabilityenhancedgreatlyhertocapthegenueffectsof the landscape in her paintings. Back in the studio, when she can slow down from chasing the light, she spends quite a bit of time planning out compositions that will best feature the vi sual concepts for each studio painting. Her studio work is a culmination of field stud ies, along with notes and reference photos collected in theBornfield.and raised in New Jersey, Jaenicke also lived in Georgia for many years un til she yearned for snow intofamily’spromptedmatter,scapeformountainsandherlandsubjectwhichhermoveBend,Ore.,2015.

He was born on April 9, 1953, and raised in Sa lem, Ore. His father, J. Wesley Sullivan, was the editor of the States man Journal newspaper and a lifelong advocate of wilderness conserva tion, which helped nur ture Bill’s interest in the outdoors.Sullivan attended Cornell University, where he graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in English. Sul livan then attended Heidelberg University, where he studied lin guistics for two years. When he returned from Heidelberg, Sullivan en rolled in the University of Oregon and earned a master’s in German lit erature in 1979. Today, Sullivan lives in Eugene, Ore., with his wife, Janell Sorensen. They spend their sum mers in a log cabin they built in an isolated area along the Siletz River in the Oregon Coast Range, where he does much of his writing. He hikes and travels for en joyment as well as for book research. He served as presi dent of the Lane (Coun ty) Library League and helped the Eugene Pub lic Library Foundation raise $18 million for a new library, which opened in 2002. He was also a member of the Oregon State Library Board from 2000 to 2008 and helped over see the Oregon State Li brary system. His numerous hiking guides include a fivebook “100 hikes” se ries. Today, he contin ues to travel throughout Oregon to keep his guidebooks current. Most of the items are recent donations, as many people had books piled up during the two-year period when the library was unable to accept donations.

Every year local artists donate handmade ceramic, wood and fused glass bowls to be sold at the Empty Bowls sale held the first weekend in December. The event ben efits Florence Food Share. For the past decade, Empty Bowls has featured the work of a local artist on the poster advertising the event. This art, creat ed especially for the event, provides the focal point for the poster and is then raffled off at the event for ex tra revenue for the nonprofit. In turn, the artist supplying the work, gets recognition in local and regional publica tions ... and a tax deduction, of“Wecourse.are looking for a work of art that expresses the mes sage of both the event and Florence Food Share — pro viding nutritious food to those in need,” said Empty Bowls Committee Member Desiree Clifton. “Because no one should go hungry.”
The Friends have already experimented with two popup book sales in July and earlier this month. These took place outside under cover of the library front porch and proved quite popular in the four hours they were open. With min imum advanced publicity and effort, the Friends were able to raise nearly $800. Memberships to the Friends of the Library may be purchased at the Labor Day Book Sale and will be valid through December 2023.
