MAJOR SPRING PRODUCTION
c-Thieves Carnival' 1Yakes Light of Life The drama depa r tm ent will present its major spring
production. " Th i eves ' Carnival. .. April16. 17, 22, 23 and 2-l at 8:30 p.m .. in the college t heater , 2100 :\loorpark A,.e. The pla y. dir e cted by \\'illia m D. Kester , was .\Tttten in 1932 by Jean -\noudh. creator of -:i1arac ters who make a 5ame of life. Included in the .:a,;t are :\like Frazee, who plays Hector: Grant Foster pu rtra y ing Gustave ; Bob Loomis in the role of Peterbono: David Spiro as Lord Edgard ; Judy Burke playing Lady Hurf ; and Francais Williams as Eva. Other roles are played by Teda Pilcher (Juliette) ; Ste,·e Nelson and Kent Bunne ll ( policeman );
Cou rtl a n d S au n de r s (DuPont-DuFort, Sr.); Don E . Moore (DuPont-DuFort, Jr.) ; nine year old Lisa Ke ster, daughter of the director, plays the role of the little girl in the play. Action revolves around Lady Hurf and her nieces Juliette and Eva, who come in contact - with three professional thieves. Juliette falls in love with one of the thieves and the bored Lady Hurf, delighted at the turn of events, sits back and enjoys the thieves' attempts to relieve her of jewels and silver. The playwright, in an underlying theme, appears to be demonstrating his concern with the relativity of truth with " a masquerade in truth" by presenting man as

too complex and possessed of too many conflicting personality t raits to ever become a peaceful unity. " Thieves' Carnival " supports Anouilh's theory that exaggeration is the essence of humor. His characters escape reality through fantasy and numerous disguises. The play contains no truly heroic characters unless Gustave could be called heroic in his endeavor not to cheat. The play was originally performed in Paris at the Theatere Desarts, and later at the Cherry Lane Theater in New York. Set de!lign is by Stuart 0 . Bennett; costumes by Nancy Johnson and Nancy Tonkin; technical director is Ben Shelton.
