W

elcome to the 18th annual Relay For Life of Florence and the Central Coast! We are excited about this year’s event at our new venue, the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St., and look forward to seeing new and returning faces as we celebrate all we have accomplished and remember those we have lost in this fight against cancer. Remember, we walk as a symbol of our unwavering effort and hope to one day live in a world without cancer. One day we will never have to hear the three words that strike fear into the heart of everyone who has heard them: You Have Cancer. Each day, we gain more of the upper hand because of dedicated individuals like you, raising awareness and fund to help us in our fight to finish cancer once and for all. It has been my honor this year to work side by side with an amazingly dedicated event leadership team, our team captains, the team members, our donors, our sponsors and this entire community. This was my first year working with you, and I can clearly see that the true strength in our fight can be found in the impressive community spirit that is evident in Florence. You put Florence on the map year after year in this worldwide battle, and we are honored to stand by you. Thank you for making Florence and the world a better place, by fighting with us. We are so very proud of each of you. Amy Bickleman American Cancer Society Community Development Manager

Relay For Life Rules

About Relay For Life The American Cancer Society Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event to save lives from cancer. Uniting communities across the globe, we celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and take action for lifesaving change. Funds raised help the American Cancer Society provide free information and support for people facing the disease today, educate people about how to reduce their risk for cancer or detect it early when it’s the easiest to treat, and fund cancer research that will help protect future generations.

Relay ’round-the-clock — Entertainment

real mixed bag of entertainment will occur at this year’s Relay For Life, being held for the first time at the Florence Events Center (FEC). Kicking things off will be Children’s Repertory of Oregon Workshops (CROW), local kids doing songs they have just learned at this summer’s Song & Dance Camp with special performances by some of the leads from recent CROW productions at the FEC. Following CROW at 2 p.m. will be Florence’s favorite DJ, Dan Harkins, who will be doing karaoke and dance music. Dan can be heard on Thursdays and Saturdays at the Firehouse Restaurant on Bay Street in Old Town. Performing classic country music at 3:30 and again at 5 p.m. will be the Buck & A Quarter Band as they perform highlights from their hit shows, “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes?” and “Down A Classic Country Road.” The band is led by keyboardist/vocalist/arranger Marty Adams, KCFM disc jockey, who appears weekdays from 2 to 6 p.m. on 104.1 FM. Marty’s background includes studio work on numerous popular albums ranging from gospel to Tanya Tucker and Tower of Power, many years leading the house band at Three Rivers Casino Resort, and recent performances with Buck & A Quarter Band at Seven Feathers Casino. Joining Marty is vocalist/producer, Mike Jacobson, guitarist/vocalist Doug Bushwar, vocalist Denise Dee, vocalist Nancy Pearson, bassist/vocalist Earl Knight, and dependable drummer Bob Severy. Mike has performed for more than 50 years with a wide variety of artists including Henry Mancini, George Hamilton and even Jerry Lewis. Mike is also a frequent

performer in comedy murder mysteries for Poison Pen Players. Doug Bushwar has performed with country artists including the Maddox Brothers and Rose and Tanya Tucker. Earl Knight has also performed with numerous country artists including Merle Haggard. Denise Dee, a sultry country/jazz vocalist, has done a tremendous number of shows locally having appeared in “If I Didn’t Care: An Ink Spots tribute” and “Sentimental Journey,” as well as the two classic country shows mentioned above. Her version of Tammy Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man” brings down the house every time. Nancy Pearson is best known for her portrayal of the legendary Patsy Cline at the Florence Playhouse. Her renditions of Patsy’s songs are always right on the mark. The Buck & A Quarter Band changes to formal wear to perform their current “Rat Pack & All That” show at 6:30 p.m., featuring songs from the Great American Songbook. Joining Marty, Mike, Denise and Bob is trumpeter John Stone. John most recently performed in CROW's “Death By Dessert” at Three Rivers. He was also seen as a soloist in last year’s Holly Jolly Follies. Topping off the evening at 8 p.m. is the versatile Steven McVay Ingham, vocalist/guitarist/fiddler, with a variety of his self-penned compositions as well as some familiar cover songs such as Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer.” All in all, it is sure to be a day to remember. Seating is limited so be sure to arrive early to see all of these great local artists. All of the performers would like to thank the American Cancer Society for its neverending fight to cure this dread disease that has touched so many lives.
