Student Success Initiative Plan is a roadmap to graduation BY DIANNE ESCALANTE TIMES STAFF

Many students at San Jose City College enroll in classes with the misconception that they will spend only two years at a junior college and transfer to a California State University or University of California. Graduation requirements change every year, and many students are not aware of these changes. Students might be confused about what classes to take every semester. Students may not get the classes they need due to late enrollment, so face a waitlist. Priority registration may assist a student with getting the classes that you need to graduate quicker. The Student Success Initiative Plan was passed by the California legislature last year and implemented this year at San Jose City College. This initiative is a program that requires all community colleges in California

to have an educational plan in place for all students. “An educational plan not only reduces the possibility of a waitlist by allowing priority registration, a student can organize his or her classes, take the classes they need, graduate on time, and the college receives more funding,” SJCC counselor Carlos Chavez said. More funding and education plans in place together will assist the college in determining the need to hire more counselors, and instructors for weekend and summer classes. A prerequisite for student to receive an educational plan is to attend a workshop. “Students must attend a workshop to understand processes that affect their educational plan,” SJCC counselor Rachel Hagan said. Workshops teach students the requirements needed to receive priority registration and learn the difference between a California State University and a University of California transfer

requirements. “In workshops, the students receive advice from a career counselor about how to stay in good standing, so financial aid will not be affected,” Hagan said. After the workshop the student will meet with a counselor because graduation requirements change every year. For example, if a student is a business major, he or she will meet with a counselor to create an education plan for just the classes he or she needs. If students do not have an education plan they may take unnecessary classes and spend unnecessary money. Students that develop a relationship by meeting with their counselor regularly tend to be better informed about their major and October Monday

can prepare for their major. Students may need a letter of recommendation. Meeting with a counselor makes it easier because the counselor is familiar with the student. Workshops are available on campus and run approximately an hour and half. Workshops are free. Dates and times of workshop schedules for October and November are available on the SJCC website under the counseling link. Workshops are offered on weekdays, evenings and Saturdays. Students can just show up. To see a counselor, go to the counseling center on the 2nd floor of the Student Center. Counseling hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 30

Tutoring Center can be helpful Free tutoring sevice for all SJCC students BY ANN ELIZAGA TIMES STAFF

Students who struggle with a variety of subjects can find help from a friend on campus, or can visit the Tutoring Center. Tutoring is available for all San Jose City College students for free. “Currently the tutoring center offers tutoring in several subjects and language courses,” said Ann Soman, Tutoring Center faculty coordinator. The Tutoring Center serves students by free drop-in and group tutoring in math, chemistry, physics and Spanish. “There is an average of 30 students at one time in Tutoring Center, or more, prior to test days,” said Jennifer Parsons, biology/chemistry tutor. Parsons said that students come for tutoring in many subjects, especially math, but students do not take full advantage of opportunities in science courses.

FROM PAGE ONE Every year there is a different theme for the celebration. The theme this year is “Wrap & Roll Around the World” with demos of how to make egg rolls and a rice ball making station, according to the tentative event schedule. SJCC staff will demonstrate how to prepare a rice ball. International Movie/ Pizza night, Cultural dress Fashion Show/Dance and language survival sessions will be some of the fun informative activities among the event schedule. International Student Ngan Le, from Vietnam, said she will participate in the fashion show event and will wear a Vietnamese traditional dress ao dai. “I feel really good to be part of the International program, and I would like to invite other students to be part of us, if seeking an affordable education,” Le said. “I feel grateful to be here. You can have friends from all over the world.” This celebration is part of the efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans to share and exchange students, cultures and languages worldwide, creating a bridge of partnership and friendship through education, according to the website of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. “I feel warm and welcome to be part of the International Program,” said Nina

Pham, an SJCC international student from Vietnam. “The coordinator Doriann Tran is great. I like to attend most of the events where the international students get together.” IEW also encourages individuals, institutions including schools, colleges, international organizations, businesses and associations interested in international education to be part of international programs. “International education creates lifelong friendships,” said John Kerry, U.S. Secretary of State, as quoted by the website in 2013. “The International Education Week is becoming a stronger celebration every year in SJCC,” said Doriann Tran, SJCC International Program counselor/coordinator. Different departments have joined to collaborate in order to offer a successful week event, she said. In the past years only a few departments such as International Program and ESL Department were taking part. Now the Associated Students, Global Study Program, Professional Development Center along with volunteer students are participating to celebrate this weeklong fun event. Tran said, “Every year is being better and better and bigger and bigger with more collaboration through the other departments.” Want to be a volunteer? “Not as many for biology and chemistry, but the math people get more students,” Parsons said. The Tutoring Center resides in the Library/Learning Resource Center, first floor, L105. Tutoring days are Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. The center is open on Fridays, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. “We are currently experiencing high attendance in the Tutoring Center,” Soman said. According to the Tutoring Center brochure, in order for the college to be funded by state for tutoring, instructors or counselors must refer students to use these services. The teachers need to recommend

students to Tutoring center. Students need to receive A’s or B’s in order to be tutors. Students need to have a conference meet to know the basics about the process, Parsons said. When a student comes in for tutoring, staff will try to match his or her name with a list of referred students. If the name appears on the list, students will be asked to enroll in LS210 Supervised Tutoring, according to the brochure. There is no charge for services. Tutors and staff can help with the necessary paper work. If you need more information about the Tutoring Center, message Ann Soman at 3238/ Anuradha.soman@sjcc.edu.com, or Peiman Gheibi at 3559/Peiman. gheibi@sjcc.edu.
