Welcome to FLORENCE
HECETA HEAD LIGHTHOUSE
Situated half way along the spectacular Oregon coast, Florence offers a taste of everything that makes the region grand — from the serenity of its forests and sparkling lakes to the magnificent mountains of sand and the historic Old Town. ANY TIME OF YEAR a trip to Florence means opportunities to fish rivers, lakes and ocean, and enjoy every water sport known to mankind; hike beach and mountain trails; dash up and over giant sand dunes; stroll along the Port of Siuslaw boardwalk and through Bay Street shops in Old Town; play a round of golf or a game of chance at the local casino; or tuck away in a beach-side cottage.
In summer the weather is warm and mild. By fall, those “in the know” head for the coast because the sun is out and the crowds aren’t. In winter, storm watchers and beachcombers know the best places around town for a secret holiday. Florence consistently ranks as one of the best places in the nation to retire, and it’s the warm sense of community — amid the slew of outdoor activities, friendly shops and
the multitude of complete service providers — that invites people to return again and again, many of whom settle into a new home or into retirement. Whether you’re a visitor or have made the choice to make Florence your home, you’ll always find something new to do here. Discover Florence and all that it has to offer in the 2014-15 Midcoast Wave Visitors Guide.

EXPLORE HISTORIC OLD TOWN
SIUSLAW RIVER WATERFRONT
Tucked under the famed Siuslaw River Bridge is the heart of Florence — Historic Old Town. Take a stroll along the riverside sidewalks and boardwalk for a glimpse of the town that sprung up here in the late 1800s.
FLORENCE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Visitors Center sits atop the entrance to Old Town at 290 Highway 101. Stop by for information about every facet of this area.
FOR A COOL BREAK, step into the Old Town pocket park and gazebo and relax while taking in views of the lively Siuslaw River.
A UNIQUE VARIETY OF SHOPS, galleries and restaurants line Bay Street and the side streets, where some offer patio or sidewalk seating. Motels, bed-andbreakfast inns and other vacation rentals provide comfortable access to the downtown area.
THE CITY’S BELOVED LANDMARK, the Siuslaw River Bridge, was designed by Oregon’s most famous engineer, Conde McCullough, and opened for traffic in 1936. The art deco structure changed the face of the Florence area, its economy and its residents’ ability to travel and transport.

Preserving history... FOR A RICH HISTORY of the area, visit the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum, located in the renovated 1905 schoolhouse, later known as the Callison building, on Maple Street.
MANY OF THE POPULAR establishments in Old Town have preserved their early 1900’s architecture. Several historic buildings are marked with signs explaining their heritage. For instance, the Kyle Building, now the Bridgewater Restaurant, was the first mercantile here built in 1901.
VISITORS SEEKING A PEACEFUL STROLL or a place to observe the local waterfront should head for the Port of Siuslaw boardwalk in Old Town. Overlooking the commercial moorage basin, the boardwalk offers the perfect spot for gazing out over the Siuslaw River as well as viewing the port’s daily operations.
Honoring our veterans Florence pays tribute to local service men and women. Each year the town shows gratitude for the service and sacrifice of our armed forces, both active duty and veterans, at the annual Veterans Day Parade, held rain or shine on Nov. 11 in Old Town. Military vehicles, bands, floats, marching groups and many others participate. Veteran’s Memorial Park, the site of the annual Memorial Day observance ceremony, honors past military members with a dedicated memorial wall. The park sits near the intersection of Bay and Kingwood streets along the Siuslaw River. Finishing touches are being made to the Oregon Coast Military Heritage Museum, which will provide education about the military as well as display veterans’ artifacts and memorabilia from their service. The museum, on Kingwood Street near the Florence Municipal Airport, is tentatively set to open later this year.

WHALE WATCHING
SEA LION CAVES TURNOUT
Thousands of visitors and locals head for the coastal region at least twice a year, especially during Whale Watching Weeks, with the hope of catching sight of gray whales migrating at any of the 24 whale watching sites on the Oregon coast. 2014-15 Whale Watching Weeks Winter: Dec. 27-31, 2014 Spring: March 21-28, 2015 POPULAR WHALE-WATCHING SITES near Florence include the Sea Lion Caves turnout and the Cape Perpetua area, where hundreds of sightings are reported each year. Gray whales are the predominant whales observed along the coast. The blow is often the first visible part of a whale, but gray whales can often be seen rolling out of the water or fluking. Trained volunteers are available to assist visitors at the 24 sites from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the designated weeks, a good time of day for whale sightings. Be sure to bring binoculars and dress for the weather. Calmer days and higher locations are best for viewing.

VIEW FROM SEA LION CAVES
Traveling the Oregon coast constitutes a vacation in itself, with many “must see” coastal landmarks just off Highway 101, a designated National Scenic Byway. All the following attractions are accessible from this road.
FIRST SIGHT OF HECETA HEAD LIGHTHOUSE means pull over and take in the view of the landmark that dates to the 1890s. The Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint — 12 miles north of Florence — offers a great place to picnic, play in the sand and hike the upward route to the circa-1894 lighthouse, where the ocean views are magnificent. Tours of the lighthouse are available, and the Queen Anne-style assistant keeper’s house serves as a bed-and-breakfast inn.
ATTRACTING NEARLY 150,000 TOURISTS each year, Sea Lion Caves — the world’s largest sea cave — has taken visitors “up close and personal” with the Steller sea lions that inhabit the area, about 11 miles north of Florence, for more than 80 years. Sea lions can usually be seen on any given day. MIDCOAST WAVE 2014-15

Out on the water...
WOAHINK LAKE IS POPULAR FOR FISHING, water skiing, boating, canoeing and kayaking. One of the best access points is a day-use area on the northeast shore and the east side of the highway, which can be reached from Canary Road. There are paved boat ramps, picnic areas, large grassy sections and a public swimming area.
SILTCOOS LAKE IS THE LARGEST LAKE on the Oregon coast, just six miles south of Florence. There are several public marina access points, including a boat ramp in Westlake that offers yearlong free boat launching. Nearby is the start of a canoe and kayak trail, as well as ample parking, public restrooms, picnic tables and a dock that provides a good birdwatching spot.

OUTDOORS
FISHING AT CLEAWOX LAKE
Crazy about crabs and clams? How about fish? Join the crowd, which often flocks to Florence to harvest abundant crops of these freshwater creatures. Follow these tips to make sure you get the most from the coast.
CLAM ONLY AT “MINUS” TIDE, which is when the surf recedes farther than normal. Though most clams prefer to live as far as three miles offshore, those that live along the shoreline are easiest to reach one hour before and after minus tides. The best time for digging is between 7 a.m. and noon, midJune through early July. From early July to mid-July, you’ll have better luck between 5 and 11 a.m. Clams are usually within two feet of the surface. A fast digger can usually reach them before they burrow away. Use a spade and walk along the shallow surf. Look for pencilsized holes in the sand. Clamming season ends in mid-July and doesn’t reopen until late September.
RECREATIONAL CRABBERS ARE ALLOWED three pots each, which are generally checked every 15 minutes. Florence is one of many spots along the Pacific shoreline that the Dungeness call home. Crab pots submerged in the jetty channel are attached to buoys in order to mark locations and ownership. Bait is usually herring, squid, chicken or turkey, which quickly attract the bottom-dwelling crab. Only males meeting the required length of 5-3/4 inches or larger can be kept; all females are returned to the sea, ensuring that the reproductive cycle continues. One hour before or after high tide is the best time to drop your pots in the water.
Remember: Anyone age 14 and older harvesting shellfish — clams, crab, mussels, abalone, oysters, piddocks, shrimp or scallops — must have a recreational shellfish license. Licenses can be purchased anywhere angling or hunting equipment is sold. MIDCOAST WAVE 2014-15

Gone fishin’... POPULAR FISHING SPOTS in the Florence area include lakes north of town (Alder, Dune, Mercer, Munsel and Sutton) and south (Carter, Cleawox, Loon, Siltcoos and Woahink) in addition to the Siuslaw River. Many of these fishing spots provide docks and boat ramps. Such fish as largemouth bass, rainbow trout and coho salmon are common catches. CLEAWOX LAKE
FREE AS A
BIRD Florence areas popular for birdwatching. There are hundreds of spots along the Oregon coast that have become popular with birdwatchers. In fact, more than 18 million people visit the coast annually just to exercise this hobby. In the South Jetty area, birdwatchers in the know favor driving into the third parking lot, where they have a good view of the marsh. Shorebirds can be spotted past the foredunes to the beach or on the tidal flats. Both Cleawox and Woahink lakes provide freshwater and mature forests for diverse species. All the major attractions to the north, Cape Perpetua and Sea Lion Caves in particular, are also good viewing points. To the east, head for the PAWN Trail and Sweet Creek Falls. A leisurely drive along the Siuslaw River, following Highway 126, allows views of a surprising number of birds, big and small, eagles to finches. At Siltcoos Lake, winter and summer provide views of an abundance of ducks and coots. Also in the Siltcoos area, birders suggest checking out the Waxmyrtle Trail. Another spot for watchers is Lagoon Campground. Look overhead and you might spot a bald eagle or osprey.
