Southern California College tour Students enjoy their spring break touring colleges around Southern California BY VIRIDIANA CASTELLANOS TIMES STAFF

Spring break is when college students are expected to party all night and sleep all day. However, for 42 San Jose City College students, their spring break was quite the opposite. With the help of Lezra Chenportillo; the head coordinator of this trip, San Jose City College took 42 students on a tour around Southern California to visit seven college campuses in four days. The trip was open to everyone and the students were selected based on their applications that they’d submitted. The application was pretty simple, just some basic personal information and a one-page essay that talked about why the student wanted to attend the trip. More than 42 students applied to attend, but since there was only a limited space they had to choose based on the student’s applications. The trip was completely free;

it included transportation which was a charter bus for everyone who attended lodging and meals. Early in the morning at 6 a.m on Monday March 21, the students went on their journey and their first stop was USC. The students got there around noon and got a tour of the schools Cinema Arts, where students

got a private tour of a formers student’s studio who is majoring in stop motion animation. After a long day touring the school and the community around it, the students finally got to their hotel around 9 p.m. After USC they drove down to UC San Diego, San Diego State, CSU Long Beach, UCLA, UC

Santa Barbara, and finally CSU SLO. The trip took 4 days in total, they had workshops in between and a lot of time to get to know their fellow group mates. “It was a nice experience because I got to know more about the different colleges and I could see the different diversity

between them” said Margot Uchicua who is majoring in Graphic Design. Students were allowed to explore around on their own, not only just inside campus but outside as well.

San Jose City College is now home to a state of the art welding lab training 30 welding apprentices from Stationary Engineers local 39. Vice President of Administrative Affairs, Jorge Escobar said in the first issue 2016 of its monthly newsletter “The Campus View” that, “I believe that the combination of welding stations, welding equipment, and fume extraction system is perhaps the only one of this kind in the West Coast.” The class is career centered developing real world problem solving skills Welding Student Robert Almdida said, “I really like the Class and I hope to get proficient in welding all sorts of structural steel. The program is good, it is informative, you get a lot of lab time. It is real hands on and is beneficial to the companies we work for because you learn to do the things you have to do on the job.”

According to Associate Dean of Career & Technical Education, Maniphone Dickerson and citing from the California Labor Department, the Occupational outlook for welding skills is robust with: l 2014-2015 total number employed in welding occupations: 6,400 just in the Bay Area l 2016 projections for welding occupations: 1,874 for California with projection of total openings for the Bay Area estimated at 30-35 percent (560-650) l 2017-2022 projections for welding occupations: 30,600 for California with projection of total welding occupational annual openings of 930. The Bay Area welding occupation projection is at 30-35 percent (279-325 welding occupation annual openings.) Dickerson went on to state the midrange starting salaries begin in the mid to high $60,000 range. The current welding programs consist of three welding classes designed for members of the Stationary Engineers local 39 as part of their apprentice program. The program will eventually evolve into an AS degree in welding and be open to all interested students.

Take advantage of what you pay for The health center of San Jose City College serves the students BY RABIH CHAHINE TIMES STAFF

Students may not be aware of the benefits available for them and how much it costS. “All San Jose City College students pay a health fee at registration, which covers all visits to the medical doctor and provider,” Said the RN nurse on campus Kathleen Barzegar. San Jose City College health center is located at the student center across from the student store. Barzegar said, “All these services are for free and you only need an appointment to be seen.” Furthermore, Barzegar enforced that students can see a personal counselor for as low as a dollar.

Camille Zuniga, 23, majoring in business, was concerned about her privacy when she asked about who sees the results. “I was not aware that I have paid for these services already and cannot believe they cover all those important things,” Zuniga said. Barzegar expressed all students are protected under Health Insurance portability and accountability (HIPPAA), meaning only the staff can view patient charts and only the health center and the patients will be aware of the diagnoses. Alexis Rascon, 23, management information systems said, “the main reason my girlfriend uses the health center is to get a checkup. She is nervous and shy but always feel safe going here.” When visiting the health center, check the hours because they change often. To make an appointment over the phone, call 408-288-3724. CAMPUS NEWS 3

Enhancing students enthusiasm in journalism BY JON CALAMATEOS TIMES STAFF

The Journalism Association of Community Colleges convention is an opportunity for junior college undergraduates to network, compete in contests and attend workshops. The event took place in Burbank, Calif., where San Jose City College Times students took home two awards and learned skills to apply to the newspaper. The JACC convention is a yearly opportunity for junior college undergraduates to network, compete in contests, and attend workshops. Awards are given for contests that simulate how journalists research, prepare, and write a story. Many talented and enthusiastic college students talk about choosing a major. 400 college students from the state of Calif., attended the statewide journalism

David Xavieal and Alex Martinet brought home awards from JACC on March 17 in Burbank, Calif. convention to learn about a career in journalism The workshops were full of slideshows and statistics that helped students realize there was more to this convention than writing for a school newspaper. One workshop provided students the best times to post on social media sites, which sparked the student’s attention. They began to take pictures and notes as the information rolled out. Each presentation had knowledgeable speakers. There was so much to go over

yet students still seemed to be intrigued. Some students who attend the convention weren’t Journalism majors, but it created space where students grew a deeper appreciation of the craft, and of the field. It was also a place where students had to reflect about aspects of life, how to be consistent and how catch an audience. Students cheered for their peers and colleges, and everyone was supportive of all the winners. San Jose City College’s own Patrick Huaranga and Brennon Dixson won fourth
