INSPIRE AND TRANSFORM: Pupils’ work makes a splash brightening up Kilmarnock
National 5 PE pupils make the most of international sport in Glasgow On Wednesday Miss McGaw of the PE department and classroom assistant Mrs. Walker took a group of thirty pupils to the Emirates Arena in Glasgow to watch the World Youth Netball Championships. Amongst the participants were pupils from the PE National 5 class who are studying and participating in netball as part of their course and who found the trip a great enhancement to their studies. The games the pupils saw were: Israel (23) v Malta (69); Cayman Islands (62) v Republic of Ireland (26); Fiji (60) v Papua New Guinea (48); Northern Ireland (42) v Scotland (50). The final game was especially exciting with Scotland were losing after the first quarter, only then to take and hold the lead for the next 3 quarters – it was a very tense, close game, with the crowd and pupils really getting behind them. Some of the pupils also took the opportunity to participate in activities that were set up in the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, including volleyball, badminton, netball, table tennis and sprinting over 20 metres in which they could compare their times with Usain Bolt over the same distance. As yet no pupil has come forward as a serious challenge to the Jamaican.
As featured in the Kilmarnock Standard, the work of several senior pupils is now a fixture in the town centre - full story and more pictures to follow.
