RACE FOR LIFE On Sunday, May 4th, sixty pupils and ten staff took part in the annual Race for Life on Glasgow Green. The event raises money for cancer charities and was attended by over 14000 runners. The St. Joseph’s contingent, who ranged from S1 pupils to experienced members of staff (and included a suspiciously masculine-looking individual) took part with their usual zest and enthusiasm. First over the line for the school in the 5k race was Isla Neilsen who completed the course in 24 minutes. Not far behind her was Mrs. Parker, the first teacher to cross the line. Thereafter they all made it in, resplendent in their pink frocks. Mr. Shepherd (who organised our participation in the race) staggered home still wearing his tutu and pink wig, but happy to have been part of such an impressive event. Certainly it was very humbling to read the dedications on the back of the shirts of many of the runners who were clearly motivated by the impact of cancer on their own lives. At the start of the race Mrs. Gilroy took to the starter’s podium to provide some words of inspiration and get a special mention for the school. Also joining St. Joseph’s both on the course and at the finish line were various parents and carers, making this a truly family event for the school. Special mention must be made of Miss Horrey who completed the race, looking just a little flushed, in 42

minutes undaunted by the fact that she is 40 weeks pregnant. ............................................................................................ “Organising the run was an absolute pleasure. I feel honoured to be associated with such a smashing bunch of pupils. It was faith in action.” Mr. Shepherd ................................................................................ We have yet to calculate a final figure for the money raised by the run, but with funds brought in by the hundreds we expect a big total. All sponsor money should be handed in to the office by May 16th. S2 into S3 Pupils in S2 are currently preparing for their move into S3 by choosing a more personalised curriculum. They have been issued with personalisation and choice sheets and also with an information booklet to share with their parents and carers. This booklet provides an overview of S3, its purpose, our expectations and the opportunities that the pupils can expect to have. The pupils were also shown examples of excellent interdisciplinary learning from this year’s S3. You can download the booklet at www.issuu.com/sja2013/docs/ making_the_most_of_s3
