SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES vs NEW YORK RED BULLS BUCK SHAW STADIUM, Santa Clara, Calif. March 10, 2013 (WEEK 2, MLS Game #17) 7 p.m. PT (ESPN2 / ESPN Deportes) Two clubs which suffered through tough results in the season’s first week meet when the San Jose Earthquakes play host to the New York Red Bulls at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes began defense of their Supporters’ Shield won last year with a 2-0 home loss to Real Salt Lake. The Red Bulls opened the season in Portland and held a 2-goal lead early in the first half, before settling for a 3-3 draw. REFEREE: Ricardo Salazar. The Earthquakes have won four of the seven meetings at home since, with three draws.  The Red Bulls have never won at Buck Shaw Stadium in league play (0-2-2), but did come away with a 1-0 victory in Santa Clara in the first leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinals in 2010. The Red Bulls also won a U.S. Open Cup play-in match at Buck Shaw in 2009.  The Red Bulls had won four home meetings in a row vs. San Jose before the teams played to a 2-2 draw in their only meeting a season ago.  Coaches record: Frank Yallop vs. NY: P19 W5 L7 D7 … Mike Petke vs. SJ: first game SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes did not get defense of their Supporters’ Shield off to the best possible start, falling to a pair of late goals in a 2-0 defeat by Real Salt Lake on Sunday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium. LAST MATCH  Real broke open the scoring in the 71st minute when Alvaro Saborío outraced two San Jose defenders to reach a looping lead pass from Joao Plata, firing home a powerful right-footed drive inside the near post, cleanly beating San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch.  RSL finished off the contest five minutes from the end when Kyle Beckerman found Saborío too loosely marked in the Quakes box, and he swiveled nicely from 11 yards out to tuck a left-footed shot inside the far post.  Mike Fucito was paired with Chris Wondolowski in attack by Frank Yallop, and Ty Harden was given the start at right back.  SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): Jon Busch - Ty Harden (Adam Jahn 83), Jason Hernandez, Victor Bernardez, Justin Morrow - Shea Salinas (Cordell Cato 79), Sam Cronin, Rafael Baca, Ramiro Corrales (Sam Garza 72) - Chris Wondolowski, Mike Fucito. TEAM NEWS  The Earthquakes backline, already missing Steven Beitashour following offseason sports hernia surgery, saw Dan Gargan miss the opener after suffering a quadriceps strain in training.  “We take a lot of pride, the defenders and myself,” goalkeeper Jon Busch said. “We take a lot of pride in defending well and giving our team an opportunity in each game, whether that’s get a shutout or keep the other team at one, whatever the circumstances are. We know what we need to do the first few weeks of the season.”  Said center back Jason Hernandez: “When I look back on it, I don’t think that we were necessarily in bad spots. I think we’re pretty well covered. It’s just a better touch and a better ball than our formation and our shape. Sometimes you’ve got to give credit to a good team and good players.”

With Marvin Chávez sidelined due to an MCL sprain in his knee, Quakes head coach Frank Yallop started Ramiro Corrales on one wing and Shea Salinas on the other. “If you look at the first 60 minutes, we played really well,” Yallop said. “And I thought Shea was a part of that. It was kind of the plan to get him the ball as much as we can, feed him and let him do his thing, because he’s a good dribbler.” Said Salinas: “I was happy when I did create. Maybe [I was] playing a little bit too aggressive in the middle of the park, trying to go forward instead of sometimes playing safe. With that said, we did create a lot of chances.” Chris Wondolowski, who tied the league’s all-time single season goalscoring record with 27 goals last season, took seven attempts at goal but was not able to open his 2013 account. “A little unlucky, but pretty bad finishing by me,” Wondolowski said. “Horrible finishing by me. I had four clear looks and didn’t make Rimando make a save. ... If I score those in the first half, it puts the game away. We’re cruising in the second half and have three points in our pocket.” Said Hernandez: “I think [Wondolowski] sets his standards exceptionally high, and I think we’ve come to know him as a guy who really, every time he steps on the field, that he’s going to make magic happen and really impact the game. He puts a lot of pressure on himself to get on the scoreboard and carry us. It’s worked so well so far, so we’re not going to change that formula.” With Steven Lenhart and Alan Gordon both sidelined through injury, Mike Fucito was given the start alongside Wondolowski in attack. Fucito did not score a goal in 15 appearances last season split between Montreal and Portland. “Anybody watching the match could tell that we were a dangerous pair up top. We created a lot of opportunities when we worked together. The two of us had chances that we wish we had back, but the technique wasn’t there tonight,” said Wondolowski. “Overall, I felt we didn’t miss a beat with Mike up top and I’m excited to see how scary our attack will be once we are at full strength.” Said defender Justin Morrow: “We missed the guys up top in [Steven] Lenhart and Alan [Gordon]. We also missed Steven Beitashour in the back. No question we are a better team with them, but we were able create chances in their place. Players are going to miss time due to injury throughout the season. If we can step up to fill their voids like we did tonight we are going to be fine.” Fucito could be questionable for the New York match, suffering a hamstring strain out of the season opener. “It’s not [a bad injury], but it’s one of those where, if you’ve got cover, it’s not a problem,” Yallop said. “The reason we built the squad is to cover all the games we have. We’ve got a lot of good players that are out. So we’ve just got to get everyone healthy and then we’ll be fine.”

NEW YORK RED BULLS The New York Red Bulls opened their 2013 season with three goals in the first half-hour, but couldn’t hang on as they settled for a 3-3 draw with the Portland Timbers on Sunday afternoon at Jeld-Wen Field. LAST MATCH  The Timbers gave away an early lead after just nine minutes when Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts was unable to control an ill-advised back pass and Fabian Espíndola was right there to pot the easy open-net goal.  But Portland responded quickly. Diego Valeri took a pass from Kalif Alhassan in the area, cleverly volleyed past Olave and slotted a perfectly placed right-footed shot past New York goalkeeper Luis Robles inside the right post in the 14th minute.  The Red Bulls opened up a two-goal lead within a five-minute span. Espíndola finished off a long pass from fullback Kosuke Kimura in the right side of the area in the 24th minute, then Jamison Olave snuck in at the back post to finish off a Heath Pearce pass across the face of goal from a corner kick.  The Timbers pulled a goal in the 56th minute. Valeri hit a screaming blast that forced Robles into a diving save which he could not hold, and Darlington Nagbe swooped in put it into the open net. Then the equalizer came in the 83rd minute when Jose Valencia's attempted crossing pass from the right bounced off Olave into the goal.  Fabian Espindola was given the start as the spearhead in attack with new signings Juninho and Ruben Bover debuting in midfield for new coach Mike Petke.  NEW YORK RED BULLS (4-2-3-1): Luis Robles - Kosuke Kimura (Eric Alexander 90), Jamison Olave, Heath Pearce, Roy Miller - Dax McCarty, Juninho - Ruben Bover (Jonny Steele 66), Tim Cahill, Thierry Henry Fabian Espindola (Brandon Barklage 73) TEAM NEWS  In the first game as a head coach for former Red Bulls defender Mike Petke, his team conceded three goals – a total they allowed just three times in 34 league matches last season.  “We let an opportunity slip away from us. If you would have asked us a week ago, 10 days ago, if we would like to take a point on the road of the opening game in an environment like this and a good team like this maybe you say yes, maybe you make a deal with the devil and you say yes, but at the end of the day you’re on the road,” said Petke. “But possibly we let two (points) slip away.”

The Red Bulls saw their prematch preparations go awry when they were forced to leave New York on Saturday, a day late, because of mechanical issues on their aircraft. “What is frustrating is the way we came here,” Thierry Henry said. “We didn’t prepare anything because we were at the airport on Friday [and] on Saturday, too, trying to come here. We did eventually but we didn’t prepare the game how we should’ve prepared the game and you could see the last 30 minutes, everyone ran out of steam.” In his Red Bulls debut, playing as the lone striker with Henry and Tim Cahill providing the promptings from midfield, Fabián Espíndola netted a pair of goals. He had a pair of two-goal games last season, including the last one in which Real Salt Lake scored, a 2-1 win at LA on Sept. 15. “He brings so much to the table and the reason why he came off is because he runs and works so hard that he was just dead,” said Petke. “That was a reward for him, after all the work he’s done. Come off and have a rest my man, great work.” The Red Bulls once again hit for a big number at the attacking end. A year ago, they scored three or more goals in a game nine times, tied for second-most in MLS (with LA, behind San Jose’s 11). “I just think that we possibly came out with the mindset that we should save the lead instead of keep doing what we were doing in the first half. That falls on the coaching staff first and foremost,” said Petke. “Maybe we should have made it clearer … At the end of the day they battled, and there are guys in that locker room that are crushed right now. To see that type of attitude and that sort of letdown after scoring three goals on the road and getting a point on the road, which in MLS is very difficult to do, it’s great to see.”

Earthquakes’ Last Game Earthquakes 0, Real Salt Lake 2; March 3, 2013; Buck Shaw Stadium, Santa Clara, Calif. The San Jose Earthquakes dropped their 2013 opener 2-0 against Real Salt Lake at Buck Shaw Stadium. Alvaro Saborio took care of the scoring for the visitors with a pair of second half goals. The Costa Rican striker polished off his first in the 71st minute thanks to a through ball from Joao Plata. Saborio got behind the San Jose defense and then struck a shot on the run past goalkeeper Jon Busch. Saborio doubled his haul in the 85th minute, this time receiving a pass from Kyle Beckerman before slotting his shot past Busch to cap the scoring. The Earthquakes had their chances, including a Chris Wondolowski shot that found the crossbar in the 15th minute. The 2012 Budweiser Golden Boot winner led San Jose with seven shots during the match. Last Game vs. New York Red Bulls Earthquakes 2, New York Red Bulls 2; April 14, 2012; Red Bull Arena, Harrison, NJ. The Earthquakes twice fell behind by a goal on the road, but fought back each time to earn a valuable 2-2 tie on the road against the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena. Chris Wondolowski continued his sterling play with a goal and an assist, while Rafael Baca also scored for San Jose. The Quakes fell behind early as Thierry Henry found Kenny Cooper in the box and Cooper finished past Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch for a 1-0 lead. However, San Jose responded quickly with a great combination play. Wondolowski found Khari Stephenson on the right wing and Stephenson crossed it for Baca. Baca coolly hit the back of the net to even the game in the 15th minute. After Dax McCarty scored to put New York ahead a second time in the first half, San Jose again had a response. Steven Beitashour curled in a left-footed cross to the back post, where Shea Salinas slid to pull the ball back to the front of the goal. Wondolowski then headed the ball past Red Bulls goalkeeper Ryan Meara for his seventh goal of the season. San Jose Earthquakes vs. New York Red Bulls, March 10, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. PT Club Records from 2012 The Earthquakes’ 19 wins in 2012 tied a club record set in 1999 while their 66 points established a new San Jose best. The Earthquakes won 10 of their games in 1999 via shootout, a tie-breaking procedure that is no longer a part of MLS rules. The club’s previous record for points in a season was 64 when they took home the Supporters’ Shield trophy in 2005. Wondo’s Winning Ways Chris Wondolowski set an MLS record for game-winning goals in 2012 with 11. The previous mark was nine set by Wondolowski in 2010 and former LA Galaxy forward Carlos Ruiz in 2002. Wondo Likes Scoring Goals Before Sunday’s game Wondo has tallied a goal in six of his last eight matches and most recently scored in the final three regular season matches in 2012. Wondo Joins 20-Goal Club Chris Wondolowski’s 27 goals in 2012 made him the 10th player in league history to tally 20 or more times in a single season. The last player to score 20 or more in a season was Landon Donovan with the LA Galaxy in 2008. Goonie Stats The Earthquakes made headlines in 2012 for their late-game heroics. Here’s some key stats to keep in mind from the Goonies: -40 goals during the final 30 minutes of matches -22 goals during the final 15 minutes of matches -9 goals in second-half stoppage time, eight of which earned San Jose a win or draw -13 additional points in the standings the Earthquakes received due to second-half stoppage time goals Construction Resumes on New Earthquakes Stadium Construction has begun on the club’s stadium, which is set to open in 2014. Corrales reaches 200 Starts for Quakes Veteran defender and team captain Ramiro Corrales reached No. 200 for his illustrious Earthquakes career on Oct. 6 when the Earthquakes traveled to Colorado. Corrales is the franchise’s all-time career leader in games played (238), starts (217) and minutes played (19,318). Now in his 12th season in San Jose, he also shares the club record with 16 playoff appearances. Corrales played in his 200th game for the Earthquakes on July 2, 2011, against the New York Red Bulls. He made his MLS debut on April 28, 1996, at the LA Galaxy. And Then There Was One Ramiro Corrales is the lone remaining active player in MLS who participated in the league’s inaugural 1996 season. Defender Frankie Hejduk and goalkeeper Zack Thornton made a handful of appearances for the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA, respectively, in 2011, but both announced their retirement prior to the 2012 season. Wondolowski’s 2012 Campaign Again Among the Most Prolific in Club History For the third straight season in 2012, Chris Wondolowski posted the top-scoring output in club history. With a penalty kick awarded in the final game of the regular-season against the Portland Timbers, Wondolowski tied MLS’s all-time scoring leader Roy Lassiter’s record of 27 goals. Wondolowski is the only player in Earthquakes history to score 15 goals or more three times in his career. He and Ronald Cerritos are the only players in club history to produce multiple seasons with double-digit goal totals. The five best single-season goal outputs in club history follow: 1. Chris Wondolowski – 27 goals in 2012 2. Chris Wondolowski – 18 goals in 2010 3. Chris Wondolowski – 16 goals in 2011 4. Ronald Cerritos – 15 goals in 1999 5. Ariel Graziani – 14 goals in 2002 6. They are off to a 11-0-0 start in 2012. Despite holding a 1-0 halftime lead on May 10, 2008, vs. Columbus, the Quakes were edged by the final score of 3-2. That game marked the team’s first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime advantage. Reserve League: Earthquakes 0, Real Salt Lake 1 Real Salt Lake topped the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 in Reserve League play on Monday at the Earthquakes Training Facility in San Jose. BULLETIN BOARD RED BULLS RUMBLE WITH EARTHQUAKES ON SUNDAY Following their season-opening 3-3 tie with the Portland Timbers at JELD-WEN Field last Sunday, the Red Bulls again head to the west coast to take on the San Jose Earthquakes at Buck Shaw Stadium this Sunday at 10:00 PM ET (TV: ESPN2; Radio: ESPN Deportes New York 1050 AM). New York was able to stem a Portland rally in the second half of a thrilling match to earn a point. New Red Bulls forward Fabian Espindola got off to a terrific start, becoming the first New York player in club history to record two goals in his team debut. His former Real Salt Lake teammate Jamison Olave also tallied his first goal for New York, which also saw Juninho and midfielder Ruben Bover making their first MLS starts. The Red Bulls will face a San Jose Earthquakes side that will be looking for their first points of the 2013 MLS campaign after falling, 2-0, to Real Salt Lake at home last Sunday. The teams were deadlocked for over 70 minutes before an Alvaro Saborio brace helped secure the three points for the visitors. San Jose, the 2012 MLS Supporters Shield winner led by head coach Frank Yallop, returns Golden Boot winner Chris Wondolowski, who last year tied Roy Lassiter’s single-season record for goals scored with 27. The Earthquakes also boast MLS Best XI defender Victor Bernardez, veteran goalkeeper Jon Busch and the 2012 MLS All Star Justin Morrow. The Red Bulls are 10-15-8 all-time against San Jose. Last year, New York and San Jose faced off once – a 2-2 tie on April 14 at Red Bull Arena. The Red Bulls are unbeaten in their last four regular season matches versus the Earthquakes (2-0-2). FOR STARTERS Last Sunday’s match against Portland was the 11th time the New York franchise has opened its season on the road (out of 18 seasons). All-time, New York is now 7-7-4 in season openers and 2-6-3 in the 11 times it started its campaign away from home. In its first road matches of the season, New York has a total record of 6-7-5. New York is 10-3-3 in its home openers.

Drafted by New York in 1998 with the 8th overall pick in the MLS Draft, Petke made his debut on April 17, 1998 against the Chicago Fire. He helped the team to its first Eastern Division title in 2000 and was thrice named an MLS All-Star. Petke was traded to D.C. United before the 2003 season and won his only MLS Cup in 2004 with United. He was then traded to Colorado during their 2005 campaign, helping the Rapids to reach the Western Conference Finals. The Red Bulls signed Petke again at the end of 2008 and he played 35 more matches for the team until retiring following the 2010 season. He was named the club’s 2009 Defender of the Year and helped New York to its second Eastern Conference regular season title in his final season. Petke finished his career with 307 appearances in league play (351 in all competitions), in which he scored 13 goals and added four assists. He is one of 16 MLS players who has appeared in 300 or more career regular season matches. Petke also appeared in nine playoff matches and 13 U.S. Open Cup matches as a member of the New York franchise and earned two caps for the United States. Prior to his professional career, Petke spent four years at Southern Connecticut State University, leading the team to the NCAA Division II National title in 1995. RSL DUO MAKE IMMEDIATE IMPACT Former Real Salt Lake duo and offseason acquisitions Fabian Espindola and Jamison Olave made their Red Bulls debuts on Sunday at Portland and both impacted the match. Espindola tallied two goals in the ninth and 24th minutes with a pair of left-footed shots that beat goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts while Olave fired home a Heath Pearce cross in the 28th minute for his first goal since July 23, 2011 – a 4-0 Real Salt Lake win over San Jose. The Red Bulls acquired Espindola and Olave from Real Salt Lake on Dec. 3, 2012 in exchange for allocation money. In addition, former Real Salt Lake midfielder Jonny Steele made his New York debut, coming on for Ruben Bover in the 66th minute. New York traded for Steele’s rights on Feb. 20 in exchange for a conditional supplemental draft pick.

This is the fourth season in club history that New York has started its campaign with two-straight matches on the road (1997, 1998 and 2012 were the other times). In the three other seasons, New York started the year 0-2, meaning that Sunday’s 3-3 tie at Portland was the first time that it has earned a point under this scheduling scenario.

JUNINHO, BOVER EARN MLS DEBUTS Midfielders Juninho and Ruben Bover made their respective MLS debuts on Sunday at Portland. Juninho played the full 90 minutes while Bover started, tallied an assist and featured for 66 minutes before being substituted.

PETKE MAKES DEBUT Mike Petke officially made his head coaching debut in New York’s 3-3 tie with the Portland Timbers. The 13th individual to earn the New York top position, Petke faced off on Sunday against another first-time MLS head coach – former University of Akron head coach Caleb Porter.

The Red Bulls signed Juninho on Dec. 17 from Brazilian First Division side Vasco da Gama. In his second and recent stint at Vasco da Gama, Juninho played 50 games since 2011 and recorded 14 goals. Prior to that, Juninho was with Qatari club Al-Gharafa, helping his team take home the league title and winning the Player of the Year honors.

Petke, who is one of the club’s most popular all-time players and its leader in games played, was previously serving New York as head coach on an interim basis before being the named permanently to the position on Jan. 24.

Juninho had a storied career playing for French First Division club, Olympique Lyonnais, from 2001-2009. With Lyon, the 37-year-old helped win seven-straight Ligue 1 titles from 2002-08 while recording 100 goals in 344 matches in all competitions. His goal mark is fourth all-time in Lyon history. A veteran of the UEFA Champions League competition, Juninho, who played under Houllier from 2005-07, was named Ligue 1 Player of the Year in the 2005-06 season and was a three-time member of the Ligue 1 Team of the Year.

Petke, 37, finished his second season as an assistant coach on New York’s staff after an illustrious playing career. He joined the coaching ranks in 2011 following a 13-year career that included two playing stints with the club from 1998-2002 and 2008-10. The Bohemia, NY native holds the current club record for games played, with 169 (196 in all competitions), games started (158 regular season) and minutes played (14,060 regular season).

Juninho began his career with Brazilian side, Sport, in 1991 before heading to Vasco da Gama in 1995. He won the Brazilian Championship with the Rio de Janeiro-based side in 1997 and 2000 and the Copa Libertadores in 1998.
