SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES vs NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION BUCK SHAW STADIUM, Santa Clara, Calif. March 10, 2012 (WEEK 1, MLS Game #5) 7:30 p.m. PT (CSN-CA; CSN-NE) Two clubs looking to make returns to the MLS Cup Playoffs kick off the 2011 season against each other with the San Jose Earthquakes play host to the New England Revolution. The Quakes are trying to recapture the magic of their lateseason charge two years ago, behind the goalscoring prowess of Chris Wondolowski. The Revolution have a new head coach in former defender Jay Heaps, the club’s first coaching change in a decade. REFEREE: Jorge Gonzalez. The Earthquakes won both meetings in 2011, 2-1 victories both at Buck Shaw Stadium (May 21) and at Gillette Stadium (Oct. 8). The Earthquakes are carrying a four-game unbeaten streak against New England, since a 2-1 Revolution victory, Aug. 29, 2009 at Gillette Stadium. Coaches record: Frank Yallop vs. NE: P17 W10 L5 D2 … Jay Heaps vs. SJ: first game SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes are aiming to make their return to the MLS Cup Playoffs, missing out on the postseason last year after a thrilling run that ended just shy of MLS Cup 2010. The Quakes finished seventh in the Western Conference a season ago. The Earthquakes concluded their preseason schedule with a dominating 5-0 victory against Chivas USA in the final match of the Portland Preseason Tournament. Chris Wondolowski, Justin Morrow, Tressor Moreno, Sercan Guvenisik and SuperDraft selection Sam Garza scored for San Jose. Here’s the Earthquakes team: Jon Busch, Steven Beitashour, Ike Opara (Jason Hernandez 46), Justin Morrow, Ramiro Corrales, Marvin Chavez (Sam Garza 74), Sam Cronin, Rafael Baca, Shea Salinas (Tressor Moreno 63), Chris Wondolowski (Sercan Guvenisik 79), Steven Lenhart (Khari Stephenson 63). Chris Wondolowski, who has scored 34 goals in last two seasons and finished atop the MLS goalscoring charts in each year, scored four times in preseason play. “We brought in some great guys, especially offensively, and I think that’s really going to help produce [goals] and be very dangerous in the attack,” Wondolowski said. “I know other guys are going to be scoring a lot, but I think goal totals in general – and general play for us – will improve.” Wondolowski still feels he can reach the 15-goal mark in 2012. Each of the last two seasons, his total has been marked by late-season surges. “It’s just one of those things were everyone goes out and tries to do their part, and the style of play we have, we like to get the ball wide and whip crosses in,” he said. “Those guys were doing their job, and it was my job to try to get on the end of it. I don’t think it was too dependent, I just think it was the style of play that we had.” Steven Lenhart, who missed the second-half of the season last year for personal reasons, has returned to form in the preseason. He has partnered Wondolowski in attack and scored in his first preseason start, a 2-0 win against Chicago on Feb. 19 in Oxnard, Calif.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
The Quakes reached terms with Tottenham Hotspur FC in England to have Simon Dawkins return for a second season on loan. Dawkins had six goals and two assists in 26 appearances for San Jose in 2011. “I think that Simon can play on the left side and had success there for us,” Earthquakes general manager John Doyle said. “[But] I wouldn’t say that that’s a certainty. Simon can play second forward, he can play forward, he can play in the middle of midfield. He’s a very versatile player, which is great for us. I think we have a much deeper team than we’ve had in the past and that’s a good thing and a bad thing for a coach.” Center back Ike Opara, who missed the majority of last season through injury, was called into the U.S. U-23 national team and scored in a 2-1 win against FC Dallas on Feb. 23.

Longtime stalwart Jay Heaps moves from the broadcast booth to the bench to take the reins, trying to end a two-year playoff drought. Last year, the Revolution finished in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, tied for the fewest points in MLS. The Revolution completed their four-game run in the Desert Diamond Cup in Tucson, Ariz. without a loss in regulation play. They won their three group play matches, then lost in the final on penalty kicks to the LA Galaxy following a scoreless draw. Here’s the Revolution team vs. LA: Matt Reis, Chris Tierney (Darrius Barnes 46), A.J. Soares (John Lozano 46), Stephen McCarthy, Kevin Alston, Benny Feilhaber, Shalrie Joseph, Clyde Simms (Austin da Luz 71), Kelyn Rowe (Ryan Guy 79), Blake Brettschneider (Fernando Cardenas 66), Saer Sene “We showed that at times we can play, but when we can’t, we have to make sure we know how to fight,” Revolution head coach Jay Heaps said. “By being undefeated in this tournament, you show some character, you show some resolve and you show some fight. Those were things, day one, we wanted to make sure the guys know that’s important to us as a staff and they came out and showed that.” The draw in the preseason finale was the only blemish on the Revolution’s record in their first preseason under Heaps. “We feel like we’ve made steps,” Heaps said. “It’s very cliché, but I say all the time: Every time we step on the field, we want to make a step forward. There are areas where we feel we have strengths, and there are areas for improvement.” Heaps was looking for the match to serve as a final dress rehearsal before the season opener, and planned to trot out a first-choice XI. “As a coaching staff, it’s our job is to manage the minutes right now, so from this preseason, we’ve had [core] players back,” Heaps said. “We’ve wanted to make sure we’re getting minutes for certain players in the right way. Going into the final game, we’re hitting stride on our Saturday-Saturday-Saturday schedule that I think will help prepare us as we start the beginning of this year.” Both Kevin Alston and A.J. Soares started vs. the Galaxy after missing time during the tournament through injury. Ryan Guy was also able to return from a calf injury and play the final 11 minutes as a substitute, after figuring in the match vs. RSL. The Revolution made three signings early in the week, adding forward Blake Brettschneider and midfielders Alec Purdie and Michael Roach. Brettschneider spent 2011 with D.C. United. Earlier, the Revolution had waived midfielder Ryan Kinne and forward Zack Schilawski. The Revs also picked up former U.S. national team midfielder Lee Nguyen after he was waived by Vancouver Whitecaps FC. “We were a little shocked to see his availability,” admitted Heaps. “You want to do your due diligence and make sure there wasn’t a reason [he was waived] or there wasn’t anything that was blaring. We did a little bit of reconnaissance and found out that it was just a matter of a numbers crunch up there in Vancouver. So we want to make sure that we give him an opportunity to succeed.” OFFSEASON TRANSACTIONS IN: M Clyde Simms (12/12: Re-Entry Stage 2/D.C. (Wondolowski, Morrow, Moreno, Guvenisik, Garza) Last Game vs. New England Revolution Earthquakes 2, Revolution 1; Oct. 8, 2011; Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Mass. Chris Wondolowski tallied twice, eight minutes into the game and eight minutes from the end, as the San Jose Earthquakes completed their 2011 season sweep over the New England Revolution, 2-1, at Gillette Stadium last Oct. 8. Rookie goalkeeper David Bingham, making his MLS debut, provided the improbable assist on the opener, with Wondolowski neatly corralling his thumping clearance and tucking his shot inside the far post for the perfect start. Following a 55th-minute equalizer by Benny Feilhaber, Wondolowski climbed to nod home his 14th goal of the season and snatch the victory. Simon Dawkins had fed Sam Cronin’s overlapping run down the right, with Cronin providing the back-post cross for Wondolowski’s sixth career multi-goal game. Bingham made four saves in the Quakes net. The club enters the 2012 season with a new head coach in former Revs defensive stalwart (2001-09) Jay Heaps. Heaps shares the club’s all-time record for appearances at 243 apiece with leading returning goal-scorer Shalrie Joseph. New England posted an undefeated 6-0-1 record during the preseason, including a 0-0 draw with the LA Galaxy in the finals of the FC Tucson Desert Diamond Cup in Tucson, Ariz., with the Galaxy claiming the title by virtue of a penalty-kick tiebreaker. Kelyn Rowe, the No. 3 overall selection in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft out of UCLA, impressed throughout the lead-up with a team-best four goals and four assists over six matches. The Revs picked up U.S. Men’s National Team veteran Lee Nguyen on March 2 through the Waiver Draft, a day after the midfielder was waived by Vancouver. Wondolowski Looking to Extend Career-Best Scoring Streak From Sept. 24 to Oct. 22 of last year, San Jose forward Chris Wondolowski scored in the Quakes’ last five matches, with six strikes in all during that time period. The five-game goal-scoring stretch tied Landon Donovan of the LA Galaxy for the longest in MLS in 2011, and is the longest active streak heading into 2012. It is also the longest such run of Wondolowski’s MLS career. Wondolowski is no stranger to streaks. His previous best was a four-game run from April 17-May 8, 2010. More notably, from Sept. 15, 2010, through March 26, 2011, Wondolowski provided all 12 of the Quakes’ goals. He tallied the club’s final 10 regular-season markers to close 2010, setting the alltime MLS record for the most consecutive goals scored by one player in league play. Wondolowski passed Carlos Ruiz, who scored nine straight for the LA Galaxy from 2002-03. He then extended his own standard by striking twice in the Quakes’ second match of 2011 at FC Dallas, following a season-opening shutout defeat at home to Real Salt Lake. The incredible string was finally halted when Simon Dawkins found the back of the Seattle Sounders FC net in the 32nd minute on April 2, 2011.
San Jose Earthquakes vs. New England Revolution, March 10, 2012 7:30 p.m. PT MLS First Kick 2012 The MLS season opens on Saturday, March 10, with five matches, including a nightcap featuring the San Jose Earthquakes and New England Revolution at Buck Shaw Stadium (7:30 p.m. PT, Comcast SportsNet California). The action starts with the expansion Montreal Impact at Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Columbus at Colorado at 3 p.m., followed by Sporting Kansas City at D.C. United at 4:30 p.m. Joining San Jose in the 7:30 p.m. time slot is another Western Conference duel, Real Salt Lake at defending champion LA Galaxy. Quakes Get Go-Ahead from San Jose Planning Commission on New Stadium The San Jose Planning Commission voted 6-0 to uphold the Earthquakes’ Planned Development Permit on Feb. 22, paving the way for the club to break ground on its new stadium at 1125 Coleman Avenue. The Earthquakes’ PD Permit was initially consented for approval by city planners on Dec. 14, but was appealed by a Newhall Neighborhood Association member on Jan. 1. Fans clad in Earthquakes colors filled the council chambers to capacity. Owner Lew Wolff, Club President Dave Kaval and MLS President Mark Abbott spoke on behalf of the Quakes, among numerous community members and stakeholders, for over two hours before the commission closed discussion and took action on the appeal. The club has already sold 10 of 12 available field-level luxury suites for its new stadium, generating over $3.5 million in revenue for the project. For more information about the remaining suites, visit www.sjearthquakes.com/newstadium, email suites@sjearthquakes.com or call 408-556-7700. Home Sellout Streak The Earthquakes enter the 2012 campaign on a franchise-record streak of six consecutive home sellouts (10,525). The streak dates back to San Jose’s game against D.C. United on July 30, 2011, and also includes matches against Portland on Aug. 6, Colorado on Aug. 13, Chicago on Sept. 10, Sporting Kansas City on Oct. 1 and FC Dallas on Oct. 22. With an added stand on the South End, the attendance for the season finale with FC Dallas actually rose to 10,744 spectators. Quakes Unveil Comprehensive Broadcast Partnerships For the first time in club history, the San Jose Earthquakes will have all of their games on television, English radio and Spanish radio during the 2012 season. The Quakes announced partnerships in recent weeks with Comcast SportsNet (CSN), 1590 KLIV and KZSF 1370 AM. Marking the most comprehensive regional television schedule in team history, CSN will televise 29 Earthquakes games in 2012 in High Definition, with 18 on CSN California, beginning with the March 10 opener against New England (7:30 p.m. PT), eight on CSN Bay Area and three more on CSN Plus. The remaining five contests will have national television audiences, with four on NBC Sports Network and the June 30 California Clasico against the LA Galaxy at Stanford Stadium on ESPN2. Two of the CSNCA tilts will also air nationally on Spanish-language Galavision. The club’s local broadcast team consists of Jim Kozimor (play-by-play), Kelly Gray (color analyst) and Dan Dibley (sideline reporter). La Kaliente will cover all 34 Quakes games in Spanish for the second straight season. On the English side, KLIV returns as the broadcast partner for the first time since 2005, having carried Quakes matches in 2004 and 2005. Anthony Passarelli serves as the primary play-by-play commentator on KLIV, while Carlos Cesar Rivera is back for his fifth consecutive season as the Spanish voice of the Quakes, and his eighth overall. Hernandez Poised to Hit Century Mark Earthquakes defender Jason Hernandez has started all 99 matches that he has played in over his first four seasons in San Jose. His next league appearance and start will thus mark milestone No. 100 for the franchise in each category. Meanwhile, Hernandez is steadily climbing the all-time club charts, as he is one start away from tying Eddie Lewis (1996-99) for No. 8 on that list, and ninth in minutes played (8,757), right behind Lewis (8,867). Quakes Aiming for First Home Opener Win Since 2003 The San Jose Earthquakes have not won in their season opener since a 2-1 triumph at the Colorado Rapids on April 12, 2003. The club has gone 0-5-1 to kick off its last six campaigns, including a 1-0 loss to the New England Revolution in 2009, a 3-0 defeat to Real Salt Lake in 2010, and another 1-0 setback to RSL a year ago, all coming at home inside Buck Shaw Stadium. Corrales Approaches 200 Starts for Quakes Veteran defender and team captain Ramiro Corrales is two starting assignments away from No. 200 for his illustrious Earthquakes career. Corrales is the franchise’s all-time career leader in games played (216), starts (198) and minutes played (17,651). Now in his 11th season in San Jose, he also shares the club record with 14 playoff appearances. Corrales played in his 200th game for the Earthquakes on July 2, 2011, against the New York Red Bulls. He made his MLS debut on April 28, 1996, at the LA Galaxy. And Then There Was One Ramiro Corrales is the lone remaining active player in MLS who participated in the league’s inaugural 1996 season. Defender Frankie Hejduk and goalkeeper Zack Thornton made a handful of appearances for the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA, respectively, in 2011, but neither player currently appears on an MLS roster. Corrales was the youngest to play in MLS in 1996 as a 19-year-old. 2012 Newcomers General Manager of Soccer Operations John Doyle and head coach Frank Yallop brought in a number of new acquisitions through several transactions during a busy offseason to bolster the Earthquakes lineup and add bench depth. They first traded for Shea Salinas, who was selected by the Quakes in the second round of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft and spent two seasons in San Jose prior to being picked up by the Philadelphia Union in the 2009 MLS Expansion Draft. In December, the Quakes negotiated trades for a midfield tandem with MLS Cup Playoffs experience in Jean-Marc Alexandre and Marvin Chavez, formerly of Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas, respectively. At the end of the month, San Jose signed Chavez’s Honduran compatriot, veteran center back Victor Bernardez. The team then inked
San Jose Earthquakes vs. New England Revolution, March 10, 2012 7:30 p.m. PT Turkish forward Sercan Guvenisik in January and Colombian playmaker Tressor Moreno in February. During the first week of March, the club signed a pair of trialists and second-year professionals in goalkeeper Evan Newton and defender Josh Suggs. 2012 Rookies In 2012, the San Jose Earthquakes welcome winger Sam Garza, the No. 6 overall selection in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. Garza is a Generation adidas player who spent his sophomore and junior seasons of eligibility at UC Santa Barbara after earning conference newcomer of the year honors as a true freshman at Denver in 2008, and missing 2009 through injury. The Quakes have also signed Cesar Diaz Pizarro, their top selection in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft (2nd round, No. 25 overall). Diaz Pizarro is a forward from UC Riverside. Wondolowski Aiming for No. 1 on Quakes’ Career Goals List Chris Wondolowski continues to chase Ronald Cerritos for No. 1 on the franchise career goals list. The Danville native completed the 2011 season on a run of five straight matches with at least one goal, tallying six times in all during the furious closing stretch, to increase his career haul in San Jose to 37. Cerritos is the club’s all-time leader with 61 goals from 1997-2001 and 2005. Wondolowski also heads into the 2012 season tied with Cerritos for the most game-winners in club history with 15 each. Wondolowski’s 2011 Campaign Again Among the Most Prolific in Club History For the second straight season in 2011, Chris Wondolowski posted one of the top five goal-scoring outputs in Earthquakes history. With his first-half penalty-kick goal against FC Dallas on Oct. 22 at Buck Shaw Stadium, Wondolowski put the finishing touches on San Jose’s second-best single-season scoring performance, falling two strikes short only of his own standard in 2010. Wondolowski is the only player in Earthquakes history to score 15 goals or more twice in his career. He and Ronald Cerritos (12 in 1997, 13 in 1998, 15 in 1999 and 11 in 2001) are the only players in club history to produce multiple seasons with double-digit goal totals. The five best single-season goal outputs in club history follow: 1. Chris Wondolowski – 18 goals in 2010 2. Chris Wondolowski – 16 goals in 2011 3. Ronald Cerritos – 15 goals in 1999 4. Ariel Graziani – 14 goals in 2002 5. Ronald Cerritos – 13 goals in 1998 5. Paul Bravo – 13 goals in 1996 Wondolowski Joins Elite Goal-Scoring Club Chris Wondolowski became the ninth player in MLS history to score 15 or more goals in back-to-back seasons with his strike against Seattle Sounders FC on Oct. 15, 2011, at CenturyLink Field. In addition, Wondolowski’s two-year output of 34 goals ranks No. 8 all-time. The Danville native scored 18 in 2010 to win the Budweiser Golden Boot and 16 more in 2011 for a share of the league lead. Below is a list of players who have scored 15 or more goals in back-to-back seasons: Chris Wondolowski – 2010 (18), 2011 (16) Dwayne De Rosario – 2010 (15), 2011 (16) Carlos Ruiz – 2002 (24), 2003 (15) Taylor Twellman – 2002 (23), 2003 (15) Diego Serna – 2000 (16), 2001 (15) Roy Lassiter – 1998 (18), 1999 (18) Stern John – 1998 (26), 1999 (18) Jaime Moreno – 1997 (16), 1998 (16) Raul Diaz Arce – 1996 (23), 1997 (15), 1998 (18) Opara Captains U.S. U-23s to 2-0 Win Over Mexico Earthquakes defender Ike Opara captained the U.S. U-23 side and played all 90 minutes as the Americans blanked Mexico on Feb. 29, 2-0, at FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Opara was in camp with the U.S. from Feb. 19-29, as head coach Caleb Porter works to finalize a roster ahead of CONCACAF Olympic qualifying later this month. Wondolowski is Mr. October Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski is earning the reputation of Mr. October for his fall goal-scoring sprees. He is tied for No. 1 alltime in MLS history for career regular-season goals scored in October, with 11. He shares that spot with Edson Buddle, back with the LA Galaxy for the 2012 campaign after a season in Europe, and D.C. United’s Dwayne De Rosario, a former teammate. Wondolowski’s firsthalf penalty-kick goal during a 4-2 win over FC Dallas last Oct. 22 in the 2011 season finale at Buck Shaw Stadium enabled him to pass Christian Gomez on the list and catch Buddle and De Rosario at the top. Wondolowski’s entire October haul has come in nine appearances over the last two seasons, more than double the next player on the list (DeRosario with five) over that same time period. Assist Anecdotes Steven Beitashour, who led the Earthquakes with seven assists in 2011, tying for 11th in MLS, was not credited with his first career assist until June 4, 2011, marking the 12th game of the season … The first time that Beitashour was even on the bench for the Quakes in 2011 was the eighth game on May 11, making his season debut in a starting role … All seven of Beitashour’s assists came in a furious stretch of 22 contests to close the season for the young right back, with the first three of them coming on Steven Lenhart goals … A total
San Jose Earthquakes vs. New England Revolution, March 10, 2012 7:30 p.m. PT of 15 different Quakes players were credited with assists on Wondolowski’s 16 strikes in 2011, with Rafael Baca, Ramiro Corrales, Simon Dawkins and former players Ryan Johnson and Jacob Peterson registering two apiece … Two of the three assists provided by Baca during his rookie season out of Loyola Marymount came on Wondolowski goals, vs. Chicago on Sept. 10 and in Seattle on Oct. 15. Busch the Shot-Stopper Third-year Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch led the league in saves in 2011 with 113 in 33 matches, edging out his season-opening counterpart on March 10, New England Revolution net-minder Matt Reis, who finished with 111 saves in 27 games played. Busch Among MLS Career Leaders for Shutouts and Saves Jon Busch picked up the 60th clean sheet of his MLS career on Sept. 10, 2011, in a 2-0 win against the Chicago Fire at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Earthquakes’ starting goalkeeper is eighth among the all-time league leaders. He has posted 14 shutouts in his two seasons in San Jose, to go along with his 21 during three seasons (2007-09) with the Chicago Fire, and 25 in five seasons (2002-06) with the Columbus Crew. Next on the list is former MLS and U.S. Men’s National Team standout Tony Meola with 62. Busch is also No. 8 all-time in saves in MLS history with 801 over his career. Dawkins Back for a Second Season in MLS On Feb. 14, the Earthquakes and English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur reached a second season-long loan agreement to bring midfielder Simon Dawkins back to San Jose. Dawkins completed his first season in MLS with six goals, second-best on the team behind Chris Wondolowski’s 16, and two assists over 26 games, 19 of them starts. The then-23-year-old native of Edgware, England, was named the 21st-best player in MLS under the age of 24 according to MLSsoccer.com’s annual 24 Under 24 list unveiled in September of 2011. Dawkins originally joined the club on loan from Spurs on March 16, 2011. Hat Trick Heroes San Jose’s striking tandem of Chris Wondolowski and Steven Lenhart each have the distinction of having produced a hat trick in a Quakes uniform. Of just five three-goal hat tricks in franchise history, the duo has accounted for three. Wondolowski has achieved the feat twice, at Toronto FC on Sept. 25, 2010, and at home against Chivas USA on Oct. 20, 2010, the latter in just 50 minutes on the pitch. Lenhart collected his hat trick in a resounding 4-2 victory at D.C. United on June 11, 2011. In the nine matches that saw both players in the starting lineup in 2011, the Quakes scored 12 times for a 1.33 average, with nine of those goals either tallied or assisted by Wondolowski or Lenhart. That goals-per-game average dipped to 1.12 over the other 25 contests. Club Record for Ties in a Single Season The Earthquakes set a club record in 2011 for ties in a single season with 14 after a stretch of three consecutive draws from Sept. 21Oct. 1. The previous mark for ties in a single season was 11 in 2004. Quakes Set Career Milestones for Minutes Played A number of current Earthquakes set new all-time career highs for minutes played in a single season in 2011. The list includes: Steven Beitashour – 1,655; Previous record: 640 in 2010 Jon Busch – 2,970; Previous high: 2,700 in 2008 and 2009 with Chicago Fire Jason Hernandez – 2,491; Previous high: 2,451 in 2008 Justin Morrow – 810; Previous high: 59 in 2010 Brad Ring – 1,600; Previous high: 435 in 2010 Khari Stephenson – 2,256; Previous high: 776 in 2010 Chris Wondolowski – 2,672; Previous high: 2,308 in 2010 Ramiro Corrales’ 2,552 minutes were the single-season high of his San Jose career, but fell short of the 2,659 minutes he played in New York/New Jersey in 1999. Likewise, Sam Cronin played 1,903 minutes, a high for his Earthquakes career, but short of his 2,363 minutes as a rookie in 2009 for Toronto FC. Additionally, newcomers Jean-Marc Alexandre (703; Previous high: 494 in 2010), Marvin Chavez (2,521; Previous high: 818 in 2010) and Shea Salinas (1,695; Previous high: 1,306 in 2009 with San Jose Earthquakes) recorded career highs in minutes in 2011 for their former clubs, Real Salt Lake, FC Dallas and Vancouver Whitecaps FC, respectively. Making the First One Count The Earthquakes are 94-9-24 in their last 127 matches when scoring first, dating back to July 8, 2000. They finished 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, an unbeaten 12-0-2 in 2010 and 7-4-5 last season. In 2005, San Jose went undefeated at 14-0-5 when scoring first. The Earthquakes were 25-2-2 in 2001 and 2002 when finding the back of the net first. The Quakes only gave up leads two times in 2002, losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4 and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. The team continued that trend in 2003, maintaining an 11-0-1 mark. In 2004, the Quakes went 8-1-1 when scoring first, the best mark in MLS. The Quakes surrendered a 1-0 advantage and dropped a 2-1 decision at the LA Galaxy on July 4, 2004, losing for just the first time since July 27, 2002, when striking first. San Jose has completed a total of four seasons with an undefeated mark when scoring first (2001, 2003, 2005 and 2010). The Quakes are also impressive in the playoffs when scoring first, posting an 8-0-1 record all-time. Scoring First Under Yallop During Frank Yallop’s tenure with San Jose, the Earthquakes are one of the best teams in the league when scoring the first goal. The team went 36-2-3 from 2001-03 when producing the first goal of the contest. The Quakes only gave up leads two times in 2002, losing 2-
San Jose Earthquakes vs. New England Revolution, March 10, 2012 7:30 p.m. PT 1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4 and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. Yallop’s team was 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, 12-0-2 in 2010 and 7-4-5 in 2011. The Quakes are 69-8-18 (.821) in seven seasons under Yallop when striking first. Halftime Success The Earthquakes remain amongst the best in league history in holding onto a halftime lead. Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Earthquakes are 69-3-15 in games when leading at the half, including impressive marks of 7-0-2 in 2010, 4-0-3 in 2009, 7-0-3 in 2005, 70-1 in 2004 and 8-0-1 in 2003. Despite holding a 1-0 halftime lead on May 10, 2008, vs. Columbus, the Quakes were edged by the final score of 3-2. That game marked the team’s first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime advantage. NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION AT SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES
MISCELLANEOUS TEAM NOTES REVS OPEN 17TH SEASON The Revs kick off their 17th season on Saturday, entering the year with a 185-214-94 all-time record since the league’s launch in 1996 … New England has been out-scored 771-690 in 493 games, while posting 103 shutouts … the Revs have appeared in the postseason on 10 occasions, including a stretch of eight consecutive playoff berths from 2002 to 2009 before missing the MLS Cup Playoffs in each of the last two years (2010-11) … New England is one of nine original MLS teams still playing in MLS. RECORD-BREAKING NIGHT FOR JOSEPH? Saturday night’s match in San Jose could be a memorable one for Revs captain Shalrie Joseph ... should all go as planned and he take up his starting role in the central midfield, Joseph will not only move into a first-place tie with current head coach Jay Heaps on the club’s career starts list (239), but he will also claim sole possession of the club’s career appearances record (244) ... he enters Saturday’s game sharing the lead for career appearances with Heaps at 243 ... Joseph has been a stalwart in the team’s lineup since 2003, and has served as club captain each of the last three seasons (2010-present). GO WEST, YOUNG MEN ... AGAIN The 2012 season marks the seventh time in the last nine years the Revs will open their season on the West Coast (2004, 2006, 2010 and 2011 at LA; 2005, 2009 and 2012 at San Jose) … the Revs are 1-0-1 in their previous two season openers at San Jose: a 2-2 draw on April 2, 2005 (Spartan Stadium) and a 1-0 win on March 21, 2009 (Buck Shaw Stadium). STARTING THE SEASON ... Heading into Sunday’s opener against San Jose, the Revs are 4-8-4 all-time in MLS season openers, including a 3-8-3 mark on the road … the Revs have only opened an MLS regular season at home on one occasion – a 3-0 win over the Houston Dynamo at Gillette Stadium on March 29, 2008 … five of the Revs’ last six season openers have resulted in a shutout decision, with New England posting a 3-2-0 record in those matches … in 2011, the Revs posted a 1-1 draw at LA to open the season. … WITH A NEW COACH For the first time since 2000, a brand-new coach will be patrolling the sideline for the Revolution at a season opener as Jay Heaps will open his first-ever season as the Revolution’s head coach on Saturday at San Jose … the last time a brand new coach was the head coach on opening day was 2000, when Fernando Clavijo began his first season – 13 seasons ago … after Clavijo was fired seven games into the 2002 season, Steve Nicol – who was one of Clavijo’s assistants at the time – took the reins as interim head coach for the remainder of 2002, and was then hired full-time in the off-season and continued as head coach for the start of the 2003 season. JAY HEAPS FACTS & FIGURES Jay Heaps, 35, is the sixth head coach in club history, and is also the second-youngest active coach in MLS (behind D.C. United’s Ben Olsen) … Heaps had a nine-year playing career in MLS, first with the Miami Fusion beginning in 1999 - when he was drafted second overall in the MLS College Draft before earning MLS Rookie of the Year honors that sason - through June 2001 ... he was traded to his hometown club, New England, in June 2001 where he concluded his career before retiring following the 2009 season … Heaps remains the club’s all-time leader in appearances (243, shared with Shalrie Joseph) and minutes (21,619). HEAPS’ OPENER RECORD As a player for the Revs, Jay Heaps’ Revolution teams went 2-3-2 in eight seasons he was on the field for the season opener (2002-09), including a 1-0-1 mark against San Jose … overall in his career, Heaps’ teams went 3-3-3 all-time in season openers, including a 1-1-1 mark in his three season openers he played while with the Miami Fusion (1999-2001). PERSONNEL NOT AVAILABLE THIS WEEKEND Several players will definitely not be available for Saturday’s season opener for various reasons, and will not travel with the team to San Jose: • • • •
Zak Boggs (ankle injury) Jose Moreno (awaiting U.S. P-1 Visa) Sainey Nyassi (hamstring injury) Chris Tierney (suspension following red card in 2011 season finale at Toronto)
WESTERN RESULTS FEW AND FAR BETWEEN Saturday’s match in San Jose gives the Revs an opportunity to snap a 16-game winless streak in matches played in the Mountain or Pacific Time zones, which dates back to September 2009 … since earning a 1-0 win at Seattle on Sept. 26, 2009, New England is 0-11-5 in matches played in the Rockies or on the West Coast, and is just 2-13-5 since the start of 2009 in the two Western-most time zones. RESULTS EVEN TOUGHER IN PACIFIC GAMES The Revs will also be looking to snap a lengthy losing streak on the West Coast as the Revs have not won on the West Coast since a 1-0 victory at Seattle on Aug. 20, 2009 … since that
game, New England has gone 0-8-2 in West Coast games, including an 0-4-0 record in 2010 and an 0-4-2 record in 2011 … those include matches against Chivas USA, LA Galaxy, Portland Timbers, San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps. TWO WAIVED ON MONDAY The Revs waived two players on Monday: midfielder Ryan Kinne and forward Zack Schilawski … Kinne made one MLS appearance after the club selected him in the third round (42nd overall) in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft … Schilawski made 50 appearances, including 28 starts, while scoring six goals and adding one assist … the club selected Schilawski in the first round (ninth overall) in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. ROOKIES IN THE FOLD 2012 draft selections Kelyn Rowe, Tyler Polak, Alec Purdie and Mike Roach were each regulars for the Revs on the field during the 2012 preseason, and were among the squad’s preseason scoring leaders… Rowe, Purdie and Roach all performed well in the midfield, with Rowe picking up four goals and four assists in seven contests, while Purdie had one goal and two assists and Roach one goal. MORE DEBUTS COMING ON OPENING NIGHT? Revolution rookies have had a habit of getting the nod in the starting lineup in season openers – a trend that could continue Saturday with Kelyn Rowe and Tyler Polak possibilities in Jay Heaps’ starting 11 … Rowe led all Revs players in scoring in the team’s seven-game preseason schedule (four goals, four assists), while Polak is the team’s only other natural left back and could see time in place of Chris Tierney who must serve a one-game suspension on Saturday following two yellow cards at Toronto in the 2011 season finale ... in 2011, both A.J. Soares (center back) and Stephen McCarthy (central midfield) drew starting assignments in last year’s season opener against LA in Carson, Calif. … in 2010, rookies Zack Schilawski and Seth Sinovic started at forward and left back, respectively … in 2009, Kevin Alston (right back) and Darrius Barnes (center back) both earned starts … while no rookies started in the 2008 season opener, the Revs stated three rookies on opening day in 2007 (Wells Thompson, Gary Flood and Adam Cristman) PRESEASON RECAP The Revs capped an undefeated preseason with a 6-0-1 record ... the team went 3-0-1 against MLS competition, including a 1-0-1 mark against defending MLS Cup champions, the LA Galaxy, and wins against the New York Red Bulls and Real Salt Lake ... the team’s seven-week preseason schedule including an 11-day training trip to Casa Grande, Ariz., and a two-week trip to Tucson, Ariz., for the FC Tucson Desert Diamond Cup. BABY-FACED ASSASSIN Rookie midfielder Kelyn Rowe – age 20 and whom the Revs selected with the third overall pick in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft out of UCLA – was the Revs’ surprising leading scorer in preseason … with four goals and four assists in six games played, Rowe factored in all but two of the team’s seven goals in the preseason … in fact, Rowe factored in his first Revs goal just 38 minutes into his competitive action after sending a cross in against FC Tucson which Sainey Nyassi converted … in two games against Boston College, Rowe recorded two goals (on Feb. 10) and two assists (on Feb. 15) in a pair of wins … at the FC Tucson Desert Diamond Cup, Rowe had one assist against LA on Feb. 22, and both goals against New York on Feb. 25.
