Science and Life: scientific research and how it can teach lessons for life. It will discuss both science and the nonscientific lessons one can learn.

By it’s very nature, the study of science is the study of reinvention. Both historical and current science has stories to inspire and educate.

Biography Alan Hooper describes himself as an architect and teacher.

He leads the BA Architecture programme at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow School of Art. He was born in Govan. Running through his talk is the theme of journeys, particularly his own (he says he is an expert in this) and reflections on the way that all journeys are a form of transformation.

Angela says she spent most of her time at St Joseph’s happily hanging out in the art and drama departments, but somehow ended up working in hedge funds, despite failing Maths spectacularly. The one thing she can add up is the number of years she has spent in formal education: 21 out of the last 28. She will share with you some stories about what she has learned and un-learned along the way.

Chris attended St Columba’s Primary and then St Joseph’s Academy from 1992 – 1998.

He was awarded a first class MSci (Hons) in Chemical Physics from Glasgow University and then a PhD in Plasma Physics from Imperial College London. He carried out postdoctoral research at Ohio State University and then Oxford University. He is now an Advanced Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. He has conducted his research using many of the world’s highest energy laser systems including those in Germany, France, the USA and Japan.

David Ross, Architect

The Transformational Power of Architecture: Architecture is the Mother of the Arts. More than any other, it affects our behaviour, our mood and our sense of ourselves. It is all around us yet constantly requires adapting to changing social, economic and cultural circumstances. Properly considered, it can re-invent our heritage, transform our lifestyles and inspire us to achieve more‌

David is the Design Director for Keppie Design where,since 2001 he has built a reputation for innovative and challenging approaches to major projects.

Amongst these are The Ayrshire Maternity Hospital (2005), four schools for North Ayrshire Council (2006), a programme of 8 university campuses in Libya (2009) and a new Community Theatre currently under construction in Huangshan, China.

He has regularly given conference lectures on design to a number of visiting study groups from all over the world, and was recently the only architect invited to speak at an international Government promoted conference on Healthcare Design in Istanbul.

David has written several published articles, specifically concentrating on the relationship between procurement and design quality. David is also currently a Design Advisor to Strathclyde Passenger Transport for their modernisation programme of the Glasgow Subway in advance of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Creativity in Public Spaces

Heather Sim, Managing Director, Space Unlimited

If you do what you love, it will never feel like work.

Susan is East Ayrshire Council’s Disability Awareness Advisor and has worked in local authority Building Standards for 25 years.

She has a Master’s Degree in Accessibility and Inclusive Design and is an accredited member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Inclusive Environment Consultant Scheme. Susan was part of a recent Scottish Government working group for the Building Standards Division taking account of accessibility and she is also part of an editorial group who are reviewing the Scottish Inclusive Design Handbook.

Susan is passionate about Inclusive Design where individuals are not excluded simply by the design of products or our built environment – the areas we have to negotiate on a daily basis.

Heather runs a small social enterprise called Space Unlimited, based in Glasgow.

They help groups of young people and organisations to work together to design and make change happen. In their work, the young people’s own ideas and talents provide the initial inspiration.

When not at work, she loves being outside – garden, sea-side or mountain are all fine. She claims it comes from living in a sports mad family. Heather’s talk: “explores the idea that we all have a natural capacity to create something worthwhile. There are many places to look for inspiration. The most important research begins inside – with your own passions. I plan to talk a little about why I think this needs to be better understood and then offer a wee tool that people can try out and take away.”

Helen Duncan, Cultural Coordinator, East Ayrshire Council

What is the Speed of Dark?

The value of arts, culture and creativity in Scotland now, and in the future.

Helen is inspired by people, art, nature, colour, laughter and music. Currently working with East Ayrshire Council’s Creative Minds Team, she is Creative Director of “Rock ‘n’ Role Models”, a company working with children, young people, and their communities to develop their own creativity and ambition. Helen has a varied background including Harvey Nichols management, running a hotel and performing live at King Tut’s!

Helen’s role models include W.B Yeats, William Wallace and Blondie. Helen believes we all make a positive contribution to the world, even if it is simply a smile and is continually inspired by people she meets every day.

Hugh Smith, Head of CareerLong Professional Development, University of the West of Scotland

The impact of context on our being and existence: We all have the capacity to engage with interesting things. This begins when we are infants, but the context and opportunity in which this engagement occurs shape how and what we become.

Hugh is Head of Career-Long Professional Development within the School of Education at the University of the West of Scotland. He has a substantial experience of education across all phases and experience of senior leadership.

Paul Montgomery, former pupil and performer

Ever wish you had a song written just for you?

Paul was educated at St. Joseph’s Academy, where he was Head Boy and performed in many drama and musical productions. He has gone on to performalongside acts such as Bon Jovi, Nickelback, Deacon Blue, Saw Doctors and Nazareth.

He recently compered the East Ayrshire’s Got Talent Showcase and occasionally performs as a stand-up comic.

Rev. Grant Barclay, Minister of St. Kentigern’s, New Farm Loch

Mr Barclay's Balls: creativity, collaboration and challenge for a new world.

Grant Barclay is Minister at St Kentigern's Church in New Farm Loch, the local Church of Scotland congregation, where's been since 1995. He's chaplain at all the local schools and has been involved with assemblies in St Joseph's. Before entering the ministry, Grant worked as a solicitor in private practice. He has an interest in technology, collaboration and education, has an MSc in Advanced Learning Technology, a PhD in technologyenabled adult Christian education and is currently convener of the Church of Scotland Council of Assembly, the trustees of that national Kirk.

Sandy Brown, Chair, New Farm Community Council

What can YOU offer your community?

At present the Chair of the local Community Council, Sandy has been a member of the Community Council for 6 years.

He retired from the police force in 2008, having served for 30 years, mostly in local communities throughout Ayrshire and is an elder of St Kentigern’s Church in New Farm. He is married and has two grown up children and four grandchildren.

Simon Sharkey, Director, National Theatre of Scotland

A Theatre of Opportunity?

What’s that? A discussion of the underlying philosophy that informed the National Theatre of Scotland’s Transform programme.

Simon Sharkey is associate director at the National Theatre of Scotland. His pioneering work has stretched across Scotland and the world. He gained a NESTA Cultural Leader Fellowship through his work in the Middle East. He is a writer, director, educationalist and father of four boys. He also serves on the Arts and Business Board, Scotland.

Thom Sherrington, History Teacher and Thinker

Britain is a society of wimps, boozers and posers. Can our young people save us?

Thom is a History teacher living and working in Deeside, Scotland. He enjoys cycling, hillwalking, reading and cooking. He likes setting himself challenges and in the past has walked a 500 mile pilgrimage in Spain, cycled from Lands End to John o’ Groats, and mountain-biked from the Isle of Skye to Stonehaven.

This summer he is running the West Highland Way over three days.

In 2011 he was awarded the title “British and Irish Young Thinker of the Year”.

The theme of his presentation is rites of passage, and how they could be re-invented to benefit our modern society.

Craig Lynn, Designer

The new industrial revolution, the crowd is key.

Craig is a graduate from the Product Design Engineering course at Glasgow School of Art. Craig went on to set up Meso design, an award-winning traditional Product Design consultancy. Over his five years as Design Director at Meso Craig kept a watchful eye on how the industry, and the way we develop products, was changing.

In December 2013 Craig split away to set up his second business, Product Sprout, a product development agency for the new industrial revolution, which sets out to exploit these changes to make invention more successful.

He reflects on these experiences in a talk that looks at how the way we develop products is changing with the recent rise of crowdfunding, crowdsourcing, the “maker” community and 3-d printing.

Professor Danny Gorman

James Clerk Maxwell, a lad from Galloway: the life and works of a 19th century Scottish physicist who is held in the same esteem and Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton. His life tale is one which will inspire young scientists and engineers to what is really possible with work and dedication.

Professor Daniel G Gorman BSc, PhD, DSc, FInstP is a Hamilton boy who left Holy Cross High School in 1968. After a brief spell at Honeywell Ltd, Newhouse, and Coatbridge Technical College he moved to Macclesfield, Cheshire where he served an engineering apprenticeship with Ernest Scragg and Sons, manufacturers of textile machines. During that time he was awarded the Institution of Mechanical Engineering’s Arthur Morley Prize and Medal for the top HND student in the UK in 1972 and was also awarded a Whiteworth Scholarship to attend Strathclyde University. From there in 1974 he was awarded a first class honours degree in Engineering Science and Mathematics and the James Mellanby Prize for being top student that year. He gained his PhD from Strathclyde in 1977 and was awarded the James McKenzie prize for excellence in postgraduate research in the university. He then took up a lectureship in Engineering Science at Trinity College Dublin and then Queen Mary College (University of London) in 1981. In 1989 he took over as Head of Mechanical and Offshore Engineering at the Robert Gordon University and in 1995 was appointed Professor of Engineering at the University of Aberdeen and awarded his DSc. in 1996. In 2001 he moved back to Strathclyde University to become Professor of Mechanical Engineering and retired in 2009.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. He is a founder and President of the Kilmarnock Engineering and Science Society and Vice President of the Kilmarnock Probus. In retirement, Danny enjoys golf and is still active in scientific pursuits. As a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Ambassador he helps local primary and secondary schools in their delivery of the science curriculum.

David Cameron

Who is creating the future?: supporting young people to shape the future rather than simply adapt to it.

David Cameron has established himself as a leading voice in education. He has led reviews and presented at conferences in Scotland, across the UK and internationally, but he remains committed to working with teachers and learners. David has extensive experience as a teacher, a senior manager in schools and in local authorities, most recently as Director of Children’s Services for Stirling Council.

He has been extensively involved in Curriculum for Excellence and, notably, in the review of Devolved School Management. As an independent consultant, he has maintained that level of involvement and further broadened his experiences.

Mike Davis, Co-founder creative storytelling project for young people in Media City, Salford

Developing a nation of creative storytellers: the development of public volunteer projects to develop the creativity and literacy of young people

Mike enjoyed a 30 year career as a Scottish Chartered Accountant, culminating as Managing Partner for Ernst & Young, Liverpool. He was heavily involved in the development of a number of small- and medium-sized enterprises in the North West in the 1980s and 90s as well as appearing on several series of Granada TV’s Flying Start. He has been Deputy Governor of Manchester Grammar School and is currently a governor of Stonyhurst College as well as maintaining a range of nonexecutive chairmanships.

Inspired by the work of Dave Eggers’ Valencia 826 he is now exploring his interests in literacy, creativity, education and regeneration through a creative storytelling project for young people in Media City, Salford.

Philipa Aitken, Team Leader, Cultural Development, East Ayrshire Council

Kilmarnock – Creative Place Award Winner 2013 Why Kilmarnock is one of the most creative places in Scotland, and how the award will inspire creativity and transform redundant spaces, whilst supporting economic growth.

Phillipa has almost 20 years experience in the cultural sector.

Her career started at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen where she held the position of Research Assistant in Design, having a number of papers published around the use of digital technologies in craft practice.

What did the Romans do for us? An examination of the effects of the Romans in Scotland

Dr. June Neilson attended the University of Newcastle upon Tyne where she gained her first degree in Medieval and Modern History. As part of this degree, she specialised in Roman Britain for two years which she studied in the Classics Department. This specialism required her to study Roman Provincial Administration from original inscriptions and documents. She was required to take part in a summer’s dig at the Roman supply depot of Corbridge on the Stanegate just below Hadrian’s Wall under the direction of Professor Eric Birley and John Gillam. Whilst History Librarian at Queen Mary College, University of London, she undertook research for a Ph.D at the London School of Economics.

She was a founding member of CraftScotland and a member of the Board of Directors for eight years during which time she moved into her current role of Cultural Development Leader for East Ayrshire Council.

Phillipa has raised over £700,000 to support the development and commissioning of new work in East Ayrshire and, with the team , has won an Excellence in Engagement Award as well as a Saltire Award for the Public Art programme. Most recently Phillipa led the team who won the Creative Scotland Creative Place Award for Kilmarnock.
