OREGON DUNES TRIATHLON & DUATHLON Saturday, May 13 • Woahink Lake & Honeyman State Park • Dunes City, Ore.
O
n behalf of the City of Dunes City, Ore., and Best in the West Events, I would like to welcome everyone to the fifth annual Oregon Dunes Triathlon and Duathlon, sponsored by Three Rivers Casino Resort. This USAT-sanctioned event is organized by the USAT-certified race director Blair Bronson, owner of Best in the West Events, and is hosted by Dunes City. What does USAT mean? USA Triathlon is the national governing body for the sports of triathlon, duathlon, winter triathlon and aquathlon in the United States. USA Triathlon provides rules, guidance and governance to set the standard for safe and fair multi-sport races. Olympic hopefuls can only count their times at USAT-sanctioned events to qualify for the Olympic
team. This is the fourth year of this evergrowing iconic event that sees its athletes swimming in the clear waters of Woahink Lake, biking through the rolling hills of Dunes City and Lane County, and running through the serene beauty of Honeyman State Park. The finish line is at the top of the dunes by Cleawox Lake. We thank all of our sponsors, including Three Rivers Casino Resort, PeaceHealth Medical Group, the City of Florence, KCST Radio, Darlings Marina and RV Resort, the Bridgewater Fish House and Zebra Bar, and Old Town Inn and River House for their continued support of this popular event. We also extend our thanks to all our community sponsors for their support as well. Lastly, we express our sincere grati-
tude to the many, many volunteers who have stepped forward to help out. We couldn’t do it without you! That’s why this year, in addition to the T-shirt each volunteer receives, we will be putting all your names into a hat and drawing winners of various raffle items that have been donated by some of our community sponsors. To date, we are well above lastyear’s registration numbers for this time and we expect we just may exceed the magic 300 athletes number. I encourage the entire communities of Dunes City and Florence to come out and cheer on the participants and maybe, just maybe, meet a prospective member of the U.S. Olympic Team! Rebecca Ruede Dunes City Mayor
Oregon Dunes Triathlon & Duathlon would like people to use caution driving on Canary and Clear Lake roads between 8 a.m. and noon on Saturday, May 13, as bicylists will be navigating the race course at that time. GOLD LEVEL SPONSORS

VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED D unes City and Best in the West Events appreciate the support of volunteers who make this event possible and successful. Volunteers play a vital support role for all of the participating athletes by providing encouragement and hospitality — many of the athletes have returned to the Tri/Du each year because they appreciate our enthusiastic volunteers. It’s not too late to volunteer. No experience is required and everyone is welcome, including youth and high school groups. Volunteers are needed between about 6 a.m. and 1 p.m. on race day, Saturday, May 13.
If you have a few hours to spare and want to be part of this fun and exciting event, call Dunes City Hall at 541-997-3338 to register as a volunteer or attend one of the volunteer orientation meetings. Dunes City will host two volunteer orientation meetings at Dunes City
Hall on Wednesday, May 10. The first meeting is at 4:30 p.m. and the second at 5:30 p.m. During the meetings, Best in the West Events organizers will provide race day assignments, instructions, safety equipment and free souvenir T-shirts so that on race day volunteers will know where to be and at what time. Best in the West will award a $250 donation to the organization that provides the most volunteers. The organization can be a civic club, athletic club, homeowners association or similar type of group. If your group has the most volunteers present on race day, your group will be rewarded with a $250 check.
Good Luck to all that are participating in the Your Neighborhood Restaurant Ian & Naomi Ciccarelli

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS SWIM SECTION Woahink Lake is one of the Oregon coast’s beautiful lakes offering great water quality to swim in. Although early in the year, this shallow coastal lake warms up quick. With good weather we may see water temperatures reaching into the 60s. Wetsuits are highly recommended and may be required, depending on weather and lake conditions.

The Sprint Bike is an out and back with a small loop on the end before heading back to the park. The Olympic Bike follows the sprint course for the first 9 miles before heading to a second out and back section — venturing further out into the countryside’s winding roads while conquering the hills. At mile 16.6, there is a bike aid station to refuel before you begin the descent and return to the park. The course has rolling hills and great views, making for a tough yet exciting ride.
Sprint Bike is 10.5 miles and Olympic Bike is 24.8 miles. RUN SECTION After a quick cross county loop around East Woahink, you’ll tuck into the trails of Jessie M. Honeyman State Park,
