Official Program of the 115th Rhododendron Festival ageantry, civic pride, fabulous flowers and festival fun will mark the 115th annual Florence Rhododendron Festival May 18 to 22. Rhody Days is Oregon’s second-longest running floral festival. Florence Area Chamber of Commerce CEO Bettina Hannigan says this year’s festival theme, “Back In Bloom,” highlights the return after a partial twoyear hiatus. “This town is ready to celebrate. Rhody Fest is the semi-official start to our tourism season.” This year’s festival gets underway Thursday, May 19, at noon with the Davis Shows Carnival at the Port of Siuslaw Boardwalk and the 6:30 p.m. coronation of Queen Rhododendra and the King of the Coast at

the Florence Events Center. The long weekend also features the annual Rhododendron Society Rhody Show, daily carnival games and rides, the 5K and 10K Rhody Run/ Walk; the Rods N Rhodies Classic Car Show and Shine; the Maple Street vendor fair in Old Town, a quilt show, junior parade, Pinewood Derby and Sunday’s grand floral parade at noon on Sunday, May 22. The Chamber, with its two-anda-half-paid staff and a massive team of volunteers, puts on the big event each year. The highlight will be the grand floral parade at noon on May 22. It begins at 27th Street and Highway 101 and travels about three miles

to and through Historic Old Town Florence. This year’s grand marshals are the Siuslaw Vikings state champion football team and girl’s and boy’s state champion cross country teams. For more than 60 years, Davis Shows Northwest has provided the Rhododendron Festival with safe, fun family carnival rides, games and food. The carnival opens Thursday, May 19, at noon. All-day unlimited carnival passes are $35 at the entry to the carnival. The annual Maple Street Vendor Fair, beginning at the corner of Bay and Maple Streets in Old Town, is expected to feature more than 30 vendors and exhibitors. The vendor fair will be Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday’s schedule is packed with fun for everyone. The 32nd annual 5K and 10K Rhody Run & Walk starts Saturday at 9 a.m. at the

There will be games with lots of prizes sponsored by the Florence Kiwanis Club at the end of the parade route at 27th and Oak Streets. The American Rhododendron Society’s Siuslaw chapter will again host the annual rhododendron and azalea show and plant sale at the Florence Events Center on Saturday and Sunday. The exhibition is open

10th annual Rhody Days Arts Fest

Late Rhododendron Flower Show The City of Rhododen- ence Events Center between with minimal damage is as

drons is living up to its name! Flowers are in abundance all over town and we are anxious to share them and proud to be a part of the annual Rhododendron Festival. Rhodies are resilient and should be at their best for the festival. The show is always open to everyone at no cost and we encourage the community to bring their beautiful trusses to the Flor-

7 and 9 a.m. Saturday, May 21. Members of the Siuslaw Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society will be on hand to assist in identification and placement of your prize-winning entrees. A few basic guidelines to follow: select a truss with the straightest stem and the most completely open flowers but not past their prime. A full collar of leaves

important as the flowers themselves. This is your chance to win a blue ribbon or even a great trophy. There will also be a plant sale during the show. This is your opportunity to find that special Rhody you’ve been looking for to add to your collection. If you have any questions, call Day Farrald at 541-5903161.

Come help us celebrate! It’s been 10 years since the “Art Fest” signs went up around the Florence Events Center for the Rhody Days Arts Festival in 2011, not counting a two-year time out for COVID. It has grown, with FRAA (Florence Regional Arts Alliance) gaining more new artists as well as revisiting old friends. Unique works of art and fine craftsmanship can be found at this year’s event, held Saturday, May 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, May 22, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Florence Events Center. Admission is free. Learn more at fraaoregon.org.

lorence is Back in Bloom with the 2022 Rhododendron Court Coronation, bringing the history and tradition of the Festival to modern times. The 115th Rhododendron Court of incredible young women and men have become a beloved legacy and will reign over the Rhododendron Festival parade and act as ambassadors for the entire festival weekend. The Junior Court consists of Siuslaw first-grade Princess Katelynn Riddle, second-grade Princess Myla Streck, third-grade Princess Chanel Chatham, fourth-grade Princess Giavanna Flosi and fifth-grade Princess Lily Lewis. The Senior Court is made up of 10 seniors from Mapleton and Siuslaw high schools. Princess Alexia Clark, Princess Haylee Cole, Princess Alex Fuller, Princess Cameron Kentta and Princess Alizabeth Norton will be competing for the title of Queen Rhododendra at the Coronation in May. In addition, Prince Jason Garcia, Prince Chad Hughes, Prince Camp Lacouture, Prince Joseph Shepard and Prince James Smith will be competing for the title of King of the Coast. On Thursday, May 19,

at 6:30 p.m., Coronation Night, one young woman and one young man will be crowned 2022 Queen Rhododendra and King of the Coast after an exciting showcase of talents, entertainmen, and performances. Scholarships will be awarded to the entire senior court. Please join us for a fun filled evening where these young people can share their talents and kick off the 2022 Rhododendron Festival. Tickets are $13 per person, with online fee, and there is a livestream option. The 2022 Rhododendron Court has been active in the community since the royal youths were announced in January. From visits to Toastmasters, Rotary, Kiwanis and Soroptimists and volunteering with the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce, the 15 princesses and princes from Mapleton and Siuslaw school districts are showing what it takes to help the 115th Rhododendron Festival be “Back in Bloom.” “I love the whole group. The kids are just amazing,” said one member of the Rhody Court Committee.

Coast Radio to broadcast the return of Rhody Days C oast Radio has been part of the annual Rhododendron Festival since the local station began broadcasting in 1988. Participation in the weekend events and coverage of Florence’s largest annual festival has always been part of the station’s commitment to its community and listeners. Tune in to Florence’s locally owned-and-operated radio stations, KCST-106.9 FM Florence and KCFM AM 1250, 104.1 FM-Florence and 103.1 FM-Mapleton, where you can find out what, where and when things are happening during the 115th Rhododendron Festival. “The return of the Rhody Festival brings back a sense of normalcy, community and social interaction,” says Coast Radio General Man-

ager Jon Thompson. “It’s a much-needed distraction from the pandemic and other concerns in our world today. Whether it is the sound of kids screaming on a carnival ride or marching band in the parade — it’s been too long and I miss it.” In fact, according to Thompson, the station and its personnel set the standard with coverage of their first festival in May 1989, spreading out to events all weekend to provide onthe-spot coverage and keeping listeners informed of nearly everything that happened. But it’s not just been keeping track of festival “goings on.”

Coast Radio has also organized and sponsored events such as the Saturday car cruise as well as providing live coverage of the Grand Floral Parade for more than two decades. In fact, “You’ll find our staff all over town!”

Thompson said. The Coast Radio staff will broadcast from various locations all weekend, giving listeners on-site insights from the carnival rides and midway, bustling Bay Street and the Maple Street vendor

fair. Other live coverage includes Saturday’s 5K and 10K Rhody Run, the FRAA Arts Show and the signature activity, the annual flower show organized by the American Rhododendron Society Florence Chapter at the Florence Events Center. Other Saturday activities such as the junior parade, Car Show and Shine, and Kiwanis Kids Games will be included. Saturday’s live coverage wraps up with the Coast Radio Classic Car Cruise and oldies broadcast on KCFM from Old Town. Coverage resumes just before noon on Sunday with the grand floral parade and updates from all over town.

“Our stations are great companions for residents and the Florence area’s outof-town guests to get the latest on local events, discover local resources and get the most current daily news, weather and sports,” said Thompson. Registration for the Classic Car Cruise begins at 7 a.m. Saturday morning. All vehicles registered in the Show and Shine will automatically be signed up. During the day at the show, volunteers with Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue will be on hand to register additional vehicles. All registration fees go directly to the firefighters association. They also provide traffic control for the “closed loop” cruise. See RADIO page 19

Sixto the Smiling Starfish by Brian Holmes (Author), McKenna Olson (Author) A grandfather’s story comes alive through the adventures of a young starfish who finds courage as he remembers the lessons his mother taught him. Inspired by the beautiful Pacific Northwest coastline, “Sixto the Smiling Starfish” is a beautifully illustrated children’s book written by a father and daughter duo from Florence, Oregon. This heartwarming story will spark discussions about bravery through the challenges of life, new experiences, positive attitudes, and even the importance of caring for the world around us. A great read that can bring young children and families together, encouraging them to create stories and memories of their own. A generous portion of the proceeds of this book are donated to Spice Isle Smiles- a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing charitable dental care to children in Grenada.

Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. and an awards ceremony is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. Medals will be awarded for the top three in each of five age groups for both male and female entrants. Rhody Run T-shirts are available for $15 in advance of race day, $20 on race day.

Mosey on down!

In addition, Habitat is sponsoring the Rhody Mosey! Participants can meet up by Veteran’s Memorial Park in your best costume. MAY 2022 • 115th Rhododendron Festival • 19 RADIO from page 7 “We’ve been honored to work with and contribute to the firefighters association during the past 23 years on this popular Saturday evening event,” noted Thompson, who also acknowledged the strong support of members of the Rods ‘N’ Rhodies Committee, who have shouldered more of the work in organizing the cruise over the last five years. Advertisers continue to support

this popular event, including this year’s Classic Care Cruise sponsors: Randy Dixon Allstate Insurance; Shervin’s Tire and Automotive; Coast Insurance Services; Apex Helicopters; ICM Restaurant; John Barnett with Coldwell Banker Coast Real Estate; Shawn Fleming Construction; Scott Ryland Plumbing; Central Lincoln PUD; Sea Lion Caves; Tony’s Garage; and Rods ‘N’ Rhodies Inc. Staging for the Cruise begins at

5:30 p.m. at the Florence Christian Church at Second and Ivy streets. This year’s Classic Car Cruise will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the remote broadcast going on the air at 6 pm. The Coast Radio mobile broadcast unit will be set up in Old Town on Maple Street at the intersection with Bay Street, at the south end of the vendor fair. News Director George Henry anchors the broadcast, not only talking about the cars and the trucks as they cruise by, but

he’ll visit with some of the participants as he plays the top hits from the 1950s and ‘60s. KCST’s live coverage of Sunday’s Grand Floral Parade begins at 12:15 p.m., with “float-by-float” descriptions of entries from the reviewing stand at the Sears Hometown Store at 685 Highway 101. The Parade Broadcast is sponsored by the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce: Community Champions and Leaders.

KCST on-air personalities George Henry and Calista Cates will provide commentary, including background and insights on the parade’s floats, bands and equestrian, motorized, and commercial entries, as well as the keynote dignitaries and personalities. When the 115th festival is over and in the books, Coast Radio News and its website, www.kcst. com, will carry the results of the weekend activities.

Pioneer Museum recreates history with 2022 Rhody Court

I

n researching the long, storied history of the annual Florence Rhododendron Festival, one discovers that the Royal Rhododendron Court used to participate in the official parade of barges and literal “floats” on the Siuslaw River. A part of that long ago tradition is returning for the 2022 festival. The court, headed by Queen Rhododendra and the King of the Coast, will embark on an upriver cruise from U.S. Coast Guard Station Siuslaw to the Port of Siuslaw dock next to Mo’s restaurant in Historic Old Town Florence. From there, they will lead a procession up Maple Street to the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum, 278 Maple St., for a public reception and exhibit at the museum of Rhododendron Festival history and memorabilia at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 21. “None of us were here back

The first Rhododendron Festival in 1908 featured the Queen’s Barge on the Siuslaw River. This year, members of the 2022 Rhody Court will take their own barge with U.S. Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River. when this was a regular part of the festival,” says court mentor Kay King. “Many of the homes in Florence then faced the river and people from all over would line the riverbank to watch the parade on the river. “As part of these festivities, the mayor of Florence would present Queen Rhododendra with an official, ceremonial ‘key to the city’

made of rhododendron wood. This tradition will be renewed in a ceremony at the museum, right after the processional, and ceremonial keys will be presented to the 2022 King and Queen.” The museum’s board and volunteers have worked hard to put together a limited-time exhibit of Rhododendron Festival memorabilia and its rich history for this

year’s festival. Museum admission will be free to the public during the Rhody Court’s visit. The public is invited to meet the court, tour the museum, and be part of the revival of this historic tradition. According to Museum Board President Del Phelps, “The museum is honored to be a part of this ceremony and to present an

extensive historic exhibit for locals and visitors. We hope all will come for some enjoyable community fellowship, recollections of past festivals and to meet current and former Rhody Court royalty.” During the Rhody Court’s visit, museum volunteers will be dressed in period costumes and talk with visitors from a historic perspective about life in the Siuslaw Region during the late 1800s. There will be demonstrations of pioneer life including cooking, sewing, weaving, and more. “This year’s court is comprised of some of the very best young people I’ve ever worked with in my history as a court mentor,” added King. “They’ve been great ambassadors for the event, raised hundreds of dollars in scholarship funds through Rhody Fest pin sales (available at the Florence Area Chamber of See MUSEUM page 25
