"I am quite proud of what I have achieved at this school."
Success can be measured in many parts: individual, community and state. At San Jose City College, the three are beautifully intertwined in Ewa Darabi. Darabi is a 24-year old biochemistry major with an open, frie ndly smile and a 3.87 GPA. She was selected alongside 24 other community college honor students for Phi Theta Kappa's All-American Academic "First Team." The students selected represent some of the best students in California's 107 community colleges. On April 5, they were honored at an All-American Academic Team luncheon ceremony sponsored by the Community College League of California held at the Sacramento Convention Center.. Darabi, who grew up in Poland, is no stranger to success. The honor student was once a professional speed skater. In 1992, she won a silver medal in the European Junior Championship. However, due to amenorrehea, a medical condition , that affects women athletes, Darabi was forced to quit her athletic career. Rather than letting her medical condition hold her back, Darabi became interested in the medical field . She moved to Germany and finished high school. While in Germany, Darabi met her husband, Amir. She came to the United States with him three and a half years ago and is currently in her fifth semester at City College. "I think it's a very good school," Darabi said. "I like the size of the classes ... there's always ... one-on-one help." Because she didn ' t speak a lot of English when she came to City College, Darabi said that she hadn't expected to very good at school. Darabi spent her first semester studying English and has since advanced through the English courses without taking ESL classes. "I am quite proud of what I have achieved at this school ," she said. Darabi will be graduating this June with an A.A. in biochemestry. She has applied to a number of Bay Area colleges and the University of California, Los Angeles. She
