Your Community Friend... ...when you need one most.
Burns’s Riverside Chapel/Florence Funeral Home is locally owned and operated by Alan and Karen Burns. The compassionate care that the clients receive from the family is based on their commitment to the community in which they live.
Karen holds a Funeral Director license, and many women have found it comforting to have a woman to talk to during the difficult and stressful times. Karen is proud to be a member of the Florence Kiwanis Club.
Alan served as Mayor of Florence from 1998-2005. He is a second generation Funeral Director and a graduate of San Francisco College of Mortuary Science.
Kourtney is third generation Funeral Director/ Embalmer. After graduating from Mt. Hood Community College with an AA in Mortuary Sciences, she joined the family business in 2009. Kourtney is the proud mother of Clayton Kent and a house full of pets.
From traditional to unconventional — military, indoor or outdoor, formal or casual — they work to ensure that all the needs are met to honor the loved ones and families that they serve. In addition to the chapel and Pacific Sunset Cemetery, they own and operate two crematories — one for humans and one for pets. They offer products and memorabilia to honor those that have passed away and for beloved pets as well.
Randy came to the business in 2016. He is currently serving his apprenticeship and will be a licensed Funeral Director. He loves the outdoors and spending time with his daughter Lexi and fiancé Laurie.

t is important to stay active and eat healthy foods in an effort to promote fitness and well-being. This is especially true for seniors, many of whom lead increasingly sedentary lifestyles as they age. The American Heart Association says adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity, and a Harvard University study says that exercise can be an insurance policy for heart health. Taking an active role in your own health care is easier than people may think. And the benefits of such a proactive approach

How to approach vehicle maintenance and social distancing
T
he outbreak of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 in the winter of 2019-20 required people of all ages and backgrounds to make changes in their daily lives. Elderly men and women were among the groups the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified as high-risk for severe illness from COVID-19. That forced people 65 years and older to be especially cautious when engaging in otherwise normal activities, including having their vehicles serviced. In recognition of the threat posed by COVID-19, many auto dealerships and service shops implemented changes to their
operations to ensure the safety of their employees and their customers, including those in high-risk groups. Seniors can take additional measures to ensure they stay safe while having their vehicles serviced.

Inquire about safety measures Before booking vehicle maintenance appointments, seniors should call the dealership or body shop to determine what’s being done to keep everyone safe. Many such businesses quickly implemented new safety protocols so they should be ready and willing to share this information over the
risk segments of the population to adhere to stay-at-home measures. Older people are still vulnerable to COVID-19 even if the number of reported cases in their towns has decreased. Pickup service, in which a service shop employee will come pick up and then drop off a customer’s car once the work is done, can be a great way for elderly drivers to have their vehicles serviced without going out in public. Even if pickup is not policy, ask if it’s possible and request that your vehicle be disinfected upon Ask about pickup service Some communities that have being returned. Are vehicle interiors being sprayed with disinfectant before and after maintenance appointments? Are employees wearing masks each day? Facts about Alzheimer’s Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, is often mistaken as something that only affects aging men and women. While the Alzheimer’s Association notes that age is the biggest risk factor for Alzheimer’s, the group also warns that even men and women nowhere close to retirement age can develop the disease. In fact, the Alzheimer’s Association reports that, in the United States alone, roughly 200,000 people under the age of 65 have early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Recognizing that Alzheimer’s is not just for retirees but capable of affecting younger men and women with families and careers is important, as the Alzheimer’s Association points out that healthcare providers typically do not look for signs or symptoms of Alzheimer’s in young people. In such people, symptoms of Alzheimer’s may be incorrectly attributed to stress. Adults who suspect they might be suffering from early-onset Alzheimer’s should have a comprehensive medical evaluation, which may include a neurological exam and/ or brain imaging, conducted by a physician who specializes in Alzheimer’s disease.

Are you ready for Open Enrollment? Every year from October 15 to December 7, people with Medicare have the opportunity to change their health and drug plans. Companies that offer Medicare programs change their rates, co-pays, deductibles, drug lists and coverage items each year. Consumers should receive information about the 2021 plans by October 1st in time to review them before Open Enrollment begins. Due to the COVID pandemic, local SHIBA counselors are doing appointments via telephone or Zoom. SHIBA counselors assist with decisions and enrollment in programs, transitions when people are new to Medicare, and troubleshooting if problems arise. SHIBA counselors are trained volunteers, serving under the direction of the Center for Medicare Services, who provide free, non-biased services. Appointments are offered throughout the year and most every Friday during Open Enrollment.

To show you the world ... tips for senior travelers Please note, travel beyond 50 miles of your area is not recommended under COVID-19 lockdown guidelines. It is hoped that these tips may help seniors travel once restrictions lift.
F
ew demographics have the free time and the financial capacity to travel as much as retirees. Now that children have flown the coop and retirement papers have been filed, the world is many seniors’ oyster. According to a 2017 survey from AARP, travel is a top goal for more than 80 percent of Baby Boomers. Children may find that encouraging their aging parents to travel can promote more independence and help them live fulfilling lives in retirement. These tips can make travel easier for any senior ready to see the world.
1. Seek the most direct route. Traveling may be a bit easier to endure when the route is as short and direct as possible. It may cost a little more to book nonstop flights or travel during peak hours, but that investment may be worth it.
2. Choose senior-friendly travel services. Working with a trusted travel advisor is often easier than booking your travel yourself. Travel agents often have inside information and may be privy to perks and discounts. Plus they can

Experience state-of-the-art care with Chad E. Clement, D.D.S., P.C. Our team is all about providing advanced dental care that goes above and beyond when it comes to quality and comfort. Besides staying informed about the latest techniques and products in the industry, we also keep up with the most advanced pieces of dental technology. We use digital X-rays, which significantly reduce the amount of radiation exposure while also quickly delivering enhanced images. They’re better for the environment too, because they don’t require developing chemicals! We also have intraoral cameras, which we use as both a diagnostic and educational tool. It’s not the easiest to see into your own mouth, and the magnified images from an intraoral camera give you a close look at your own oral health. When your smile needs a little extra TLC to get back to great con-
dition, we want to provide care as quickly and comfortably as possible. We use the CEREC system to provide our patients with sameday crowns, compared to the normal weeks-long turnaround time. We also provide laser dentistry, which has a number of great benefits including much gentler procedures and faster recovery periods with periodontal treatment. We have redefined patient comfort. Lying with your mouth open while someone works on your teeth is far from the definition of comfortable, but with our Isolite™ patient comfort system, we can make it a little easier on you. The built-in bite block allows you to rest your jaw, and its light and suction features let us work more efficiently so you can spend less time in the dental chair. their personal treasures to fit their own tastes and memories. We’d really like to share more about New Friends Senior Living along with answering any questions you might have. Regional elder care resources
N
umerous elder care resources are available for those who don’t know where to look. Start by researching the National Council on Aging, www.ncoa.org. This is a national leader and trusted association that helps people age 60 and older. AARP, www.aarp.org, is yet another organization dedicated to helping seniors. It offers a host of information on everything from senior discounts to products to health and other information specific to seniors. The federal government has mandated Area Agency on Aging, www.n4a.org, facilities in every area. Military veterans or those who are/were married to a veteran may be eligible for various benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, www.va.gov.
