Welcome
Welc me
from the Chambers
On behalf of our communities, from Estancia on the southeast, to Cedar Crest on the northwest, with Moriarty, Edgewood, and Tijeras in between, welcome to Enchantment magazine! In publishing this directory and visitor guide for our three chambers of commerce, our goal is to show you what we have to offer. We are so pleased that you are interested in visiting us or relocating to one of our communities. Enchantment will give you a glimpse into this wonderful place we call home. From the Sandia-Manzano Mountains through Tijeras Canyon and out to the Estancia Valley, our communities are perfectly situated: far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the metro Albuquerque and Santa Fe areas to enjoy a calmer life while still being close enough to enjoy the amenities offered in the cities. The combination of low crime rates, great education systems, beautiful parks and abundant recreation programs equal a quality of life that can’t be beat! We hope that you will visit the Tinker Town Museum, the Wildlife West Nature Park, the Single Action Shooting Society, the Soaring Museum, Schwabech Farm, and the Sierra Blanca Brewery, or any of our other attractions. You can read about these attractions here in Enchantment magazine. We also encourage you to travel the Historic Route 66 by taking State Highway 333 from Moriarty through Edgewood to Tijeras; you can start by reading about this legendary road here in our guide. It is a piece of Americana that you’ll not soon forget. Whether you come for the weekend or come to stay, we hope you enjoy your time in our communities. Please don’t forget to check out our combined business directory in the back of this guide. Give them your business…they’re the ones that support our communities and make our piece of the Land of Enchantment a great place to live! Edgewood and Estancia History
Edgewood HISTORY Homesteaders
moving
into
the
American West created the initial
settlements that grew into what is now the town of Edgewood. Taking advantage of the federal Homestead Act, pioneer families obtained land claims and began farming and ranching in the Edgewood area during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Several of the original families that homesteaded here still have family roots here in Edgewood.
Edgewood was founded by a group of southern Santa Fe county residents and landowners. After the incorporation of the town of the town in 1999, large areas of land were annexed. Since its incorporation in 1999, Edgewood has grown into a wonderful small town. Edgewood, NM offers its residents a wonderful blend of rural life with some of the modern conveniences bigger cities offer. sea level in the middle of beautiful Estancia Valley. Last year the town celebrated its 100th anniversary. Throughout the last century, Estancia has been a favorite resting point for travelers from all over the country. In the early 1900s the town was home to the New Mexico Central Railway which contributed greatly to the town’s expansion, commercial development and attracted many new small businesses. Today the area has a lot to offer so be sure to come and visit us soon!

Moriarty History
Moriarty History
Moriarty HISTORY
The City of Moriarty was named after Michael Timothy Moriarty and his family who were the first family to settle in the area in 1887. When they arrived there were no railroads, no towns, and very few settlers in the Estancia Valley. The area was suited for cattle grazing, and Michael Moriarty became one of the many ranchers in central New Mexico.
In 1903, a post office was established with Michael Moriarty as the first postmaster. Before the railroad was built, the mail was brought to Moriarty by a horseback rider from Chilili. The Santa Fe Central Railroad built a line in this area in 1903; and in 1908, the line became the New Mexico Central Railroad. The railroad was built between the communities of Kennedy (southeast of Santa Fe) and Torrance, in southeastern Torrance County: passing though Stanley, Moriarty, Estancia, Willard, Progresso, and Cedarvale. This new passenger and freight line was opened to provide connections between Santa Fe and El Paso, and Santa Fe and Chicago via connecting lines at Torrance. Following the arrival of the railroad, a rush In 1937 Route 66 of homesteaders from Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Iowa cut the land into farms and fields. was re-routed to The railroad company built a depot, opened a telegraph office, and established a town. The NM Highway 6 in Moriarty Depot soon became the center attraction in the community.
the Rio Grande In 1906, Mr. Moriarty and Pete Vigil were chosen to obtain material, money and labor to build a school house. The railroad company donated land on which to construct the building. When valley and passed the school was built in 1907, it also served as the center for church activities. The commercial through Morarty. buildings of the original town of Moriarty were located on present-day Center Avenue. Many of the original buildings were destroyed by fire in the mid-1920’s. In 1926, Route 66 was formed by the Federal Highway Act. Originally, Route 66 was located just west of Santa Rosa with a route turning north toward Santa Fe. However, in 1937, Route 66 was re-routed to NM Highway 6 in the Rio Grande valley and passed through Moriarty. In the early 1930’s, as a result of the drought, farmers were forced to leave Moriarty and the Estancia Valley. However, a new community named Buford, for Buford Crossley, was built around the intersection of U.S. Highway (Route) 66 and State Highway 41, approximately one mile north of the original town site of Moriarty. Both areas were combined into the City of Moriarty in 1953 when the City was incorporated. Eventually, tourist traffic and the development of irrigated farms led to the rejuvenated growth of this community. In the 1960’s, Route 66 was superseded by Interstate 40. Two I-40 interchanges were completed for Moriarty in the 1970’s, resulting in greater accessibility and the potential for increased growth.

The Single-Action Shooters’ Society •SASS HISTORY• While Cowboy Action Shooting may find its roots in the history of the Old West, it has existed as an organized form of competitive shooting since 1981. In the beginning, Cowboy Action matches were held at a shooting rage in Coto de Caza, California. In 1982, the first End of Trails event was held, attended by sixtyfive competitors. However, it wouldn’t be until 1987 that The Single Action Shooters Society became an official organization. Since then, Cowboy Action Shooting has become the fastest growing form of competitive shooting sport in the United States and counts 18 countries with active cowboy shooting events.
•BRINGING THE OLD WEST TO LIFE• The biggest difference between SASS and other forms of competitive shooting are the requirements that every competitor not only have an alias appropriate for the 1800’s, but must also dress in a period-correct costume. The firearms of Cowboy Action Shooting are the same as those used to win the west. Single-action revolvers, lever-action rifles, and double-barrelled shotguns are the tools of the trade. Each competition is broken into several stages or “scenarios” that are based on famous incidents in western history or scenes from film. The competitor must navigate each scenario, engaging steel targets with pistols, rifle, and shotgun. SASS competitors can register in a number of different divisions depending their

preferred mode of dress, firearm handling method, and whether or not the guns use black powder or cartridge ammunition. SASS mounted shooting events combine the firearms of the old west with horseback riding skill. Competitors must navigate a scenario while breaking balloon targets with blank-loaded guns.
mandatory. Sunglasses are allowed. While not required, spectators are encouraged to get into the spirit of event, and dress in western-style clothing. However, non-competitors are not allowed to carry firearms. For more information about SASS, or for a list of scheduled events: www.sassnet.com
•NEW SASS HEADQUARTERS• In 2004, SASS headquarters were moved to Edgewood, NM. The move afforded the organization much opportunity, allowing for an expansion to a picturesque location encompassing 480 acres, 17 shooting bays, equestrian facilities, and all of the support facilities to host and run largescale western events.
•END OF TRAIL• The biggest Cowboy Action match in the world is the annual End of Trail World Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting and Wild West Jubilee. This event is the whole shooting match and then some! In addition to the competition, which draws over 2,000 authentically-dressed competitors, there are many other activities to take part in and watch, including costume contests covering all aspects of Western garb from gunfighters to saloon girls, mounted shooting, chuck wagon cooking competitions, cowboy music and poetry, trick roping, stunt shows and skits, and historical re-enactments. In 2010, the World Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting and Wild West Jubilee will be held June 21 - 27. The event is open to the public, however, in order to watch any of the shooting events, eye and ear protection are

The legendary US Route 66 was one of the original highways in the US Highway System. Established on November 11, 1926, it originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, before ending at Los Angeles, encompassing a total of 2,448 miles. It was recognized in popular culture by both a hit song performed by Nat King Cole and the Route 66 television show in the 1960s. More recently, the 2006 Disney/Pixar film Cars featured US 66. Right after Route 66 was commissioned, it was known as The Great Diagonal Way because the Chicago-to-Oklahoma City stretch ran northeast to southwest. Later, Route 66 was advertised by the US Highway 66 Association as The Main Street of America. In the John Steinbeck novel The Grapes of Wrath, the highway is called The Mother Road, its prevailing title today. Lastly, Route 66 was unofficially named The Will Rogers Highway by the US Highway 66 Association in 1952, although, twelve years previously, a sign along the road with that name appeared in the film version of The Grapes of Wrath, which was released in 1940. A plaque dedicating the highway to Will Rogers is still located in Santa Monica, California. Before a nationwide network of numbered highways was adopted by the states, named auto trails were marked by private organizations. Parts of three of these trails became Route 66: the Lone Star Route from Chicago to St. Louis, the Ozark Trails system’s Postal Highway from St. Louis to just south
18
of Las Vegas, New Mexico, and the National Old Trails Road from there to Los Angeles. In 1937, Route 66 in New Mexico was re-routed through Moriarty, Edgewood, and Tijeras, New Mexico, shortly before it was paved in 1938. Traffic grew on the highway because much of the h i g h w a y was essentially flat and this made the highway a popular truck route. The Dust Bowl of the 1930s saw many farming families heading west for agricultural jobs in California. Route 66 became the main path of travel for these people. And, during the Depression, the commerce gave some relief to communities located on the highway. The route passed through numerous small towns, and with the growing traffic on the highway, helped create the rise of mom-andpop businesses, such as service stations, restaurants, and motor courts, all readily accessible to passing motorists. In the 1950s, Route 66 became the main highway for vacationers heading to Los Angeles. The road passed through the Painted Desert and near the Grand Canyon. Meteor Crater in Arizona was another popular stop. This sharp increase in tourism gave rise to a burgeoning trade in all manner of roadside attractions, including teepee-shaped motels, frozen custard stands, Indian curio shops, and reptile farms. It also marked the birth of the fast-food industry: Red’s Giant Hamburgers in Springfield, Missouri, site of the first drivethrough restaurant, and the first McDonald’s in San Bernardino, California. Changes like these to the landscape further cemented 66’s reputation as a near-perfect microcosm of the culture of America, now linked by the automobile.
The beginning of the end for Route 66 came in 1956 with the signing of the Interstate Highway Act by President Dwight Eisenhower who was influenced by his experiences in 1919 as a young Army officer crossing the country in a truck convoy and by his appreciation during WWII of the German Autobahn network. In New Mexico, as in most other states, rural sections of I-40 were to be constructed first, with bypasses around cities to come later. However, some business and civic leaders in cities along US 66 were completely opposed to bypassing, fearing loss of business and tax revenues. In 1963, the New Mexico Legislature enacted a ban on the construction of interstate bypasses around cities. This legislation was short-lived, however, due to pressures from Washington and threat of loss of federal highway funds, so it was rescinded by 1965. In 1964, Tucumcari and San Jon became the first cities in New Mexico to work out an agreement with state and federal officials in determining the locations of their I-40 bypasses as close to their business areas as possible in order to permit easy access for highway travelers to their localities. Other cities soon fell in line including Santa Rosa, Moriarty, Grants and Gallup. US 66 was officially removed from the United States Highway System on June 27, 1985 after it was decided the route had been completely replaced by the Interstate Highway System. With the decommissioning of US 66, no single interstate route was designated to replace it.
Interstate 55 covered the section from Chicago to St. Louis; Interstate 44 carried the traffic on to Oklahoma City; Interstate 40 took the largest chunk, replacing 66 to Barstow, California; Interstate 15 took over for the route to San Bernardino; and Interstate 210 and State Route 2 or Interstate 10 carried Route 66’s traffic across the Los Angeles metro area to Santa Monica. When the highway was decommissioned, the route became a business loop for the interstate within many cities. Some sections became state roads, local roads, private drives, or were abandoned completely. Although it is no longer possible to drive Route 66 uninterrupted all the way from Chicago to Los Angeles, much of the original route and alternate alignments are still drivable with careful planning. In 1999 the National Route 66 Preservation Bill was signed into law by President Bill Clinton, which provided matching fund grants for preserving and restoring the historic features along the route. As the popularity and mythical stature of Route 66 has continued to grow, demands have begun to mount to improve signage, return Route 66 to road atlases and revive its status as a continuous routing. Along these lines Route 66 has been established as a National Scenic Byway in several states, including New Mexico. Another move is also afoot that aims to reinstate Route 66 as an official US Route.

oss Ward was born to paint, carve and tinker. As a boy growing up in the Midwest, he was captivated by the tiny villages, farms and circuses created by “spare time carvers.” His own miniature world began with circus figures carved while in junior high school - now on display at the museum. He began carving the first figures for the turn-ofthe-century general store in 1962. Ross carved and built his folk art environment as a hobby for most of his adult life but he was even more prolific in his artistic endeavors of painting, etching, drawing and sculpture. A self-taught artist, he was a show painter for carnivals for over 30 years, traveling the country painting on all the major carnival shows and in winter quarters from Texas to Florida.
Far more than an impressive collection of miniatures and memorabilia of all kinds, Tinkertown is a living testimonial to Ross Ward’s belief in self determination and independence. It is evidence of his singular pursuit of creating a true folk art environment in the style of Grandma Prisby’s Bottle Village in California and Reverend Howard Finster’s Paradise Garden in Georgia. It has grown from a one-room museum welcoming 943 visitors in 1983 to a roadside attraction hosting over 20,000 visitors in 2004. In February of 1998, at age 57, Ross was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and passed away November 13, 2002. The Ward family continues his legacy by maintaining and running Tinkertown in his memory. This season is Tinkertown’s 21st and something is always happening at the museum. In the spirit of Ross’ adage: “The show must go on!”.

Welcome to
Wildlife West
W
ildlife West Nature Park, a wildlife preserve and "enhanced zoo," is located just 20 minutes west of Albuquerque, New Mexico in nearby Edgewood. Home of rescued native wildlife and a hot spot for many musical events during the summer season, this beautiful animal preserve is home to some 24 species including endangered Mexican gray wolves. Stretched across 122 acres, the park’s design recreates the natural habitat of its occupants and is an exciting place for the whole family. One of the park’s main goals is to bring education to the public without disturbing the surrounding habitats. Each exhibit is carefully organized to serve a dual purpose: provide a great opportunity for visitors to observe the animals in their natural setting and keep its residents safe, happy and healthy. Complete with one of the area’s best amphitheaters, the park hosts a variety of musical events attracting various artists from all over the country. The bluegrass festivals, western music and play performances are not the only
exciting events that take place on regular basis. Other popular regular attractions include sunset barbecue, chuckwagon dinners, hayrides, workshops, junior zookeeper camps and much more! The Wildlife West Nature Park is an important part of the local community and has been honored by Artists for Wildlife West, a group of individuals who have donated a beautiful billboard-size mosaic for the park’s front entrance. We invite you to come visit us and experience the gifts of nature Wildlife West Nature Park has to offer. For admission and hours of operation please visit: www.wildifewest.org or call 505.281.7655 • 877.981.WILD We hope to see you soon!
