etirement is on the horizon for a significant number of people. Around 10,000 people retire each day in the United States, according to a study by Merrill Lynch and Age Wave, a consultancy studying the cultural and economic impacts of aging. But many soon-to-be retirees are not fully prepared for life after their work life ends. Shedding new light on this next chapter can make retirement something to look forward to even more.
How retired are you? Retirement may no longer mean what it once did. Some retirees remove themselves entirely from the active employment market, while others prefer to keep at least one toe in the professional water. Some retirees change fields and do part-time work. Others may volunteer their time without getting paid. Still, some choose to use retirement as an opportunity to spearhead a new business venture that may not have
been possible beforehand. Retirees should reflect on their goals, as well as their finances, and make plans accordingly.

Benefit from having a pet
Terpening Terrace — Retirement, Resort Style At Terpening Terrace Retirement, get the comfort of home with the luxury you deserve. The origins of a place tell a great deal about what that place stands for. Back in 1944, 50 Ruby Ave. in Eugene was home to the Terpening family. Bill Terpening grew up on this property filled with fruit orchards, a rose garden and a manicured lawn. Bill says, “As my folks created a showplace here in Eugene years ago, we have created a place that will be a credit to the community.” The Terpenings, along with the other founders, built this community on the values of family, community and elegance. To this day, Terpening Terrace is still independently owned by those same people. Terpening Terrace believes that a retirement community means the freedom to indulge, security in your independence, and most importantly, maintaining that feeling of home. Find elegance, great food, family and community at Terpening Terrace at 50 Ruby Ave. in Eugene, by calling 541-689-0619 or going to www. terpeningterrace.com.

Loneliness affects people of all ages, but it is particularly problematic among seniors. Older adults who may be isolated can benefit from having a pet around. According to a study published in Aging &
Mental Health, older adults who owned pets were 36 percent less likely to say they were lonely compared to those who didn’t have an animal companion. • Pets can save lives. Pets can be trained to perform various tasks around the house and in the community. Rescue animals assist in finding people after natural disasters. Medical alert pets can help people with debilitating illnesses and assist physically impaired people with everyday tasks. • Pets help lower allergy risks. Keeping pets around can reduce a child’s likelihood of developing allergies by as much as 33 percent, according to a study by pediatrician James E. Gern that was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. People exposed early on to animals tend to develop stronger immune systems overall. • Pets provide socialization opportunities. A pet can be the common denominator to strike up new friendships and connect with others. Whether walking around the neighborhood or being part of a pet obedience class or interest group, pets can help their owners expand social circles.
• Pets can help combat stress. Talking to or stroking a pet can make stress easier to handle. A study from researchers at the State University of New York at Buffalo found that, when conducting a stressful task, people experienced less stress when their pets were with them. Various other studies and data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found having a pet around can lower blood pressure, ease anxiety and may even help to lessen aches and pains. Pets provide unconditional love, which can be beneficial to someone facing depression or post traumatic stress disorder. • Pets help teach responsibility. Taking care of a pet can help people become more responsible. According to the American Pet Product Association’s 2011-2012 National Pet Owners Survey, 58 percent of pet owners say their pets help teach their kids to be responsible through routine care, exercise and feeding of the animal. Pets are more than mere companions. In fact, pets can offer numerous health and well-being benefits to people of all ages.

GO GRAY WITH STYLE
G
ray hair is a natural side effect of aging. The rate at which hair will turn to gray differs based on genetics and other factors. Some people may go gray seemingly overnight, while others may gray at the temples first before the rest of their hair gradually changes color. Aging women often wonder if they should cover up their gray hair or embrace the silver. Going gray is no longer something that has women running to their stylists at the sight of the first gray strand. Some actually opt for silver even before their own gray sets in. According to a 2017 survey of hair trends by L’Oréal Professional, 28 percent of women embraced or considered opting for silver hair. The
trend has continued to gain steam. Celebrities like Jamie Lee Curtis and Helen Mirren were some of the first to embrace their grays. Younger celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Pink and Lady Gaga have opted for silver tresses to make a statement. But there are still many women who prefer to transition gradually or avoid the harsh chemicals in some hair products. The National Cancer Institute states that more than 5,000 different chemicals are used in hair dye products, some of which are reported to be carcinogenic in animals. There are many natu-
ral ingredients that can add tint to hair to make gray less visible. Coffee, for example, can cover grays and add dimension to dark tresses. Chamomile tea is recommended for blonds to add natural highlights and perhaps camouflage their grays. Calendula, marigold, rosehips and hibiscus can deepen red shades or add some subtle red highlights. Henna also is a popular natural method

to add a red-orange color to hair. Creating highlights to offset gray hair can work as well. Spraying lemon juice on hair and sitting in the sun can produce lightening effects. Many women are seeking natural options to look their best. Embracing grays or creating subtle tints with natural ingredients can help women feel confident and beautiful.
Volunteer and give back Millions of people across the globe volunteer every day. Without the selfless efforts of volunteers, many charities would be forced to cease operations. In fact, a 2017 study estimated that the labor provided by volunteers is worth roughly $193 billion per year in the United States alone. But volunteering can be as beneficial for volunteers as it can for the organizations they help. For example, the Mayo Clinic Health System’s research has indicated volunteering leads to lower rates of depression while providing individuals with a sense of purpose. Volunteering can be especially beneficial for adults over age 60, with the MCHS noting that older volunteers experience greater increases in life satisfaction and greater positive changes in their perceived health as a result of volunteering. It’s never been easier to volunteer and begin helping your community. People who want
to join the nearly one billion strong global volunteering community need not look far to get involved. • Serve meals at a local shelter or community kitchen. • Sign up to tutor or mentor with a local school program. • Host a résumé writing workshop and conduct practice interview sessions. • Work in conjuction with a local food pantry to organize a food donation drive. • Volunteer to help the environment by working with local, state or national park services to beautify parks. • Work with a local emergency response organization to produce and distribute disasterpreparedness kits. • Read to students or seniors. • Volunteer at an animal shelter. • Join arts organizations and help with events and programs. When it comes to volunteering, the opportunities are as endless as the benefits of giving back to your community.

Bill Olson — The Salvation Army’s Charitable Gift Planner
M
ost of us would like to leave a legacy to show our lives have made a difference. We want to leave this world a better place. We want to know we have contributed to an important work or cause that will benefit the lives of others for generations to come. While your legacy will consist of any physical and financial assets you leave behind — money and real estate — it can be much more than that.
“Some people leave their legacies written on monuments or walls, but the most valuable legacies are those written on the lives and in the hearts of others,” says Bill Olson, Director of Giving for The Salvation Army. “In my work, I come alongside our supporters and their family members and professional advisors and find ways to blend their resources with their heart’s desires.” One of the charitable gift options Olson works with is called a charitable remainder trust. They can be funded with cash, but also appreciated properties or securities. These gifts can provide a lifetime income to the donors and may also provide for loved ones after they pass on. While these gifts take a little more time to design and implement, they are often the most suitable as they consider both the present needs and future needs of individuals and their families. “Once I learn what the true desires and needs of a person or couple are, I can discuss options that may best fit their particular situation,” Olson says. “Then we can craft something that will meet those needs and desires both now and well into the future.” Olson works with professional advisors in naming The Salvation Army in wills, trusts or as a beneficiary of an IRA
in the gifts he handles for The Salvation Army, he seldom finds this is the motivating factor in one’s decision to be charitable. “People really do want to make a difference with their lives,” Olson says, “Making a gift in line with our greatest values is a very rewarding experience and it may well inspire and teach loved ones to also be kind and thoughtful of the needs of others less fortunate than themselves. “In the end, ‘We can’t take it with us!’ However, with good advance planning, everyone can make a significant gift that will The Salvation Army is a big part of recent years’ holiday benefit others long after they celebrations in Florence after Bill Olson worked to estabpass on.” lish a local Kettle Campaign. 14 SENIOR LIVING 2019 | Florence-Area Senior Resource Guide Facts about Alzheimer’s
Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, is often mistaken as something that only affects aging men and women. While the Alzheimer’s Association notes that age is the biggest risk factor for Alzheimer’s, the group also warns that even men and women nowhere close to retirement age can develop the disease. In fact, the Alzheimer’s Association reports that, in the United States alone, roughly 200,000 people under the age of 65 have earlyonset Alzheimer’s disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, many people with early-onset are in their 40s and 50s. Recognizing that Alzheimer’s is not just for retirees but capable of affecting younger men and women with families and careers is important, as the Alzheimer’s Association points out that healthcare providers typically do not look for signs or symptoms of Alzheimer’s in young people. In such people, symptoms of Alzheimer’s may be incorrectly attributed to stress. Adults who suspect they might be suffering from early-onset Alzheimer’s should have a comprehensive medical evaluation, which may include a neurological exam and/or brain imaging, conducted by a physician who specializes in Alzheimer’s disease.

IMPROVE LIFE EXPECTANCY WITH SOME HEALTHY HABITS
“Who Wants to Live Forever” is a song that appeared on the 1986 album “A Kind of Magic” by the rock band Queen. The song often sparks conversation about the potential benefits of immortality. Immortality may not be possible, but many people aspire to improve their chances to live a long and prosperous life. A study published in the journal Lancet analyzed data from the 2016 Global Burden of Diseases project to generate life expectancy predictions from 2017 to 2040 for most countries. The United States saw the largest decline in ranking among high-income countries, as life expectancies in the United States are projected to fall from 43rd in 2016 to 64th by 2040, with an average life expectancy of 79.8. Life expectancy in the U.S. has dropped in each of the past two years, according to annual reports by the National Center for Health Statistics. But there may be hope for Americans yet. Doctors and scientists continually study the lifestyles of people who outlive their life expectancies. While genetics can play a
role, so can following healthy habits, which have been identified to promote longevity. • Don’t smoke. Many smokers have been told that smoking trims 10 years off their life expectancies, and that statement is corroborated by a study published in 2013 in The New England Journal of Medicine that tracked participants over a span of several years. The good news is people who quit before the age of 35 can usually regain those lost
years. • Avoid drug use. Accidental drug overdoses contributed to 63,600 deaths in the United States in 2016, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. Usage of prescription opioids and heroin has skyrocketed in recent years. Drug use also may exacerbate mental illnesses, potentially making drug users more vulnerable to suicide. • Maintain healthy body mass. Moder-

ate to vigorous exercise regimens and diets loaded with healthy foods can keep weight in check. Maintaining a healthy weight has a host of positive side effects, including reduced risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is a leading killer in North America. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, nearly four in 10 adults and 18.5 percent of children in the United States are obese. According to the 2015 Canadian Health Measures Survey, 30 percent of adults in Canada are obese and may require medical support to manage their disease. • Limit alcohol consumption. Some evidence suggests that light drinking can be good for cardiovascular health. However, a paper published in the Lancet suggests every glass of wine or pint of beer over the daily recommended limit will cut half an hour from the expected lifespan of a 40-year-old. The paper says the risks are comparable to smoking. Simple, healthy lifestyle changes can help people increase their life expectancies.

Babysitting for grandparents
Restaurant-Style Dining 7:00 am - 7:00 pm
Witnessing your children getting older and starting their own lives and families can be bittersweet. There is pride that comes with seeing their successes, but the melancholy of knowing that the years have passed so quickly. Although you may no longer be tucking your children into bed, reading them bedtime stories or bandaging “boo-boos,” when your children have children, the chance to nurture can start anew. One of the great joys that comes from having older children is the ability to welcome and love grandchildren. Grandchildren are points of light in people’s lives and provide the exuberance and excitement that reminds you of your own youth. Grandparents often are thrilled to be involved in the care and upbringing of their grandkids. Some may also live with their grandchildren to help take some pressures off of adult children. Babysitting is one way that grandparents can be a frequent fixture in their grandkids’ lives. If it’s been some time since you cared for little children, it’s well worth it to take a refresher course in child care. MAKE SURE IT’S SAFE Conduct a safety audit of your home if grandchildren will be coming over to your place. Are outlets secured with covers? Are medications you may be taking out of reach? Do you have
gates to block stairs or restrict access to certain rooms? Modifications may be needed. ASSESS YOUR HEALTH Chasing after children can be a workout. Be sure you are up for the challenge and have the stamina. If you have any medical conditions that can impair judgement or reaction time, you might want to reconsider babysitting.
TAKE DIRECTIONS The way you parented may not be the same way your own children parent. Be humble and follow their lead with regard to instructions. The parenting guide Apt Parenting advises that you should ask about the eating and sleeping habits of the child. You may have to defer to your own children’s guidelines on discipline and behavior.
LEARN WHAT’S NEW Many things regarding childcare have changed in the last 20 years, including safety laws and guidelines. Be sure you are up to date on these changes. And if you aren’t certain about something, ask. This involves everything from crib bar widths to car seat installation. Babysitting can be a joyous task for grandparents who are ready for the job.

Unique ways to give the experience of travel Streets Insurance M any people have a passion for traveling. Whether a traveler can’t resist sleeping under the stars at a local campsite or refuse the call of a bustling city overseas, travel beckons people from all walks of life. The travel experience is unique, and it’s an experience that holiday shoppers can provide for their loved ones who can’t wait to dust off their passports or simply get in their cars and drive to a favorite destination near or far. • Airline miles: The cost of airline tickets can be prohibitive and has deterred many a wouldbe traveler from visiting a dream destination. However, holiday shoppers with ample airline miles on their credit cards may be able to transfer those miles to a loved one. Such a transfer can dramatically reduce the cost of an airline ticket, opening the door to a wonderful travel experience for a friend or family member who otherwise might
not be able to afford a trip. Rules about transferring miles vary depending on the airline, and transfer fees may apply. But this is a unique way to give the gift of travel. • Gas card: Of course, flying is not the only way to get from point A to point B. The gift of free gasoline can help road warriors explore their passion for the open road without breaking the bank. Gas prices tend to rise
during spring and summer, so make sure gift cards purchased during the holiday season won’t expire before the weather warms up. • Camera: Many people feel the experience of travel is best documented through photography. A brand new camera that can create better photos than a typical smartphone camera can help travelers more effectively document their trips while cre-
ating vivid memories they can enjoy for the rest of their lives. • Ancestry kit: While an ancestry kit might not qualify as a traditional experiential gift, knowing one’s ancestry might open doors to future travels. For example, many countries’ citizenship rules allow people born overseas to apply for citizenship if they have a relative, such as a grandparent, who was born in the country. Earning foreign citizenship and ultimately obtaining a foreign passport can simplify overseas travel by helping them avoid long lines at customs. That can inspire more people to travel overseas. In addition, people often learn new and surprising things about their ancestry after submitting ancestry kits, which can prompt trips to destinations people otherwise may never have considered. The experience of travel can make for a great gift that recipients may cherish for the rest of their lives.
