[DIS]PLAYING THE FIELD
Urban Thesis Research Architecture
The thesis considers the comprehensive socio-ecomonical, programmatic and architectonic issues to set up an unprecedented conversation between the city of Olbia and its port, testing the possibility of a series of architectural intervensions (act as enzyme) in affecting the forming and evolution of the city.

This drawing overlapped the sections of the Tower which sits next to the port, two resolved architectural interventions in the city centre (a furniture workshop and an art school) and the drawing of their territories. The original scales are 1:200 and 1:2000 respectively.
As a testing, the two interventions and their correlated parts in the tower (the yacht service centre and the aerial art gallery) reveal the productive exchange between the city and the port: they respectively supply furniture products and art works to the tower for commodity and exhibition use. The tower, in return attracts tourists as a hotel and an impressive advertisement for the local specificities, providing an opportunity for the tourists to know Olbia (or for citizens to know it better) before and during their engagement with the broad urban/suburban landscape. Further interventions in the tower include a theatre, a restuarant, a mussel processing room and a chapel; and in the city include a water quality monitoring lab and a recycling centre, etc.

Town Centre Redevelopment
XIPU CENTRE URBAN DESIGN
District Design Architecture Conceptual
This is an urban design project bases on the district re-developing plan of the government. An underconstruction high-speed railway station locates in the centre of the district will bring both opportunity and challenge to the site. As a conceptual design, the solution I provide is a multi-level and multifunctional central area that might be able to help the locals in adapting to the new change while keep some of their current pace and life-style.

Site Location This site locates in XipuTwon, Chengdu, Sichuan, which covers an area of about 246350 square metres. The internal roads have been determined by the planning department. To the northeast of the site is a newly founded station of the intercity high-speed rail, which will undoubtedly become the most influential and challenging point of the site.
Current Site Conditions
The emergence of the high-speed rail station will bring the distrcit a series of changes in an expanded time scale: the land price will rise, population will increase around this area, and the local trade and commerice will be boosted as a consequence. These changes will probably in return influence the life-style of the locals (whom are enjoying their cosy and slow life-style) and the urban structure of this district. A multi-functional district centre could provide all the functional needs while be potential when consider the long-term development.

Urban Strategy What is the most appropriate way in organizing urban elements, such as buildings and infrasturcture? I think in a newly-developed central area, each building will try the best to make itself outstanding. Thus encourage free development on the basis of controling some influential factors might be able to bring the district a healthy competition. To be more innovotive, a flyover system which connects the roads, buildings, squares and parks in different levels has been introduced. What I try to test in this project is the concept “Multi-level Town Centre could generate more intersections in-between the urban elements and so that bring more opportunities for the evolution of local life-style.

By organizing different elements in different layers, the function of each element becomes obvious. For instance, towers fulfill most of the functional requirement and act as landmark, the flyover board disperse the crowd and provide a pedestrian precinctand overhead, and basements are used for car parking, etc.

SWELLFUN MUSEUM
Conservation Architecture
A project based on the study of both material and immaterial heritage of the liquor brewing culture. The conversation between the old and the new is the key consideration in strategy making and concept generating.
The Swellfun Museum is an expansion project of the old brewery at the Shuijing Street, Chengdu. In 1999, relic of the bodega of Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasty was discovered under the ground of the brewery. Due to its huge cultural and propagandist value, the owner of the brewery decided to construct a museum around the brewery to propagate the timehonored brand “Swellfun (Shuijingfang) and the culture of their company. The old brewery lies in the middle of the site, occupies an area of 1662 square metres in the 12148 square metres site area.

Architecture Facade Design Structure Details
Aiming to activate the development of a surburban district and trigger its socioeconomic transition, the multi-use high-rise gathers several functions such as a broadcast centre, a library, an archive and a bank. How to mix all these functions coherently in one building and make it attractive/impressive to the public becomes the question we need to answer.

FOLDED GRAY SPACE
Behavior Study Facade Design Conceptual
ACADEMIC DESIGN
The idea of this design comes from the observation and study of the billboards and users' behaviour of the target street. Fold is a simple method in forming shapes and generating gray spaces. When use it in an organized way, it could change the appearance of a street, increase the surface area to hold brands and create spaces for activities.

The Objective Street and Its Surroundings
South Gate of the Southwest Jiaotong University
Objective street
Living quaters of Xipu Town
Recognition area of a pedestrians is relative to the distance between the billboards and him/her. (suppose the horizontal view angle of the pedestrian is 30 to 60 degree) The view field of a pedestrian expands when the distance between he/she and the shop increases. However, the shop becomes less attractive to him/ her because of the increased distance. On the other hand, pedestrians notice the shop on the other side only when they turn their heads. In the night, darkness makes the matters worse. As the result, many pedestrians walk through the street day by day withouth communicating with the shops other than their destinations.
The objective street is located to the south of the Southwest Jiaotong University and to the north of the living quaters of Xipu Town. It is less than 100 metres far from the South Gate of the university. The students and the nearby residents make this surburban street full of vitality. Stores in the street set up billboards to appeal customers. Their competition reflects in the position and scale of the billboards. The disorder of the billboards breaks the integrity of the street’s facade. Due to these realities, how to organize an ordered integral facade and keep the attraction of the billboards at the same time become the keypoint of the design.
