Castle Peak in HK is a delineated firing range for military. However, not only citizens occupied the area authorized to PLA (People’s Liberation Army) for their recreational uses, the 3 stakeholders (PLA, residents, hikers) as a whole made severe damage to the land. Thus, administrators must make the right management decisions. However, what the government has done currently is dissatisfying. Inspired by self-built kiosks on-site, the project aims at promoting a brand new management scheme based on spontaneously made kiosks for the administrators. The new kiosk prototype should be flexible, sustainable, and open for everyone to use.

2010 Expo helped Shanghai claim its transition from an industrial city to an international metropolis. With the slogan better city, better life, countries demonstrated their vision of a better city with their iconic pavilions. However, the site per se did not enjoy the benefits as much as the city. After the Expo, the place was forgotten with most of the pavilions demolished and the vast land left vacant. The inhumane road system and sparse programs form the unfriendly urban fabric. In 2018, when I visited the site again, some changes can be spotted on-site which implied another transition undergoing. New high-rises were rising which reminds me of The Bund. As Hou Tan locates in the new district with relatively less population, will it be another destination of city expansion and become another hub for shanghai city? Will the site inherit the glory of the Expo and become a paragon of a better city? The design takes the vacant land as opportunity to vision a new city typology which is efficient, vibrant and green.

The figure-ground demonstrates how dramatic urban fabric could change in less than a decade. As one of the most proactive governments in the world, China converted this 5km2 industrial shantytown into a large theme park in less than 5 years. However, the decay of the past booming scene was also at an amazing speed. Most of the gigantic structures were demolished by 2015 leaving vast vacant land. Will there be another radical change in the urban fabric in the next 20 years?

Reidentify Shanghai Identity: Juxtaposition of Mega-Structure and Mega-Landscape Discussed all the odds and ends of the design, it is time for us to zoom out and go back to the original question I raised. Can this piece of land redefine the city? I guess the answer will still end up in the Mega things, which form the skyline and leave indelible impressions to all the visitors. My answer to the mega-structure dilemma is not only densifying the place but also endowing it a counterpart: Mega-landscape. After a long run through the hustle and bustle in the city, the running track stemmed out from the residential area will end at the Expo Axis, which is now surrounded by fast-grow forest and metasequoia trees. The mega-structures may seem abandoned laying in the giant wetland bubbles but equipped with its original programs. The axis will remain a shopping mall underneath with wild grass growing above. Similarly, The Chinese Pavilion and Benz Arena will also remain what they were but attain a sense of tranquility. This juxtaposition demonstrates my wish to harmonize nature and urban life as a integrated whole.

Conservation awareness-building under increasing tourism and illegal wildlife trafficking in the Golden Triangle
From land-locked to land-linked, Laos has inevitably become breeding ground for wildlife trafficking. The country is implicated actively engaging in the trafficking not only as a resource country but more as a conduit country from Africa to Asia. Among all the sin cities flourishing in the Golden Triangle, Boten SEZ is one of the most critical with its location at the cross point of the GMS economic corridor and the under-construction China-Lao railway. In this free zone for Chinese tourists, wildlife products are purchased right back to China even without crossing the custom. Being fully controlled by a Chinese developer, Boten is viewing a 10 times tourist boom by 2030. The condition of wildlife trafficking will inevitably deteriorate with the huge interests of both investors and customers.
1,000,000
The project aims at discussing possibilities of slowing down wildlife smuggling through composite wildlife trafficking interventions especially in terms of awareness building. By combining three existing education models, the project designs a comprehensive anti-wildlife trafficking base which is highly cooperative with local villagers. The base is divided into three stages which will be developed in sequence but coexist at last. Three quantified goals have been set as the evaluation criteria for this project to ensure that the project can succeed in mass awareness building while not compromising people’s livelihood with minimum modification on the ground. Even though the project mainly discusses in the aspect of the Lao government, villages’ capacity building and alternative scenarios are especially discussed understanding that the proposed project is not permanent for the uncertainty of attitudes of Chinese developers and the effectiveness of the interventions. Thus a smooth transition from villages to an educational base is envisioned with multiple possible scenarios proposed and discussed. The villagers’ livelihood is also guaranteed to be more resilient after the interventions implemented.

Rest in Green
In Hong Kong, a city with a massive and increasing population but limited land resources, inadequate cemetery space for people’s afterlife has long been a widely-discussed issue. Like most Chinese, Hong Kong people follow the burial custom with formal coffins and graves passing through generations to show respect to the people who passed away. After British people introduced cemetery in the 19th century, dozens of cemetery were built to meet the increasing decease rate. However, new cemeteries are harder to be built due to land shortage and residents’ complaints of traffic and environment. The project prospect future cemetery in Hong Kong in terms of form and function based on analysis and prediction of social/political/environmental factors in the upcoming 50 years in Hong Kong. The design proposes a concept of constant developing cemetery park on borrow lands.
