1ONTOLOGICAL ORDER Data Center on Schuykill River , Philadelphia // Partner: Shan Li

Instructor: Danielle Willems|willems@maetadesign.com

Nominated in Pressing Matter 10

Ontological order rethink what is the extra meaning of data center in new geration. For us, data is not only information but also information about the human civilization. The fundamental starting idea of our design is to think about what is the physical form of data in the non-digital world and how should it be hosted in a way that could generate unique space for people to experience. If we see the repetitive data servers as part, then by implementing a certain order, even repetitive parts could form a complex whole. Also incorporating with water treatment facility, we challenge the conventionality that machinery and service space is always hidden in the least favorite space, the goal of our project is to design a building facilitate not only human but machines. figures: cenotaphs (above) views from basemen data storage render (right)

Ontological order is located on the schuykill river, which is also near Philadelphia Museum of Art and the hIstoric Site , Fairmount Water Work. Looking back the history of the site, the water work serves as a machine to power the city and the musuem is another critial architecture symbolize the city. In such a critical site, the project try to keep the momumental feeling as well as how the city uses the water resources. Therefore, a canal is created in the site to maxmize the river resourse and cooling down the data center. figures: site analysis & site plan (above) water flow study (left above) massing development (left botom) 6

2Circulation as Life High-rise Mixed-use Tower in Hongkong // Individual Work Instructor: Jose Angel Hidalgo Arellno| Philip Fung

The studio aims to respond to the complex paradoxes between density, verticality, and community. In addition, the unique of Hong Kong typology, the programming in the building and the evolution of the housing typology are also the questions that need to deal with the project. Therefore, starting from the analysis of the typology, I try to create circulation to overcome the typography in the site and to build the relationship with the two important spots near the site. In the upper level of community, different typologies are designed in cater to varied target groups and various programs are added in the building to increase activities in the community. figures: study model (above) Project Model (right)

Typical Living Unit Plan

Single Apartment

Family Apartment Hong Kong is a high density city, where everyone have minimum size of apartment for living. As a result of expensive property price, people realy can afford large apartment. The units designed above try to rethink how people can have a good life even in a small apartment. Single and family type are provided for different reason.

Ground Floor Plan Because of the rareity of the land, there are not much space in the home. Therefore, the project try to create more common space outside as a public ground which encourage citizens to come and use. Moreover, it is also used as cirlulation spaces , so that one place can achieve two functions.

DISTRIBU

HAMILTON

This Green City serves as a green connection between the San Gabriel Mountains and Long Beach along the existing San Gabriel River Trail and aims to transform the previously owned mining pits to public parks that will become the 4th largest park in LA. The overall building footprint counts only 1/8 of the total green space. By combining natural and artificial landscapes, layering complex typographical features and inserting different public programs, the project offers a unique park experience with four different park types for the adjacent communities and LA. In the periphery, each park’s boundary is shaped by the formal languages of the pits and the dam. The existing urban fabrics continue towards the parks to form new city centers along the edges. The central density zone is then defined by the four pockets of greens and continues the city grid of Baldwin Park. In this way, the design reintroduces nature to urban life and offers opportunities for people to explore the beauty of the natural scenery and recreational activities through just a short walking distance. figures: cenotaphs (above) views from basemen data storage render (right)

Site Condition In total there are 18 mines within the City of Irwindale’s extents with more in its neighboring cities dotted along the San Gabriel foothills. Today, Irwindale finds itself in dismay; the scarification of the mining sites once pilfered for the establishment of the county’s road and highway networks now presents a complex urban problem for the city. Since the majority of the mines have met their mining thresholds, Los Angeles County has decided to close down operations by 2030. Pits liat 1. United Rock #3 2. United Rock #2 3. United Rock #1 4. 4DESERT LINE Soloar facility_Landfill_Land Art, Nevada //Partner: Shan Li Instructor: Ferda Kolatan fk@su11.com

figures: cenotaphs (above) views from basemen data storage render (right)

40

Desert line is a hybrid of plastic waste landfill and processing

center powered by solar power. The initial idea was driven by the unusual straight line in the desert such as striation of the rock layer and the horizon view of flat plateau, which to some extent, challenge the default impression of natural imagery. Our objective is to explore the ambiguity between machinery and natural desert landscape. After processing, sorting out same color of unrecyclable plastic, we reinsert them back into the striation and manipulate the color accordingly. In this way, our project created a different aesthetic in desert, offering visitors a unique visual experience from multiple viewing points. Further inspired by the land art from Christo and Jeanne Claude, solar textile is used to veil and unveil the desertscape. The sea-like shing figure that contrast with the desert was created to explore the new technical sublime described by David Nye.

Capsule Collect is a visualization of community viewpoints. It is

an engagement tool that collects input directly from residents and personal stories of their experiences in the neighborhood. Envisioned as a tool for the city to deploy across multiple communities, this pop-up translates constituent opinions into quantifiable data and a verbal history of the city. Capsule Collect is intended to collect polling and personal histories from various Philadelphia neighborhoods in an effort to create a better database for development strategies. Connected to a webbased application, the data collected from this project is open to the public. City officials, planners, designers, or anyone just looking to learn more about their neighborhood has access to this unfiltered information. The questions asked at this pop-up are only an example, but represent some of the questions we had about the Callowhill / Earaserhood / North Chinatown area. These can evolve as the pop-up moves to different neighborhoods with different issues.

8OBLIQUE SLIPPAGE Installation Model in Penn Museum Courtyard // Instructor: Maya Alam

Partner: Nickolas Houser, Yuxuan Xiong, Richard Rodriquez

Through aggregationn of voxels at a pseudo-oblique angle, the sculpture engages the visitors of the stoner courtyart by generating multiple readings at different angles. A spectrum if colored pixels is applied to the surface of the sculpture and allowed to drip down along its cantilivered arm. Digitally frabricated copied of the Penn Museum's collection were placed deliberately to induce movement, such that one has to travel around the sculpture to develop an understand of the exhibited artefacets. Rules applied to create rigor and multiple readings, through the use of elements that can be arranged in a number of ways to create spatial interaction and provide moments of juxtaposition in texture. figures: axon (above) physical model (middle) drawings (right)
