AMENITIES AT HILLSIDE RETIREMENT COMMUNITY MAKE RESIDENTS OUT OF SKEPTICS
MCMINNVILLE—Before you consider dropping by Hillside retirement community in McMinnville, Ore., there’s something you should know. Once you visit, you’ll likely want to make it your new home. That’s exactly what happened to Joanne Walker. “My house was almost paid off, and so the truth is that I was taking a tour of Hillside to prove to myself that I wanted to stay in my own home,” said Joanne. “Instead, I ended up calling my daughter to tell her, ‘I’m selling my house to you and I’m moving to Hillside!’” She left behind the need to hire someone to tend to her yard, to help her clean the house and to make repairs. Now all these things are done for her at Hillside. At first, Joanne was worried about downsizing to an apartment of less than 700 square feet. But she recently hosted eleven guests, and easily seats six at her dining room table. However, you’ll rarely find her home as she’s a member of a writing club and community group, and attends a lecture series. Residents love Hillside’s 57-acre campus which includes apartments, cottages, walking trails, a fitness center, two fine-dining restaurants and a cozy bistro. Jim and Eileen Givens noticed these things right away after an epic search for the right place. Eileen said, “It feels like a neighborhood, not a retirement community. The main dining rooms are lively because people are excited to get together and they’re talking to each other, which is great.” Now they are in their 70s, but if the couple had known

how easy it would be to transition to this lifestyle from their sizable home, they might have done it earlier. “I think people ought to start looking at options sooner,” says Eileen. “We wanted to make the decision for ourselves about when and where to move, and not leave that burden to our kids.” And they wanted to make that jump when they were

young, healthy and active enough to take advantage of all that you can do at Hillside. There is also something else at Hillside that can be tough to find: peace of mind. Hillside is a Continuing Care Retirement Community where you pay an upfront entry fee and, in return, its Life Care* guarantee assures people will not outlive their means. Sales Director Deb Kelley explained, “It’s really preplanning for future long-term care as your needs evolve. When you move here, you are cared for — for life.” The campus is home to a Health Center where you’ll find Assisted Living, Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care and Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation. Hillside also offers Brookdale Home Health and Therapy Services onsite. Joanne said it was these resources that ultimately made Hillside tough to resist. “The clincher really was the continuing care,” she said. As Joanne and the Givens’ can attest, the best time to consider downsizing is when people are young enough to enjoy the incredibly active, engaged lifestyle that a community like Hillside offers. SENIOR HEALTH INSURANCE BENEFITS ASSISTANCE
Individuals who have Medicare in Oregon can call the Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance (SHIBA) program for free advocacy and counseling services. SHIBA is a federally funded, state-sponsored program that provides volunteer counseling to Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers. Some of the issues SHIBA volunteers help with include: • Prescription plans not covering certain medications. • Information on supplemental plans.
• Access to assistance with medication and medical expenses. • Insurance reimbursements. Enrollment runs Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. This is the only time Medicare beneficiaries can change their Medicare Advantage and Part D plans. After Dec. 7, beneficiaries have to wait another year to make changes. SHIBA is always recruiting new volunteers. Being a SHIBA volunteer is highly rewarding. If someone needs help with Medicare or is interested in volunteering, call 541-736-4421 and leave a message.

ROBY’S FURNITURE & APPLIANCE
FLORENCE—Even though many people try to maintain an active lifestyle and get regular exercise, the body still changes with age. Roby’s Furniture & Appliance and The Mattress Shoppe will be showcasing two different ways of helping people offset some of those changes at this week’s Boomer and Senior Expo with Tempurpedic mattresses on an adjustable bed and power lift chairs. Getting a good night’s sleep can go a long way towards preventing fatigue. Sleep gives a body the time it needs to repair itself overnight. If you wake up stiff and sore, or feeling more tired than you did the night before, it could mean that it’s time for a new mattress. Tempurpedic’s patented design can be coupled with a smooth and simple operating adjustable bed to help you get that
“better night’s sleep.” If you find yourself sitting in
an uncomfortable chair because it’s the only one in the house that doesn’t hurt when you stand up, you might think about a lift chair. It can help you stand up without putting strain on your back or knees. It can also help you maintain your balance as you rise, possibly preventing a devastating fall. Roby’s Furniture has a very large selection of manufacturers and models on display and will have several at the expo, where you’ll find brands like Ultra Comfort and Med-Lift, as well as Flexsteel and LaZBoy. Members of the Roby’s Sales
Team will have a comprehensive display of Tempurpedic beds and lift chairs so you can try them yourself. That same team will help you select just the right product and, with our “lowest price” and “take it back” guarantees, you’ll feel comfortable with your purchase. Roby’s also offers several ways to pay. If you special order and pay in advance, you will save 20 percent off your lift chair or adjustable base. Financing your Tempurpedic purchase can be paid over 60 months with deferred interest (credit approval required). Create your perfect home with furniture, appliances and mattresses that are just right! Roby’s Furniture & Appliance and the Mattress Shoppe is at 1870 Highway 101, or at www.robysfurniture.com.

The 2017 Senior Expo is proud to announce that we have included a booth this year designed to offer participants a chance to have their heirlooms, antiques and vintage jewelry evaluated. While they have special equipment for testing diamonds and gem stones, they are not licensed to perform actual appraisals.

Senior Connections
The Senior Connections Program of Senior and Disability Services works with adults aged 60 and older and family caregivers, at no charge, regardless of income. Senior Connections Area Coordinators and volunteers in six Lane County communities work to help older adults in their own homes and conduct initial assessments, referrals and ongoing facilitation of services for federal and state programs. Trained volunteers are the key to the Senior Connections Program’s success.
They can, however, based on their history of selling estate jewelry, provide people with fair retail market valuations. Florence Antiques buys, sells, and consigns pre-owned jewelry and vintage watches at its store at 494 Highway 101 and can provide people with information related to selling their own jewelry. People can bring their gem-quality jewelry to be cleaned (please note that emeralds, rubies, lapis, jade, tanzanite, tourmaline and turquoise cannot be steam cleaned due to their fragile nature).
There will be a token charge of $20 for each cleaning. Bassett and Bailey will also evaluate antique and vintage furniture that people can easily bring with them, such as small tables, clocks, mirrors, etc. Please, no over-sized pieces, though pictures of larger items can offer some indication of age and condition so feel free to bring them. Appointments can also be made for inhome or in-store valuations at a later date. See you at the Expo!

— MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT COMING SOON —
By Brian Price SHIBA Certified Volunteer If you are a current Medicare recipient, you should know that each fall you have the opportunity to make changes in your supplemental and/or Part D prescription drug coverage. There are three type of Medicare plans that can supplement original Medicare. All of these are offered by private companies. 1. Medicare Advantage plans (also known as Part C) are similar to group coverage you may have had as part of your employment. Most of these also include Part D prescription drug coverage. 2. Medicare Medigap Supplement plans provide additional financial coverage for Medicare costs. For prescription drug coverage you need a separate Part D prescription drug plan. 3. Part D prescription drug plans assist with the cost of prescriptions drugs. During this upcoming Open Enrollment Period from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, you can change Medicare Advantage plans to reduce costs and/or get better or different medical benefits. Or you can apply to change Medicare Medigap Supplement plans — either changing companies, or getting a different plan within the same company, or switching from a Medigap plan to a Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare Advantage plans can be purchased without a medical review — these companies cannot turn down a client for pre-existing conditions or for any other reason. A new Medigap policy, however, may require a medical re-
view (also known as underwriting), and these companies can refuse your application. To make changes in Medigap plans you should talk to a Medicare Supplemental Insurance broker. If you have a Part D prescription drug plan, or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage, you also have the opportunity during Open Enrollment to change policies to reduce your drug costs. If you take expensive, or even moderately expensive drugs it is an especially good idea to periodically compare policies that are available to you. There can be very significant differences in your costs (co-pays) between companies. And these insurance companies can change their policies regarding drug access, the drugs they cover (and don’t cover) and the co-pay amounts for each drug. The Open Enrollment Period is a good opportunity to compare policies and then make changes if it is in your best interest. Some people have saved thousands of dollars a year by making a change. If you are computer literate and feel comfortable with going through this process yourself, you can do research, compare plans and even enroll in Medicare Advantage and Part D drug plans at www.medicare.gov. But many people need help with this as it can be very complicated. You might not even know what kind of supplemental coverage you have — if any — or where to begin. There’s help for those of you who do not feel comfortable navigating this on your own. There is an organization in Lane County, and throughout the state, that provides free,
9
trained, counselors that can assist you in understanding Medicare; evaluating your needs, looking at options and helping you to decide what’s best for you. It’s called SHIBA (Senior Health Insurance Benefit Assistance) and the local number to call is 541-736-4421. Appointment slots fill up rapidly for Open Enrollment so call soon. You can also contact a Medicare Supplemental Insurance Broker in the area and they can assist in this process. If you are new to Medicare, have recently moved to the area, or lost Medicare supplemental or drug coverage for other reasons, you can get a new policy without waiting for open enrollment. Call SHIBA or a Medicare Supplemental Insurance Broker for assistance. If you are transitioning out of the Oregon Health Plan to Medicare — SHIBA can also help you with that at any time during the year. SHIBA schedules public talks periodically. If you’d like to take advantage of one of these, call our office to find out when and where these are taking place. The bottom line is you don’t have to go through any of this by yourself. Help is available from SHIBA volunteers. One additional note — Medicare will be sending out new Medicare cards to all beneficiaries starting in April 2018. Everyone will receive a new Medicare Beneficiary ID that is not based on your social security number. Make sure the Social Security Administration has your current address, otherwise you may not receive it. SHIBA is a nationwide organization that provides assistance to seniors in health insurance matters. There are more than 20 volunteers in Lane County.

The future of seniors in America
By Bill Olson Salvation Army Director of Gift Planning More than 40 million Americans are aged 65 or older. The percentage of seniors in the USA will grow to 20 percent by 2050. Seniors share two big concerns: 1. Fear of losing independence and ability to care for themselves. 2. Concern that their loved ones and others will be cared for properly. Individuals, while in good health and sound mind, can make advance decisions for sudden incapacity or end-of-life care. Healthcare providers may offer health care directive forms.

Are you ready for Open Enrollment?
13
Every year from October 15-December 7, people with Medicare have the opportunity to change their health and drug plans. Companies that offer Medicare programs make changes in rates, co-pays, deductibles, drug lists, and provisions each year. Consumers should receive information about the 2018 plans by October 1st in time to review them before Open Enrollment. Local SHIBA (Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance) counselors are gearing up for appointments to be held most Fridays during Open Enrollment in the computer lab at the Florence campus of Lane Community College. SHIBA counselors meet with individuals to personally assist with Medicare choices, problems, enrollments, and questions. As trained volunteers serving under the direction of the Center for Medicare Services, they offer free help and services.
To schedule an appointment call 547-736-4421.
