elcome to Florence — Oregon’s coastal playground! I hope you are “Always Ready to Rhody!” because that’s our theme this year in honor of the U.S. Coast Guard’s centennial here in Florence. You have in your hands the definitive guide to the 110th annual Rhododendron Festival — the third oldest floral festival in the West. Take in all the fun Florence has to offer throughout the weekend in Historic Old Town and all around town. Stroll the Vendor Fair on Maple Street for amazing arts, crafts, and food. Visit all the unique shops and galleries in Old Town, and enjoy your choice of nearly three dozen great restaurants in Old Town and all around town. Be sure to get this year’s official Rhododendron Festival pin at the Visitor’s Center at 290 Highway 101. Pin ownership has its privileges! At last count, nine fabulous restau-

clam chowder if you’re wearing the pin. Check out the spectacular rhododendron show at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. (just a block or so east of Highway 101), and stick around for the music, art and other festivities going on there too. Venture over to Three Rivers Casino Resort for the Let It Ride Motorcycle show and other fun all weekend. Of course, Rhody Fest would not be complete without a trip to the Davis Shows Carnival for thrilling rides, midway games and the best in carnival fare. Nor would your experience be complete without watching Saturday’s Junior Parade or the pageantry of Sunday’s Grand Floral Parade. Please enjoy your stay here in Florence, and come back again and again — there’s too much to do in just one weekend here in Oregon’s Coastal Playground! BETTINA HANNIGAN

SUNDAY’S GRAND FLORAL PARADE BEGINS AT 27TH STREET AND ENDS IN OLD TOWN

lorence is “Always Ready to Rhody,” and nowhere is that more obvious than during the Grand Floral Parade on Sunday, May 21. “We are so honored to have the Siuslaw River Coast Guard Station as our grand marshal. They are celebrating their centennial year of service in Florence. The Coast Guard’s slogan is Semper Paratus, or Always Ready; so in recognition, this year we are ‘Always Ready to Rhody,’” says Florence Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bettina Hannigan. “This is our 110th Grand Floral Parade. We’re looking to entrants to really step up this year and rock the rhodies, even if they have to use artificial ones, make them out of paper or paint them on their floats. Even parade-goers can wear rhododen-

Grand Floral Parade dron blooms to make the festival more festive.” The parade, one of the longest running events of its kind in the west, begins at noon on Sunday, May 21, at 27th Street and Highway 101,

and follows the highway to and through Historic Old Town. There are lots of places along the 2.5 mile route to cheer for your favorite marching band, commercial or non-profit organization float, car club or equestrian group. But plan early. Locals and regular visitors are known to put out their lawn chairs along the route the night before to save their favorite viewing locations. Local police and fire personnel will convert the five-lane Highway 101 into a two-lane road with one lane in each direction on the east side of the thoroughfare, allowing for some parade-goers to watch from the center turn lane. The procession zigs west one block before the Siuslaw River bridge, then zags down to Bay Street to where it disbands just past the carnival on Nopal.

COAST RADIO ‘READY

Coast Radio has been “Ready to Rhody” since the station began broadcasting in 1988. Participation in the weekend events and coverage of Florence’s largest annual festival has always been part of the station’s commitment to its community and listeners. Tune in to Florence’s locally ownedand-operated radio stations, KCST 106.9 FM and KCFM 104.1 FM/1250 AM, where you can find out what’s happening and when during the 110th Rhododendron Festival. “The station has organized and sponsored events such as the Saturday car cruise and provided live coverage of the Grand Floral Parade for more than two decades,” said Coast Radio General Manager Jon Thompson. “You’ll find our staff at most of the events during the weekend.” Coast Radio’s on-air staff will broadcast from various locations all weekend, giving listeners on-site insights from the carnival rides and midway, bustling Bay Street and the Old Town vendor fair. Other live coverage includes Saturday’s

5K and 10K Rhody Run, junior parade, and news and interviews from the Elks Lodge chicken barbeque and pie sale. Saturday’s live coverage concludes with the KCST Classic Car Cruise and oldies broadcast from Old Town. Coverage resumes just before noon on Sunday with the grand floral parade and updates from all over town. “Our stations are great companions for residents and the Florence area’s out-oftown guests to get the latest on local events, discover local resources, and get the most current daily news, weather and sports,” Thompson said. Coast Radio not only broadcasts the annual car cruise, it organizes and hosts the entire event with the help of the Siuslaw Valley Firefighters Association. Registration for the KCST Classic Car Cruise begins at 8:30 a.m. during the Rhody Cruisers car club’s Show and Shine in the Grocery Outlet parking lot at 21st Street and Highway 101. Registration is required for all cruisers and entries are limited to the first 150 registrants of 1976 and older model vehicles.

TO RHODY’ ON AIR

As part of its sponsorship of the Classic Car Cruise, KCST donates 100 percent of the registration fees to the Siuslaw Valley Firefighters Association. “We’ve been honored to benefit our firefighters with this annual fundraiser since 1998,” says Coast Radio’s former news director, Bob Sneddon, who organized the event for many years in partnership with key sponsors Beachcomber Pub, Central Lincoln PUD, Keri’s Dunes Café, Shervin’s Tire and Automotive, Krab Kettle, ACR Automotive, Coast Insurance Services, Jerry’s Place, Streets Insurance, Florence RV and Automotive Specialist, Bridgewater Fish House and Dan Lofy Construction. Staging for the Cruise begins at 5 p.m. at the Florence Christian Church at second and Ivy streets. Cruisers who want to be judged for one of the many prizes need to be in place by 6 p.m. The KCST Classic Car Cruise will drive down the Old Town loop beginning at 6:30 p.m. for one hour. Coast Radio will have its mobile broadcast unit set up in Old Town on

Maple Street at the intersection with Bay Street, at the south end of the vendor fair. Sneddon, who continues as a part time air talent with the radio station, and noted classic car expert Mike Groshong, will play top hits from the ’50s and ’60s while they highlight the cars and interview their drivers. KCST’s live coverage of Sunday’s Grand Floral Parade begins at 11:45 a.m., with “float-by-float” descriptions of entries from the reviewing stand at TR Hunter Real Estate, between 17th and 18th streets on Highway 101. The broadcast is sponsored by the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Sponsors and Underwriters. W.G. Peterson Woodworking will once again erect the parade broadcast booth for KCST on-air personalities George Henry and Calista Cates. The station’s broadcast team will provide commentary including background and insights on the parade’s floats, bands and equestrian, motorized, and commercial entries, as well as the keynote dignitaries and personalities.

For more information or to purchase tickets, visit eventcenter.org. The new Queen Rhododendra and King of the Coast will be introduced in the Saturday, May 20, edition of Siuslaw News and at thesiuslawnews.com.

Rhody buttons get you a buck off chowder Let’s paint the By this weekend, Rhododendron Festival organizers hope everyone in Florence will have, and be wearing one of the 2 0 1 7 Rhododendron Festival buttons. This year, there is a delicious, old-fashioned benefit that comes with pin ownership. This year’s pin follows the festival’s theme, “Always Ready to Rhody” — a motto borrowed from the Coast Guard’s “Semper Paratus,” or “Always Ready.” In honor of the Coast Guard’s centennial anniversary in Florence, USCG Station Siuslaw River was chosen to be the festival’s honorary

parade grand marshals. The festival button features the “Always Ready” motto, an anchor, a patriotic red, white and blue color scheme, and the traditional rhododendron bloom. The Florence Area Chamber of Commerce, organizer of the May 19-21 event, is bringing back two of the festival’s past traditions — metal campaign-style buttons and clam chowder. The committee is offering the “old-fashioned” coated metal pin for $3 this year. Proceeds go toward scholarships for Queen Rhododendra, the King of the Coast and members of the

town rhody!

Florence-area businesses are joining the Rhododendron Court Committee and the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce to “paint the town rhody” for the month of May. Join this colorful movement by inviting the team to come out and paint giant red and green rhododendrons on the windows of your business or home. It is a warm and welcoming way to invite visitors and guests into your location and to share the Rhododendron Festival spirit! Participation helps to fund the scholarships for the Rhododendron Court. These 13 amazing students are working hard as Florence ambassadors within and beyond the community. It's a wonderful tradition and your business will benefit from being Rhody ready! Rhody Court. So what’s the chowder connection? As an incentive to purchase buttons, local restaurants are offering $1 off a bowl of clam chowder to each person wearing a 2017 Rhody button through the month of May. Participating restaurants will have a sign posted at their entrance and a participant’s list will be posted at www.FlorenceChamber.com. The idea for the clam chowder discount hearkens back to the days when clam chowder booths were located along the Rhododendron Festival’s parade route. The new Rhody buttons can be purchased from any of the Rhododendron Court members, from their button boxes found at businesses in Florence, and at the Chamber of Commerce Visitor’s Center, 290 Highway 101.

In May 1908, Florence began the second flower festival in Oregon, and the third on the entire West Coast. This first celebration included Laura Johnson’s Coronation and a ride on the Queen’s Barge. As queen, Johnson received the keys to the city. People decorated businesses and homes with “the national colors, evergreens and the beautiful rhododendron flowers which grow in profusion on the neighboring hills.” Trailheads*
