Competitive cafeteria prices Examination of cost comparison suggests cafe prices are reasonable BY ANN ELIZAGA

TIMES STAFF

Considering the factors that with the San Jose City College cafeteria item pricing, you may be able to come up with a personal opinion on what may be the best value for your student dollar. “Costs of goods change constantly due to location, weather, gas prices, supply/ demand, and volume. Food costs (raw materials) account for 35-40% of price of menu items, ” said Thomas Nguyen, Vice President of Fresh & Natural, “Prices are set up for at least one year and can only be increased with a formal request (to adjust the contract with the district).”

Campus Life 3

After speaking with the administration of Fresh & Natural, the company contracted with the district to provide cafeteria services. We checked with the manager of the cafeteria on campus. “Our prices are not that high, our markup on a bottle of soda. For example, its only about thirty five cents above what Pepsi Charges us,” said Kevin Tranh, well-known manager of Fresh & Natural Cafe, where prices have not risen in 3 years. Shannon Hips, a freshman student at SJCC felt “the prices are ok, but could be better. I think if you got it at the grocery store, you are able to get it at the same price.” Do you find the cafeteria prices unreasonable? If so, please contact us at contact@freshnatural.com If you have any comments or suggestions about the cafeteria, then let them know contact@freshnatural.com.

Faces In the Crowd

What advice do you have for new students? COMPILED BY FRANCIS ANDERSON, ZACH TATAR, JAVIER BECERRIL / TIMES STAFFS

COMPILED BY ANN ELIZAGA / TIMES STAFF

Name: Mary Bedrossian Age: 29 Major: Social Behavioral Liberal Arts Answer: Good students.

There Are 4 Planets That Have Similar Surfaces to Earth despite their inabilities to Inhabit Human Life. The people who wrote ‘Take Me out to the Ballgame’ had never been to a baseball game before they wrote it. The first shuttle was actually the Space Shuttle Orbiter Enterprise, named after the famous starship in the Star Trek television series. It was a drop-test vehicle released from a Boeing 747 in midflight. The Enterprise made five successful free-flight tests prior to Columbia’s history-making maiden flight into space. In 800 million years, the Earth will not have enough CO2 to support life as we know it. When Dave Grohl left his first band, the group broke up because they’d never find as good a drummer. Scientists say the average person eats about 2 pounds of bugs a year. That’s because insects accidentally get ground up in foods like peanut butter, strawberry jelly, and spaghetti sauce. They won’t hurt you; they’re actually full of protein.

Name: Blanca Sandoval Age: 20 Major: Cosmetology Answer: Everything seemed stricter compared to high school. You didn’t get as much help.

Name: Angel Tello Age: 20 Major: Physics Answer: Before at my first year I thought it would be easy but from learning through the years. It feels like you’re on your own to add classes, pay fees, being responsible, etc. Name: Nelson Coronado Age: 25 Major: Kinesiology Answer: The college experience has a lot of opportunities but i see them diminishing as time passes such as classes, materials, and programs

Dear Jazzy, I’m in a tough spot and I need some good advice. It’s my boyfriend. I’ll call him James. I would call him a few other things, but you probably wouldn’t print it, so I’ll stick with James. James is crazy hot. He’s also crazy dangerous when he gets in his car. He drives like a maniac in a video game. He has a little car (Nissan) that does not go too fast, but he floors it everywhere he goes! He thinks stop signs mean “stop if the cops are not around” and yellow lights mean go faster. You’re almost out of time! He won’t even wear a seatbelt, and he has already got one ticket. He thinks he can get out of it. I’m really freaking out. I want to get my license then make him let me drive, but right now I can’t. How do I get him to be safe? I worry about him. I’m pretty sure he is even worse when I’m not there. I am scared to say anything else. He gets mad. Not violent or anything, just mad. I am perplexed. Help! Signed Puzzled Dear Puzzled, It would seem your boyfriend has no care for his life. I think you should sit down and discuss this matter with him. Share your fears and worries with him. Driving properly is a big responsibility that must be taken seriously. Inform James that if he does not change his driving habits and attitude, you will not ride in his car. Puzzled, you are putting your safety first as you should. If you make this commitment, stand by it. If James continues his behavior and disregards your feeling on this matter, this is a sign of being in an unhealthy relationship. You deserve a relationship with someone who respects, cares and loves you. Everyone needs to feel cared for and protected; however, you are receiving the opposite in this relationship. You do not need to get a license to protect your man; you need a man that protects you. Best wishes - Jazzy
