TORONTO FC vs SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES BMO FIELD, Toronto, Ont. March 24, 2012 (WEEK 3, MLS Game #19) 1 p.m. ET (TSN/RDS; CSN-CA) Toronto FC return to BMO Field for their first league match of 2012, taking on the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday afternoon in an intra-conference clash. TFC began their MLS campaign last weekend with a 3-1 loss at Seattle Sounders FC. The Quakes are on the road for the first time this season, following a First Kick win with a 1-0 loss to the Houston Dynamo in San Francisco last weekend. REFEREE: Silviu Petrescu. The teams have played to three draws in Toronto, including a 1-1 tie last season; the Quakes won a 3-2 decision in 2010.  The home team has won just once all-time in the series – a 2-0 Earthquakes victory Oct. 25, 2008 at Buck Shaw Stadium.  Coaches record: Frank Yallop vs. TOR: P15 W6 L6 D3 … Aron Winter vs. SJ: P2 W0 L0 D2 TORONTO FC Toronto FC started off their fifth MLS season with a defeat, falling 3-1 to Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday evening at CenturyLink Field. LAST MATCH  Sounders FC scored their first goal of the MLS season in the 17th minute. After Alvaro Fernández sent in a teasing cross from the left, David Estrada was the quickest to react, digging the ball out of a scrum and eventually punching it home.  Seattle and Estrada hit for a second six minutes after the break. Played in behind the TFC backline by Marc Burch, Estrada raced into the area unmolested and curled it past goalkeeper Milos Kocic.  Ryan Johnson halved the lead in the 62nd minute, setting off from near the midfield stripe before cutting square across the top of the box and hitting a stunning strike into the far corner of the goal.  But Estrada soon restored the margin for his hat trick. He played a quick one-two with Fernández in the area, lashing home a right-footed shot inside the near post.  With Eddie Johnson out through injury, Estrada was given the starting spot in attack alongside Fredy Montero. Michael Gspurning made his MLS debut, replacing the retired Kasey Keller.  Rookie Luis Silva was called upon to pull the strings in the center of midfield behind the front three, while new signing Logan Emory stepped right into the side at right back. Milos Kocic came in between the posts.  TORONTO FC (4-2-1-3): Milos Kocic - Logan Emory, Ty Harden (Danny Koevermans 46), Miguel Aceval, Richard Eckersley - Terry Dunfield, Torsten Frings (Aaron Maund 24) - Luis Silva - Nick Soolsma, Ryan Johnson, Eric Avila (Joao Plata 57). TEAM NEWS  Toronto FC suffered a potentially devastating loss when Torsten Frings was forced off the field midway through the first half with what was diagnosed as a hamstring strain. He will out of action for 4-6 weeks.

“It’s a big loss,” Winter said. “Of course, we’re looking always for a player similar to Torsten for in a case of what has happened. You need somebody who is a leader on the pitch and a leader outside of the pitch. And Torsten is very important for us. But in that time we can have solutions in our own roster.” In the match in Seattle, rookie Aaron Maund stepped into the deep-lying central midfield role. Another possibility would be veteran defender Adrian Cann, but he is still questionable after undergoing offseason knee surgery. “Everyone’s got to step up to the plate now, obviously,” said right back Richard Eckersley. “Torsten is a big influence on the team and things at the back. I think everyone’s got to get their chest out now and we’re all going to be leaders. Whoever steps into the center back position, then they’ve got to do a job there if it’s me or someone else.” Ryan Johnson continued his rich vein of form, scoring for a third time in as many matches in all competitions this year. He scored in both legs of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal vs. LA Galaxy. “I can only speak for myself,” Johnson said. “My legs were fine. I think we got enough rest. The coaches didn't work us too hard in practice so we were fresh. Every game, we're ready regardless of how soon we played a game before that. I think we need to be true professionals and be ready for the next game." After starting both matches of the CCL quarterfinal tie, Stefan Frei was dropped in goal in favor of Milos Kocic. “We had to make a choice and we chose Milos,” said Winter.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes couldn’t build upon their season-opening victory, falling 1-0 to the Houston Dynamo on Saturday afternoon at AT&T Park. The Quakes sit in a tie for sixth place in the Western Conference with 3 points from 2 games. LAST MATCH  The Dynamo took the lead after 14 minutes. Brian Ching raced into the area to run onto an Adam Moffat through ball, and when he was clattered into by goalkeeper Jon Busch, referee Chris Penso pointed to the post.  Brad Davis pulled the resulting penalty to his right, placing it in the side netting past Busch, who guessed correctly but still couldn’t deflect the shot.  Earhquakes head coach Frank Yallop made one change to the team that opened the season with a 1-0 win against the New England Revolution. Khari Stephenson came into the side in place of Marvin Chavez.  SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-3-1-2): Jon Busch - Steven Beitashour, Justin Morrow, Victor Bernardez, Ramiro Corrales - Rafael Baca (Marvin Chavez 46), Sam Cronin (Sercan Guvenisik 80), Shea Salinas - Khari Stephenson (Tressor Moreno 63) - Steven Lenhart, Chris Wondolowski. TEAM NEWS  Chris Wondolowski saw his consecutive-game goalscoring streak stopped at six games, one shy of the MLS record.  “All you can do is create chances,” said Wondolowski, who was credited with five shots, two on goal. “Sometimes that touch comes, sometimes it doesn’t. Last game, we had one shot on goal, and we scored it. This game, we made them make five saves, a couple others we didn’t hit on frame, and you lose 1-0. It’s a funny game like that.”  The Quakes ended the match with a 24-8 margin in total attempts at goal, forcing Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall into five saves.  “I don’t think we need to change anything,” Wondolowski said. “We are creating opportunities. If I had those three or four chances next game, and I’m a betting man, I’m betting a lot of money that I’m scoring those. I should score those, and that’s why it hurts so bad that I didn’t score those.  Midfielder Tressor Moreno made his MLS debut, coming on for the final half-hour in place of Khari Stephenson in an attacking midfield role.  “Whether he starts or not on the weekend, I think he’s ready to play,” Yallop said of. “His fitness level is up, he’s doing well with that. He works hard after training a lot. He wants to play, and that’s great. He’s ready to go and he looks good right now.”  Moreno did not figure in the season-opening victory vs. New England.  “Tressor’s a dangerous player,” midfielder Shea Salinas said. “He looks for passes that most players don’t. Sometimes he pulls them off, sometimes he doesn’t. And when he does, they’re good balls. The ball through to me was perfect. So yeah, I thought he did well.”  The league’s final Original, Ramiro Corrales made his 200th start for San Jose in the Houston match, the 19th player to make at least 200 starts for a single club. Corrales made his professional debut as a 19-year-old on April 28, 1996, at the LA Galaxy.

Bold – Home Game *US Open Cup **International Friendly % Match played at AT&T Park. First game of a doubleheader with Mexico U-23s and Senegal U-23s. # Match played at Stanford Stadium

Last Game Earthquakes 0, Houston Dynamo 1; March 17, 2012; AT&T Park; San Francisco, Calif. The Earthquakes fell 1-0 to the Houston Dynamo last Saturday at AT&T Park in San Francisco, a first-half penalty by Brad Davis the difference in the match. Davis netted Houston’s goal in the 14th minute after Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch was whistled for a foul inside San Jose’s box. San Jose wasn’t without chances in the loss, outshooting the Dynamo 22-8 over 90 minutes, including a 14-3 margin in the second half. The 22 shots were the most by the Quakes since reaching that same total in a 2-0 home win over the Chicago Fire on Sept. 10, 2011. Several San Jose players achieved milestones on the day. Captain Ramiro Corrales made his 200th career start in San Jose, becoming the first player in club history to do so. Busch made his 200th MLS appearance in goal, while Colombian midfielder Tressor Moreno and Turkish forward Sercan Guvenisik made their MLS debuts. The result meant that the Quakes spurned an opportunity to win their first two games to begin a new campaign for the first time in their 15-season history. In recognition of St. Patrick’s Day, San Jose featured green numbers and lettering on the jersey backs of their first-choice black kit. Last Game vs. Toronto FC Earthquakes 1, Toronto FC 1; Aug. 27, 2011; BMO Field; Toronto, Ontario Chris Wondolowski nabbed a late equalizer as the Earthquakes played to a 1-1 draw with Toronto FC on Aug. 27, 2011, at BMO Field. Eric Avila broke the initial deadlock with an unassisted goal in the 32nd minute, finding the back of the net after picking up a loose ball outside the penalty box. Then with just three minutes remaining in the contest, Wondolowski struck for his ninth goal of the campaign to pull the visiting Quakes level. Assists went to Jacob Peterson and Bobby Burling, as Burling flicked second-half substitute Peterson’s long throw-in from the left side on toward the far post and a wide-open Wondolowski, who put his right-footed shot from close range into the right corner. Wondolowski’s game-high seven shots, with three of them on target, played a large part in the Earthquakes producing an 18-8 shot advantage for the match. Teammate Simon Dawkins added three efforts of his own. Jon Busch made three saves in goal for San Jose, while Milos Kocic earned credit for a pair of stops for the home side. The result was identical to the early-season fixture between the teams at Buck Shaw Stadium on April 9, and kept the Quakes unbeaten in Toronto in four trips.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Toronto FC, March 24, 2012, 10 a.m. PT OPPONENT INFO Toronto FC Scouting Report Toronto FC was one of the last three teams to play its MLS opener, losing 3-1 at Seattle Sounders FC on March 17. TFC’s lone goal came from former Quake Ryan Johnson, already his third of 2012 in all competitions. The Reds were also forced to watch German midfielder and team captain Torsten Frings leave the game in the 24th minute with a hamstring injury. Despite that result, TFC was still the talk of MLS last week, following a 2-1 triumph over the defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy in CONCACAF Champions League action at The Home Depot Center on March 14. The Reds thus advanced 4-3 on aggregate to the semifinal round as the lone remaining MLS representative. Johnson and Nick Soolsma accounted for the two TFC goals. The first meeting, played at Toronto’s Rogers Centre in front of 47,568 spectators, had ended in a 2-2 draw after the Galaxy rallied from an early two-goal deficit, with Landon Donovan equalizing in the 88th minute, to hold the slight edge heading toward their home leg in Carson. Johnson opened the scoring in that one as well for TFC, in the 12th minute, with top draft pick Luis Silva doubling the advantage five minutes later. After opening the home portion of its league campaign against the Quakes on March 24, TFC will next face another home-and-home series against Mexican outfit Santos Laguna on March 28 and April 4, with the winner moving on to the CCL finals. The Toronto FC head coach is Aron Winter. The former Dutch national team player (84 caps, Euro 88 title) is in his second season in charge of the Reds. The Quakes then edged TFC, 3-2, on Sept. 25, 2010, with Chris Wondolowski scoring all three goals for his first MLS hat trick, and played to another 1-1 draw last Aug. 27, with Wondolowski again finding his way onto the scoresheet through an 87th-minute equalizer. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES Corrales Draws 200th Start for Quakes Veteran defender and team captain Ramiro Corrales made the 200th start of his San Jose career against the Houston Dynamo on March 17. Now in his 11th season in San Jose, Corrales played in his 200th game for the Earthquakes on July 2, 2011, against the New York Red Bulls. Wondolowski Sees End to Career-Best Scoring Streak With a 1-0 defeat to the Houston Dynamo at AT&T Park on March 17, Quakes forward Chris Wondolowski saw an end to his club-record streak of games with at least one goal scored. His 15th-minute game-winner against the New England Revolution at Buck Shaw Stadium on March 10 had extended his then-MLS-best run to six dating back to last season. From Sept. 24 to Oct. 22, Wondolowski scored in the Quakes’ last five matches of the 2011 campaign, with six strikes in all during that period. That five-game stretch tied Landon Donovan of the LA Galaxy for the longest in MLS in 2011, and was the longest active streak heading into 2012. A tally against Houston would have tied Wondolowski for the league record, shared at seven straight contests by Raul Diaz Arce (1997), Wolde Harris (2000) and Carlos Ruiz (2006). Wondolowski is no stranger to streaks. His previous best was a four-game run from April 17-May 8, 2010. More notably, from Sept. 15, 2010, through March 26, 2011, Wondolowski provided all 12 Quakes goals. He tallied the club’s final 10 regular-season markers to close 2010, setting the all-time MLS record for the most consecutive goals scored by one player in league play. Wondolowski passed Carlos Ruiz, who scored nine straight for the LA Galaxy from 2002-03. He then extended his own standard by striking twice in the Quakes’ second match of 2011 at FC Dallas, following a season-opening shutout defeat at home to Real Salt Lake. The incredible string was finally halted when Simon Dawkins found the back of the Seattle Sounders FC net in the 32nd minute on April 2, 2011. Busch Joins 200 Club Goalkeeper Jon Busch became the second player on the current Earthquakes roster to make his 200th MLS appearance when he started against the Houston Dynamo on March 17. In his third season as the Quakes’ first-choice net-minder, Busch has now played in 200 MLS matches for Columbus, Chicago and San Jose, joining team captain Ramiro Corrales (275) in the 200 Club. He is now also just one start away from 200 as an MLS goalie. Moreno, Guvenisik Make MLS Debuts San Jose newcomers Tressor Moreno and Sercan Guvenisik each made their MLS debuts as second-half substitutes against the Houston Dynamo on March 17. Moreno came on for Khari Stephenson in the 63rd minute, while Guvenisik replaced Sam Cronin in the 80th. Both were on the bench for San Jose’s opener against New England on March 10, but did not get the nod from head coach Frank Yallop. Guvenisik originally signed with San Jose on Jan. 26, and Moreno followed suit a week later on Feb. 2. Guvenisik also made league history on the day, becoming the first Turkish player to appear in an MLS match. Moreno and Guvenisik are the second and third Quakes to have made their league debuts in the early going, following center back Victor Bernardez on March 10. Home Sellout Streak at Buck Shaw Continues Although the San Jose Earthquakes saw their club-record streak of seven straight home sellouts come to an end against the Houston Dynamo at AT&T Park in San Francisco on March 17, their run remains intact inside Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes had extended their stretch of consecutive sellouts at their regular home venue in Santa Clara to seven with another capacity crowd (10,525) on hand for MLS First Kick 2012 against the New England Revolution on March 10. The streak dates back to San Jose’s game against D.C. United on July 30, 2011, and also includes matches against Portland on Aug. 6, Colorado on Aug. 13, Chicago on Sept. 10, Sporting

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Toronto FC, March 24, 2012, 10 a.m. PT Kansas City on Oct. 1 and FC Dallas on Oct. 22. With an added stand on the South End, the attendance for the 2011 season finale with FC Dallas actually rose to 10,744 spectators. Hernandez Poised to Hit Century Mark Earthquakes defender Jason Hernandez has started all 99 matches that he has played in over his first four seasons in San Jose. His next league appearance and start will thus mark milestone No. 100 for the franchise in each category. Meanwhile, Hernandez is steadily climbing the all-time club charts, as he is one start away from tying Eddie Lewis (1996-99) for No. 8 on that list, and ninth in minutes played (8,757), right behind Lewis (8,867). AT&T Park Added to Quakes’ Bay Area Tour The Earthquakes’ 1-0 defeat to the Houston Dynamo on March 17 marked the club’s first-ever game at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Having called Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara home since the franchise returned to MLS for the 2008 season, and spent the 19962005 seasons at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, the Earthquakes have also now played matches at AT&T Park, Candlestick Park, Kezar Stadium, Oakland Coliseum, Stanford Stadium, and even Negoesco Stadium in the City, among other venues. The Quakes are 2-3-3 alltime in San Francisco over five exhibitions, two MLS contests and one US Open Cup match. San Jose’s only previous MLS regularseason game in San Francisco ended in a 3-0 loss to the Columbus Crew at Candlestick Park on Aug. 8, 2009. The Quakes’ San Francisco history follows: June 30, 1998: San Jose Earthquakes 3, SF Bay Seals 0 at Kezar Stadium* July 24, 2001: San Jose Earthquakes 1, LA Galaxy 1 (LA wins 10-9 on penalty kicks) at Negoesco Stadium** Sept. 18, 2002: San Jose Earthquakes 1, Club America 1 at Candlestick Park* Feb. 9, 2003: San Jose Earthquakes 4, Shanghai Shenhua FC 0 at Negoesco Stadium* Feb. 16, 2008: San Jose Earthquakes 0, Houston Dynamo 0 at Kezar Stadium* Aug. 8, 2009: Columbus Crew 3, San Jose Earthquakes 0 at Candlestick Park*** March 17, 2010: San Jose Earthquakes 0, Houston Dynamo 0 at Kezar Stadium* March 17, 2012: Houston Dynamo 1, San Jose Earthquakes 0 at AT&T Park*** * Exhibition; ** US Open Cup; *** MLS

And Then There Was One Ramiro Corrales is the lone remaining active player in MLS who participated in the league’s inaugural 1996 season. Defender Frankie Hejduk and goalkeeper Zack Thornton made a handful of appearances for the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA, respectively, in 2011, but neither player currently appears on an MLS roster. Corrales was the youngest to play in MLS in 1996 as a 19-year-old. Record-Breaking Winner for Wondo Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski wasted little time in opening his goal-scoring account for the 2012 campaign, the two-time MLS leader needing just under 15 minutes of the season opener against the New England Revolution on March 10 to find the back of the net. The right-footed strike from just outside the penalty area moved Wondolowski into sole possession of the all-time club record for gamewinning goals, which he previously shared with Quakes great Ronald Cerritos at 15 deciders apiece. Quakes Reverse Season-Opening Fortunes In defeating New England for MLS First Kick 2012 at Buck Shaw Stadium on March 10, the Earthquakes put an end to several unsavory streaks. Prior to the 1-0 decision against the Revolution, the Quakes had not won in their season opener since a 2-1 triumph at the Colorado Rapids on April 12, 2003, going 0-5-1 to kick off the previous six campaigns. The stretch included four straight losses since returning to MLS for the 2008 season, the last three of them coming at home inside Buck Shaw, 1-0 to the Revs in 2009, 3-0 to Real Salt Lake in 2010, and 1-0 again to RSL a year ago. The Quakes also had not won a home opener since a 2-1 victory over the Revs on April 6, 2002, at Spartan Stadium, going 0-4-3 since then. In fact, prior to Chris Wondolowski’s 15th-minute strike which ultimately proved to be the game-winner on March 10, the Quakes had not managed a goal over their previous four season openers or home openers since rejoining MLS. San Jose is now 6-8-1 all-time in season openers, and 5-7-3 in home openers. Looking for Turnaround in Narrow Decisions The San Jose Earthquakes’ win over the New England Revolution to open the season on March 10 marked their first 1-0 victory in league play since Sept. 15, 2010, at home against the Philadelphia Union. The Quakes’ only such scoreline in their favor a season ago came in overtime in a US Open Cup play-in contest at the Portland Timbers on May 3. San Jose is now already half-way to its 2011 total of one-goal victories in MLS matches, with each of those coming against New England as well, both by 2-1 counts. San Jose went 2-7 in one-goal games during its 2011 MLS campaign. Both games thus far in 2012 have been decided by a single tally. Welcome Back, Shea To mark his return to the franchise that selected him with its top pick (2nd Round, 15th Overall) of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, Earthquakes midfielder Shea Salinas assisted on the game-winning goal against the New England Revolution at Buck Shaw Stadium on March 10. Salinas ran onto a loose ball inside the New England half, took two dribbles and fed Chris Wondolowski forward for a one-onone with Revs goalkeeper Matt Reis, with the star striker making no mistake with his right foot from just outside the penalty area in the 15th minute. Salinas has played the full 90 minutes of both games thus far on the year. He spent the first two seasons of his professional career in San Jose before being chosen by the Philadelphia Union during the 2009 MLS Expansion Draft. He played with the Union in 2010 and with Vancouver Whitecaps FC in 2011, before the Quakes reacquired him via trade on Nov. 30.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Toronto FC, March 24, 2012, 10 a.m. PT Honduran Hook-Up San Jose’s new Honduran connection of center back Victor Bernardez and midfielder Marvin Chavez made both their club and home debuts in front of the Earthquakes faithful at Buck Shaw Stadium against the New England Revolution on March 10. Bernardez recovered in time from an injury suffered during the second game of the Portland Preseason Tournament, to make his first MLS appearance and play a significant role in the 1-0 shutout victory, while Chavez also started and remained in the match for 63 minutes before being replaced by Simon Dawkins. Bernardez and Chavez both hail from the same northern port city of La Ceiba, Honduras. Wondolowski Aiming for No. 1 on Quakes’ Career Goals List Chris Wondolowski continues to chase Ronald Cerritos for No. 1 on the franchise career goals list. The Danville native has scored seven goals over the last seven matches dating back to the end of the 2011 season, to increase his career haul in San Jose to 38. Cerritos is the club’s all-time leader with 61 goals from 1997-2001 and 2005. Opara Named to Official U.S. U-23 Roster For Olympic Qualifying Earthquakes defender Ike Opara was among 20 players named by head coach Caleb Porter on March 20 to the official U.S. U-23 roster for CONCACAF Olympic qualifying from March 22-April 2. Opara was originally in camp with the U-23s from Feb. 19-29. He wore the captain’s armband and played all 90 minutes as the Americans blanked Mexico on Feb. 29, 2-0, at FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Opara was unavailable to the Earthquakes against the Houston Dynamo on March 17, as the U-23 group reconvened in Nashville, Tenn., on March 13. With Tuesday’s announcement, Opara is now also set to miss the March 24 clash at Toronto FC. The U.S. faces Cuba on March 22 (6 p.m. PT), Canada on March 24 (4 p.m. PT) and El Salvador on March 26 (6 p.m. PT) during Group A play at LP Field in Nashville. All three games will be televised by Universal Sports Network and Telemundo. The top two squads from two groups advance to the semifinal round, with the two semifinal winners earning berths to the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England, in July. Wondolowski’s 2011 Campaign Again Among the Most Prolific in Club History For the second straight season in 2011, Chris Wondolowski posted one of the top five goal-scoring outputs in Earthquakes history. With his first-half penalty-kick goal against FC Dallas on Oct. 22 at Buck Shaw Stadium, Wondolowski put the finishing touches on San Jose’s second-best single-season scoring performance, falling two strikes short only of his own standard in 2010. Wondolowski is the only player in Earthquakes history to score 15 goals or more twice in his career. He and Ronald Cerritos (12 in 1997, 13 in 1998, 15 in 1999 and 11 in 2001) are the only players in club history to produce multiple seasons with double-digit goal totals. The five best single-season goal outputs in club history follow: 1. Chris Wondolowski – 18 goals in 2010 2. Chris Wondolowski – 16 goals in 2011 3. Ronald Cerritos – 15 goals in 1999 4. Ariel Graziani – 14 goals in 2002 5. Ronald Cerritos – 13 goals in 1998 5. Paul Bravo – 13 goals in 1996 Wondolowski Joins Elite Goal-Scoring Club Chris Wondolowski became the ninth player in MLS history to score 15 or more goals in back-to-back seasons with his strike against Seattle Sounders FC on Oct. 15, 2011, at CenturyLink Field. In addition, Wondolowski’s two-year output of 34 goals in 2010-11, ranks No. 8 all-time. The Danville native scored 18 in 2010 to win the Budweiser Golden Boot and 16 more in 2011 for a share of the league lead. Below is a list of players who have scored 15 or more goals in back-to-back seasons, followed by the top 10 two-year performances in league history: Chris Wondolowski – 2010 (18), 2011 (16) Dwayne De Rosario – 2010 (15), 2011 (16) Carlos Ruiz – 2002 (24), 2003 (15) Taylor Twellman – 2002 (23), 2003 (15) Diego Serna – 2000 (16), 2001 (15) Roy Lassiter – 1998 (18), 1999 (18) Stern John – 1998 (26), 1999 (18) Jaime Moreno – 1997 (16), 1998 (16) Raul Diaz Arce – 1996 (23), 1997 (15), 1998 (18) 1. San Jose Earthquakes vs. Toronto FC, March 24, 2012, 10 a.m. PT Earthquakes, Wondolowski Support Street Soccer USA Two-time MLS leading goal-scorer Chris Wondolowski and Street Soccer USA, a non-profit organization that seeks to end homelessness through sports, have partnered to make a difference in the lives of the homeless in the Bay Area through the “One Goal at a Time” campaign. For every goal Wondolowski scores during the 2012 season, the Quakes star has pledged a $100 donation to Street Soccer USA (SSUSA), and is asking fans to join in his mission. Additionally, the Earthquakes Community Fund will match Wondolowski’s donations. Wondolowski, who has been a national ambassador for SSUSA since August of 2011, opened his 2012 scoring account with a goal in San Jose’s season opener on March 10. Busch Among MLS Career Leaders in Several Categories With a current mark of .753, Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch is second on Major League Soccer’s all-time chart in career saves percentage. He trails only Brad Friedel, currently of Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League, who produced a mark of .756 over 38 games with the Columbus Crew in 1996-97. Busch picked up the 61st clean sheet of his 11-year MLS career on March 10 in a 1-0 season-opening win over the New England Revolution at Buck Shaw Stadium. He is eighth among the all-time leaders. Busch has posted 15 shutouts in his two-plus seasons as the starter in San Jose, to go along with his 21 during three seasons (2007-09) with the Chicago Fire, and 25 in five seasons (2002-06) with the Columbus Crew. Next on the list is former MLS and U.S. Men’s National Team standout Tony Meola with 62. Busch is also No. 8 all-time in saves in MLS history with 804 over his career. Dawkins Back for a Second Season in MLS On Feb. 14, the Earthquakes and English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur reached a second season-long loan agreement to bring midfielder Simon Dawkins back to San Jose. Dawkins completed his first season in MLS with six goals, second-best on the team behind Chris Wondolowski’s 16, and two assists over 26 games, 19 of them starts. The then-23-year-old native of Edgware, England, was named the 21st-best player in MLS under the age of 24 according to MLSsoccer.com’s annual 24 Under 24 list unveiled in September of 2011. Dawkins originally joined the club on loan from Spurs on March 16, 2011. Hat Trick Heroes San Jose’s striking tandem of Chris Wondolowski and Steven Lenhart each have the distinction of having produced a hat trick in a Quakes uniform. Of just five three-goal hat tricks in franchise history, the duo has accounted for three. Wondolowski has achieved the feat twice, at Toronto FC on Sept. 25, 2010, and at home against Chivas USA on Oct. 20, 2010, the latter in just 50 minutes on the pitch. Lenhart collected his hat trick in a resounding 4-2 victory at D.C. United on June 11, 2011. Busch the Shot-Stopper Third-year Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch led the league in saves in 2011 with 113 in 33 matches, edging out New England Revolution net-minder Matt Reis, who finished with 111 saves in 27 games played. Making the First One Count The Earthquakes are 95-9-24 in their last 128 matches when scoring first, dating back to July 8, 2000. They finished 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, an unbeaten 12-0-2 in 2010 and 7-4-5 last season. With a 1-0 triumph over the New England Revolution for MLS First Kick on March 10, they are off to a 1-0-0 start to the 2012 campaign. Prior to 2010, San Jose also went undefeated in 2001 (13-0-2), 2003 (11-0-1) and 2005 (14-0-5) when scoring first. The Earthquakes were 12-2-0 in 2002 when finding the back of the net first, only giving up leads two times in losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4, and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. In 2004, the Quakes went 8-1-1 when scoring first, the best mark in MLS. The Quakes surrendered a 1-0 advantage and dropped a 2-1 decision at the LA Galaxy on July 4, 2004, losing for just the first time since July 27, 2002, when striking first. The Quakes are also impressive in the playoffs when scoring first, posting an 8-0-1 record all-time. Scoring First Under Yallop During Frank Yallop’s tenure with San Jose, the Earthquakes are one of the best teams in the league when scoring the first goal. The team went 36-2-3 from 2001-03 when producing the first goal of the contest. The Quakes only gave up leads two times in 2002, losing 21 at the LA Galaxy on July 4 and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. Yallop’s team was 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, 12-0-2 in 2010, 7-4-5 in 2011, and 1-0-0 early in 2012. The Quakes are 70-8-18 (.823) in seven-plus seasons under Yallop when striking first. Halftime Success The Earthquakes remain amongst the best in league history in holding onto a halftime lead. Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Earthquakes are 70-3-15 in games when leading at the half, including impressive marks of 7-0-2 in 2010, 4-0-3 in 2009, 7-0-3 in 2005, 70-1 in 2004 and 8-0-1 in 2003. They are off to a 1-0-0 start in 2012. Despite holding a 1-0 halftime lead on May 10, 2008, vs. Columbus, the Quakes were edged by the final score of 3-2. That game marked the team’s first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime advantage. Assist Anecdotes Steven Beitashour, who led the Earthquakes with seven assists in 2011, tying for 11th in MLS, was not credited with his first career assist until June 4, 2011, marking the 12th game of the season … The first time that Beitashour was even on the bench for the Quakes in 2011 was the eighth game on May 11, making his season debut in a starting role … All seven of Beitashour’s assists came in a furious stretch of 22 contests to close the season for the young right back, with the first three of them coming on Steven Lenhart goals … A total of 15 different Quakes players were credited with assists on Wondolowski’s 16 strikes in 2011, with Rafael Baca, Ramiro Corrales, Simon Dawkins and former players Ryan Johnson and Jacob Peterson registering two apiece … Two of the three assists provided by Baca during his rookie season out of Loyola Marymount came on Wondolowski goals, vs. Chicago on Sept. 10 and in Seattle on Oct. 15.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Toronto FC, March 24, 2012, 10 a.m. PT Wondolowski is Mr. October Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski is earning the reputation of Mr. October for his fall goal-scoring sprees. He is tied for No. 1 alltime in MLS history for career regular-season goals scored in October, with 11. He shares that spot with Edson Buddle, back with the LA Galaxy for the 2012 campaign after a season in Europe, and D.C. United’s Dwayne De Rosario, a former teammate. Wondolowski’s firsthalf penalty-kick goal during a 4-2 win over FC Dallas last Oct. 22 in the 2011 season finale at Buck Shaw Stadium enabled him to pass Christian Gomez on the list and catch Buddle and De Rosario at the top. Wondolowski’s entire October haul has come in nine appearances over the last two seasons, more than double the next player on the list (DeRosario with five) over that same time period. 2012 Newcomers General Manager of Soccer Operations John Doyle and head coach Frank Yallop brought in a number of new acquisitions through several transactions during a busy offseason to bolster the Earthquakes lineup and add bench depth. They first traded for Shea Salinas, who was selected by the Quakes in the second round of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft and spent two seasons in San Jose prior to being picked up by the Philadelphia Union in the 2009 MLS Expansion Draft. In December, the Quakes negotiated trades for a midfield tandem with MLS Cup Playoffs experience in Jean-Marc Alexandre and Marvin Chavez, formerly of Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas, respectively. At the end of the month, San Jose signed Chavez’s Honduran compatriot, veteran center back Victor Bernardez. The team then inked Turkish forward Sercan Guvenisik in January and Colombian playmaker Tressor Moreno in February. In early March, the club signed a pair of trialists and second-year professionals in goalkeeper Evan Newton and defender Josh Suggs. 2012 Draft Class The San Jose Earthquakes’ 2012 draft class is headlined by winger Sam Garza, the No. 6 overall selection in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. Garza is a Generation adidas player who spent his sophomore and junior seasons of eligibility at UC Santa Barbara after earning conference newcomer of the year honors as a true freshman at Denver in 2008, and missing 2009 through injury. The Quakes also signed midfielder Jacob Hustedt, a second-round pick (No. 25 overall) in the SuperDraft out of Washington, and forward Cesar Diaz Pizarro, their top selection in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft (2nd round, No. 25) from UC Riverside. Quakes Set Career Milestones for Minutes Played A number of current Earthquakes set new all-time career highs for minutes played in a single season in 2011. The list includes: Steven Beitashour – 1,655; Previous record: 640 in 2010 Jon Busch – 2,970; Previous high: 2,700 in 2008 and 2009 with Chicago Fire Jason Hernandez – 2,491; Previous high: 2,451 in 2008 Justin Morrow – 810; Previous high: 59 in 2010 Brad Ring – 1,600; Previous high: 435 in 2010 Khari Stephenson – 2,256; Previous high: 776 in 2010 Chris Wondolowski – 2,672; Previous high: 2,308 in 2010 Ramiro Corrales’ 2,552 minutes were the single-season high of his San Jose career, but fell short of the 2,659 minutes he played in New York/New Jersey in 1999. Likewise, Sam Cronin played 1,903 minutes, a high for his Earthquakes career, but short of his 2,363 minutes as a rookie in 2009 for Toronto FC. Additionally, newcomers Jean-Marc Alexandre (703; Previous high: 494 in 2010), Marvin Chavez (2,521; Previous high: 818 in 2010) and Shea Salinas (1,695; Previous high: 1,306 in 2009 with San Jose Earthquakes) recorded career highs in minutes in 2011 for their former clubs, Real Salt Lake, FC Dallas and Vancouver Whitecaps FC, respectively. Quakes Get Go-Ahead from San Jose Planning Commission on New Stadium The San Jose Planning Commission voted 6-0 to uphold the Earthquakes’ Planned Development Permit on Feb. 22, paving the way for the club to break ground on its new stadium at 1125 Coleman Avenue. The Earthquakes’ PD Permit was initially consented for approval by city planners on Dec. 14, but was appealed by a Newhall Neighborhood Association member on Jan. 1. Fans clad in Earthquakes colors filled the council chambers to capacity. Owner Lew Wolff, Club President Dave Kaval and MLS President Mark Abbott spoke on behalf of the Quakes, among numerous community members and stakeholders, for over two hours before the commission closed discussion and took action on the appeal. The club has already sold 10 of 12 available field-level luxury suites for its new stadium, generating over $3.5 million in revenue for the project. For more information about the remaining suites, visit www.sjearthquakes.com/newstadium, email suites@sjearthquakes.com or call 408-556-7700. Quakes Feature Comprehensive Broadcast Partnerships in 2012 For the first time in club history, the San Jose Earthquakes have all of their games on television, English radio and Spanish radio during the 2012 season. The Quakes have partnerships this year with Comcast SportsNet (CSN), 1590 KLIV and KZSF 1370 AM. Marking the most comprehensive regional television schedule in team history, CSN is televising 29 Earthquakes games in 2012 in High Definition, with 18 on CSN California, eight on CSN Bay Area and three more on CSN Plus. The remaining five contests will have national television audiences, with four on NBC Sports Network and the June 30 California Clasico against the LA Galaxy at Stanford Stadium on ESPN2. Two of the CSNCA tilts will also air nationally on Spanish-language Galavision. The club’s local broadcast team consists of Jim Kozimor (play-by-play), Kelly Gray (color analyst) and Dan Dibley (sideline reporter). La Kaliente will cover all 34 Quakes games in Spanish for the second straight season. On the English side, KLIV returns as the broadcast partner for the first time since 2005, having carried Quakes matches in 2004 and 2005. Anthony Passarelli serves as the primary play-by-play commentator on KLIV, while Carlos Cesar Rivera is back for his fifth consecutive season as the Spanish voice of the Quakes, and his eighth overall.
