Garden Court Community Grocery Store S. 49th St. & Spruce St., Philadelphia, PA

The objective for the design of the building is to confront the food access problem in the Garden Court Neighborhood. The buildings and facilities are intended to be used as a device in order to bring the community together as well as educate them on how to live an active and healthy lifestyle.

Using the recreation field on site to the building’s advantage, it was important to make a connection between the two. This connection is done both literally and figuratively, where the land seems to lift the building in some areas creating constant views of healthy activities such as excersizing as well as views of the farmers market and community gardens.

The purpose of the design is to create a library that functions as an anchor for the Northern Liberties Community. By serving as an iconic image the building brings the community together as well as further educates the community.

By carving the form in response to the site conditions and separating the form in response to the programmatic conditions, the manipulations not only allow the dense site noise to be addressed, but they also designate the main entrances. By splitting the form, it defines the main circulation both interior and exterior as well as allows natural light to enter the main spaces.

The EUR Social Housing Center Viale America & Via Cristoforo Colombo, Rome, Italy

The objective for the project is to recycle and re-use the already existing concrete structure on site, which was at one time Renzo Piano’s design for a multi-use space including shops and offices. The intent for the design is to create social housing and recreational spaces for the area while focusing on connecting the site back to the park and lake.

The 113th John Stewardson Memorial Competition

1500 Ridge Avenue., Philadelphia, PA Francisville, once the site of a vineyard, is North Philadelphia’s oldest neighborhood and is widely known for going against the grid. The streets of this unique neighborhood were originally designed to run parallel and perpendicular to Ridge Avenue, where as the city’s street grid was later extended north. Due to this, the streets intersect at odd angles making an awkward street layout.

The site is located on the Ridge Avenue Corridor of Francisville in the arts district and is projected to create a new distinct identity for the corridor. The concept of this proposal is to remain true to the uniqueness of the neighborhood’s history while still staying true to the rapidly developing arts district. In order to do this, the commercial program on the first floor is formed in order to reinforce the irregular grid of Francisville. On the contrary, the residences respect the grid of Center City and are designed to represent the archetypal house. Although the spaces interpenetrate one another, the residences are looked at as individual houses which provide a domestic scale that the residents can relate to.

The design contains a simple material palette with concrete, recycled wood and multiple passive and active sustainable systems that strengthen the building and its programs. The south orientation of the residences allow for maximum natural daylight to enter through the windows. The operable skylights provide a resource for natural ventilation to occur.

A solar panel system is placed on the steep roofs to generate and supply electricity to the residents. The lower sloped roofs contain green roof systems that absorb the rainwater, provide insulation for the building and help to lower the urban air temperatures. The commercial buildings contain green wall facades that insulate the spaces while also providing shade. The combination of both the active and passive systems require less energy consumption for the buildings and provide a comfortable environment for the users.

FRANCISVILLE, ONCE THE SITE OF A VINEYARD, IS NORTH PHILADELPHIA’S OLDEST NEIGHBORHOOD AND IS WIDELY KNOWN FOR GOING AGAINST THE GRID. THE STREETS OF THIS UNIQUE NEIGHBORHOOD WERE ORIGINALLY DESIGNED TO RUN PARALLEL AND PERPENDICULAR TO RIDGE AVENUE, WHERE AS THE CITY’S STREET GRID WAS LATER EXTENDED NORTH. THE CONCEPT OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO REMAIN TRUE TO THE UNIQUENESS OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD’S HISTORY WHILE STILL STAYING TRUE TO THE RAPIDLY DEVELOPING ARTS DISTRICT. IN ORDER TO DO THIS, THE COMMERCIAL PROGRAM ON THE FIRST FLOOR IS FORMED IN ORDER TO REINFORCE THE IRREGULAR GRID OF FRANCISVILLE. ON THE CONTRARY, THE RESIDENCES RESPECT THE GRID OF CENTER CITY AND ARE DESIGNED TO REPRESENT THE ARCHETYPAL HOUSE. ALTHOUGH THE SPACES INTERPENETRATE ONE ANOTHER, THE RESIDENCES ARE LOOKED AT AS INDIVIDUAL HOUSES WHICH PROVIDE A DOMESTIC SCALE THAT THE RESIDENTS CAN RELATE TO.
