lorence is revving-up for both the annual Rods N Rhodies Invitational Car Show and Benefit and the Community-wide Garage Sale.

This year’s edition takes place primarily in and around Historic Old Town Florence on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10 and 11. The Community-wide Garage Sale continues through Sunday, Sept. 12.

“At Rods N Rhodies, you know you’ll see some of the West Coast’s most gorgeous, amazing, awe-inspiring hot rods all around town,” said organizer Gary Cargill. “Up to 125 of the west coast’s best high-end hot rods, rat rods, and custom cruisers from 1976 and earlier will be in town.

Some are worth up to a quarter-million dollars.”

Though known primarily for the annual September event, Rods N Rhodies became its own local volunteer-led nonprofit in 2018 with a renewed vision to provide automotive assistance to locals in need.

This year’s event will be a benefit for their mission and goals.

Top hot rods, Communitywide Garage Sale return to Florence Sept. 10-12

Bargain hunters can pick up a guide to the Community-wide Garage Sale at the Siuslaw News office, 148 Maple St., at TheSiuslawNews.com and in the Saturday edition of the newspaper that week. Maps will also be available at FlorenceChamber. com.

People can then cruise the bargain trail all weekend to stop by dozens of commercial and private sales all over town.

On Saturday, Bay Street will be blocked to regular traffic beginning at 7 a.m. for exhibitors to enter at the west end at Kingwood.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. cars will be on display along both sides of the street, there will be themed music, and raffle tickets for sale with a different winner’s name drawn every half hour.

At 4:15 p.m., immediately following the awards presentation, cruisers will begin the annual classic car cruise in and around Historic Old Town.

“The cruise is one of the public’s and exhibitors’ favorite events during the weekend,” said Cargill. “Low and slow is the goal.”

Transportation Solutions Project

Introducing Rods N Rhodies, Inc., an Oregon nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization formed in Florence in November 2018.

“We are an organization that would like to be part of the solution,” said Rods N Rhodies President Gary Cargill.

Formed from the committee that has been planning the September Rods N Rhodies for the past 13 years, the nonprofit wanted to find a way to highlight how cars are needed for transportation.

“Most of us go through day to day activities without even thinking about how we will get to where we want to go.

We have the means of transportation that is reliable and comfortable. However, within our community, there are those who struggle to make ends meet and don’t have that luxury,” Cargill said.

Many families who do own transportation may not have the means to properly maintain the vehicle and keep the focus on safety and reliability.

The everyday costs such as food, clothing, housing and even school activities can take precedence. That means that transportation for them may simply be a luxury.

“These items are some of the things that can send young families into deep distress,” Cargill said. “For many families, even the vehicle registration fees, insurance costs and fuel to are overwhelming.”

Many programs and organizations providing for food, clothing and even electricity are available to families, but transportation solutions are far and few. By working with community support such as churches, outreach services, family centers and vehicle repair facilities, Rods N Rhodies is helping to provide a safe and reliable means of transportation for people in the Siuslaw Region.

The nonprofit has already partnered with Siuslaw Outreach Services and Florence Parenting and Pregnancy Center.

“Once the families have been identified, it will be necessary for community businesses to provide the ability to resolve the problem,” Cargill said. “You may be surprised to find out how many of the community repair facilities have and continue to

reach out to those in need, at the cost to their business.”

Rods N Rhodies seeks to connect those families to services, and pay for them.

Community businesses such as Tony’s Garage, Hoberg’s Auto Center, Les Schwab Tire Center and Shervins Auto Center are repair partners, with Davison Auto Parts (Napa) also involved. Other supporters include Western Lane Community Foundation and Shorewood Senior Living.

“We thank them for their support in becoming a major addition to the solution of providing safe and reliable transportation for those families who work, go to school and even volunteer in our community,” Cargill said.

“Rods N Rhodies, Inc. will need more support, volunteers, businesses and grant writers in order to continue this project on a continuous basis.”

Put items you expect to draw the most attention near the end of the driveway to entice passers-by. A neat and inviting appearance may convey that you’ve taken care of your home and your belongings.

It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value.

Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible.

Some papers have community calendar sections where they also can make mention of the sale.

• Place signs around your neighborhood. Be aware that there are ordinances that govern where signage can be located. Make sure signs are legible for drivers and pedestrians alike.

Then, pick them up afterwards and recycle or reuse them.

• Have a nice display. First impressions can mean a lot. Buyers are more apt to visit neat, well-laid-out sales than those that are just a bunch of boxes that have to be dug through.

• Be reasonable when pricing items.

Be objective in your assessment of your things. What has value to you may not have as much value to someone else. Leave room for negotiation.
