Designed to hang, the Down Under Pot allows your plants to grow from the bottom of the pot.

One of the design features of the Down Under Pot is an internal reservoir, at the base of the pot. The reservoir

catches water where the root system is developing, thus feeding the plant and providing the root system with a wall upon which to anchor. It’s a simple process to plant.

Start the normal way, with the pot full of “soil” and the plant at the top.

Allow the pot to remain in this “normal” position until you are satisfied that the plant is established. Then invert the pot and hang it using the wire, which is already fitted to the pot for the purpose.

The plant has established its root system and is now growing in the potting mix in the Down Under Pot. It is the design of the pot and the established root system of the plant that keep both the plant and the potting mix from falling out.

When the pot is in the initial position, sit it in a shallow container to keep the potting mix moist while the plant establishes. Once the pot has been inverted and is hanging in position, water and fertilize through the top of the pot.

Oregon Dunes Restoration Collaborative The Oregon Dunes Restoration Collaborative (ODRC) is a diverse partnership of key stakeholders and community members who care about the future of Oregon’s dunes. The group includes people and organizations who care about the ecology, plants, wildlife, recreation and tourism the dunes support.

The Oregon dunes ecosystem is a unique, dynamic landscape, where movement of the sand by wind is critical to maintaining native ecology and historic recreation opportunities. In the last several decades, nonnative invasive plants have been rapidly stabilizing the dunes, closing in much of the open sand and altering natural geological and ecological processes.

The general consensus, among recreation users, land managers, scientists and community members, is that action needs to be taken now to restore dunes function before they are entirely lost.

Rare plant communities and the threatened western snowy plover require open sand to survive, and it is the same open sand that brings many

thousands of visitors to the area each year for the range of unique recreation opportunities it provides.

The ODRC has developed a strategy for restoring the dunes, which identifies key restoration goals and priority areas based on a set of criteria jointly developed with the Siuslaw National Forest. The broad strategy covers the entire restoration area, from north of Florence to Coos Bay. The goals fo-

cus on restoring landscape-scale processes, restoring smaller sites that are especially important for different reasons and preserving those areas that retain some of the natural ecology.

A new book has been released, “Restoring Oregon’s Dunes: The bid to save a national treasure.” Developed as a coffee-table-style book, Restoring Oregon’s Dunes tells the story of the coastal dunes, their history, why

they’re disappearing and the partnership that has formed to try and save them. Along with the release of the book, the group has also launched a website, SaveOregonDunes.org, to promote public awareness and involvement in dunes restoration.

The roots of Roby’s Furniture & Appliance and The Mattress Shoppe began 63 years ago in Tillamook, Ore. But the tree really began to spread in 1995 when the third generation of the familyowned business began to get involved. Siuslaw Chapter of American Rhododendron Society The Siuslaw Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society welcomes you to "The City of Rhododendrons," Florence, Ore., located on the magnificent central Oregon coast. The region is home to some of the most beautiful rhododendrons in the world.

People might be interested in how to grow and maintain rhododendrons and azaleas. The Siuslaw Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society meets the third Tuesday of every month at the Presbyterian Church of the Siuslaw, 3996 Highway 101, Florence, OR 97439. Doors usually open at 6:30 p.m. and

the meeting starts at 7 p.m.

The evening’s activities are usually talks about rhododendrons and azaleas, their culture and care and companion plants. The Siuslaw Chapter is a very social and friendly group of couples and singles.

In addition, the chapter holds two flower shows a year to feature early and late blooms. It is the only chapter of 70 worldwide chapters that hosts two, twoday shows that are free to the public. The chapter initiated the “Search for the Native Macrophyllum” project, which is locating as many outstanding varieties as possible of the native rhododendron, the R. macrophyllum, along the Oregon coast. The chapter is taking cuttings and seeds from these plants and will plant them in Gallagher Park to help

preserve these natives.

Look for these early blooming spring flowers The arrival of spring is a welcome occurrence for many people. Budding flowers are among the harbingers of spring. Spring flowers can revitalize winter-weary people just when they need it most — and provide reassurance that brighter, warmer and longer hours of sunlight are just around the corner.

Cold-tolerant flowers are hardy enough to start blooming before the last frosts have dissipated.

Other flowers will begin to fill in as days warm a little bit more, according to Better Homes and Gardens. Home gardeners looking to warm up their gardens with early blooms can use these flowers in their early-season containers, window boxes and planting beds.

• Pansy: Pansies prefer cool weather, which can make them one of the best flowers to plant in early spring and late fall. Pan-

sies come in a variety of colors, so there’s bound to be an offering that will blend with any homeowners’ landscape design.

• Creeping phlox: Also known “moss phlox,” creeping phlox is a short ground-cover that is a herbaceous perennial. Phlox produces small, fragrant flowers in dense clusters, which can attract wildlife, such as butterflies, to their mats across the soil surface.

• Snowdrops: Snowdrops can peek out even when there is snow still on the ground — sometimes as early as January and February.

But their name is actually a reference to their appearance, as snowdrops have three white petals that hang down like drops dripping off the stem.

• Violets: These flowers are closely related to pansies and, as a result, prefer cool seasons. Violets are generally slightly smaller than

pansy blooms, but they can be just as beautiful. But as with pansies, violets will start to fade when the heat arrives.

• Crocus: Crocus plants are relatively small, only reaching three to six inches in height. However, their grass-like leaves are some of the first sprouts that can be seen among bulb and corm plantings.

Preferring full to partial sun, these gold, purple, lavender, white, or yellow flowers can be enjoyed during the earliest days of spring.

• Daffodil: Daffodil bulbs produce cheerful, yellow flowers in early spring. They’re one of the most recognizable flowers thanks to their familiar shape and fragrant aroma.

• Lenten rose: Hellebores, also called the Lenten rose or Christmas rose, can tolerate light frosts.
