F

lorence is revving up for the 11th annual Invitational Rods ’n Rhodies Car Show and Community-wide Garage Sale this weekend, Sept. 7 to 9.

The event, organized by the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce, showcases more than 100 of the best high-end hot rods and custom cruisers from the West Coast, dozens of private and commercial garage sales all over town and other family-friendly events. “Florence is a hub for local car enthusiasts. We have several of our own clubs, including the Rhody Cruisers, BeachKomber Car Club, Central Oregon Coast British Car Club and the Military Vehicle Group,” said Chamber Assistant Director Terry Abeyta. “This community has a population that loves beautiful, hot, classic cars.” Rods ‘n Rhodies comes at the tail-end of the cruiser season in Florence, according to Gary McDaniels, who runs Oregon Coast Hot Rods and the “Cruiser Newser” newsletter about regional events, meetups and cruises. Florence’s other “show and shine” events are the Rhododendron Festival, Wings & Wheels Fly-In and

Car Show, Rods ’n Rhodies and Rhody Cruisers Classic Car Stand-Around in June. “There is a great car culture in Florence,” McDaniels said. “The Rhody Cruisers is a main club, with 160 members receiving the newsletter and 60 actively participating. We get at least 20 people and their cars at our regular events.” These include visits to area restaurants, such as Gingerbread Village in Mapleton and A&W in Florence, as well as to businesses, such as Les Schwab’s upcoming Customer Appreciation Day on Saturday, Sept. 15. Many local cars, as well as invited cars from outside the region, will be on display Friday for the all-comers “Kool Car Stand-Around” showand-shine at the Port of Siuslaw parking lot at the east end of Bay Street. Owners of any classic car are welcome to exhibit along with the invited vehicles. Check-in for this free event begins at noon and the event ends at 7 p.m. The Florence-Siuslaw Lions Club will be offering food for sale and there will be music by DJ Russ Strohmeyer. “I hope everyone comes out, as it’s always a great party,” McDaniels said. “It’s a standaround, so there aren’t any awards. It’s a chance for people to check out the classic cars, talk and

have a good time.” The Invitational Car Show moves to Historic Old Town for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. where the invited high-end rides will be on display again. A poker walk, raffles, a Pinewood Derby open to the public to enter ($5 fee) and live DJ music will add to the excitement. Classic car admirers are encouraged to vote for Best of Show and People’s Choice Awards through 4 p.m. Then, from 4:15 to 5:45 p.m., the official car cruise will wind its way through Old Town to the sounds of ’50s and ’60s music. On Sunday, the Invitational Car Show, music, poker walk and raffles all continue on Bay Street in Old Town from 9 a.m. to noon. The awards presentations begin at noon, along with announcements of prizes and raffle winners. McDaniels plans to show his 1974 Chevrolet Vega that he has owned for 30 years. “Other cars have come and gone,” he said, “but that one sticks around.” Like other car collectors, McDaniels has worked on several projects over the years. He even started his son on cars young, when he was only 10.

Florence’s annual treasure hunt begins all over the area on Friday, Sept. 7, and continues through Sunday with Rods ’n Rhodies Invitational Car Show weekend. The sixth annual Communitywide Garage Sale has dozens of locations throughout the city and surrounding communities, as well as business participants in Historic Old Town and the Antique District on Highway 101. All are listed in the directory map (see pages 3-4). There are treasures aplenty out there just waiting to be found! If you’re a seasoned garage-saler, you probably don’t need help. But if this is all new to you, here are a few hints to help make the day extra fun. 1. Pick an area or neighborhood to start in, then use a highlighter to help map out your “plan of attack.” You’ve got a lot of ground to cover — stay organized. 2. Pack some extra boxes, sacks and/or packing paper in your car. It’s always a big disappointment to get home with a fragile find and discover that it’s been broken in transport because it wasn’t carefully wrapped. 3. Bring plenty of change and small bills. You are going to need them! 4. Take snacks and beverages along to keep you fortified. This garage-sale stuff is serious business and takes a lot of energy. 5. Be friendly. Have fun. Don’t be afraid to negotiate, but haggle fairly. Keep it fun! Read inside for more tips on how to make the perfect find or even set up your sale.

While most people in the local car clubs are in their 50s to 70s, some younger members are in the 30s and 40s. “We have an interesting mix of ideas. We don’t have any souped up Hondas or tuners, but we do have rat rods, classic convertibles and cars like that. It’s a big diversity,” he said. McDaniels has served on the Rods ’n Rhodies Committee for the past four years, bringing his experience as a “car guy” to the chamber committee. The committee chair is Gary Cargill and other members include Ross Kronert and Mike Groshong. In addition, other volunteers help with registration, gates and more. Friday and continues throughout the weekend. Bargain hunters can seek their own treasures by following the map provided in this special section and at the Visitor’s Center. Each official sale provided a listing of the items at their sales, which should help people narrow down their destinations and plot their paths. By joining the annual sale, many people are clearing out their garages for the coming winter. For McDaniels, that means retiring his Chevy Vega for the off season. “Our cars go into the shop to fix all the things we broke over the year,” he said. Those interested in learning more about classic cars, starting a collection, making a sale or building or flipping cars, rods or cycles can check out McDaniels’ website, oregoncoasthotrods.com, join his newsletter for up-to-date information on area car events or like the Oregon Coast Hot Rod page on Facebook. Out with the old, in with the new Many people feel the dawn of a new school year provides an opportunity to clean the slate and begin anew. That notion can be applied in various ways, including around the house. Cleaning the slate at home may involve reducing clutter around the house. Clutter can gradually overtake a home’s interior, turning a once pristine home into one overwhelmed with nonessential items. Clearing a home of clutter can seem like a monumental task, but the following tips can help homeowners and apartment dwellers make their homes clutterfree. • Embrace the purge. Take a hard look at what you use and what you don’t use around the house. Holding on to items you rarely use can contribute to clutter and create a disorganized home. Save only a few sentimental items, donating, recycling or discarding the others. • Thin out DVD and CD libraries. Thanks to streaming services and digital music players, DVDs and compact discs have become somewhat obsolete. Discard or donate DVDs that you can just as easily stream through your television, and convert compact discs to digital files that you can play on your computer and MP3 players, ultimately donating the discs and clearing space. • Purchase furniture that doubles as storage. Storage ottomans and benches can help clear common areas and bedrooms of clutter such as blankets and bed linens that can make rooms feel more claustrophobic. Storage furniture might not get excess items out of the house, but such furnishings can create a more comfortable, welcoming environment. • Adopt an “out with the old, in with the new” mantra. Resolve to discard old items after purchasing new ones or receiving birthday or holiday gifts. Hanging on to old items because they can still function and serve some utility is a recipe for a cluttered home. Anytime you or a family member brings a new item into your home, make sure the item it is replacing finds its way out the door. Clearing clutter is a goal for many people at the dawn of a new year. As intimidating as clutter can seem, discarding it is easier than it may appear. Many organizational experts suggest going through items one by one and asking oneself if this is something that has been used recently. If it’s been collecting dust for a year or more, it can go. When clearing clutter, choose to either donate the items or hold a sale to clear them.

H

erb & Bonnie Sutton of Gold Hill, Ore., won the 2017 Rods ’n Rhodies Car Show Best of Show with their 1936 Ford 3-window Coupe. Named the “So Lo,” this car has an air ride system that allows it to sit low to the ground. The car was built by Carrs Rods & Customs

and features House Of Kolor’s Candy Lime and White Pearl livery. According to Carrs, “This is a full custom air-bagged chopped top Rod. We incorporated a lot of ‘40 ford parts — headlights, taillights, dash — ‘39 Ford moldings, and custom moldings made

from brass and then chromed. The front fenders are extended 5 inches and it has ‘40 bumpers with custom made filler panels. It’s powered by a 350 Chevy with old style 3 deuces. This green classic has won several other awards in the Pacific Northwest.

lorence, known as Oregon’s Coastal Playground, is host to Rods ’n Rhodies Invitational Car Show, an annual event that car enthusiasts look forward to each summer. The concept of the show began 11 years ago, which allowed local residents to view a car show with the same caliber of vehicles that you would see at a show like the Portland Roadster Show, but within the beautiful venue of Historic Old Town Florence. Within Florence, tucked away in various storage units and garages, are beautiful rolling pieces of art. Many are owned and shown with great pride by members of local car group The Rhody Cruisers. The group is strong in numbers and share their common passion for the

Some maintain the stock appearance of the car while others choose to modify them, making them a personal statement. One such vehicle tucked away most of the fall and winter is a bright yellow 1955 Ford Ranch Wagon, which sports a surf board on its roof most of the time. This gorgeous wagon is probably not new to many of the residents of the area, as it is has shown in Rods ’n Rhodies for the past six years, but many probably don’t know the real story about the car and its owners. Steve and Jayne Smoley are the owners of the Ranch Wagon. Steve is the owner of Pacific Northwest Yard Maintenance and Jayne is the owner of Jayne Smoley Design, with The Studios on First Street in Old Town. They both contribute equally to the community of Florence in

many ways. The couple have owned the car for the past 48 years. This was Steve’s first car, and they had their first date in the wagon and were later married with the car. Steve and Jayne drove this car so much that the gas pedal went through the floor. The wagon sat for 10 years between 1993 and 2003 before it received its frame-off restoration. The body, along with 77 pieces, were acid dipped at Metalworks in Eugene, then paint and body done by Mike Reigles at Show N Shine in Eugene. Jim Nessler built the car in Cottage Grove and Gary Marymann of Lakeside perfected the upholstery. Steve and Jayne have been involved with the Rhody Cruisers for the past 15 years and have enjoyed sharing the bright yellow Ford Ranch wagon at various shows and events. While showing the car at the

Kool Coastal Nights show in Winchester Bay, Ore., in 2017, Steve and a man named Darrell Kearn got into a conservation about how he bought the 1955 Ford Ranch Wagon, originally grey and tan with chrome reverse wheels, about 47 years ago. After more discussion, it was clear to both that Steve purchased the car from Darrell. Now, the two cruisers keep in touch and have developed a good friendship. The Rhody Cruisers meet each first Thursday of the month at A&W Restaurant on Highway 101 in Florence at 4 p.m. to discuss upcoming events and shows and just to get together with each other. This weekend, while people are out viewing these magnificent cars at Rods ’n Rhodies, they are encouraged to talk with the owners and listen to them tell their stories of their pride and joy.

enjoy this potentially rewarding hobby. • Environmental regulations. Some collectors face challenges when attempting to restore classic vehicles because the cars do not meet today’s stringent clean air initiatives that govern automobiles. With the increasing number of new, clean cars on the road, vehicles that fail to meet modern emissions standards may pose a costly problem to classic car collectors. • Introduction of alternative fuels. As governments increasingly emphasize the importance of clean fuel options, classic car owners may find it challenging to find more traditional fuels or face the added expense of adapting their vehi-

cles to run on alternative fuels. • Lack of mechanical expertise. Workers in the automotive trade are trained to manufacture and repair new vehicles. As a result, classic car owners without much mechanical ability of their own may find it difficult to find mechanics with the skills necessary to repair and restore classic cars. • His tor i c re qu i re m e nt s should be heeded. Each state has its own requirements governing classic cars. To qualify for historic vehicle registration, vehicles may need to be 25 years or older, owned solely as a collector’s item and used exclusively for exhibition and educational purposes. When driven for personal use, such vehicles may not be allowed to exceed 1,000 miles per year. Classic cars continue to attract hobbyists from all over the globe. Restoring classic cars can be a rewarding pastime, but one that involves dedication and an investment of both time and money.

ig cars for big kids, sometimes known as adults, aren’t the only attraction in historic Old Town Florence during the 11th annual Rods ’n Rhodies Invitational Car Show this weekend — smaller cars for smaller kids can also be observed racing down the track at the seventh annual Pinewood Derby, produced by Boy Scout Troop 721 of Florence, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8. Everyone is welcome to participate, not just scouts, so get your old Pinewood Derby cars out of moth balls, or create a new car by acquiring an unfinished kit by calling 541-997-7404. Through the years, certain vehicles have proven more desirable to customers than others based on their looks and other attributes. Auto hobbyists devote substantial time and effort to purchasing, restoring and displaying classic cars. While the hobby of restoring classic cars is not necessarily for everyone, its popularity suggests it’s an activity that’s here to stay. According to an article in The Economist, in the wake of the recent recession, investors were increasingly pulling their money out of stocks and converting assets into tangible items, such as classic cars. As late as 2013, collector cars were outperforming other tangible investments like art, wine, stamps and coins by large margins. Those ready to dip their toes in the classic car waters should understand a few key factors that can affect how much they
