Week One

Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.

According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)

Diagram is different from signs and symbols in the way that signs and symbols can represent the ‘qualities of dynamic objects’. For example, an icon can be a representation of the material, functions, qualities or properties of the particular objects. While diagram does not represent dynamic objects or mediate between physical constructs and concepts. It can be relates to a space, a frame or a specific location. It provides more information in the process of developing the outcome. Since it is not limited by the origin and the end, it is able to generate more possibilities for what are going to produce.

Perspective

The Serpentine Pavilion which was designed by Toyo Ito appereared to use quiet complex and random pattern to construct, it actually derived from a very simple geomerty shape square which is expanded and rotated many times. The use of glazing materials in the construction of the building actually allows more natural lights to get inside the space, which is quite environmental friendly.

Week Two

Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discuss how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)

Acocording to Herzberger, if design is extreme in its functionality, it will also limits its utility for people. In other words, visitors do not have choice to provide their own behaving. The Serpentine Pavilion which is designed by Toyo Ito is actually a good design which is not extremely functional. Firstly, the design of the four doorways are quite effective for people to move around. The movable chairs and tables inside the sapce allow people to use the space in a more effective way. For example, people can move the chairs and tables in the shade easily. The hollowed-out or the in-between sapce actually provides a comfortable place for vistors to lean on to have a rest or do some reading. People who sit there are also easy to contact with the people inside or outside. It is also a fantastic place for children to squirming through the space. The outside environment is also a public space for people to sit around to enjoy the sunlights.

Week Two

Isometric

Insert title of your Isometric here. The Pavilion appeared to use very complex and random pattern to construct, it actually ferived from a very simple and small square which is continually expanded and rotated. After that, each edged of squares are extended again to form a complex geometric form. Then it was folded in to a cubid. The combination of solids and glazing in the constrcution give a sense of extensibility of interio spaces of the who building. The glazing parts allow more natural light to get inti the space, which is not any more a restrcit cubic interior space. The pavilion has four entrances on each side of the walls, which forms six circulation paths. Visitors can easily get inside from different sides though the stairs. Since the interior space of the pavilion is used as a dinning space, the tables and charis are carefully arranged in the spaces where would not block the circulation paths. However, they can also be moved easily according to teh preferences of visitors. The counter and the bar howerver are fixed along the catercorner, which is quite convinient for people to access. Also, the design of the hollowed-out walls, which is the in-between spaces, in deed could be a semi-private spaces for people to lean on and do tehir own things.

Threshold The threshold of the pavilion is formed by three key parts: solids, glazing and steel structure. The solids actually defines teh outside and interior spaces. The glazing allows more natural lights to get into the interior spaces and gives a sense of extensibility of spaces.

There are totalli four entrances that form the circulation paths. The red arrows which are extended from the centre to the entrances represent the direct pathways of people. The bule dots indicate the density and flows of visitors. As there are two entrances close to the pathways and the nearby parking area, people will prefer to walk through that two entrances. The statice bar and counter which are allocated along the caercorner are convinient for people to access. The second shaded primary circulation space actually shows the numbers of accumulated people as the time goes on. The darker area indicates that people would stay a longer time in that

Appendix

Process

This imge shows the process of tracing the line on teh plan view. The complex patterns of the pavilion indeed comes from the expansion and rotation of a simple squae.

Step 2 is to fold the sides of the square and trun it into a cubic.

7

Appendix Process

Put the lines of solids and struture in different layers in rhino. Use the command ‘extrudecrv’ to extrude the tracing lines of the solids and steel structures.

8

Appendix

Process

Adding the details for the buildings, i.e: stairs, handrails and locations of bar and counters.

Export the basement from rhino to Illustrator. Trace the details of the interior designs such as some small lawns. Also add pathways along the buildings, which are determinant to the ciculation of people.
