Volunteers Making a Difference
F
lorence is home to dozens of organizations — and hundreds of individuals — that support the town and its citizens. Their accomplishments range from ensuring the welfare of children and their families, to beautifying the parks and beaches, to building a hospital, library and senior center, to protecting the planet. They make music, teach our children, feed the hungry, lift our spirits. Some of the service organizations and their volunteer corps have become traditions, institutions and major resources. Some work quietly “behind the lines,” perhaps touching just one life at a time; some stimulate, entertain and motivate with gala gatherings and fundraisers. All are making a difference. All deserve recognition and support. Please take a few minutes with the 2018 Giving Back, a Guide to Florence-Area Non-Profits, to get to know a few of the groups that are making Florence a healthy and diverse community, and consider how you might get involved. Perhaps you’ll find an opportunity of a lifetime, whether to give or receive. The Siuslaw News extends a sincere thanks to these organizations, their leaders, and, especially, their volunteers. —Siuslaw News Staff

Thank you to the Florence Businesses and community members who generously sponsor flags at $30.00 per flag, per year. Kiwanis members maintain and display those flags on most holidays and special events. To sponsor a flag go to www. florencekiwanis.org or call Gary Vawter at 541-997-3281.
Kiwanis host a fun filled hour of games, prizes and special “StormTrooper’s” appearances for children thru 5th grade immediately following the Rhody Jr. Parade. Most of us want to recycle as much as possible, which is good, but not if it causes us to recycle things that aren’t recyclable.
Recycling programs in Oregon are in a world of hurt right now, and this is largely due to all the garbage people are putting in their recycling bins hoping that someone, somewhere will make use of it. That’s not how it works. Not everything is recyclable. And this type of wishful recycling ruins recycling.
If in doubt, either find out or leave it out! Ask your collection service provider, or go to: www.lanecounty.org/commingledrecycling

GIVING BACK — FLORENCE-AREA NON-PROFIT GUIDE 2018 - 7
In 1920, a gathering of old friends met at the home of Mrs. Clara Haring in honor of her 66th birthday. A plan was made to perpetuate the memory of the men and women who laid the foundation for the cultural history of the Siuslaw region. The Siuslaw Pioneer Museum, ninety-eight years later, continues to offer a look into our river town’s past for residents and visitors to enjoy. In the early days the Siuslaw River was the primary means of travel for settlers for the entire area. The Museum’s collection takes visitors into the exciting adventurous moments in our regions history with the collection that tells stories of the people who logged, fished, farmed and provided goods to a growing community. You could spend just an hour or two at the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum or perhaps make a day of it and include a self guided Historic Walking Tour which begins at the museum and brings you by 21 different buildings & locations in the Old Town Florence area. The Museum’s Research Library has documentary information regarding our local history and pioneer families. An audio-visual presentation shows a brief history of Florence along with information on early shipwrecks. And don’t forget to explore the steam sawmill display. We always welcome new volunteers! Please contact Harry Zinn at amazinn2@ msn.com or 541-997-7884 during open hours. Museum Hours: February to April & October to December Tuesday through Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. --------------------------------------May 1st through September 30th Open 7 days a week 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. 278 Maple St in Florence, OR www.siuslawpioneermuseum.com

Florence Food Share is an emergency food box pantry serving a 270 square mile area in Western Lane County. We distribute over 50,000 pounds of food every month to an average of 1800 individuals. 30% of those we serve are under the age of 18, and 28% are seniors on a fixed income. Because of the large volume of food we distribute, we must constantly replenish our shelves. Our most needed items are: peanut butter, canned meat products (such as stew and chili), mac-ncheese, sugar, flour, coffee, and canned tomato products.
ReStore accepts gently used building materials, yard art, gardening supplies, tools, cabinets, hardware, lighting appliances and furniture. We even accept boats and trailers and can help you donate your old car through the Cars for Homes Program. Our inventory changes daily, so it is never the same. We also offer pick-up and delivery service. Your donation will help someone achieve the dream of homeownership!
